Well done. I 'm happy Nigeria is winning in an area. Three gbosa to Nigeria.
That's Naija's gift to the world

Lagosboy:
"wahala" is definately from arabic but got adapted to yoruba language like other words as well.

wahal in arabic connotes a difficult situation, problematic situation or worrisome situation.

Once i lay my hands on a dictionary i would paste it here.

Yoruba words always have a derivative syllable like arabic and one can tell the origin which in arabic is called "asl".

There are a number of other arabic words like that which is commonly used in yoruba language today just like french and greek words which got adapted to english.
I was also surprised when I first learnt that the word 'wahala' was not Yoruba
Culture › Re: Yar Adua Is A Fulani Man by Jarus(m): 9:00am On Mar 02, 2009
I'm always having problem distinguishing Hausa from Fulani. My initial thought was that Fulani are light-skinned and hausa dark-complexioned, but I've been corrected that there are dark-skinned Fulani as well. So I resort to asking my Hausa/Fulani friends on whether a person of interest is Hausa or Fulani. But now I think I can tell, with a high degree of certainty, on whether somebody is Hausa or Fulani. I have always known Yar'adua is Fulani.
I didn't know he is Fulani. I always thought he is hausa. Anyway, are they not the same? . Abacha= Fulani; Atiku= Hausa; Abdulsalaami= Fulani; Ibb= Bwari. Who are the hausa that have been ruling Nigeria?
I know Buhari is Fulani Is Atiku not Fulani too?

Who are the majority between Hausa and Fulani, anyone?

I heard Fulani are more educated.

Can Maisuya, Muza or any other Hausa/Fulani folk educate us?

It's been over 5 years now that I've known about Fawehinmi scholarship.

Fawehinmi demonstrates that achieving a welfarist nation should go beyond disturbing govt to give to citizens what they deserve, but blessed private individuals like him can also help within their means.

NYSC is waste of man power. I studied computer sc in school, and i'm teaching jss1 to 3 social studies all in the name of serving my nation. I'm i gaining anything?
I studied Economics but NYSC Sokoto posted me to a remote Village to teach PHE in a secondary school. As if that was not bad enough,I was later reposted to an even more remote village to teach in primary school.

But that, to me, is still not even reason to scrap the scheme.
Career › Re: "JUJU" Assistance To Get a Job (is It Possible?) by Jarus(m): 6:00pm On Mar 01, 2009
A good Christian or Muslim will NOT believe in juju.
It is one thing to recognize the existence of something, it is another thing to know its limit, how to tackle it if it happens, as well as preventive/protective measures. Islam makes us know that evil forces like juju etc exist, and it unveils the deception behind it. In fact, special Qur'anic chapters(Chapters 113-114) were revealed on the subject of this evil forces among mankind and jinns.

So a good Muslim will not deny the existence of juju and other evil forces, but what is forbidden is to use/consult it. And if it is cast on a Muslim, there are Islamic procedures to exorcise the afflicted. Also, a Muslim is not expected to fear juju, rather, fortify himself against such through prayers and worship.

Mind you, anything got by way of juju, whether seemingly good(like job) or obviously bad(like making another person run mad), is evil. The end does not justify the means here.

Politics › Re: Bauchi State Governor To Replace Charles Soludo As CBN Governor by Jarus(m): 4:46pm On Mar 01, 2009
I don't believe this story.
But if it's true, then that will be the most brazen political decision Yar'adua administration will take.
I have been following rumours in papers on Soludo's successors in the last few months, and mention has been made of Taminu, Falalu,Mansur Mukhtar and a few other leading bankers/Economists from the north, but giving Yuguda the job will be a monumental blunder.

Career › Re: "JUJU" Assistance To Get a Job (is It Possible?) by Jarus(m): 1:52pm On Feb 28, 2009
I personally believe juju is real, because I know how it works and what's behind it. Those who engage in it employ the service of an invisible creation called Jinn(the evil ones among them). And there is even limit to their power.
However, like any other thing sourced from evil, the effect is usually temporary. Whatever power gotten through such means will surely fail in no distant period. Those who employ juju usually enter into contract with these evil beings, and their conditions are usually obnoxious,(like losing their manhood, seeing dreadful dreams etc) such that after a short period of time, it backfires, and the 'beneficiary' will have the power deserting him.

Whoever gets jobs through juju should be ready to lose the job and whatever he had acquired through it-and that may even be the least he may suffer- in no distant period. Ditto for those that use juju to get contract, win election etc.

The only source of everlasting good is God.

Politics › Re: From hindsight, Awo Was More Visionary Than Zik by Jarus(m): 1:12pm On Feb 28, 2009
Afaukwu:
"Nigeria started as two units-Northern and Southern Protectorates. It was Lord Lugard who said, after the Colonial Office was advised, that the two should be coupled so that the North, which was at that time not economically strong, be carried economically by the South, instead of Colonial Office sending subvention all the way from London. That is how we got the amalgation of 1914.

When Chief Tony Enahoro moved a motion here in Lagos for independnce, the British got frightened, at the legislature. Ndi ebe anyi si na inwi de ofia, e bele ya odu. (Instead of losing the whole rabbit to the bush, it is better to cut its tail).

The British then said, ‘a rather than leave the rest of Nigeria, let one part go and let’s keep one part. So in April 1957, the British offered independence to Nigeria but on regional basis.

Not as one unit but they agreed with a section of the country what to do. The north said they were not ready. The west said they were ready. It was Zik and Ndigbo who said no. That was the first time in my life I first heard the word balkanisation. Zik said rather than balkanise Nigeria, let’s wait for the North. That was how independence was delayed from ‘57 to 1960.If the East at the time had opted for independence, what we would have got is the present states of the former Eastern Region from Bayelsa all the way to Cross River. Not only that, what was then Southern Cameroun, up to Bakassi would have become part of that Eastern Nigeria, with oil rich Bakassi right in the middle of a sovereign Eastern Nigeria controlled by the Igbo. Who could have made a greater sacrifice to keep Nigeria together?"

From hindsight, Awo appears to be smarter than Zik, and if Awo had his way, by now the south would have been rid of the North, and the SE and SW will grow independent of each other, at their different pace.
Please who was talking here?

I was somehow young and not conscious of national events in the first half of IBB regime, but I learnt he started well. I became conscious of national happenings in early 90s, second half of his reign, and that was arguably the worst period in Nigeria's political history.
I was grown up enough to assess the whole of OBJ regime.

I think I'll go with OBJ.
Education › Re: World Top 500 University Ranking - 2008 by Jarus(m): 12:44pm On Feb 27, 2009
No university in Nigeria may be on those list, but yet, Nigerians who studied their first degrees in Nigeria, march on into these universities and set records.
I like this point. Very true. I know a number of Nigerian graduates that have set records in Imperial.

It does not however validate that our ivory towers should be left to deteriorate more than it is right now, but it creates an anecdote that it is brains who make these glorious ivory towers flourish. Does Nigeria have these brains? YES! But sadly, Nigeria is losing them in their thousands everyday
True talk.

I can't withstand Ife unionism. I was too feeble-minded to dabble into it. But it was too interesting to ignore. 90% of Ife students used to be politically conscious. Only a very few (maybe pastors and alfas) show apathy. I followed campus politics very well, attended manifesto nights, didn't take part in alutas though. I was a campus journalist, so I was a frequent commentator on campus politics through my controversial column, POINTBLANK, on Economics Dept press outfit. I dared not move near Student Union politics but I was somehow active in departmental politics. I played the role of Godfather in departmental politics, but when I came out to contest for NESA GenSec, I lost, due to hi-tech intrigues(politics could be funny).

It was all fun sha!!!

Aint they gonna condemn this ignominious?

Talk of double standard.
Xavier,
I know you've got some sense, it only deserted you while making this remark.
Who is doing the double-standard here?
This topic is about the effectiveness of CAN's proposition in tackling the problem, and I have rightly voted that it won't.
