@saxywale and all contributors, I promise to have a healthy discourse with you guys once it's devoid of insults. I left the discussion cos the ist and subsequent reply I got from the so called modetator@ justwise was insult and that was childish. Ist I was shocked....nigerians abroad on this thread are actually trying to convince a foreigner that Nigeria is so bad and irredeemably so. this guy from Bahamas is even trying to tell us it cant be so bad that we will loose hope but you guys kept talking about corruption, leaders and I was ashamed of myself. Why do nigerians behave like this? Why do nigerians complain when they are maltreated by foreigners abroad when they themselves actually go out of their way to convince the foreigners that they are very corrupt people. The leaders are taken from the people so if the leaders are corrupt, it is because you are very corrupt. But the guy said something that is very important....
Corruption is a cause of underdevelopment not the cause of it. Why do the same nigerians behave well abroad at least relatively? Cos of development!! You can evade tax back home cos there is no technology to enforce payment, to cross check your actual income, to even identify you. That is what is affecting every facet of Nigerian life. Underdevelopment. We blame our leaders for everything but how many of our leaders are in FOREIGN PRISONS ?....is it not the ordinary nigerians that travelled out of the country that destroyed our travel image that made other countries shut their doors against us? 419 is actually committed by ordinary nigerians not our leaders. The people that gave us bad image about our travel profile are nigerians in diaspora....the same people that are now solely blaming the govt. You said the remittances was more than 34states GDP( not 34 combined but 34 individual states)...meaning remittances from all nigerians abroad is just more than GDP of a single state so all the remittances were not up to any two states combined meaning it is still less than 2percent of the GDP. Why is lagos GDP more? Because lagos creates avenue for self employment and collect revenue from thriving business.? Yesterday, I was proud of myself that I contributed my own quota to the nation economy....i went to file my tax returns for 2014 yesterday and I discovered that as a young man in my early thirties, my business contributed more than 1.5million naira to lagos state and more than 250k to federal inland despite the fact that the law had no way of knowing how much I actually made last year from lack of technology meaning I didn't pay all naturally and every human being was guilty of that. when I travelled through Europe, my wallet was stolen in Paris, our luggages left in the bus were tampered with in Rome and some guys took advantage of us as tourist in Prague. They are oyinbos that did it.....so everybody can be corrupt but the system can ultimately make it next to impossible to enrich yourself with our common wealth using technology. yes...electricity is not that bad. we use generators but we can afford it for now till it improves we won't stop making govt accountable. I don't lack electricity for 24hrs in a day though I augment with a noiseless generator that can power anything and I am grateful that I can afford it like many around me. Justwise made 17milluon look like a big deal.....for an enterprising Nigeria, it is not a big deal and I don't need to say more than that. An uneducated ibo will make it in lagos in 3months. Nigeria is conducive for business....we only need hardworking nigerians to explore our potentials not those that will run away and be discouraging the ones making it at home. tnks

I think you are getting me wrong. I do not criticize your decision to work in London. In fact it is a cool place to work and live. I support your doing so. I have a brother living in Spain, although he has never worked a day in his life. I am just stating that GENERALLY it is bad for so many people to be leaving or trying to leave that it, firstly, makes it hard for genuine tourists to travel visa free and, secondly, takes so much of the talent out of the country.

...and of what use is the talent when you live in a country where it's not recognised nor utilised? In a country like Nigeria you don't die of blind patriotism.

My statement that visa free travel should be allowed for Nigerians DOES NOT contradict my view that people should generally not migrate for work. Visa free travel would of course be granted only for those entering as tourists. I think it is ridiculous that a person in Nigeria cannot simply get on a plane with a passport and visit Britain, which was after all the colonising country and the 'mother' of the empire. Do British people need visas to visit Nigeriahuh? There should be equal respect and reciprocity.

British people need a visa to visit Nigeria. There is absolutely nothing wrong with immigrating for work, there are many Americans and other EU citizens here in the UK working, has that stopped their individual countries from developing? Chinese with all their wealth are here in the UK starting businesses and settling down permanently, has that stopped China from developing?

I met many Nigerian friends when I studied in the UK. I never had the impression that Nigerians needed visas to enter even the UK. Is it not a commonwealth countryhuhhuh? How on earth can citizens of a commonwealth country need visas to enter the UK, the home of the head of the commonwealth? I think that the Nigerian government can do more to convince other countries not to place visa restrictions on Nigerian passport holders.
If you want the UK to include Nigeria in the list of visa-free countries then that goes against the stay-at-home argument. Visa restrictions are put in place to control immigration, so in that it should help Nigerians stay at home and develop Nigeria? Of course not, do you want Nigerians living abroad to return home when their chances of getting kidnapped is high? Infact the northern part of Nigeria is almost no-go-area for any Nigerian apart from the militants.

How will you stay back and develop Nigeria when you will be lucky to get 7hrs of electricity a day? And this is not because Nigeria can not afford to have constant electricity...no, since 1980s billions or trillions has been 'spent' on the same project by different govt regimes but the same result...darkness.

I don't know about your country's annual national budget but i'm tempted to boast that 4-5 Nigerian politicians are richer than your whole country, don't ask me what they do.

Cool I studied in the UK (university of Hull and Kings College, London). I agree that Nigeria is FAR FROM a poor country. But how can you not agree with me that the country's chances of development suffer when its human resources migrate??

By the say, corruption is a RESULT of underdevelopment, not its cause. The less developed a country, the smaller the middle class and the less well it functions as a democracy. Development reduces corruption.
Nigeria does not lack human or financial resource, Nigeria lack honest leaders, so staying back will not solve the problem until the politicians stopped stealing. Nigeria is not a country that needs resource for development, Nigeria does have resource mismanaged by systematic corruption.

Corruption in the case of Nigeria got little to do with underdevelopment because its from the top.

Nigeria is 'poor' because she is rich.

But I still agree with the gentleman who says that it is best for most people to stay home and develop the country, although I am not at all criticizing those who choose to move abroad - that is your free choice, which I respect.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to have to get a visa just to travel to the USA, Europe or anywhere. Yet that seems to be the result for many innocent Nigerians because of those who migrate illegally and overstay. Their misbehavior hurts the whole country. In that regard I agree with the commentator who says it is always better for most people to stay at home and work, to develop the country's economy.

Where in the USA do you live?
Bros staying home to develop Nigeria is the less of our problems. Endemic corruption is, Nigeria is not a poor country.

I'm in the UK not US

You from one of the wealthiest countries in Caribbean with a population of less than a 1M, so you can afford to stay back.

Nigeria is a basket case of Africa so you can understand why many want to move to a conducive environment

Speaking, respectfully, as a non-Nigerian, he does have a point, does he not? Remittances will never develop a country. It would indeed be better for more Nigerians to stay at home and develop their country. I would personally NEVER immigrate from my country to work abroad and it is good to see that there are Nigerians who share that mentality with me.
That is very simple to say but practically almost impossible to do. Sorry if you don't mind me asking...where are you from?

That is normal, they don't tell you right there if you have been given or not.

foolish. I will stop trading words with a fool like you. You are so happy that Nigerian remit money back home from working as slaves abroad and you think you are making sense with your slave mentality. You are commenting on a thread opened to make nigerians at home look like they envy you and the guys made you look like a fool cos to you... 17million is too much for a deal. how much is the percentage of Nigeria GDP your slaves sent home from abroad? How much do Americans, British and Australians make from money sent home by their people working abroad? You think that is how they develop a country? Exporting our best brains as slaves instead of exporting manufactured products and technology? People like u would have been jobless if not for the way our passport has been destroyed. You now talk about visa everyday on nairaland and you think that is an achievement cos you are a moderator you keep talking to people anyhow. Fool
You are definitely an embarrassment to yourself, so in your own little mind every Nigerian living abroad are doing slavery job? He claimed to have made 17m as a middle man and you believed him? You are such a joke. If you want to know how much Nigerians remitted yearly then google is your friend, it will be a complete waste of my time educating you on that.

in your usual myopic self it will be difficult for you to understand. You are all complaining that nigerians at home are envying you and the guy says he has no reason to envy you cos he makes more money than most nigerians abroad and u quickly conclude that he is Bragging. You are already hating on him same way u accussed your poor friends in Nigeria of hating you cos you are in America. The bubble is burst . Many of us back home now make more money than most of our friends abroad and that trend will continue so more nigerians will stay at home and we don't care whether you are in America or not. That is what will boost our economy and our passport not guys like you that make visa look like ultimate thing when others just travel with the passport around the world without visa
Obviously talking nonsense is in your DNA, even somebody with a single brain cell will know that some people in Nigeria are doing pretty well but that is below an average Nigerian. Any muppet can come online to brag about making 17-20M a week or a month but that is silly because we can not verify that.

Only an individual with a brain of a jellyfish will pray for somebody who pays tax and have two jobs while living in a country where basic social infrastructure is lacking and govt sells job application forms even when applicants stand little or no chance of getting that job.

Only a close minded Nigerian will think that not traveling will boost Nigerian economy forgetting how much Nigerians outside Nigeria remit yearly back to Nigeria.

If other countries take such narrow minded view then there will be no foreign investments and that goes with the jobs that comes with it.

I am planning to apply for visa in Doha, Qatar as we reside andd work here. But so many mis information about from our Naija people here that if you tell the VO that you want to go give birth in US they may deny you visa because they will know is because of citizenship bla bla bla. I have tried to explain that is normal and hiding that you are pregant is even what they hate. But our ppl reasoning is always negative.

I want to know if one can truely apply from any US embassy just because you want to go and give birth or is only happening in Africa (Nigeria) only because of the health standard. Because is part of what ppl are saying here.
Please clarify. Thanks.
Don't waste your time listening to such people, some Nigerians will always look for a way to circumvent any legitimate system and think they are smart but the opposite is the case.

If you are living legally in Qatar with a good job then you got nothing to worry about, the most important thing is to proof that you can adequately afford it without it affecting your economic situation back home.

Good luck.

Hello all, I had my baby on the 1st of jan but I didn't inform the embassy dat I was going to give birth in america cos I already had my visa b4 I got pregnant.
My tummy wasn't big when I came in dec and I didn't have any challenge at POE. The guy didn't even know I was preg and I just told him I was here for vacation.
I hope there won't be any issue when I want to renew my visa
Keep all your receipts and other documents because you may be asked when leaving the U.S. and during visa renewer. I really don't know why people hide pregnancy from the embassy and at POE even when they can afford to pay for the delivery.

Good luck though.

@justwise, Happy New year, the last time i asked for your advise concerning applying for a uk visa during a friend's graduation ceremony, you advised that it is better to have a business account instead of using my savings account, i now have a business account, depositing my daily sales earnings into it for the past 6 months, please, i would love to send a confidential message to you via email, if you don't mind.
I can't remeber telling you that, this is your first post here. Yes you need business. account if you are a business man but you also need savings or current account and tax certificate.

As long as it's visa related I rather have the question openly here.

@justwise, you provoked d guy to say what he said. I actually believe in such people. Look.....malaysian passport can take you to more than a hundred countries without visa. common Malaysia. You people are so happy that they give u visa. The travel section of nairaland is all about visa while other countries talk about where to go to for vacation since visa is not even a problem. I went on a tour of europe..14 countries in 3wks and I was d only one on schengen visa. Australians, malays, Canadians that we travelled together all travelled with only their passport. Yet my own visa and passport was the one most scrutinised at each entry. Until Nigerians start staying in Nigeria, making money in Nigeria legitimately and blowing it such that the oyinbos will know that we won't want to leave our country cos we make money in our country we will keep begging for visa so I salute the guy for making money in Nigeria and blowing it. It is not our govt that destroyed our passport it is our attitude....believing that a guy that makes 17million should pray to be like a driver in America just because u think America is a better environment. My dream is no longer visa for nigerians....i am dreaming of the day I will travel the world with my Nigerian passport without checking a thread on nairaland on how to get polish visa when the polish themselves are slaving away in uk
You are just rambling, jumping from one pointless point to another.....read the topic again and see if you have anything to contribute.
