Romance / Re: My Boyfriend Broke Up With Me Because I Got A High Paying Job by Juwohn: 10:05am On Jun 03, 2022
He is not being reasonable. You got a job with an almost similar pay meaning both of you can pull twice his salary together as a family. But him with his ego believes that you don't need a job -- taking care of you or whatever that means.

It's not a crime to be a woman, you are just dating the wrong guy. Runaway from him, even if he changes his mind later things will get worse in the future when you get promoted --by then you would be pressured to do things (resigning) to save your marriage.

julie90:
I have been working for this company for two years. In December 2021, there was a change in management, a new manager was assigned to my Department. Before the change in management, I applied for some jobs in November 2021 but I didn't get any response.

Things between my new manager and I developed really quickly (he is not married and he is 10 years older than me). Although we have been working together, when he became the new manager we started dating. it was mutual, it wasn't like he forced me. We liked each other and we started dating in March 2022. We kept things professional in the office. Nobody in the office knows about this even till now.

Those companies I applied to in November 2021 reached out to me for an interview. I got two offers at the same time. Both offers come with great pay (similar to what my boyfriend currently earns) and a significant boost to my career. I spoke to my boyfriend about it and being my boss he told me to reject both offers, he told me he would be able to cater for my needs that the only commitment he has now is paying for his house and once he is done paying for it, he would have more money to take care of me and I didn't need a job where they would pay me what he's currently earning and be in a role similar to his.

I told him it's not the money but it would be about moving up the ladder in my career. These are offers people do not have, now I have two, he is asking me to reject them. He told me even if I have to move the only offer I should take is the one close to the company where we work which has a lower pay compared to the second offer. I told him I would go with the second offer which has more opportunities for me. Both offers are in the same state although my preferred offer is a bit far from where I live but it is still a reasonable location to commute everyday. At one point he told me, I was too ambitious and I took it as a compliment.

I noticed he changed since then, he informed the company management that I was leaving and we began the handover process, I noticed he changed after we had the discussion about me accepting the second offer but I thought it was about him missing me. May 31 was my last day and I noticed few days to my last day he was acting strange so I asked him what the matter was. He said he doesn't feel anything for me and we should stop seeing each other.

This is a man that was really excited when we were dating, all of a sudden doesn't feel anything for me because I got a high paying job? Is it wrong for a woman to be ambitious? When has it become a crime for a woman to aim high in her career? My role will still be to support him. I have never been rude to him and I am not going to be rude to him because we now earn the same salary. I really like him and I feel disappointed that he could act this way.

Is it now a crime for a woman to be ambitious?

I do not think the school has that influence. I have message my school on several occasion but their respond is that they can not expedite the process.

Did you send a message to your school?

If so can you share their response?

Did you email any other person in the embassy that you think we can also message for assistance?

WITS has a strong influence. Email the international student office, and they might be able to help you-- at least if your department can confirm that you can still enrol in the programme.

You have to apply online through the TRMS platform then you'd pick your desired bank to collect it (https://www.tradesystem.gov.ng/index.html) but please note that this is subject to the availability of USD or ZAR in the branch you chose else you may have to try another branch. I had to liase with like 5branches in my own case to get some.

Very useful information. Do you require a return ticket? Or do you think just a one-way ticket would be enough?
Travel / Re: General South Africa Visa Enquiries by Juwohn: 12:15pm On Jan 11, 2022
As someone who has invited several friends and families with no rejections, I can tell you that none of that matters.
It all boils down to your cover letter and that of the person inviting you. If it’s just very empty - I mean no substantial family/friendship link or how they can guarantee your sustenance and departure from the country - it will most probably be a rejection. Also, if your letter doesn’t corroborate theirs, it will probably be a rejection.

If these letters are strong enough and well written, the other things can be overlooked - I say this from two recent similar experiences as yourself. The hotel reservation was cancelled, and it was way past the scheduled travelled date before the visas were granted.

All the best.

Travel / Re: Travelling Into Nigerian (MMIA) Is Uber Safe To Your Destination Within Lagos ? by Juwohn: 9:38pm On Oct 09, 2021
Remember to remove all flight tags from your bag. The risk of harm is lower when no one knows your origin compared to when they know you are coming from a very developed country. Without a tag, you may have as well arrived from Benin or Ghana.

oldienavie:
Hi guys, I need experiences from people flying into Nigeria(MMIA) Lagos.
My family is not going to be able to meet me at the airport this time and I am weighing up my options with transit.

I have a friend who said he knows someone that does transportation that he can come pick me up and take me to an hotel, however I am a little skeptical with that option with the high rates of insecurity in the country.

My opinion is that sometimes being annonymous to your service provider is better, but I am a little concerned with the security level of Uber in Lagos.

Are uber drivers known to kidnap their clients particularly people boarding them at MMIA ?

Can uber hold their drivers responsible if something untoward were to happen to their clients, or if they are known to connive with kidnappers etc ?

I just need experienced info and also from uber drivers to make a better decision.

THanks all.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: How To Reply When Interviewers Ask About Your Previous Salary by Juwohn: 5:17pm On Jan 20, 2021
Second is more realistic. Some jobs require you to include your previous employer as a referee and they could verify this information during a call if they decide to have one.

This is a bit quite easy for me. You tell the truth but wrapped in a well garnished unverifiable lies.
If it is 200k I have in mind but I currently earn 70k. You can go either of these routes

1. My gross salary is 840k per month but the company rents a two bedroom flat for me worth 300k per annum; of an average in a year I get a bonus of between 200-500k per annum; the staff bus picks me up everyday and I am entitled to a free lunch that is worth about 300k. I am actually looking at a range of about 2.5million per month if I won't get all these benefits.

2. I have currently work in this recent capacity for 2years at 840k per annum. I am currently due for promotion any moment from now and because of my impressive appraisal scores, I should be looking at between 1.5-2.0million as my salary range. I am looking at 2.5million range for this role in your organization

It is unlikely that there will be physical classes next year or at least in the first half. If you're not planning to work [STEM] while in ZA and will be studying MSc (Research) or PhD at WITs, you can register out-of-seat and save medical aid cost.

This meeting has very less to do with the elections. If you check one of the links, there was a meeting - more like a review of scenario under which the ban can be lifted. That is why there is so much emphasis on the national identity number and linking the database to several others so that criminals can be easily be tracked. Tolu Ogunlesi tweeted something about this some weeks ago that Nigeria has created a national identity database with information about stolen and lost passports etc.

Hello everyone, I need your help here.
A friend of mine has just been posted to her PPA. A photo of the assigned accommodation is attached. The house literally has no window. I mean, the space is there but no net and no cover and the flat is on the road. The room can easily be accessed by anyone via this window. I feel like this is totally not safe for anyone most especially a lady considering all the social vices in this era.

I'd like to seek your opinion regarding this. Would it be justified if she returns home until she's provided with a safer accommodation or until she is able to find one? Would no appearance at PPA under this circumstance be punishable?

This house is not habitable in my opinion and the host is unyielding - they don't want to do anything.

As a Nigerian that you are, have you ever heard any of our leaders in Nigeria calling out South Africans as lazy people Never.

Now, how many times have you heard South African leaders calling Nigerians in South Africa drug lords and prostitute ring leaders Of course, countless number of times. That is why their people continue to echo it instead of the system fighting crime in its totality.

For your information, our leaders form the narratives; they mould and influence our beliefs. The local leaders in South Africa gave meaning to the general perception of an average Nigerian in South Africa - for political gains.

See ehn, at some point we have to be very honest with ourselves and put sentiments aside. South Africans are not echoing anybody's voice, they can see. I have met Nigerians who are doing really wel. But I have also met a few "other" ones. In JHB there's a dedicated spot when stolen items are handled. It's full of Nigerians. But does that mean that Nigerians are criminals? Nope.

Reading some posts here is even enough for any one to judge Nigerians and I think Geenosko is doing a great job trying to enlighten people but my point is let's not be quick to label your host country as a failed state. You can't paint my home in a bad manner and expecting me to warmly embrace you.

You mentioned that their people echo it but is it their people alone? Every single country in this world is skeptical about Nigerians. Is that also for political gains? In addition to visa application fees, US imposed an additional 100USD on Nigerian applicants to cushion the security risks that some Nigerians cause the US.

Let me attempt to explain the bolded part and maybe address the other issues you.

The categories of visas that lead to permanent residency in South Africa are very limited, and I will list them from the top of my head,, Spousal visa that's five years, Critical skills maybe two to three years.

I get your point, but these can be any country and I feel like it doesn't mean that the policies are not immigrant friendly. Policies are changing almost every year based on the need. Beyond STEM, I have a friend in Accounting who got his PR even before the end of his masters. I don't know about now but according to the DHA website, if you have been married to a PR holder and living in ZA for five years you qualify for a PR.

You can be working for a company here on a work visa which you can renew at intervals and even after ten years on such visas, the immigration law doesn't give you any pathway to permanent residency, compare this with countries that are more welcoming

Do you mean years spent working does not count towards a PR? I don't think so. If you have had a work permit and been working for five years, you qualify for a PR. If you have a permanent job offer, you qualify for a PR.

student like wise can start from undergraduate to Phd or masters to Phd and all the total time spent in the country doesn't count towards any thing with respect to settling down in the country after studies.

The home affairs regulation states that PhD holders from South African universities are entitled to the critical visa and subsequently a PR.

I somewhat agree with you that people in STEM and those with critical skills have an easier pathway to permanent residency, but let's be honest those people are a very tiny minority and I believe that you are in SA, most job adverts are for SA Citizens and permanent residents and not like these jobs are readily available, SA economy was already messed up before covid19.

This is true and I get your point in trying to clarify to those attempting to seek greener pastures in SA. I'm just trying to call your attention to not labelling SA as a failed country even when ours is not doing better. Every country has a responsibility of taking care of her own and that's exactly what SA is doing. If there are enough jobs in NG, we would not be going everywhere. It's getting tougher and tougher for Nigerians to get any visa not only SA and it doesn't mean that this countries are immigrant friendly. Except maybe if you have a different explanation for "friendly"

Quite a significant number of companies in the hospitality industry have strong preference for foreigners for quite a number of reasons, I have on quite a number of occasions have to recruit staff for different hospitality groups I can't mention here and this supports my claim.

Are South Africans hard working , yes they are but you are more likely to come across the entitled ones than those who really want to put their heads down and do the work

The entitled - that's exactly what I was thinking. "The entitled" are everywhere but how do we even define entitled. Someone demanding for their right to a suitable working environment? Some companies would rather employ a yes-Sir foreigner not because the foreigner is doing any better but because they can push beyond limits. Some Profs would rather accept a foreigner because they can forcefully push him/her to do things against his/her mental health, some SA would never do that and it doesn't mean they are lazy. Some prioritize family, others prioritize health. I have heard someone called South Africans lazy because he would call them late in the night for office issues - is that being lazy? I have met a number of South Africans who are doing very well in their job and I've met some who are just there. But that's just the same everywhere - even in Nigeria.

Geenosko:
Summary of our epistles here is that SA is very "immigrant unfriendly"

You can be here for 8 years legally and still not have a pathway to Permanent Residency. The way their immigration system is designed, it's very unwelcoming.

Secondly SA is not a place to come and hustle and even if you have critical skills, it takes "luck" for you to get any job.

Thirdly The average South African has this resentment against foreigners especially Nigeria. It becomes worse when you are doing well. I once sat my colleagues down and told them, I have the immigrant mindset which means I have to work hard and you guys have the entitlement mindset and are mostly lazy. That's why some companies prefer foreign workers because they are committed and hard working. You employ South Africans, the next thing na unionism and strikes and they cripple your business.

The bolded - I do not understand what you mean by unwelcoming. There are several Nigerians who have become permanent residents in less than two years. It is a known fact that if you in STEM the likelihood of critical skills and subsequently, PR is higher. It's only difficult if the application is not in compliance with the home affairs policy - and I don't think that is easy anywhere else. I do not know about other disciplines, but I envy the folks in computer science. With an honour/masters degree most of the ones I know (of course with very strong grades) are already sorted. And to even think that until this year, getting a visa to visit Nigeria is a nightmare for many Africans in many African countries.

The italicized - I just find it amazing that we label South Africans as not being hardworking and likely to cripple a business, but we [Nigerians] don't want to be labelled as drug lords. Action and reaction.

My fellow nairalanders
Good afternoon

I have been a member for close to a year now.... Even though I have been a guest for about 2 years before joining.

I have sought advice here twice and your advice has really helped a lot. Please help me once more my people

I just got admitted into a school in the south East while my parents live in the North.

My parents (my mum especially) pleaded with me to stay with her eldest sister and her children for a while, at least for my first year in school

I didn't want it at first ... But I had to agree just cuz of the way my mom was now on my neck.
She worried I knew nothing about the east.... She wanted me to get a bit used to the East

With the help of my dad..... She succeeded in convincing me to stay in her sister's house.

My first weeks in the house was quiet peaceful and fun not untill my cousin brother started looking for his biscuits

Funny right

It seemed funny that a 23 years old dude would turn out to be a devil just cuz of an ordinary 100 naira biscuits.
Mind you ... He is the only son
He asked everyone and everyone denied taking it. He asked me and I too denied it.... Cuz I didn't take it.

He beat hell out of me... Insisting I was the thief.
We became almost enemies and didn't talk to each other for about 2 months.
Aways from that ... We reconciled tho

But he still remained a trouble to my life
Always beating me as if am an animal.... He beats his sister too.

But it seems mine is worst
He has stopped me from sitting on a particular chair in the parlour.
He bullies me ... Telling me there is nothing I, my parents, or anyone can do to him.

I received the beating of my life today because the Tv remote got spoilted and he is insisting it's me. He accuses me of virtually everything that goes wrong in the house.

I'm getting sick, depressed and it's affecting me alot.

I don't want to disturb my mum about it ... It might cause problem between she and her sister
I don't want to be the cause of anyone's quarrel with another person.

I wish to go home. And I can't go back home now ... Cuz of the Corona virus and the inter state lockdown.

Please what do I do ?
Help me out
He gets worst by the day.

I'll suggest you bury the hatchet and reapply as advised. And don't make any reference to the earlier reason you were denied.

Just do a fresh application and hope for the best this time.

Best wishes

I think you should reapply and make a reference to their speculation if you're very convinced that you have never been deported before.

"You had previously applied but was refused a visa because the consulate suspects that you have been deported before. However, you'd like to mention that in your travel experience you have visited x countries but have never overstayed your visa and never been deported from any country. You believe that the suspicion may have been an error and you look forward to their kind reconsideration of your application."

SA claims to treat every application as new but I don't think this is entirely the case.

According to a recent analysis from the South African community survey which was conducted in 2016, Nigerians account for less than 2% of the total immigrant population in South Africa. This is in contrast to immigrants from Zimbabwe who account for about 40% of the entire immigrant population. According to this analysis, citizens of countries in the Southern African region account for more than 75% of the total immigrant population.

This analysis is one of the latest in view of the recent attacks on migrants in South Africa. In addition to statistics for international migration, the analysis also examines internal migration flows within South Africa across the nine provinces.

On a first glance, you might not see this, but just live among them for a while, you will begin to notice the deep hatred they have towards black africans, especially Nigerians.

I have been living in SA for close to 5years now. I have NEVER experienced the extreme hate that you mentioned. I have had a very good relationship with all my landlords (except one) and neighbours. I wonder where you stayed when you're here and what exactly you did that warrant that hate you mentioned.

This uprising will not stop, as their government also wants low income foreigners to leave. Stop encouraging Nigerians to go south africa where at all levels they are discriminated against. Besides, 80 percent of Nigerian's living in south Africa are extremely poor, as people over there would rather trust a snake than a Nigerian.

80% of Nigerians are not poor. 80% of undocumented Nigerian immigrants may be poor anyways. Tbh, and I think I have mentioned here once, I am very reluctant staying in a neighborhood where Nigerians are alot too. We don't trust ourselves yoo so why would SAfricans trust us. I have seen pple come to this country with visit visa and then on arrival requesting for asylum - boko haram and other lies. It's just very sad the desperation.

For once, Nigerians in SA please speak the truth. It is this falsified information you spread that makes many Nigerians rush to SA and end up jobless and go into illegal businesss.

Do you know how many Nigerians have been killed by south africans and their policemen? Because it has not happened to you doesn't mean it is not happening. If you have any respect for your life or you believe you have any sought of future, do not go to south Africa.

Those who are here based on illegal businesses already have that in mind before coming. How do explain someone with a visit visa for 2weeks with a large box.
The number of Nigerians that have been killed in Nigeria by Nigerians is far more than those who have been killed in SA. Our different ethnic groups can't even live together peacefully but we want other people to be peaceful with us.

Killing is bad but we must be truthful with ourselves. If our country is good we won't be here. And that our country is bad doesn't mean we should cast our burdens on SA. And it's not only SA, the whole of Africa doesn't want us. I know an African country that would never let a NIGERIAN VISIT their country. No tourism, no visit except for business and by a reputable organization. It's sad but last last we'll be alright
