Christianity EtcRe: A Dilemma (or Is It A Conundrum?) by JeSoul(f): 1:27pm On Jun 21, 2011
^I know you do sir - which is part of what just makes you so darn awesome! smiley Thank you!

I have thought long and often about the phrase 'sanctity of life' (I don't even like the phrase self) . . . and cannot bring myself to see all as the same - especially when the life in question has shown he/she does not value life.

. . . just musing.

MyJoe:
Plus lots of guiltless people get whacked. . .  by the state. Wouldn't you say that is another problem with it?
The only case against the DP and this is addressed today by not applying it where guilt is not beyond a shadow of a doubt - at least in the society I'm in.
Hi MyJoe. Even, when people are guilty, their is no spiritual bases for death penalty in my opinion. Neither the state nor an individual should harbor the desire to kill another human being even if that person is a criminal. Murder remain murder even when a murderer is the victim. Death penalty is lacking in both love and justice and do no seek ways to rehabilitate the criminal and turn him into a new path. Even if the criminal is a pathological murderer, murdering him or her is not the answer if the aim is to protect society from his evil ways. Society can be protected from his activities by removing him from the public space, and there are non violent ways to do this. My view is that the unconscious or conscious urge for revenge is the motivating impulse for seeking death penalty and not the urge for justice or for protection of society from the activities of the criminal.  Violence is a viscous circle and will only breed violence. Violence reprograms the brain making it virtually impossible for the spirit to have any influence on the physical body. Once human beings are subjected to so much violence , all that you will see is the crudest form of baseness. Neither the state nor individuals should encourage any form of violence and the first step  in this is for all nation states to abolish death penalty. Stay blessed.
Appreciated.

But could not disagree more and could not articulate my belief as well as you have. But simply put, I believe in crime and punishment and justice meted out accordingly. And as a christian living by the bible, see no case against it but infact just the opposite.

Joagbaje:
You are right

Psalms 34:2
2 My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

It is not a sin for a man to boast ,so long as it is within his jurisdiction. If he make boast of the Work of God .  What is wrong is making boast in someone else testimony without working yours out

1 Corinthians 3:21
21 Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;

Paul had his own boast.

2 Corinthians 10:14-15
14 We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you with the gospel of Christ. 15 Neither do we go beyond our limits by boasting of work done by others. Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow, our area of activity among you will greatly expand,

Jesus had his own boastings

John 3:35
35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

John 16:15
15 All things that the Father hath are mine
:
There is boasting in the Lord - where the glory goes to God

And then there is boasting in yourself - where the glory goes to yourself

Judge for yourself, is a man standing on a stage in a luxurious hotel dressed in expensive clothes, declaring the billions in his bank account - glorifying to God?

Please Joagbaje, do not compare the humble words of our Lord Jesus speaking on the incomprehensible greatness of the Father, or Paul showing off the good works of conversion and subsequent fruit in the church - with the despicable utterances of a foolish man talking about how much money he has in his bank account. PLEASE DO NOT. I mean do you not see the great difference between the two?

I have listened to Pastor Paul back in my early days as a hustler and I am proud to say his Motivational speeches preaching really got me gingered-up to knuckle-down and get on with Life. I think he is being honest when he says he is a motivational speaker, most Men Of God are not that honest? wink
Being a motivational speaker is certainly not incompatible with being a pastor, and being filthy rich is def not a sin or crime. What is incompatible and thoroughly despicable here is the arrogance, pride, ego, boastfulness, greed and love for money these men reek off . . . it would be better if they did not name the name of Christ thereby bringing shame to His name whilst perpetrating all these nonsense.

^Image, snr brother, mehn, na you sabi oh.

As of this morning I checked my wine rack to see if it needed re-stocking . . . I'm still good for at least another 4 days cool

I re-quote the verse you used to end your last post: "For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost."

If wine does not work for you and you choose - out of faith - to abstain from it, then blessings be upon you. We must not look down upon those whose faith allows them to partake of it. I personally do not think that 'wine' in the scripture is a general term for drinks but hey . . . your believing so is by no means a disqualifier - as long as no one is trying to impose their own personal belief/interpretation as law or truth for the entire body. Cheers! *pun intended* cheesy

nuclearboy:
I think the Apostle was speaking to his and God's definition of the word "Christians"! That word "Christian" is the problem as it is a much abused and misapplied title.

As used by Paul, a Christian cannot be found in any of the situations you have used as an example. Fornicators (talk less of rapists) would not have been considered Christians in his day or by him. Swindlers, manipulators, craddle-robbers etc also would not be considered Christians at that time. That I believe, was the extent of purity of the Church that Christ left behind. Ananias and Sapphira remain a case in point showing how pure God wanted His Church to be.

With that in mind, the manner of "matter against each other" that Christians would have had in those days, would be such as disagreements likely based on misconceptions and/or inadequate knowledge of the situation. Sitting down amongst other Christians then would have clarified issues and restored love.

TODAY however, Pastors are thieves, serial liars and swindlers, murderers and criminals. To all intents and purposes therefore, the definition has changed and we see how people tell us blatantly that Ananias and Sapphira are the real Christians because they profess and "at least, they are doing something" as we see bandied on NairaLand so often. Shebi Ananias at least gave half abi (and advertised it) while you kept quiet (having followed the injunction of secrecy)?

I have always seen the Bible (and God) as dynamic. "With the Pure, I will show Myself Pure and with the Perverse, I will show Myself Perverse" is what the Word says.

IF THEY CAN GO OUTSIDE THE PURVEY OF CHRISTIANITY, THE VICTIM HAS EQUAL RIGHT TO GO TO SECULAR LAW.
On point!

^I didn't leave anything out jor. You may want to read your own post again - this time in its entirety and see the message you're passing across. The gop had absolutely nothing to do with Weiner's departure and using catch-words like 'targeted' and 'finger in it' insinuates that his exit was part of some grand scheme by those evil republicans 'targeting' liberal politicians. As if the whole of congress is not one giant mudpit full of predators going after each other.

If you had no intent to implicate the gop even on a minute level, you could've simply said "weiner resigns due to his own stupidity" - just like every other poster before you had done.

But anyways, as you go home tonight, remember when the traffic light changes from green to red before you can go, don't forget its those evil republicans at work again tongue.

There are crimes we commit against each other and there are crimes we commit against the laws of the land - and sometimes these two intersect. I think each situation is different and should be approached as such.

If a 'member' of the church despoils a child, not only will I call the police, press and anyone else who will listen on him, I might be tempted to unload my 9mm on him as well. I have dealt with a christian producer one time who took my money and never delivered the services. I simply let it go and warned others not to do business with him. If the amount of money were larger, I would've probably tried to get it back one way or another.

There are various levels/degrees of crimes - and subsequently levels/degrees of response - and hence levels of punishment.
now they are hammering targeted democratic "hitmen". Weiner was one congressman I love to watch on the floor of the house. He's out. (obviously due to his stupidity, but I see a bigger picture. This is the finger of GOP)
What in the world are you talking about? huh angry

Did the republicans put him under mind control and trick him into taking multiple unclothed pictures of himself and his stick? Have you seen those pictures? Do you see what a shame & disgrace they are? Did the republicans make him post them on twitter? did the republicans make him send those unclothed and lewd pictures to countless women? including one a teenage girl?

Just like conspiracy theorists who blame the west for everything, you always find a way to blame republicans for everything. The next time you blow a tire, or burn your fried rice, or stumble on an exam, or anything else, just blame the republicans - that seems to be just about the only card you know how to play . . . so go 'head - just blame the republicans.

grin grin this is the quote of the year!

Some might insist that what is filth here is subjective (although I personally know what I think of those who use religion to make money) and the only way to persuade the objective baby Christian that you have the grain is to use scripture verses.
For one thing, while heated words maybe inevitable, but we are certainly better off without them. There are other ways to make a point. But I guess it’s our nature, as I see it everyday. The cleaner here makes a blunder. Omo girl wastes no time in telling him what a clueless dolt he is. It comes to my attention and I ask her if her objective was simply to shame him or help him avoid the mistake in future. Besides, it is one thing to call someone a hypocrite in a conversation, but another thing to open thread after thread just to highlight it. That is probably what he finds disconcerting and it’s called bullying. (Not that I have any illusions there is much mods can realistically do about that sort of thing, just trying to clarify things and put them in perspective. I think he is going to have to devise his own means of handling things.)
It’s not when you are the victim. Seen the British horror movie, "The Tormented"? Doesn’t capture my point but gives an idea.
Thank you very much for your usually balanced opinion MyJoe. I have noted your points and will keep them in mind as we proceed forward. Really, thanks!
