EducationRe: Occupy UNILAG: Students Protest MAU Renaming by ishmael(m): 12:17pm On May 29, 2012
What is bad about that? I thought yoruba's have been asking for the immortalization of MKO's name? Govt have done it now and they are complaining again. Or is it because he is not from lagos state? What about uni of ife that was changed to OAU? Did the people of osun or ile-ife complain? I'm really surprised. The same yoruba's and lagosians that claimed to love MKO now rejecting his name. You people have really betrayed MKO's family. MAULAG may sound funny but people will soon get used to it.

EducationRe: Jonathan: 60% Of Varsity Dons Without Ph.D by ishmael(m): 11:01am On May 28, 2012
My candid advice to GEJ is to make paper qualification especially university degree less relevant and skills or hands-on practical experience more relevant in the job market, else even with one prof to one student we will still be churning out low quality graduates who ordinarily would've been technicians or craftsmen. But because nobody cares about your skills, just get a degree and u're qualified for the job. Most foreigners we call expatraites in nigeria today are not degree holders, they are graduates of technical institutes and polytechnics but yet we highly patronize and respect them. We can also make expatriates from our nigerian technical institutes and polytechnics if only they are given the opportunity and recognition. I know of a man who was a technical school graduate in the late 80's, but because of the fear of discrimination he forced himself to get a university degree in History, though he still works as a plumber. If you interact with him you may not see any element of a degree holder in him, rather you will see the technician in him because in the first place he is not meant to be a uni graduate. GEJ, pls de-emphasize on paper qualification and you will have less people in the universities and hence churn out more quality uni graduates.
BusinessRe: WHOELSE Can Solve This Simple Math? by ishmael(m): 10:08am On May 28, 2012
There is no missing 1k bros. You don't balance your acct that way. This is how to balance it :- He borrowed 100k in total. The shirt costs 97k, which means 100k - 97k = 3k. He gave 1k each to his dad and mom, which is 3k - 2k = 1k, which is the 1k left with him. The acct is balanced this way. There is no missing 1k.

@Steve888: How do you want us to work? I need to know what part of the country you reside? Also what course and degree are you pursuing? Let me know these first. Basically, we will need to design a questionnaire to collect the needed data for the project. Regards.

PoliticsRe: The President Northerners Want - Sule Lamido by ishmael(m): 11:00am On May 26, 2012
Yes, we agree, let power return back to the north. It is a very wise suggestion. We will give our support only to a northerner who knows the meaning of peace and not pieces. We will prefer a northern christian to be presented or else let them forget it. We are tired of jihadists ruling us.

You can also suggest they make physics compulsory 4 arts students to also sharpen their thinking and reasoning abilities.
EducationRe: Emphasis On Mathematics & English Causes Mass Failure - Educationist by ishmael(m):
thehomer: I didn't say there was no difference, I said there was no need at the secondary school level for statistics to be a separate course from mathematics when the concepts can be taught in mathematics. For some reason, you still don't seem to see that the secondary school level is more for general knowledge than for specialized knowledge. Especially in these modern times when there is a lot more to learn and many more courses in the school day.
It was offered as a subject in the past. It's only a suggestion for it to be re-introduced back so that those that want to go in for some arts and social science courses can go in with statistics in lieu of general maths. I see no good reason why arts students should do the same rigorous maths as their science counterparts. I rest my case bro.
EducationRe: Emphasis On Mathematics & English Causes Mass Failure - Educationist by ishmael(m): 2:40pm On May 20, 2012
thehomer: You must be missing some doses of your medication.
What part of having a basic knowledge didn't you understand? Anyway, you can take a look at this book. You can read it online for free or download it to help you understand that everyone to some extent needs some basic knowledge of these principles.
Then take a look at this article. It is more on geography but as we know, lawyers and historians can be involved in understanding geography.
Note that statistics hasn't been remove, it is still in the Mathematics curriculum.
No need debating with u since u cannot see any difference between statistics and mathematics. I thought u knew. And also everything is wrong with embedding statistics inside mathematics. Statistics is a distinct field from mathematics, and it is basic stats that most arts & social science courses require and and not general mathematics. It should stand on its own like it used to be in the past in WAEC just like mathematics.

crackhouse: mr man make i hear word. Designing skills and repairing skills is not the same my dear. It's like knowing the external without the knowledge of internal aspect. Don't compare HND with Bachelors degree pls.
Don't make urself look ignorant here. Are HND accontancy graduates not better than Bsc accounting graduates in nigeria? Internally and externally they are better than the Bsc graduates; and it has been proven to be statistically significant in favor of the HND graduates. So don't condemn them. And for ur info i have passed thru both schools and i am speaking from the researched truth and not assumption.
EducationRe: Emphasis On Mathematics & English Causes Mass Failure - Educationist by ishmael(m): 10:42pm On May 19, 2012
thehomer: What is wrong with including Statistics within Mathematics?
Everyone needs some knowledge of Geometry and Trigonometry due to how it influences one's spatial reasoning. The SSCE is supposed to be a sort of all purpose core knowledge around which one develops as they see fit. Even if one doesn't use it regularly, at least the person who learnt it previously can easily and quickly pick it up again if needed.
You're too fake. You don't even know what trig or geometry is. Ok tell us one area where the law or history student applies trig or geometry in law or in history; i'm waiting. A prospective law or history student at best requires knowledge of basic statistics which they will eventually apply in the area of research data collection and data analysis, and not all those irrelevant topics like geometry, trig and other irrelavant topics that he or she will never make reference to.

kaysy: United Nation said a development oriented country should be able to allocate 27% of its budget to education, GEJ is still battling with 4% and he expecting good graduates... well lets see how possible that can be
Even with his PhD I doubt if he knows what it takes to produce quality graduates. He thinks it's by using old professors who are walking with the aid of walking sticks.
CareerRe: Any Hope With 3.49 CGPA? by ishmael(m):
@Mollytinrox: I disagree with u on ur previous post. The labour market in nigeria looks at the certificate and grade more than skills from what we are witnessing; and that's why the OP is worried. Also can u explain why polytechnic HND graduates with skills are not considered in most cases, even when it is obvious that they posses the skills employers want?

kutchs: Why Nigerians are never pleased is wot surprises me. When the last ASUU strike was on pple were here blasting GEJ for not doing anything to end the strike, blasting him for not granting the demands of ASUU and now he has done so the same pple are out in droves condemning his action. What the hell is wrong with us. I personally never supported the 70 yr shit (am a lecturer myself) but if it was wot was needed for peace and stability to return to our schools why blame GEJ for toeing the line of peace. Everyone wants an uninterrupted academic calender but no one is ready to condemn unreasonable and selfish demands made by ASUU, COEASU etc.
You are right. I also condemned it when David Mark & co passed that bill to please a certain selfish and greedy few. It was only Chris Ngige that kicked against it by telling them the medical implications, but they being ignorant or trying to please those selfish few had the highest votes. Majority may not be right sometimes and in this case they were very wrong. I have said it times without number that the law of diminishing returns is true on the activeness, retaining capabilities and innovative capabilities of the human brain. Things are begining to change o. Fashola just set a new record with Lagos state Doctors. ASUU and what ever should be careful because they may not be lucky the next time they ask for more like Oliver Twist.

The funny thing is that GEJ knew these profs were grooming and producing low quality graduates and he still went ahead to sign the bill for them to still be grooming low quality graduates till they get to 70 years. Any way they are his colleagues, and "birds of same feather flock together"
CareerRe: Any Hope With 3.49 CGPA? by ishmael(m): 9:13am On May 19, 2012
Do not bother urself much, just keep struggling. U could also think of running ur own biz or consultancy, and that will distinguish u from other graduates. Mind u, ur case is better than that of people with 3rd class or pass degree and people with HND (distinction or upper) who may never get the opportunity of attending some interviews or tests.

thehomer: How about for the rest of one's life? How can one have a scientifically literate society that would be able to meet the challenges of the 21st century if a significant population of her people are illiterate in basic mathematics? How would they have the basic skills to find out what sorts of policies to support or vote for? How would they be able to research into the best candidates for their future and that of their children?
Read my post again. That is why i said they need knowledge of basic statistics. The general maths as a whole is filled with a lot of irrelevant topics for people going in for certain courses. Statistics used to be a subject in WAEC before it was merged with or incoporated into gen mathematics and Additional maths. Imagine, what does someone who wants to read law or history have to do with Geometry and Trigonometry?
EducationRe: Produce Good Graduates: Jonathan Tell Professors by ishmael(m): 3:01am On May 19, 2012
Most of them have out- lived there usefulness. We need younger and vibrant profs to bring back the glory in our our educational system and graduates and not keeping the old ones to teach what they know how to do best in their on ways when obviously their counterparts in the US and other pseudo- stable countries have replaced with newer and better theories and techniques.. Only few can do research now. Can't we have profs that are, say between 45 and 55 years? If things were ok in nigeria, no prof would want to die still working after attaining the age of 60 years.
EducationRe: Produce Good Graduates: Jonathan Tell Professors by ishmael(m): 9:25pm On May 18, 2012
These profs were able to produce quality graduates in the past because they were younger and very active then, unlike now that they are old. Now that profs would be teaching till they go into their graves, we should also expect to churn out the worst category of graduates in nigeria who will also be thinking the same way as the inactive profs at 65 - 70 years. I blame those who passed that bill, they lost focus on education the day they passed that bill. The graph of the law of diminishing returns should be looked at and studied properly by our senators relating age to output or performance; perhaps they know nothing about it.
EducationRe: Emphasis On Mathematics & English Causes Mass Failure - Educationist by ishmael(m): 9:02pm On May 18, 2012
English language should be emphasized more than mathematics. Many courses at the tertiary level actually don't need maths but requires english since the courses would be taught in english language. Maths should be compulsory for people going in for certain science and social science courses like maths, statistics, engineering, physics, accounting, economics, etc. Most courses require at best basic statistics and not general maths which they are forced to do. I strongly recommend that statistics as a subject be re-introduced by WAEC and adopted by NECO too. This will remove the fear and hatred for general maths.

Fhemmmy: So age is a problem now with teaching?
Yes, old age is the problem with teaching and research and not just age. Medical scientists have proven that at age 60 the cells in the human body begin to go down or weaken, and this also includes the brain cells. The law of diminishing returns can also explain this better. As they grow older they become less active upstairs. We need younger profs to do the teaching and research while the old ones should be retired and be only consulted if need be. And if u think the faculty or dept cannot do without them, what if they die? Won't the learning or research process continue? Also bear in mind that no body in this world is irreplaceable on any aspect of education. You can prove me wrong.
EducationRe: Produce Good Graduates: Jonathan Tell Professors by ishmael(m):
They can't churn out quality graduates again. How can we allow them to still teach at the age of 65+ when their brain cells are weak? Now we are asking them to still teach up to the age of 70 years. I hope GEJ knows the implications of this bill he just signed? The situation is sure going to worsen. We need young profs to put things right, and not the old ones of 70years that are in our universities.

The poly graduates should be allowed to compete favorably with uni graduates in fields where either poly or uni graduates can do the work, e.g. Accounting, Architecture, to mention a few.
