I dont think the 6 speeds are lazy. They shift according to your throttle input. Its 1:1 happens in 4th gear.

I don't think what the OP is offering is premium service; I see it as standard instead.

There are people who are willing to pay for standard services, as long as they are getting value for money. For many of these people, the most important question for them is "can you fix it?" They will avoid you if you sound cheap. Counterfeit is a big problem in Nigeria. Most of the things you buy off the market are fake, and might even break before you leave the market! Even those who stock genuine products keep them away, until you say you want the original. Personally, I have learnt to spend only if I can get value for money.

Coming to the Camry analogy, if you have spent 15k+labour three times on a fake part in a year, won't you be better off spending 40k once on genuine part? I laugh when people argue that tokumbo is better than new. It is because they dont/cant find the genuine parts. Once, I asked my mechanic to change my brake pads because I was travelling. By the time I got to my destination, my wheels where covered in black powder, and my parking brake handle was upright on engagement!

As a mechanic, rather than work for 10 bargain hunters for 10k each, wont you rather work for 5 people who know value, for 20k each, or even less? You are better organised, less hassle, and lower overhead. This is because if you are a professional, you will always deliver standard service, no matter if it is a 1996 Mazda, or a 2018 BMW. In the 80-20 rule, wont it be nice if 80% of your revenue come from 20% of your customers?

Somebody here mentioned that so many car owners don't have the financial capacity to own automobiles. Some will want you to come to their house for 5k!

Yes we will and as time goes on by January, we will also be rebuilding transmissions with 6 month to one year warranties. We just have to see what mix we are getting to bring in the right transmission kits.

Not in any way inferring that you are quack. Just saying that as much as Nigeria car owners are frustrated, it is not all rosy for others either. Difference is that you are able to get your money back (most times) if the job is not delivered over there. In US for instance, dealerships can cut off a head to cure headache.

From your explanation, you obviously have a hard part failure. Maybe planetary, drum, torque converter, final drive, etc.

You can buy the transmission without the rear differential part and reuse yours. Don't go front wheel.

With metallic debris in your sump, I advise you replace the radiator also, since you may not have the means to flush the cooler line.

The Murano issue is simple. The transmission is a CVT. NS-2 fluid is required during service but a whole lot of mechanics will buy either seahorse or abro ATF and use it in servicing it.

Issue is compounded by owners who feel 'transmission is not changing' when in actual fact, the CVT is just doing it's job.

There is a Murano up for sale now in PH at 270k. I would charge 30k for the information to purchase. Engine and transmission not guaranteed.

latest one I saw last week Thursday was engine oil in a CVT tranny honda city 2007 to be exact.

normally the cvts are very sensitive machines which make them very very difficult for the average car driver to maintain on the long term. they are made for people with a keen understanding of how a car works or those who read manuals and ensure strict compliance..... how many Nigerians read their car manuals? Dem Neva read frsc road signs finish., dem go come carry ababio manual begin read?

secondly it has zero tolerance to abuse... a simple unplugged stuff here and there can cause severe irreparable damage

thirdly the trans does not accept just any fluid like u mentioned. here in SE once u mention gearbox oil, my broda they can even put palm oyel for u inside anything and name it atf.

fourthly the lack of mechanics, technicians and techniques to handle it. the moment u take ur car to a techie for something as unrelated to the gearbox, as; engine not revvingpast 3000rpm, he will just open ur gearbox after opening ur engine - there, right there ..... the trauma begins. like doctor treating cough by performing eye surgery.

lastly and most importantly, the persistent myth about murano and it's gearbox tranny.... when u buy a murano the first thing ur friend tells u is: why na guy... u wan dey buy gear every 6months? they have instilled fear in u already so when something totally unrelated to gearbox... like car not starting occurs.... they invoke that myth into their subconscious and if they manage to fix it by the rough quack and inexperienced hands of a Kareem, after spending a fortune; they will just sell it off immediately @ a devastatingly incredibly cheap price.... even the buyer.... broda; is buying to fix whatever he was not told, drive for six months and resell again.

I would drive a murano, only when:
1. I'm in Lagos full time.
2. I don't give the car to anyone for any reason @ all.
if u r going to the hospital and that car is the only one available and I can't drive, I'll beg Gazuzz to lend u that his premium customer service car that he leases.
3. u r my next door Neighbor That is owing me like 1m that I know u can't pay back. so service is free, from the debt also all vehicle related fees will be handled from that same fee.

From most I have read here, these failures are caused by the mechanics. Cvt's are very unforgiving when you use the wrong oil, and we know why. Since most road side mechanics we are used to do not know the difference between these oils, it should become the owner's responsibility to ensure the right oil is used all the time.

Mechanically speaking, cvts are easier to work on, given the tools and parts. They have fewer parts than the AT, only that it has unique characteristics.

that's how a friend in ibadan was trying to hammer home his point of the CVT being worthless by stating that a mecho close to him changed the trans,and the car didn't even move up to 2km before the gear packed up..... summary is the CVT is a bad thing to own

the problem with that tranny is lack of technical know how. the infrastructure and knowledge for handling such tech isn't too rampant in Nigeria.

I am curious. Is it not the same CVT we have in other Nissans? Maybe they use ATF instead of CVTF on those?

I know there are problems with the flow control valves but the failure is just too much. Do they also bungle replacement units? No one wants to near them.

Please, can someone educate me on why Murano transmissions are such a nightmare for Nigerians? Last week, I heard an owner sold his for 300k after transmission issues.

This may be an electrical issue. 50% of auto gear issues are external to it.

We don't rebuild engines because

1. We can remove and replace the current engine in a day, maximum 2 days. You cannot rebuild an engine in that time. We want fast money, not money that takes too much time to make

2. We do not want liability....pass on the liability if the tokunbo engine fails to the part seller...but we can claim the workmanship a second time to install yet another engine if the previous tokunbo was not fit for purpose

3. The parts to rebuild the engine have to be sourced from overseas, it will take time and our clients are not willing to wait or we have schooled them to believe that tokunbo engines are just as good if not better

4. Doing so is both a science and an art, not everyone is a master at both, and we don't feel the need to specialize or become master engine rebuilders, we don't believe that is where the money in this business lies and what is more, we have not invested in the education to make us great at this task

5. It is a messy job, we would rather not be bothered

6. We do not have the right tools for the job and because it is not a profit center we do not want to invest in the tools for such jobs

7. It is an exacting job that is unforgiving of mistakes, most of us are not that methodical and painstaking, we would suck at it, and we know it and so we had better not even try

8. We believe the cost of getting most engines tokunbo is less than the cost of workmanship involved in tearing apart and giving the in-place engines a new lease of life

9. our mates who do, do that without consulting documentation, and as a result such engines are not rebuilt to specification, and when they fail, we use those stories as warning to our clients that we don't want to do the same to your engine (but without the background that the job was not done properly and so it was bound to fail anywhere whereas were it done properly, it would be as good as a new engine)

10. We don't want to use the client's engine to do a test run of our capabilities or the lack of it.

The honda E2500 generator, Bought by my Dad in 1984, was hardly ever used as it was very noisy and heavy, it took 2 individuals to move it from the car garage to the front porch each time it had to be used. It was sparingly used from 1984-1986, not used from 1986-1990.

from 1991 it came to lagos, and was used intensively in an office on Allen from 1991-1998. And finally brought home for use.

That's when I got my hands on her

first problem was it was kept out doors, and didn't fare well with the elements, water got into the fuel tank, got into the electricals.

So I learnt how to clean tank and carburator, learnt how to clean coil.

Sadly I was not trained at any of this, and I guess I set the RPMs to high it was not long, engine started smoking, I had watched Uncle jamain ring our 1.3liter nissan prairie (horrible vehicle) and there were left over rings whiched I had kept for no reason.

Nah so I start o!

Open Cylinder head, remove fly wheel, the number of things I destroyed before I got to the crankshaft ehn,
is only God that will forgive me

I bought a hand file, and started filing the rings one at a time to bore size, put every thing back, took another day or 2 going to "Turner" blacksmith to re-thread all the bolts and studs that I had damaged started put everything back, and gen did not start, took another day or to for me to figure out how the ignition system worked and how adjusting the coil to low would result in no spark.

Passed that hurdle and the thing started o! No smoke for a few weeks, no oil shortage either, until one day the thing went prrrr ratatatata skibidipapa and boom boom boom engine don knock o! Connecting rod busted

Guess I had reversed the piston direction and possibly the connecting rod, and done so much harm to the engine.

Well saved up some more lunch money and headed to pencinima area with the old piston and conrod went to a generator repair shop and I got a shiny new replacement part, got home and installed it, engine ran but was rattling

Used a few days to brain storm what next I could do to reduce the rattle, I could see the excessive play on the crankshaft and new if I didn't reduce it, noise would still be there.

it is times like this I think back and laugh at some crazy things I did, there a difference between a circle, and an oval shape, the thing lasted for some time maybe 1month, but the smoke was unbearable, and I could not keep up with the oil burn costs, tried new rings, but was unable to do it like the first time with the nissan rings.

Long story short next knock was legendary, and I gave up on trying to salvage the generator.


Saved up more lunch money and other jobs, and for the first time in my life, I headed out to ladipo in the nissan.

Went into a warehouse and after long negotiations, Bought a suzuki engine that I could mate with the electric motor. Installed it, it was much quieter than the noisy honda, but the pulley was bigger and I did not understand the principles of gear ratios, so I could never figure out why with all that speed, I was getting low voltage

I got angry and sold the mechanical suzuki part to a vulcaniser down the street, and took the motor to Onyigbo and sold it for 6500 naira, in the 90's that was a lot of money I went and bought I better pass my neighbour, I used that gen at home and almost all thru university.
