Oga, people have very different realities and experiences.

I've moved to the UK as a:

1. Being Single
2. Being Married with just partner
3. Being Married with a partner and child - (son)

I can tell for for a fact that the experiences are all very completely different and the hardest one was moving with my partner and a child. Even with my early on experiences in the UK, i still struggled greatly.
It got so bad I moved my family from Sheffield to Newcastle due to accommodation problems. This is even after a landlord kicked us out of the house because other people complained that the baby was not letting them sleep at night.
In case you're not aware, some landlords have instructed agents not to let out their properties to families with young children. Already it is difficult to get accommodation as a foreign student, now imagine a foreign student with a family...

I will not advice paying more to get accm, but if thats what you have to do to get your family sorted out, by all means do it.
Yes its more difficult to move a house with family but its still doable if you put in the hard work. I have lived in many cities in this country and the process is still the same...i take my time to search, call and email landlords, get rejections and finally get a place.

Any landlord will kick you out if your kids are disturbing other tenants, its an anti-social behaviour issue, that a lone will get you kicked out.

Yes some landlords will not rent to students because students are likely to move out leaving rent and bills unpaid, leave the house messy and landlord has to pay more to refurbish it for the next tenant.

Above all that, many landlords are into student housing full-time! Have an agreement with universities to rent to students.

Why you wait for that why not get BnB accommodation ? They are a lot cheaper than hotel or AirBnB

@Justwise and all, I was the one who that shared my refusal letter some weeks back. I got very useful advice from here. At a point I wanted to give up but God came through. Got a new CAS and re-applied, decision came out positive in 7days. Thanks to everyone and particularly those that suggested I apply for a new CAS rather than AR.

All Glory to God Almighty.
Congratulations!!

This is totally true. People need to be more strategic about moving otherwise undue desperation sets in. Offering to pay more for accommodation pcm not even deposit? Naah

He may be the 'son of a dead millionaire' indirectly he has increased the cost of renting in that area or encourage the agent to expect such offer from other foreign students.

I wouldn't advise you to use one in my opinion. Get the required funds in a bank account then when you get to the university, you can present your loan to them.
Sorry for your refusal and thank you also for helping others learn from it by being open about it

This is what is good with open discussion like this

Any reasonable person currently looking for accommodation in the UK at the moment would obviously understand the urgency, a lot of people have posted issues about getting accomodation. UK currently has a surge in obtaining accomodation and you are here telling people about conditions that exist 10 years ago.

A student lands in the UK and spends two months in an Air BnB looking for suitable accomodation, meanwhile spending cash paying for alternate accomodation, but you are here saying people should offer lower than the advertised price, you think I want to pay more, like are you joking or something .
If accomodation was easy then why are people complaining about it.

Jack of all trades and master of none, no human has knowlegede on everything, we learn everyday and people grow by accepting their deficiencies. I have posted an agency page asking for offers and you are still here arguing about what I dont know.

The only reason I posted it is to help people with large families obtain accomodation faster, imagine a family of five paying for hotel accomodation for two months, imagine what they can do with that money instead.I met a family in Newcastle , they have been staying at an Airbnb for 5 weeks, the man was depressed. No one expects you justwise to have knowledge on everything, and when you encounter issues that you have less knowledge about, then try and learn from it, and not just start arguing blindly because you dont want to feel limited . A lot of people here are looking up to you for guidance , ego tripping is not helpful to anyone.

There is a current accomodation crisis in the UK and getting accomodation is hard at the moment, if you dont know then ask. People are struggling to get accomodation, people are bidding to get accomodation, do you think I have money to throw away by making an offer? I really dont undertand what you going on about.

The whole point of this place is to get direction on how to navigate current issues that effects schooling in the Uk,I know at least 4 people that made the same move as I did, and they are setteled now, after spending weeks in hotels looking for accomodation.

The United Kingdom opened up PSW and they have more applications this year than they ever had, there is three times more applications than they had last year, three times more people looking for accomodation, and obviously it has affected the real estate industry. Oga ,its not rocket science. sometimes I struggle to understand you.
You are just lashing out because you got called out for making a mistake.

Why do you move abroad with larger family if you have no accommodation waiting or made an arrangement for one?

When you failed to plan then you planned to fail, you have two options when moving abroad with family of 1,2 or more.

1. Main applicant moved first, stay in a hotel, BnB, AirBnB to settle, get accommodation before moving the rest of the family.

2. Pay for student accommodation for one semester, use that opportunity to get something cheaper and suitable for family.

Its not rock scientist that if you moved with larger family it will cost you a lot to stay in a hotel or AirBnB.

The reason you gave for the lack of accommodation is not true because:

1. We have had PSW before for many years and there was no accommodation crisis then.

2. The UK was still a member of EU then hence many EU students and other EU members can easily troop into the UK as they wish but still many foreign students still get accommodation.

Years ago when i moved from Bradford to Portsmouth, i travelled to Portsmouth first(this is about 6hrs journey) stayed in a hotel for just a day, got list of private landlords from the university and the next day i viewed 3 properties and was able to get one. I moved back to Bradford to pack my stuff.

Yes you were desperate for a place and that was why you offered to pay more than the asking price.

I don’t have any doubts about the genuineness of the Agent and the landlord and the suitability of the house because I have a relative checked it up properly before payment was made. Thank you

Good evening esteemed people

Please I just need clarification again. I know it's been said here but we've been getting conflicting information from outside

I've got kids all under 8 and they are my dependants travelling to England. Are my kids supposed to do the PCR test before they travel or it's when we've arrived that they are suppose to do the days 2 and 8 test.

I've read on the gov.uk site that kids under 11 don't need to do the test unless they are over 11 but I'm being told now that it depends on the airline that we book

Please those who have gone with their families and those who've got more knowledge on this, can you kindly help? I've already booked pre travel test for just me and my Mrs.

@justwise and everybody please, it's urgent

Thank you
Exemptions – people who do not need to take a test

Children aged 10 and under do not need to take a pre-departure test to travel to England

Yes I got a tenancy agreement
You took the risk by paying for a house you haven't seen, hopefully your visa comes out before the first one month of that rent runs out, most importantly i hope the whole thing is genuine.

If the visa delays beyond this month then there is no point paying for the second month and you need to communicate this to the landlord

What are the options? Can I ask the landlord to suspend the rent counting for now? How do you think that could play out. I am also wary of the losing the apartment I know the kind work done to get the place. The rent has started to count from last week
1. How much is the rent?

2. Did you get tenancy agreement?

Paste the refusal letter here and black any personal details, the refusal letter the agent sent you may not the original one.

The name of the form is make an offer form and not desperation form .

You renamed it desperation form, when they asked for an offer they are probably expecting lower than the asking price but you went higher and they thanked their lucky stars.

I am guessing you dont understand how making an offer works when trying to rent a place. I have attached a screen shot below , the agency name is https://secure.rentmyhome.co.uk/offers/5403 ,when you see a property you are interested in, you make an offer through them directly to the landlord and wait for a response. In this case the let was £875 and we made an offer of £950 and then you wait for a response.Several other people would also make offers at same time.

Thats exactly what I said, hope you get it now.
You still don't get it, nobody gives landlord or letting agent more than asking price of a house, you are desperate and decided to offer them more money and they gladly accepted.

I just gave hint on how to secure accomodation faster than the desired, i wasn't assuming or guessing. Most of what I have listed here is exactly how I got my accommodation for a family of 5 in Newcastle. I offered additional £70 to what was advertised and we got it almost immediately after two moths search,by the way we had been offering to pay 6moths upfront and could not get any.

So when you say this is not true, that is not accurate .

Its not true that renting is open for bidding, you paid more because you want to but not because its the standard. Who wouldn't want to get more money if offered?

Ordinarily Letting agents are willing to milk you dry let a lone when you offered them free money

Nigerian community?
You left Nigeria and you still dey find Nigerians?
Unfortunately, Nigerians abroad are generally no different from or less dysfunctional than Nigerians in Nigeria - you're more likely to find their strange and rather senseless feeling of being in competition with themselves than any genuine desire to help. Relate with Nigerians as individuals, and not as groups, you're more likely to achieve something that way.
Valid point!!!

TheGuyFromHR:
Correct.
And all the rush to secure property close to school makes no sense and simply drives up prices in that desired area. Anywhere you live within commuting distance is fine, remember that a) you will have other commitments in that city aside from going to school, e.g. your place(s) of work could be anywhere in the city, and b) as students you can get discounted bus monthly or weekly passes and bus passes generally allow for unlimited travel on that service in most cities.

For those who have children, your priority should be finding areas with good schools, and living as close to them as possible, because that is the best way to make life easier for yourself. Centrally located schools are usually not as good as those farther out in the suburbs, for instance. All in all there's a mix of factors you take into consideration when house hunting, not just living in Akoka because you are going to Unilag.
Exactly!! renting close to university can be expensive including bills.
The very first thing you have to do when you get here is to avoid paying more for ANYTHING, i mean ANYTHING, else your money will be gone within weeks even before you get a job.

Students struggle to get accommodation because most students move out without paying rent and bills. This brings me to the next point...

When you move into a new place call the utility bills companies to change the contract, gas and electricity, water, internet etc...so that you don't pick up bills left by the previous occupant.

Good evening guys,

please how can one rent a place for family of 3 in either doncaster and surrounding areas. its tiring as i have called various agents all to no avail

kind help. we leave soon
Check this website https://www.gumtree.com/property-to-rent/doncaster/private+house+to+rent

Register in that website first then go through those houses and email the landlord, warning!!...do not pay deposit until you get to the UK and view the house.

You can also pay for school accommodation for just one semesters then use that opportunity to get something better for family.

Doncaster is a cheap place to live so you should be able to get something pocket friendly

Babababy:
Some tips on how to secure accomodation.

1.You need a UK phone number when registering on sites like zoopla, onthemarket etc. You can register with your Nigerian number though, but they wont take your request too seriously. They would usually call to follow up an application and once its an International number ,your chances of them calling you is very slim

2. Most of them would request you to view the property, a viewing request means you have to be in the Uk or have someone that can view on your behalf.Viewing also shows serious intent .

3. When they advertise a property for rent and place a £500 rent on it, just an example. When communicating with the agent, make an additional offer of like £550 instead, you are more likely to get a response from the agency. They dont tell you but most rentals are up for bids, and they like a higher bid because the agent gets more.

4. Download your right to rent status, and attach it to your application. It would eliminate any ambiguity the agency might have about your immigration status . You can get your right to rent status from this link attached here

https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-rent

5.It would help a great deal if you have a current job, sounds like impossible because you are a student but it Is what it is. During the pandemic, the government mandated that waivers should be extended to people who cant pay rent hence a lot of landlords were short changed. Most landlords now basically want to rent property to only people with jobs, who can pay the rent

There is a current surge in rental properties at the moment, and its a contest getting accomodation. Once a property goes up for rental, they get multiple applications and the agencies are mostly interested in tenants who can pay rent, and your student status is apparently a disadvantage.

The link below can also help in understanding some pointers

https://www.ukcisa.org.uk/Information--Advice/Preparation-and-Arrival/Planning-your-housing#layer-3094

Finally keep trying, something would eventually turn up
This is not true, if the house is advertised for 500 or 1000 that is exactly what you should pay, you don't offer to pay higher amount, you can offer to pay more than one mouth rent deposit in advance just to secure the place.

If you want to get a house quicker as a student look for houses a bit away from your school, 15-20mins distance, houses closer to universities are in hot demand now but by Feb up the demand drops.

Alternatively..rent school accommodation for only one semester then move out after that for a private accommodation which is cheaper.

If you are renting through an agent you will be asked to pay additional fees for their services, for paper work and even renewing that tenancy agreement.
