girlfio: Got some great news today people, they've sent us the email notifying that my husbands refusal has been overturned!! smiley We've just got to arrange for his passport to be sent to Sheffield now for the visa. I'm so lost for words, this has been such a difficult process and even though there reasons for our refusal were flimsy, its still so easy to doubt that you'll get a positive result. We were refused because my bank statements were printed from my online account so I had to get them stamped by the bank. My payslips were not on headed paper so I also had to supply them with a letter on headed paper determining the validity of my payslips. Then finally I didn't supply them with enough information proving that the address where we were going to live was suitable. I just give thanks to God that He has fought this fight on our behalf. My greatest encouragement to everyone is that you find your faith in God, He will guide your footsteps and lead you to that place of victory. Thanks to everyone for your support, love you guys like family. smiley
Definitely a great news indeed! Congratulations!.

I hope you still log on here to help others as you have been doing.

fg17: Oga Justwise, thanks for the reply. as you pointed out the cost of laptops in Nigeria will also depend on the specification eg. doucore AMD processors with 4g RAM and about 500g HD could cost about N80k upward. While recent android phones are from N35k.
You can buy a very good lappy with better processor with such amount here

Konjour: If you're not dead beat on buying 100% Brand new gadgets there are loads of places where you can get such for incredibly cheap prices. Like someone said earlier, Phones4u, Ebay etc are nice for getting bargains too, however if its phones, Laptops that you need, Argos is not the best place for you at all. They are a sorta jack of all trades and master of none. If you wanna get the best phones at their cheapest prices, check the nearest 'Paki' store close to you. A Paki store is what I know to be the retail stores owned and operated by Immigrant Asians, or British Asians especially Pakistanis and Indians and there are lots of them. I don't know how those guys do it but if you want the latest gadgets locked and unlocked, they'd have it. And unlike most stores where the prices are fixed, their's are negotiable. They don't offer phones on contract either so its 'cash and carry',but be very smart cuz you can easily be sold a faulty phone as much you can be sold a phone in perfect conditions. If you want a large variety of laptops and other gadgets to pick from at very reasonable prices, I can recommend Debenhams. Lastly on price compatibility with 9ja prices, its almost the same except for gadgets that are not second-hand, the prices for new gadgets might differ significantly, and by that I mean higher in 9ja. » My Opinion.
That is the last place i will advice anybody to buy laptop or phone, any good laptop or phone you buy too cheap from them is most likely a stolen or damaged then patched up one, those group of pple are the most fraudulent you can ever come across, they are the equivalent of Nigerian 419ners/yahoo yahoos.

Ebay is the best place to buy such thing, register with ebay and Paypal, its safer and cheaper.

ochukoccna: I use glasses and am thinking of seeing an Ophthalmologist MD to have a comprehensive look at my eyes when my boots are on UK soil
Way I figure, better facilities and a more accurate diagnosis awaits me there than here [remember the iconoclastic Gani's wrong diagnosis here]
Even thinking of doing corrective laser surgery rather than collecting glasses/spectacles if the cost isn't exorbitant
Can our UK brethren please enlighten more on Specsavers and Optical Express which I came across during my cyberspace journeys?

Also can you help breakdown how our health needs [students] are taken care of over there?
Do you register with the NHS, their general hospital or what?
Please teach us out of Naija freshies grin grin

Also Justwise and those already in the system is an NUS extra card a benefit?
Please enlighten us
Thanks
This will not be a problem, during your orientation you be advised to register with a GP, you do that after getting your student ID, and permanent address, all you need to do is to visit NHS center in your area and they will book appointment for you to see an optician who will tell you what to do.

peteafrik88: I think buying gadget frm any side has its advantage. 9ja is cheaper on the long run but you feel more secure when you do that in the UK whc is expensive. In my opinion, buy your phone ib 9ja and maybe get a sim only contract line at a cheap price, though mostly for UK calls only and not international calls. One big advantage of buying gadgeta here is the insurance u get with it but the 9ja ones do not have such and the fate of your gadgets are left in your hands, incase of theft, damage or loss.
I will say dont miss buying your Laptop here in the UK though very expensive compared to 9ja. We all know how funny laptops can get at times.
That makes it even more expensive, insurance is optional, you don't have to include it in your contact. Laptop is not that expensive here..though it depends on the type of laptop and its specification.

fg17: Please I would want some advice on this: Which is better, buying gadgets like laptop and android/iphones here in naija or buying them in Uk.
If in Uk, how can one go about it. Thanks
That depend largely on the specification of the gadget, how much does laptop/iphones cost in Nigeria? Then i can tell you whether its cheaper here or in Nigeria

And since you spoke about been low on cash, you might not dig cafe browsing
Seems you are all for school accommodation, good for you cos I'm not
But anyone serious about private accommodation would start his/her search from Nigeria

School accommodation is a no-go-area only if you are swimming in cash, its expensive and restrictive but socially beneficiary especially for new students.

Private renting is cheaper but never ever pay for accommodation you did not see physically and sign tenancy agreement , avoid signing group tenancy agreement because if one person moves out the remaining tenants will share the cost of the empty room.

Go for all bills inclusive (water, gas, internet and electricity), go for single bedroom for a start (if you are on budget) you can move up to double bedroom when thing improves......

735 i: I think this thread has been derailed a little. I'll try to bring it back on course.

I got into the UK yesterday and i headed straight to school. BTW my school is about 1 hour away from London. I didn't pay for school accommodation so I'm presently staying in a hotel (hoping to sort out accommodation on Monday). It's setting me back 45 PPD but; it's kindda worth it.
i commenced registration today...i have only met 3 Nigerians. 1 of whom is a Phd student. She's prolly less than 27 years. (Omo...i shame for myself when she tell me..)
I can see loads of Britons, some Europeans, and couple of Indians and Chinese. Trying to understand their accent though; they speak very fast.

Tips;
If you can afford it; pay for accommodation on campus.........In the long run; it's more convenient.
Make friends with; Arabs, Europeans, Asian and African.....In that order.....(A friend from Abu Dhabi can change your fortune with a phone call to his father)
Don't carry too much luggage...You'll have more varieties here...
Bring a sweater and as much cash as you can; it's getting cold.
Open a dorm account.
If you have an unlocked iphone; Bring it along...There are invaluable apps here.
Bring Gala and Lacasera or Viju..Their snacks na die for here!!
Will update later....
Within weeks you will know how expensive that is

babeface3: majority understand the three major languages in Nigeria including the minorities. And besides, everyone must not understand the three major languages before they are used at the airport to ease sufferness.

It is not bad if other indigenous languages like the major 3 are employed to better inform people of flight schedules
....and if the majority are not among those traveling? They have to now demand that announcement be made in their own language as well?

English language is our official language and announcement can only be made in English language to avoid different ethnic groups demanding that announcement should be made in their own language

blank: Funny pics. The people posting them are scam baiters. They get scam emails and then knowingly play along with the scammers. Then they tell them stories like they are pastors in church of the fish and bread. They can't give out money if the scammers don't become members of their church. Some of the pictures above are examples of the membership initiation rites.

The scammers think they have gotten one mugu and are ready to do anything to get the money not knowing that the joke's on them.

hasano5: Thanks for the reply.

That is what I want them to do. I am asking if, for example, the last transaction was a deposit which means the balance will increase, they will not take this amount into consideration because 28 days did not pass for the deposit. What do you think?
As long as you have the complete money before your last transaction then your last transaction does not matter as far as 28days consideration is concerned

hasano5: Hey there guys

Quick question. If I had the money that they need for a consecutive 28 days period, and, I deposit an amount, for example, on the 29th day... in this case, they will consider the amount I had before the deposit and ignore the recently deposited amount since it did not pass 28 days. Is that right?
That is right

How come every single one of them that promotes that agency associate with SEVIS payment doesn't use the same agency?

Sweet kid? You must be having a laugh, fowl mouthed wannabe you called sweet kid? Unfortunately you can't see many of his hidden posts in Celebrity section full of swearing words/insults that you will wonder if he got any respect for himself let alone somebody else.

By the way he is not banned from logging on here, he is only banned from posting, so he can still read previous posts on how to pay SEVIS or tips on interview.

babeface3: Is it that the announcers at the airport must speak in that near oyibo accent or is it the rule that they must announce flight in such way?

A woman yesterday missed her flight and had to pay extra after lamenting her fate, having missed a very important event at Abuja. According to her, she could'nt understand the English spoken by the flight announcer when she was suppose to board.

I think this attitude looks ridiculous, and typical of most things done in this part of the world. While in Europe, all the airports through which I had traveled made necessary announcements in the local languages before making such announcements in English.

Is it bad if announcements are made in the 3 major languages in Nigeria before such English spoken with funny twang. shocked
How about Nigerians who doesn't understand those 3 major languages?

ebiphi: Pls I need ur advice on this.
I need ur candid advise. I applied for tier 5 visa and was refused with the excuse that the COS I submitted wiv my application is invalid. I ve applied for an administrative review, which was delivered in sheffield since on the 27th of august 2013. Since then I ve nt heard anything from them. My question now is do I contact them to ask for the progress of the review or just wait till the 28 days is complete? Pls if I am to contact them, wht mail address of phone no do I use? Many thanks as I look forward to ur reply
Who sent the review to Sheffield? I don't think reviews are handled in sheffield.
