European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Ibrahimovic And C. Ronaldo, Who Is A Better Player? by Jarus(m): 5:41pm On Feb 25, 2009
I will definitely go with CR7, but not because of yesternight's match, but my judgment based on what they have done in the past and what I know they can do. Basing it on yesterday's match alone clould be misleading. What if Ibracadabra had had a better game yesternight? I personally don't judge with a match. Any player can have an off-day in a match.

I will always advise people to gor for Economics in the university, while starting ICAN(ATS) as early as year 1. Before you graduate you are likely to have gone very far in ICAN, if not qualified already, and plus a 2-1degree in Economics, you become a hot cake, at least for banks!

i hear its always better to start a career at kpmg, accenture, pwc and the likes of them, than to go start with oil companies and the much bigger organisations/non finance related companies,(that is for accountant, finance and admin people) considering a longterm goal of larger paycheck and higher position.Could anybody shed light on this please,

I was born during Shagari regime, actually became conscious of national happenings during IBB regime, so I may not be able to judge on others I did not witness, but let me compensate that with what I have heard and read, in which case I'll go like this:

1, Murtala
2, Buhari/Idi-agbon
3, Obasanjo

More seriously, the problem with Nigeria has no gender. The women are as bad as the men.
Islam › Re: Is Hijab A Sign Of Purity? by Jarus(m): 6:22pm On Feb 24, 2009
Good explanation from Lagosboy there, only that I'm not comfortable with the mention of economy. No matter how bad an economy is, there is no justification for unchastity.
However let me call the poster's attention to the fact that in the north, even the non-Muslims wear hijab. I'm not concluding that the women he saw are non-Muslims though.
Islam › Re: Websites Propagating False About Islam by Jarus(m): 2:35pm On Feb 24, 2009
When a Christian, jew or whoever starts a website to campaign against Islam, and expressly so, we do not have any issue with that, that is his own cup of tea. The maximum we can do is open our own website and counter him. But when some non-Muslims open websites, pretending and deceiving unsuspecting Muslims that the site is Islamic, and spreading false, misleading 'Islamic' information, definitely there is need to sensitize Muslims of the existence of such sites.
Islam › The Prophet's Last Sermon by Jarus(op): 8:31am On Feb 24, 2009
The final admonition of the Prophet is a very touching one. It is an admonition all Muslims must live by. It should be our anthem. It's very moving:

The Final Sermon:
After praising, and thanking God, the Prophet, may God send His praises upon him said:

“O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore, listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and take these words to those who could not be present here today.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. God has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. God has Judged that there shall be no interest, and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn Abd’al Muttalib shall henceforth be waived,

Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under a trust from God and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship God, perform your five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan, and offer Zakat. Perform Hajj if you have the means.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; white has no superiority over black, nor does a black have any superiority over white; [none have superiority over another] except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.

Remember, one day you will appear before God and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, no prophet or apostle will come after me, and no new faith will be born. Reason well, therefore, O people, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Quran and my example, the Sunnah, and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and it may be that the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O God, that I have conveyed your message to your people.”

Thus the beloved Prophet completed his Final Sermon, and upon it, near the summit of Arafat, the revelation came down:

“…This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My Grace upon you, and have chosen Islam for you as your religion…” (Quran 5:3)

Let's examine ourselves: To what extent are we following this inimitable message?

I'm set to shut down now, off home.
Quite busy day. We had Asset Disposal Committee meeting this afternoon and did the analysis of the bids we received in respect of some cars we put for disposal. I have been given the go-ahead to dispose another set of cars and 10 Gensets, but I need to do one or two things before arriving at reserved prices.I have been calling our Apapa and PH Engineers/Accountants since. My proposed trip to our Kaduna plant was halted by my manager, who cited budget reason, moreso as it was something I can do by calling our Engineers and Accountants over there. . . . . kai, my boss burst my bubble, I just wanted to go and rest and relax in Kaduna for two days, what I wanted to go and do wouldn't have lasted 3 hours. I go catch them another time!

I started this thread yesterday to open a decent discussion on how NL is gradually becoming a reference point in online discussion of Nigerian affairs. Pitiably, like any other thread on NL, religious bashing has overtaken the issue at hand. I was utterly shocked to see what the thread has been turned into.

Can't we have a discussion in NL without it degenerating to religious/tribal war?

We Muslims have been accused of being violent and always causing trouble, but can anyone go through this thread again and tell us who deviated this thread to religious war.

The first derogatory comment about a religion was obviously made by David, viz:
which "steam"? I thought politics and religion sections died after 2007, obviously you too are relatively new comers. There was a time you could spend 24 hrs on politics and religion sections . . . that was before the slaves of allah had the moderators run everyone out of the religion section.
I'm not exonerating oyb either, but do you guys think anyone can see such insult on his religion and keep silent?

I'm a Muslim and I have never hidden it on NL, and I don't see any reason why I should not defend my faith where necessary, but the point I'm making is that in discussions that have nothing to do with religion, why do we easily turn them into religious war. The religion sections have been made for us to discuss religions. But it seems some people follow you around on this NL, deliberately uttering provocative comments about your religion, making replying inevitable.

Richyblack is a respected voice in Politics/foreign affairs sections, yet his signature, like mine, carries a religious(bible) verse. I see nothing wrong in making people know your religious disposition/affiliation. Myself, Lagosboy,Auwal,Muza and oyb are perhaps the Muslims that roll with you guys in politics sections, yet quite active in religious section. Olabowale and Babs87 hardly come here. Are we not Nigerians? Are we not welcome here?

The last thing I expected while opening this thread was religious war. Nairaland, and indeed Nigeria, is for all of us. I will not be discouraged to open threads discussing our dear Nairaland, nay Nigeria.

Can we continue to have a decent discussion on the future of NL, as it gradually assumes a prime position in the marketing of ideas on Nigeria.

Who are these 'Nigerian YOUTHS' we speak of? That term ticks me off!!
It was actually the word of Kayode Komolafe(One of ThisDay editors). The assumption many people have is that most of us internet forumers are in our twenties and early thirties. And sincerely, that is easy to assume.

Politics › This Nairaland Has A Bright Future! by Jarus(op): 11:03am On Feb 20, 2009
This Nairaland is fast becoming a reference point in online discussion in Nigeria. Until spammers took over the job section, NL had risen to become the number one port of call for job seekers in Nigeria. When I mentioned NL to many people, the first thing they mentioned was 'are you finding job?'. Although the job information reputation of NL has since been eroded, other sections are also now becoming recognized, nationally.

4 out of every 5 people I talked to were already aware of a site called NL.
I'm convinced top journalists and columnists in Nigeria do visit NL to read what's going on. Joe Adeyeye of Punch once quoted NL in his Saturday column. I read one article by a top Nigerian journalist a couple of days ago, and he talked extensively on what was going on among Nigerian youths on the internet, in an apparent referral to NL. So all these people know what's going on here. I met Modibbo, ex-FCT minister on facebook and invited him to join NL. Dapolam, aspiring for House of rep in 2011, has been dragged to face the court of Nigerian youths.

I will not be surprised if Pat Utomi partially meant NL in his recent comment on 'internet warriors'.

This NL may soon become Nigeria's most popular one-stop internet community, commanding reference nationally!

muhsin:
Greetings,

Am sorry to go a bit off topic, but I would really like to say; Igbo people, among other Nigerian tribes, do hardly convert to Islam as far as I know. Any idea on why this is so? Thanks for your response(s).

Muhsin
It is so because Islamic preaching efforts are not as strong in Igboland. Imagine this: A neighbour that went to serve in Enugu state said when he was performing ablution, the kids around were watching him, amazed at what he was doing i.e they had never seen somebody do that before. When he mentioned Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) to them, they didn't know who he was. Their best guess was 'Murtala Mohammed, former president. That is how ignorant they are about the message of Islam.

Those that heard about Islam and converted got to know about Islam when they travelled to West/North or overseas. I know one Igboman that heard about and accepted Islam in Dubai. A very high ranking executive in my company from Delta state, for example, is a Muslim and he finished from the University of Liverpool. He converted to Islam(and converted his mother too). I think he learnt about Islam and accepted in UK.
