AgricultureRe: See How Nigerians Are Killing Their Rice Value Chain by Koolking(m): 6:03pm On Dec 22, 2015

We need a revolution.

http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/195509-investigation-inside-the-massive-fraud-in-nigerias-n117billion-rice-import-quota-scheme.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter

First, it was petroleum subsidy scam, now it is our rice. How long will Nigerians sell their destiny for a plate of Thai rice? But, wait whose fault is it? Can they thrive if there is no market and appetite for it?

Last year I was in the UAE, stayed in Bur Dubai. I entered a Tesco Franchise store off Al Rolla crescent and picked up a 10kg bag of premium quality rice for 15Dirhams (1Dirham = NGN50). That's NGN750. This implies a 50kg would have cost about NGN3,750.
Now, this is not just about rice. I took a cab, 2015 model Hyundai Elantra to Al Mahktoum, driven by a young man named Hussein. Out of curiosity I asked him how much the car cost. He smiled and answered 55,000Dirhams with 0% interest bank loan and comprehensive 3rd party insurance. That's about NGN2,750,000. But same vehicle at Stallion Group, Nigeria is about NGN4million. So, what is it about?

This is about our greed and abysmal "long-throatedness". The desire to make colossal profit margins without regard to whose detriment is mind-buggling and infernal. So, this is not about whether Nigeria is importing or producing rice. It's just we are greedy and lazy.

All the companies listed in that scam want to make quick and huge money, whereas agribusiness takes patience and requires a long term investment mentality to thrive. The rice value chain in particular is very long. Several processes, so yes, instead of going through all that to refine the quality, they just catapult the funds out to import and then sell at ridiculous prices. But mind you they spend most of their time in such places as I mentioned above, so the price here is not their business. Go and ask Oba Otudeko how much a bag of rice is? If they have their way, a bag of rice will sell at N20,000 and a litre of fuel for N1,000.

Yes, I produce rice. But beyond that, for the sake of the economy, for the sake of our pockets for the sake of several millions of Nigerians that eat rice as just "a Sunday meal". Let's develop Nigeria's rice value chain. And your own contribution to it is by buying it and eating it. The rice the Thai family eat on their table in Bangkok is not international, it is local to them. So, let's stop the negativity attached to the word local.

It has chaff, it has stone, it is colored. Yes. But, with adequate investment, the indigenous quality will attain and can surpass foreign standard. Stone in the rice is not the farmers' fault. Rice is not planted in the air, it grows from the soil. Between harvest and bagging, rice loses over 20% of its weight in form of chaff, husk and other sediments as well as moisture. This is the terrain of capital-intensive investment, which is significantly lacking. The farmer can not be the one to plant and be the one to process at the same time. You cannot be the deceased and be the bereaved at the same time. There are people that view this nairaland everyday. There is somebody who has access to investment. Do you know that with just NGN50million, a major processor can be installed and operated in a strategic rice zone in the country that will service over 500 farmers and turn out over 300,000MT of quality rice per annum. Did I just say just? Yes, because there are people who spend that on just one or two cars, which become obsolete within a couple of months. Rice has no model, yes the varieties but there is no fashion attached to it just the appetite.

Let's wake up and stop our nation from being the global dustbin of everything. From rice, to frozen foods, cars etc. Let's make our nation great. Instead of looking for quick money invest in long term agricultural infrastructure. Every other thing may change, but we will always eat. That's the secret behind the lucrativeness of agriculture. Only that the Thai are using their "loaves of bread to pack our stew", crass exploitation of the highest order.

If 1 million Nigerians buy 1 Derica (small unit that measures 64 times in a 50kg bag) of Nigerian rice for N100 thrice a week. We will succeed in retaining at least NGN300million in the economy per month, and NGN3.6billion per annum that should have escaped as capital flight in importing rice.

Food for thought.

Regards,

Mykellio
Your commentary is thought-provoking, insightful and intellectually overwhelming. Agribusiness is a virgin goldmine. Sadly, Nigerians are only interested in Politics, 190bettings and ephemeral opportunity offered by Oil and Gas. However, I see HOPE

I would love Minister Fashola to deal with Estimated billings. This is the biggest fraud in the system. Majority of Lagosians are victims of this fraud. You pay 100% more than this proposed increase in tariff.

Where you patient with Jonathan?

Hypocrite
I am not a partisan fan, I rep progress. But let's be honest, Jonathan had been in government since 1999 when he deputised Alamieyeseigha in Bayelsa State, and later Governor. He served in the presidency since 2007, started as Vice President, and President since 2010 and was dethroned in 2015. He has practically been in the Nigerian presidency for Nine (9) years and in Nigerian government as key figure for 16years. Could you please sir (without any prejudice) enlighten us with some his tangible achievements from Bayelsa to Nigeria as a whole.

Jonathan had no antecedence whatsoever. what hoodwinked the people into voting him in his first election was HOPE. The south East, South South were clearly led by ethnic sentiments as opposed to what he had to offer as the much anticipated political messiah. The same mistake would have repeated itself if not that majority of Nigerians were wiser and needed real change from a personality and not political party.

Have you noticed the politics is who controls the oil reserves in those states, have you asked your self why states in south east there elections are not dissolved lol "My Jagaban really wants to drink the Niger delta Oil by all means necessary".

Give God what belongs to God and Cesar what belongs to Cesar, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom all belongs to PDP lets just respect that and find a way to work with those governors and move this nation forward instead of fighting them because a rerun election in those states will see PDP still winning the elections.

My Sai Buhari and APC are in power but not fully in control of the Oil rich states which they are fighting to reclaim to reduce the financing of PDP so come 2019, PDP won't be a threat for APC.
No state belongs to any party, not even Lagos to APC. Nigerians are wiser now. Nigerians have no business voting Parties nowadays but personalities. From all indications, Jimi Agbaje won the last election in Lagos, but APC rigged themselves in.

If the people of Akwa Ibom State are attuned to Udom Emmanuel as a person, he will be voted in again, otherwise APC personality will carry the day. The best parties can do to win the day is massive rigging for their candidate.

It's a big misconception believing that parties own states in Nigeria. Perhaps, it was not true before now. Not anymore

Sir, you are being prejudiced about the issue. If you consider this issue objectively, you won't be lashing at the Nigerian Army considering the precarious state the country has been subjected to. It takes pains to change an untoward behaviour. It's not the first time they blocked public road for their private activities, there is always a first time to change a-never-challenged-attitude.

It would have been fair to call the NigerianArmy coward if they had turned back at the hardiness of these bloody civilians. Their action smacked of terrorism in this time fraught with danger. Nobody is above the law and lawlessness by a group should not be allowed to go unpunished. They got what they deserved. If this kind of action was taken by the youth in my community, I would support extreme punishment as last resort.

To be sincere the shiites were moronic to attempt restricting the movement of the Nigerian army on a road in this country.

Such insolence is intolerable, who do they really think they are..

People keep mistaking freedom to practise their religions to mean inconveniencing others.

You have your freedom to practise what ever religion you deem fit but it doesn't mean you have the right to force others to adhere to your religious dictates.

But why is it there are no water canon, rubber bullets, tear gases that can be used to disperse such rabbles and not use live ammunition on civilians..

Civilians are the ones under the protection of a Sovereign state, if the states starts killing them i wonder where else can be safe.

matters involving the citizens of a country should be delicately handled
A civilian who respects his or herself will be respected. Civilians should be well aware that the country is in precarious state, therefore defiant to constituted authority (worst when it emanates from a Moslem) will not be treated with kid-gloves. Threatening to kill a general means war. The military is not the Police.

It does not take away the dignity of any civilian to respect the law and steer clear from inappropriate use of public facilities. The only short route to suicide in this present state of the nation is to damn the military and stoop above the law on their watch.

A word is enough for the wise

PoliticsRe: Umar-Jibia's Letter To President-Elect Buhari About The Shiites by Koolking(m): 3:58pm On Dec 16, 2015
Daninya11:
Shia is about the oldest sect in Islam. After the death of Muhammad (peace be upon him) who was both a messenger of Allah and a political leader, the Islamic faith continued to grow under the rightly guided Caliphs. It was during this period that the present day Syria, Iran, Iraq, Egypt and Palestine came under the control of Islam. However, the Jews who were expelled from the city of Madina by the Holy prophet because of their treachery and were watching these developments with agony decided to react by sponsoring some of them to pronounce Islam in order to have the license to cause confusion among Muslims. It was these ‘converts’ under the leadership of one Abdullah bn Saba that succeeded in sponsoring the rebellion against the third Caliph, Othman. They first articulated his shortcomings, amplified and disseminated them around the Caliphate. Thereafter they called for his resignation; when he refused to resign they killed him. The Muslim Ummah chose Ali, a cousin of the Holy Prophet to lead them after Othman, but these very people, who now called themselves Shiat Ali (the sect of Ali) frustrated his efforts to track and punish the killers of Othman. They now made Shia a symbol of love for Ali and other relations of the prophet and hatred for the other caliphs and the rest of the prophet’s companions whom they claimed betrayed the trust of the prophet.
Something is fundamentally wrong with some followers of Islam. What ever misunderstanding these 'converts' had should have been settled and buried long ago. What does this sect really want? It's own Caliphate? Then they should make their grievance known to the UN and not taking it out on innocence people.

With this sort of movement, and other dreaded movements across the globe bearing Islam, am always inclined to ask: Is Islam really a religion of peace? Until Islam as a religion rises against these movements in entirety and show to the world that these movements are not Islam, it's only then I would accept Islam as a religion of Peace.
Christianity EtcRe: Church Sends Man Letter For Refusing To Pay Dues by Koolking(m): 11:54am On Dec 16, 2015
Churches are not paying taxes to government upon the billions they generate as turnover (profit) yet they intimidate and coerce members to pay tax.

Taxes in church should be voluntary while the wealthy members (including the stakeholders) are encouraged to contribute for the expansion of evangelism and care of the poor members, instead of funding the already luxurious lifestyles of founders (who are supposed to be part time workers). Religion, noticeably Christianity is highly commercialize - Nigeria is a case study - hence the proliferation of churches and attendant avoidable confusions here and there.

Your understanding of Christ Jesus will help you break free from the hoodwinks and manipulations of these so called men-of-god. When you are compelled to give, it add no value to you.

Thank you Jesus for your Grace
