Obi1kenobi: Beg Igbos to leave? And yet, there is no tribe more nomadic than Igbos in Nigeria, scattering everywhere and refusing to settle on and develop Igbo land. That is why the entirety of the Igbo elite (intellectuals and academics, businessmen and top corporate executives, politicians etc) were completely silent in the face of the Ipob nonsense. There is no tribe in Nigeria - at least in the South - that are bigger "unity beggars" than Igbos. I know it flatters your ego to believe the rest of Nigeria can't do without Igbos, but the reality is Igbos need Nigeria to thrive. Better stop deceiving yourself. It's you and your ilks that can't see beyond Nigeria that are unity beggars. Stable Igbos would always stand for Igbo independence. Igbos thrived before Nigeria was established, we have Igbos thriving in far places like Poland currently , only myopic minority Igbos whose lives revolve around SW and North that cannot thrive outside Nigeria. But we ain't going to miss them. There is always option for naturalization for them. |

Obi1kenobi: These IPOB boys are comedians sha. The keep asking why people are "pained" as if any so-called "boycott" affects anything in anyway.
One, voter apathy has always been common in the South East.
Two, this apathy is magnified several times in LGA and Ward elections. Even a state like Lagos where some LGA's have a population close to or over a million often record just a few thousand votes in LGA and Ward elections. You can check the results of the last Local government elections in Lagos. In most local governments here in Lagos, it was basically agberos and those they could mobilize who voted in the Ward and LGA elections. This happens in most states too. I don't know one single person who would waste his time voting in an LGA election.
Three, whether you voted or not, you're going to have Councillors, Chairmen, State Representatives, Governors, Federal Reps, Senators, a President etc. No one gives the slightest fucckks about election boycotters. You're not important in anyway, especially to those who win and share the loot.
Keep thinking your petulant, childish, irrational show is affecting anyone. Well, it affected you and your ilks well enough to warrant this long epistle. |

At the end of the civil war there was a critical shortage of the new Nigerian currency, which retarded efforts to replace the currency in circulation in the east. The Central Bank began recalling the Biafran currency and the old Nigerian currency in the war-torn region but, because of the shortage of new Nigerian notes, only receipts were issued to those who surrendered the notes; although during this period of recall it was unclear what rate of exchange would be made for the Biafran notes. Rumours as to what value the Central Bank of Nigeria would place on the Biafran notes became widespread, with many believing one rumour that twenty Biafran pounds would be given the value of one Nigerian pound. Many impatient people surrendered their Biafran notes to speculators who were purchasing them at fifty Biafran pounds to one Nigerian pound. Ultimately the speculator! s got ‘burnt’, as the Central bank decided that there would be no exchange of Biafran currency for Nigerian currency, deciding instead to pay a flat rate of twenty Nigerian pounds to each depositor of Biafran or old Nigerian currency with the Central Bank.

SIRTee15: Stop twisting facts... What u quoted was currency exchange in liberated regions during the war-1968.... What I quoted was currency exchange in defunct biafra after the war.... And it clearly explained the 20 pounds genesis.... Commercial banks existed during the war n they were fully operational.... Or how else did biafra central bank circulated the biafran pound among the people.... It's obvious u guys don't really know much about events during the civil war itself, other than the lies u were told.... In case u dont know, post office was very much operational during the war... Judges sit n adjudicate over civil matters in court during the period.....
I understand it's difficult to accept that what u've been told by ur people was a farce.... But u know what.... The earlier u accept that people's narrative of events are more sentimental than factual... The less u believe bland statement without facts.... Commercial banks existed in Biafra during the war you say. Provide poof of that, you failed to do. Even Biafran Bank had to relocated many times during the war. The article you posted said nothing about 20 pounds policy. It talked about the exchange of Biafran currency and old Nigerian currency cash for New Nigerian note at fixed price. The above, though a topic for another day, was never the bone of contention of the topic, and so, is totally irrelevant to the discussion. The bone of contention was that Nigerian government gave 20pounds to every Igbo account holder in Nigerian banks after the war. Your article neither accepted nor debunked that claim, but was rather making an entirely different claim that isn't the meat of this thread. You are the one who is unscrupulously trying to link the two together. |

The £20 was for cash NOTHING To do with bank accounts. Of course some people tried to round trip and do other scams but there were several measures to checkmate this and of course once the budget was done that was it. Whether you had £20 or £20million Biafran you got £20 pound Nigerian.
It was a system open to abuse and fraud by Igbo leaders who then blamed peoples woes on NIGERIA AND AWO And what proof do you have of your own rambling, other that articles written by Nigerians? If I were u, I would demand a refund from my economics teacher... Provided u had one.... Look, don't be evasive to score brownie points. The twenty pounds policy is that you get 20 pounds for whatever money you had in Nigerian banks as an Igbo man, before the war. The piece of info you posted, wrote of cash exchange between old Nigerian pounds, new Nigerian notes and the Biafran pounds. It had nothing to do with money in the banks. You take your old Nigerian and Biafran notes to Nigerian banks, and you get offered 30 pounds as individual and 500 pounds Max, as corporate body. It had nothing to do with money in bank accounts, as Bank of Biafra was not a commercial bank. You had already claimed Biafra had commercial banks fully operational during the war, I had challenged you on that, and you went blank only to ressurect another propaganda. Respect your old age. |

Although the Central Bank of Nigeria had declared that the old Nigerian currency would no longer be exchanged after 22 January 1968, the trade in old Nigerian bank notes continued well into 1968. It appears that the authorities in Lagos would not release the new Nigerian bank notes in those areas of the Eastern Region which had been liberated from the Biafran ‘rebels’, for fear that a bank full off the new notes may be captured in a counter-offensive. Consequently there were three currencies circulating in Nigeria – new Nigerian notes in the West and North, Biafran notes in the areas controlled by the ‘rebels’ and old Nigerian notes in those areas of the East which had been liberated by the Nigerians. Because the old Nigerian notes continued to be accepted in certain areas, the value of the old Nigerian currency was not entirely worthle! ss. During the later half of 1968 the Central Bank of Nigeria announced they would exchange up to £30 per person and £500 for commercial enterprises in old Nigerian and Biafran currencies. However in the case of the individual no more than £10 of the £30 could be made up with Biafran notes and in the case of the commercial enterprises the limit was £100. Should any individual or enterprise wish to surrender a greater amount than the stated limits, then this would be done so long as the requests were registered with the exchange control authorities. While the continued acceptance of old Nigerian notes encouraged the continued activities by smugglers, by January 1969 the old Nigerian Pound had become almost unacceptable on the black market, worth only the merest fraction of its face value.
Like I said, this is about cash at hand, not money in bank. |

SIRTee15: There were commercial banks operating in biafra during the war.... Biafra issued out the biafran pound notes via these banks.... How else did ojukwu collected biafrans' nigerian pound and exchanged it for biafrans pounds at the start of the war.... BANK OF BIAFRA Bank of Biafra (Central Bank) 10 January 1968 / 08 January 1970 Headquarters Enugu, Biafra, later Aba, Umuahia, and Owerri, Biafra (Biafra transferred its capital several times to avoid capture by advancing Nigerian forces) An early institution created by the Biafran government was the Bank of Biafra, accomplished under ‘Decree No. 3 of 1967'. The bank carried out all central banking functions including the administration of foreign exchange and the management of the public debt of the Republic. The bank was administered by a governor and four directors; the first governor, per the signature on bank notes, was Sylvester U. Ugoh. A second decree, ‘Decree No.4 of 1967’, modified the Banking Act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the Republic of Biafra. The bank was first located in Enugu, but due to the ongoing war, the bank was relocated several times. Biafra attempted to finance the war through foreign exchange. After Nigeria announced their currency would no longer be legal tender (to make way for a new currency), this effort increased. After the announcement, tons of Nigerian bank notes were transported in an effort to acquire foreign exchange. The currency of Biafra had been the Nigerian pound, until the Bank of Biafra started printing out its own notes, the Biafran pound. The new currency went public on 28 January 1968, and the Nigerian pound was not accepted as an exchange unit. The first issue of the bank notes included only 5 shillings notes and 1 pound notes. The Bank of Nigeria exchanged only 30 pounds for an individual and 300 pounds for enterprises in the second half of 1968. In 1969 new notes were introduced: £10, £5, £1, 10/- and 5/-. It is estimated that a total of £115-140 million Biafran pounds were in circulation by the end of the conflict, with a population of about 14 million, approximately £10 per person. |

SIRTee15: The 20 pounds was for people who had biafra pounds in their bank accounts.... The strategy was to mop up the biafra currency in circulation... The policy was to give 20 pounds to anybody who has biafra pounds in his bank accounts irrespective of the amount.... It doesn't matter if it's 1 million or just 100 biafra pounds.... So long u can prove u have biafra pounds in your bank account, the whole amount will be exchanged for 20 nigerian pounds.... Even if its one biafra pound... Of course the igbos had hoped their biafran pounds will be exchanged for the nigerian currency at a fixed n reasonable rate.... Thus it's understandable if they were disappointed at the policy... But the policy has nothing to do with those holding the nigerian pounds.... Let's not forget some igbos stayed back in Lagos during biafra.... Thus it would have been stupid if FG started confiscating bank accounts with ibo names... Pls let's be enlightened.... Wrong. Bank of Biafra was not a commercial bank. It was more like a central bank. No one had bank accounts with them. So, in which bank did Biafrans have Biafran currencies on? The 20 pounds was strictly for those who had bank accounts with Nigerian banks. They were given 20pounds, irrespective of how much deposit they had. |

The Basque wanted and still wants independence from Spain. I'm surprised while Catalonians had not found it fit to team up with the Basques and together harmonize a double pronged assault on the fabric of Madrid "unity by force " wickedness. The Basque were skinned alive and left by Madrid years ago for their violent campaign for independence from the wicked evil iron hold of Spain, the Catalonians watched them and did nothing.
How often are we too shortsighted to see the bigger picture?
If Catalonians worked hand in hand with Basque, and they both declared this independence together, the job will be harder for Madrid.
Be that as it is, my support is with Catalans, I just pray and hope the pro Spanish unity greedy and treacherous fifth columnists amongst the Catalan ranks don't wreck their independence boat and get it sinking very fast.
It is hard to conquer a united people, and easier to conquer a people with traitors in their midst.
The whole freedom seeking, self determination yearning people, from different parts of the world eyes are on Catalonia. They (Catalonia) represent the fight of good against evil, the fight of the oppressed against the oppressors, this their fight has a global impact, as many self determination seeking groups will be inspired and energized by their success , while many oppressors and "unity by force" enforcers will be emboldened in their wickedness, should Catalonia fail. |

I can't say there are no mud houses in Igboland, there could be some, but they are very hard to find, and most of them are abandoned, it's not uncommon to see a block house just nearby an abandoned mud house, they(mudhouses)are not common, and they are considered a thing of reproach. Only the downtrodden like widows and extremely poor live in mud houses in Igboland , and in Igboland, when one lives in mud house, he/she is considered homeless, because mostly they are actually homeless people, who circumstances forced into parking into hitherto abandoned mud houses. This is not the case In Yorubaland. It's almost like a norm there. Living in mudhouse is considered absolutely normal there, they would go extra mile to plaster and paint such mudhouses, including building them into upstairs and decorating them. It was in Yorubaland I saw a mudhouse upstairs lininnig an entire street for the first time in my life. Never knew people will make out time to build mudhouses into upstairs. |

boostdom: Considerable scrutiny would also reveal why Kanu went about it the way he did.
Karl Marx had a maxim that "when you are the oppressor/privileged, equality seems like persecution".
It is clear to anyone who has two brain cells to rub together that the beneficiaries of the blatant exploitation in Nigeria would rather die than allow an event that will unsettle their parasitism. United in their exploitation, they cut across the different ethnic groups feasting on the structural debility of Nigeria.
The foundation of legal authority that Nigeria calls it's constitution was not fully drawn by a consensus of inputs by representatives of the people, no, but by the agents of pathetic military exploiters who have poised to continue that imbalanced malfeasance. They have also distorted the balance of the country by awarding the North numerically superior states and population, which are largely unproductive in the grand scheme of things. Now, tell me how Kanu could have successfully pushed his agitation through the parliament? Tell me.
History lends credence to the fact that where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, then that society will always face upheavals. Good one. |
