Let's stop assuming that uni or Bsc has a better quality than poly or HND. Try this simple test and note down the result. Get an average uni graduate and an average poly graduate who read the same course; give them a small task or problem concerning their field to solve, u won't be surprised at the outcome anyway. Try it on more than 2 different disciplines and note down the outcomes. You will discover that 95% of the time the poly guys will have it.Try it and see. I have experimented on it before and the poly guys had it. Mind you i passed thru poly and uni, so i am talking based on my experience. Have you ever asked why Bsc grads don't like sitting for the same exams or aptitude test wit poly HND grads? |
So far nobody has been able to come out with any good reason why uni system is better than that of the poly. All most of u are saying are based on assumptions and what u feel should be. Give a uni accounting grad and a poly accountancy grad questions in the field of accounting and see who would do better. We all know that the poly grads are smarter than the uni grads in accounting, or do we need to carry out a statistical test? Let's stop assuming and give credit to the man that does the job well and not to the man that is assumed should be able to do it. I am talking from experience becos i have studied in both institutions before. |
The discrimination kills the morale of poly graduates and as such needs to be addressed. Nigerian HND and Bsc are meant to be equivalent, nobody is saying they are the same. HND cannot be Bsc, and Bsc cannot bn HND either. On the UK NFQ scale they have the same weight, so i wonder why the preference for the Bsc when they can hardly come out with any meaningful R and D fop the HND technologists to implement. The discrimination against HND graduates is highly responsible in the negative growth recorded in the industrial sector and the public service in nigeria. |
The polytechnics were initially established to train middle level skilled manpower which was the then OND, in science & technology, engineering, commerce, & applied arts. Much later the need to have high level skilled man power came up, and the poly were given the same task, which is the HND. I wonder why some people think poly are meant to train only people in sci & tech at the OND level. The HND and Bsc are not the same based on the difference in the structure of their curricula. They are only equivalent qualifications in nigeria. We will soon call on all poly students, graduates, parents & guardians, lecturers, NAPS, etc to come out in mass and protest against this discrimination in the civil service. |
Most developed countries like china and japan did not rely on bsc or uni to get to where they are now, rather they relied on technical skills from artisans to craftsmen, to technicians and technologists, and not bsc. Uni people are suppose to be focused on research and development; but do they really think far and wide as they claim? Most nigerian engineers are nothin but technicians who do the job of technicians and earn the salary of an engineer. Nigeria should follow the foot steps of countries like japan and china where the emphasis is on technical skills and not paper qualification or else we will continue being 100% dependent on them for everything. |
There has never been any significant difference in the entry qualification. For Engineering, poly requires credits in maths, physics, chemistry, T/D and a pass in english. Uni requires same though insist on credit in english. But some uni also accept pass in english. Also the pre degree program in the uni is like the pre nd prog in poly. Applicants with one or two deficiencies are admitted. I know of many uni grads that passed thru pre degree and finally graduated with a Bsc without credit in o'level english or mathematics or both. Such situations are found in both the uni and poly and not poly alone. Entry qualification makes no difference. Let's hear a better excuse pls. |
For those asking if Profs and non-profs can have the same output on students. No, there is a difference btw those that were taught by profs and those that were taught by probably masters degree holders. The difference is always obvious. Those who passed thru the hands of profs speak more grammer wit little knowledge about how to get the job done. Those who passed thru masters degree holders get the job done very well and speak little grammer. |
If the FG can set up a committee headed by Anyim Pius Anyim, to look into the issue of discriminant salary structures in some govt ministries and parastatals, why can't they do same to address the discrimination against polytechnic HND graduates in the civil service? This is a very sensitive issue, more sensitive than the one Anyim is presently looking at. Pls share your opinion with us on this. |

cessienboy:Point of correction. There is a stats association in nigeria but it is not functional. That is why the stat-gen of the federation is an economist and not a statistician. Can an economist be appointed as acct-gen of the federation? Never, ICAN members will kick against it. |
it's a complex LP problem. I'm too busy with work now, but i will try and look for time to solve it. Take kia. |
Timsezeh:If i may ask, what level are you now? This LP problem requires you to use the big M method or Revised simplex method to solve it. I hope you know those methods? |
I'm ready to solve it, but how much will you pay? |
what the hell does the head of service mean? if there is any curriculum that needs to be overhauled in nigeria it is that of the university. It is so obsolete, and that accounts for why Nigerian university graduates can not make anything work in the country. The nigerian polytechnic curriculum is better, richer and wider than that of the university in Nigeria. From my experience, i attended both schools and i discovered that there are some courses i offered in the polytechnic that i did not do in the university. My friend too who had a BTech in Estate Mgt could not lecture a course she was given to during her NYSC in kaduna polytechnic because they were not taught that course in the university. Has the HOS been to a polytechnic before to come and tell us that poly curriculum is inferior to that of the university? |
Dis Guy:write to who? don't mind them; some of them don't even like employing HND holders in their companies. The likes of Fola Adeola of GT bank, who has HND but discriminates against other HND holders. |
Jarus:Don't mind them; the same Fola Adeola does not even want to employ HND holders. HND holders are employed as contract staff in GT bank. |
Dis Guy:that has not change anything. HND holders are still being discriminated in the private and public sectors. |
AjanleKoko:yes they are. We only have a Director-General for Nationa Bureau of Statistics (NBS) who they are now wrongly referring to as Statistician-General. |
AjanleKoko:you are not getting the point. We have a Statistical bureau in Nigeria, but we do not have the office of Statistician-General who is suppose to be the head of all Statistics for the country. Having a DG in NBS is different from the office of Statistician-General. Just like accounting, Statistics is a profession and they have professional exams that qualifies them to become chartered just like accounting, it is not a title, you write exams. They have it in the UK and US and some other african countries but we don't have it in Nigeria. That is why it is even difficult to have accurate data in Nigeria. |
udezue:Don't be naive. The middle belters were the ones that killed the igbos more before and during the civil war. In States like Plateau, niger, Kogi, Benue, etc igbos were killed like chicken and yet you want to still have something to do with them?? Becareful o. What is the difference between fowl and guinea fowl? all of them na fowl oh, hope you know that?? |
why should Nigeria rely on UN data? Can't we empower our various statistical units in the country and get these data acurattely and timely? Can't we set up statistical and bio-statistical units in hospitals (both private and government) to collect and keep data for states and at the end present the data to the government? this can also help us gather some health and demographic data for the country. More still needs to be done in the area of statistics in Nigeria, else things will always be done wrongly. |
Please i need opinions from you guys, because it hurts me to know that statistics is not given a priority in Nigeria as it is in other countries. how do the people who take decisions for us do it? which data do they use in planning? i wonder, buti need to ask other nigerians. |
I was wondering, why is it that we don't have Chartered status for statisticians in Nigeria like they do in other countries like Britain? We also don't have the office of the Statistician-General, why? Do we take Statistics serious in Nigeria at all? Even smaller african countries do, but Nigeria does not care. do you have a reason for that? |
i wonder why they still discriminate even after they said government themselves have settled it. Even government ministries and parastatals discriminate against HND holders during employment. They give HND holders level 07 while Degree holders ae given level 08. it hurts. |
ojimbo IV:dog meat is meat just like goat meat; a lot of nigerians eat it. |
