Journalist ravaged by breast cancer ‘God, if only this cup can pass over me!’ By TESSY IGOMU Wednesday, March 18, 2009 •Nkechi before now, full of life Years back when Nkechi Nwagbo, a journalist, had a stint with Daily Sun, she was ebullient and full of life. The cheeky, robust fellow, who dazzled all with her unique way of dressing, was difficult to offend even as she carried herself with grace and charisma. Gap-toothed Nkechi was never found without a smile. Indeed, her dentition would make the likes of Ireti of Fuji House of Commotion go green with envy. She was an epitome of vivacity. Her absence for a long time from office did not raise any eye brow. It was believed that as it is the vogue with her ilk, she had left to look for greener pastures or probably moved ahead to face other promising life challenges. The suddenly, on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, the graduate of Mass Communication from the Lagos State University (LASU) reappeared on the pages of Daily Sun. It wasn’t a pleasant reunion, however. Nkechi has been suffering from that disease aptly described as every woman’s nightmare, cancer of the breast. The journalist was one of those that benefited from a cash gift of N500, 000 doled out by Skye Bank through Care Organisation Public Enlightenment (COPE), a breast cancer awareness network, located in Ikeja, Lagos. Hiding her pains behind a face full of smiles, Nkechi posed for the camera as she received the donation from Mr. Kayode Akinyemi, Head, Corporate Affairs, Skye Bank. But behind that calm façade was a soul in pains. She was rustled and in turmoil. Nkechi was uncertain about the dimension the alien ravaging her body would take. She knew that it was just a matter of time before her entire system would succumb fully to the poisonous fangs of the monster spreading through her body. Despite her condition, she exhibited strength, while speaking about her predicament. The only time she almost gave way to emotions was when she recalled her experience at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), and how their delayed diagnosis is almost costing her her life. Nkechi had told Daily Sun last year: “When I noticed what I thought was a harmless lump in 2007, I went to LUTH for a test. Even before any test was carried out, the attending nurse and doctor told me emphatically that it could never be cancer. I really believed them based on their wealth of experience on the job.” For five months that she waited for proper diagnosis from LUTH, the mole inside her right breast had wreaked considerable havoc. “By the time the diagnosis was out, the whole breast was totally taken over by cancerous cell. We had had to visit other health institutions for treatment”, recalled Nkechi. Continuing, she said: “We sought succour at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, but nothing came out of it. My file could not be found when it was my turn to see the doctor. I had no choice than to return to LUTH, where I went through chemotherapy sessions.” Speaking about the energy sapping therapy sessions she had had to endure to expunge the disease from her system, Nkechi said she does not bear any grudges against the doctor and nurse that put her life on the line. She also appreciated the efforts of her spouse, Allison Nwagbo, for his unwavering support. Hear her: “It has been a horrible experience. The lump, in no time, developed into sores and festered. Before I started chemotherapy, the sores were emitting some terrible odour that made people keep away from me. Chemo is very expensive. A session costs N150,000, apart from drugs. The pains I go through after each session is unquantifiable. I end up weak and nauseated for weeks. I also experienced loss of hair, darkening of tongue, nails and skin. I don’t know what I would have done without my better half. He has proved the true meaning of love to me.” That was Nkechi eight months ago. Today, this beautiful young lady is a ghost of herself. Her eyes that once sparkled now look gloomy in their sockets. She lives each day in untold agony. Today, Nkechi is begging Nigerians not to watch her waste away. The promising young lady who now gasps for breath and winces in pains is calling on well meaning individuals to come to her aid. The little money she gets from people, she noted, is spent daily on drugs. Distressed Nkechi urgently needs N15 million for treatment, feeding and accommodation for two months in The Bahamas. That is the only life line that can make her survive this excruciating ordeal. Speaking in a voice almost muffled by pains, she said: “The disease is beyond surgery now. The hospital has offered to treat me. I have sent them the test and photograph of the affected parts that they requested. Our visa is also ready. The only problem we have now is finance.” Time is really of essence to Nkechi. The Bahamas hospital told her that she must commence treatment within the next month to avoid further spread. The young lady lamented that she could hardly afford her drugs now, not to think of raising millions of naira for the treatment abroad. “I am expected to travel with a person who would take care of me. Our visa would soon expire. I am praying to God for a miracle,” she said. For the treatment of cancer of any form, time is really of essence. The more time is wasted, the more strength ebbs out of her. Time is all it takes for the disease to spread its poisonous tentacles to her entire system. Nkechi has not lost the will to live despite the incredible pains that wrack her body constantly. Unlike many cancer patients that have resigned themselves to fate and wear despondency on their faces like a cloak, Nkechi is reaching out to Nigerians for help during this dark hour of her life. “Like most women that have breathed their last after a long fight with cancer, Nigerians should look at her with a heart of compassion. Nothing is too small to partner with this woman on her path to survival,” noted one of her former colleagues. Nkechi could be reached on 08027609618. Donations towards saving the life of this ebullient journalist may be channelled to account no 4111406119 at Zenith Bank. The account’s name is Nkechi Nwagbo. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/citysun/2009/mar/18/citysun-18-03-2009-001.htm
