South Africa is set to deport 56 Nigerians, The Nation learnt yesterday.

The Federal Government has been notified of the planned deportation, which is coming barely two weeks after a row between the two countries.

The deportees, who have overstayed their visas, applied for asylum because of alleged political “crisis” in Nigeria. They appeared before an Asylum Panel in South Africa and their applications were rejected, it was learnt.

The South African Government checked and discovered that Nigeria is not experiencing any political problem to have warranted asylum for any of its citizens.

shymmex: I'm a full blooded Nigerian guy; born in Lagos, but left for the UK when I was 4-5 - and I have lived here since then. Though, I've lead 90% of my life in London, but I still consider myself a Nigerian. I speak both pigeon English and Yoruba language fluently; and I know Nigerian history, cultures and traditions better than a lot of Nigerians that have never left Nigeria. I just find it condescending and naive when I meet "fresh" Nigerians, and they tell me I'm not Nigerian enough, or I'm a "Jamo". I also remember the first time I applied for a Nigerian passport at the Nigerian High Commission in London; the guy over there told me I wasn't Nigerian; despite having full Nigerian names, and speaking Yoruba to him.

I just can't understand why most Nigerians are like this.

Just because a police officer in south africa beat someone, march him with his boots and slap him very well before arresting him even, the officer was discharged and arrested and the case is in the court right now. The video was posted on the internet and air in etv live. I just imagin how many officers in 9ja has been arrested 4 unlawful beating or fighting.

Evidently, this is a clear case of xenophobia. South Africans must have been nursing irrational fear and hatred for Nigerians. they link Nigerians to crime, drug trafficking and prostitution.

in any case, I personally feel they reserve every right to dictate any medical test they deem fit as a criteria for an entry clearance into their country- be it genotype test, dental check up certificate or whatever. However, I see no reason they should arbitrarily decide to deport Nigerians who have been granted entry clearance/visas sequel to satisfying the health conditionalities. it's just gross to punish people after they have met your side of the bargain and satisfied your stipulations.

as far as I'm concerned, the equation is not balanced yet.

Go and read about the story of what happened to Vodacom when MTN established in Nigeria. Till today, Vodacom is regretting their costly ignorance. Ever wondered why multichoice is more present in Nigeria than any other African country apart from SA? Do you know how many South African services exist and thrive in Nigeria?

Let me say it in pidgin english, Naija people sabi chop and enjoy life, but we no dey produce.

The above is the reason why we are a heck of a goldmine for businesses from developed nations. The advantage SA gat over other countries is the continental and regional familiarity. They can exist and do business with all the inefficiencies in Nigeria. That is difficult for people from other continents.
