Flexible/stranded cable, stranded cable and solid cable are different types of cables.

4mm flex cable and 4mm stranded cable are not the same thing even though both are stranded. The size and number of strands differeciates them.

The flex has very high number of strands making the strands very tiny. This gives the cable flexibility.
My question to you guys, which of the cables is better for AC load. What capacity of AC are we really talking about. 1hp, 2, of 3hp or in another way 10,000BTU or 12k, 14k or 25,000BTU

I walked into the local government area, town planning section. They told me to leave and they will come and have a look at the street. The check was to ensure it had not been allocated before to a different person. Then they called me to confirm I can come and pay N85k for the approval. I waited a week before they agreed their Oga had signed for me to make the naming authentic. I paid another 8k or so to enable them buy paints and work on the welded name plate. They painted it themselves and wrote "approved by xyz local government"

They gave me a laminated signed certificate to keep. They also used their hand to write the street name on about 6 houses ,on walls and gates. They gave numbers, number 1 to number 6. And that is how I came to live at number 1 Akwusi anuba ogu street grin (translation of my street name means, stop in this street and we give you a beating) grin

Oh, and another 5k for their transportation back to office.
@spyder880, these most be a jake abi. I mean the name of your Street. Street names processing in Lagos State is not a joke, especially charging name. it's little easier in newly opened up areas.

some manufacturers are now very very careful who they engage as distributors because the scam is simple - get registered as a distributor, get the letter for the customers, then run off to chin to make fakes that would be sold at market price.ABB suffered this big time.

its a fking jungle and you can trust almost no one. double check , triple check

8 years ago i was at lg main warehouse in apapa to buy a home theatre. they gave me the box. i was ready to leave, then i stopped and said they should open it, and lo and behold, it was a used home theatre inside the box. if i had left the shop it would have been another story. and you never can tell just how far these scams go. is it some workers; are the workers doing what their ogas have been doing and so on and so forth.
Everyone of us will keep complaining, when authorities are effectively enforcing the laws The same people will turn it to became political. How long can we continue these way. An average Nigerian will go any part of the world obey their laws, when they return home right from the airport they will start jumping line. Imagine that. I was listening to TVC news calling in program two days ago, when someone called in complaing about Lagos state government moving bus terminal from Jibowu to Ojota where I believe they have more space. How can a country develop if may of it citizens are narrow thinker, that only care about how he or she get rich anyhow overnight.

Good day everyone, please I need help. I'm seriously questioning the quotation given to me by my engineer. He was the one that got the building to this stage. I asked for roofing wood work quotation (without roofing sheets yet), I was given a bill of over 700k with labour inclusive at 350k.

Please the experts should help me scrutinise this. I think it's outrageous especially the labour cost.

What do you think is the appropriate bill for this project?

I will appreciate as many responses as possible. Thanks
Material in my opinion is fear, labor should not be more than 120k max for wooden work. Remember his still going to change for the roofing sheet, don't forget gutter water way inclusive in the negotiation if it's in your design. Otherwise that may be another contract.

I get his point even though i dont think he meant somethings he said literally. Somethings like using hands and not using brains. Even a mad man uses his brain. I also know that those who use hands and still use their brains are National Diploma graduates not HND. Le[s not throw the bath water with the baby, he made good points.

You sound like a poly gratuate with a kind of inferiority complex. You think his comments are demeaning to poly graduates and in your defence you claim "uni graduates are just graduates on paper." Its not your place to criticize their training. Many times we see graduates not do well, but do we ask, are they trained for that? I hsve done project management stuff but am i a trained project manager?

I get his point and its exactly what it is. You sound like you dont know the difference between an engineer, an engineering technologist and an engineering technician. A poly is not a uni and a uni is not a poly. For example, i know for a fact that the labouratory of Civil engineering in a poly is bigger and more equipped than that of the uni, its not strange to me. I hope you can find for yourself what the difference is instead of trying to be an engineer while the engineer also tries to be technician or technologist.

Its like a husband and wife thing. They both have one aim but separate duties. That the husband is the head of the family doesnot demean the responsibility of the wife. She is equally important. We also find wifes taking responsibilities of the head so its not strange neither should you find strange an engineer doing technological work or a technologist doing engineering or technical work.

I hope you do know the difference between a technologist and technician.

Many Nigerian graduates donot know the limits to their professional qualifications, I lost a job opportunity beacause i was asked which field i work best, i didnt want to choose an unavailable area so i asked for any one within my discipline. I was wrong to have done that and the man scolded me for that. That happened because i just wanted a good job not a profession. We have all lost that in Nigeria.

Go through the list of engineers, technicians and technologist of COREN, you will see that Nigerian technologist and technician are not proud of their profession instead they all want to get a masters and register as an engineer. The ones that do register are those who are compelled by their working places.

Be proud of who you are and also know exactly where you are supposed to fit in the engineering field. You are not more than the engineer and like wise.
Thank you, your advice came little to late though. I discovered myself in engineering field I work over 26 years till now. I love it, very proud of it too.

Great best analysis so far, simple, detailed without sentiment. But this day build industry you don't stay within your limits or else you may be redundant. Conceiver or designer should also try and have practical skills, while the Engineering technologist can as well learn to be a conceiver. As a structural Engineer, my experience in construction, helps me a lot in design as I can easily identify a design that is not practicable. One thing I know is that most of us find our selves in either University or Polytechnic just in a bid to go to a higher institution without knowing what we actually wanted. Some guys are in polytechnic with ability to be in University and a even a better design engineer. In my University days, the guys that migrated from Polytechnic performed excellently well all of them graduated with good grades and even in the professional field they are excelling, all because they discovered themselves while they were in Poly that they were meant to be in University and they did everything possible to be in Uni.
Thank you for nailing it up. It's all well sha, we all need each other to accomplish final results.

Let us not go into this University Vs. Poly Graduates thing again.

Each one of them have their areas of core competence but are meant to be compementary toone another, to get a finished product.

University graduates are NEVER trained to be hands-on (as in technical DIY, under-the bonnet stuffs) for jobs.
They are trained to use their BRAINS, Not their HANDS!
A University graudate is practically a "Designer" of projects (be it Engineering, Medcine, Architecture, Computer Software, et.c).
Their brains have been developed to CONCEPTUALISE POSSIBILITIES, where non exists and to put such CONCEPTS on paper.

This is where it ends! grin
So, dont be surprised that a University trained mechanical Engineer cant get under the bonnet and repair his own car!
He is just not trained to do such and it is not necessary on his part, anyway. There is someone else (Poly grad) trained to do such.

But ask him to DESIGN a non-existing vehicle to certain specs, he will go to those Engineering Software, use his knowledge and come out with a prototype that WILL WORK!
Again, that is where it ends.

The Poly Graduate on the other hand, is trained to USE HIS HANDS, they are very hands-on and are trained to COMPLEMENT, by picking up where the University Graduate left the job.
The are the ones that really bring concepts designed by a Uni-graudate, TO LIFE.
Just give him any design and he would use welding machines, nuts and bolts and put it together.
If it is faulty, he would repair it.
That is their advantage and area of competence.

But without mincing words, you will notice straight away that their conversational English is almost zero, too much poor English (but they dont really need it and dont do much of English in school, unlike the Uni-gradaute.
What they need (an dhave in large quantity), is their hands-on experience, which a Uni-gradaute does not have

They are not "thinkers and brain workers" who develop ideas from scratch,, unlike the University crowds.
They mostly cant put what they know (ideas) across in a way that catches attention (I have interviewd a few and l know this) even when they have it in their mind!
But just give then something to work on (brain work) and you will see tha they are geniuses!
That is why you will find a lot of them in 'practical' jobs like Construction, Surveying,Manufacturing, Elelctrical, e.t.c

Let me stop here and summarise:
Both Graduates (Uni and Poly), are developed to COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER, one is not better than the other but each is a proffessional and have its area of core-competence.

The problem we expereince is that the Nigerian environment has been so bastardised such that only "conceptualisers" (brain workers) are in much demand, simply because we are not a manufacturing/producing nation.

The hands-on people dont have much to do right now and that is reflective in our poor level of development, low level of production, e.tc even when Nigerians are in many top "brain positions" all over the world.

I hope this settles it once and for all.
I'm very disappointed in your analysis in tarnishing a Polytechnic Graduate in this disrespectful manner by stating "they only use their hands" instead of their brains. In the first place, both university graduates and their counterparts in this part of the world are both competence in designing, develop and implement new concepts. In Nigeria of today, how many university graduates have came up with any new innovative ideas that translates to new products? As you can see many of our University graduates of today are more just graduates on papers that has no value added to the degree at hand. This leads me to conclude if we do not rejuvenate our education system and eradicate this mentality that "Polytechnic graduates are trained to used their hands not their brain". We will continue to produce secondary school graduates parading themselves as university graduates that are unemployable. You will agree with me that our future is at stake.

Well let me just put a full stop here.I dont know why I am arguing with you,I should know better .About the polytechnic issue let me, make it clear.About 70% of quantity surveyors that I have met went to polytechnics. One of the biggest QS firms in Nigeria, tillyard consultants 75% of its QS's have HND CERTIFICATES FROM POLYTECHNICS.

I know you might dispute this, but if you want to want to learn hands on practicals, POLY would be your best choice. Am telling you this because as POLTECHNIC graduate, I can work as a bricklayer, plumber and carpenter, because I have acquired, practical skills in school.Tell me how many university graduates of civil engineering can lay or even mould blocks, lay pipes for plumbing or even put together timber flush door am sure 80% wouldn't know how to.
Today I am a plumbing and water contractor because of the practical skills and hands on training from a Polytechnic.Graduates of polys might not get 5.0 CGPA but they know their ornions.
You're absolutely right. The PLOLYTECNIC GRADUATES are better in practical hand on skills right form technical school to polytechnic. This is one of the biggest problem we have in our education system today. Many university graduate that are unemployable, because they like skill to be productive. Let be honest with our self.

How To Calculate The Amount Of Paint Needed For Your Room
Calculating the amount of paint needed depends largely on the surface area of the wall in the room.

Measure out the perimeter of the room i.e the entire length of the four sides of the room or as the case may be.

Then measure out the height of the room, the length from floor to the ceilling. These could be in meters or in feet depends on what you are used to.

Now calculate the surface area of the room which is simply by multiplying the total length of the room by the ceilling heigth.
For a standard Nigerian room, it is usually 3.6m x3.6m or 12ft x12ft others can also make theirs 3.6m x3.0m or 12ft x 10ft depends on the plan of the house.

After this measure out the openings in the room, most often the windows and doors.

For windows it may be 1.2m x 1.2m i.e 4ft x 4ft or 1.8m x 1.2m i.e 6ft x 4ft, the height of windows are mostly 1.2m or 4ft while the length is what usually varies. Multiply the height by the length of all the windows and then do same for doors.

For doors the height is usually 2.1m or 7ft and the length is 0.9m or900mm or 3ft do multiply the height by the length and sum the total areas of openings in the room then subtact from the total surface area of the room.

After determining your area (square feet or m2) then choose your paint

check the label of the paint bucket for the spread rate for the paint.Spread rate is just the number of square feet (m2)of surface each coat of paint will cover .After finding out, divide the total surface area you measured earlier by this number to determine the number of paint bucket/liter you will need for each coat.

The number of coats you should apply depends on the type of paint, the colour, the nature of the colour you are applying, method of application and the nature of the surface.

For example, you will likely need a second coat of paint when covering a dark color with a lighter one. Also, certain surfaces, like exterior masonry, are very porous and absorb a great deal of paint. In such cases, a second coat is often needed to give the paint a uniform appearance.
@Segun, thank God people like you are coming back to keep this thread alive for the purpose of what is meant for. I'm also using these opportunities to imploring to many other professionals in the house to do same, many more may be encourage to start something in their little way with probably little resources available to them. In short possible time, they may soon have roof on their heads. Journey of 10 years starts with a step, the step you decide to take today. I can assure you, it's will determine your tomorrow.

Guys,

I need some advise; I have property where there has recently been an electricity surge and the pumping machine for the borehole was damaged. Hence I have been told that we need to re-cool it. I have been given the following quote:

Recoiling of the machine
18,000
Control box 6,000
Cable 18,000
Labour 10,000
Total. 52,000.

Also I was told I needed to install a timer switch next for the borehole so that we would have another incident where the borehole was left on and a power surge cause damage.

Borehole Timer costed at 25,000

Then, we have to earthen the property as it was reported that the taps seems to have some current in them.

1. Industrial salt he said he needed 2 pack which is 10,000. Should we manage 1 which is 5,000. As required the two is 10,000
2. Two earth rod 20,000.
3. 1/2 coil of 16mm coper wire 25,000
4. Bore hole complete timer. 25,000
5. Workmanship 20,000
Total = 100,000

Is this quote reasonable

Na waa for you "People-Deceiving-People" (PDP) folks o!
This hypocrisy stinks to high heavens and to think that most of you lost your voice in the last six years before Buhari came to office?
shocked shocked

As far as you are concerned, Buhari is responsible for all the woes of this country!
That is most unfair.

This is where "Me and You" defer.

Okay, l agree with you: We have a lot of problems and we should not "hide them and pretend all is well".
And l also agree that you were responding to another post.

But you should also agree that using Buhari's health situation to buttress your point was not very good.
All the Problems of Nigeria that you highlighted are true and you will also agree with me that THEY ARE CAUSED BY CORRUPTION.

If we both agree with the above, then we should also agree that though Buhari is not a "saint" but he is by far the only Nigerian leader that has shown "any attempt" to even tackle corruption:
1.) from insisting that all Ministries" and Govt Agencies should stop the usual "finish the budget allocation on Dec 31, irrespective of what you do with it"...instead, Buhari instituted the Single Treasury Account, whereby though the money is budgeted but if not spent, it must be returned to the treasury!
It also ensures that ALL INCOMES and EXPENDITURES of the Govt goes to/through a Single Govt Account. You can only imagine the effect of this when you realise that some Govt Agencies have up to 48 HIDDEN BANK ACCOUNTS! Where only the D.G, head of Finance and maybe another caucus members knows about.

2.) It is only Buhari that has boldly challenged Corruption, even refusing the New vehicles he was given and saying "Since the old ones used by Jonathan are still working, he would continue to use them".
he also sold-off some of the fleets of Aircrafts acquired by previous Govt, reducing the number to 4, from around fifteen!

3.) He is the only one who made "Corrupt Judges", as powerful and almighty as they are, to know that they are not completely untouchable

4.) He was the only one who could touch "the high and mighty thieves" in our system though the EFCC needs to be more pro-active, less noisy and use "scientific evidence/methods" to mail criminals.

I can go on and on but my Wife has just issued a fatwa on me, to come to bed right now! grin grin

It is for these reasons that "they got to him" very quickly and he has to be hospitalised.
Just think about the number of criminals that would shout hallelujah, if Buhari were to die today! undecided

Now, he did all these, took all the "bullets" for the sake of our country.
How does it now feel that it is the "same we" that will ridicule him everywhere by passing such snide remarks, about his health?
Do you think Buahri loves being in the U.K while his tenor, which he has fought for, and lost three times in the past, is wasted or used on his behalf, by another person (though his assistant)?
Dont you know that Buhari will love nothing more than to leave a lasting legacy (like J. J. Rawlings) in Nigeria, now that he is nearing his end, as a result of old age?

Do you not think that Buahri will rather be in his "other room" with Aisha, than be in a cold London hospital?

Buhari has always been a healthy man with spartan lifestyle so, for him to have undergone a few blood transfusion is an indication that he was "reborn" and his system was completely destroyed.

What the man needs is our prayers, even when we see to our chagrin that the Evil doers have kind of succeeded.
A lot of things are happening today that we all felt disappointed ..in the CHANGE we voted for but we all know that if Buhari was to be "sound and healthy", majority of these things would never happen. Who born Monkey?

In summary Sir, l am sorry if l offended you, l am also not a politician though l take absolute interest in the success of my country and her well-being.
Just imagine, that we had to dig-deep to a retired, 73yr old man, (after searching everywhere and found none that could effect the desired change) to come to our rescue!
What does that say about the level of decadence amongst our younger ones?
Kidnapping and looting everywhere!

Buhari that took office in 2015 is no longer the same person we see now, he has been weakened but is it Saraki that we want to use as replacement? God forbid!
Even a weakened Buhari (playing at the background, with Prof. Osinbajo doing the heavy lifting for him and on his behalf) is still preferable to all the thieves l see around, circling like vultures, waiting to pounce.

Let us not face each other, our common enemies are in the Senate, the Governors, Ministers, public servants who take bribe, Police, e.t.c.
I will reserve my anger for those ones.

Between me and YOU, its a good, firm handshake.
Firm handshake indeed, this is how two mature men resolved issue of mutual interest. Abeg go face your wife fatwa jare.

Succinctly put and spot on, Nigeria is a jungle, l once suggested that it should be auctioned on eBay and sold either to the highest bidder, Western Europe, Oceania or the Americas, I still stand by my opinion anyday without apologies, I was in Nigeria recently and visited few places, apart from useless cosmetic display by the wicked politicians to score cheap political points, nothing is moving in that country, the masses are suffering terribly, tell me one single thing Nigerians are enjoying at the moment, it is the same bulshit promises in every election, my friends who also visited at the same time with me are scared of going out to avoid been kidnapped or robbed, yes, I agree that other countries have challenges but Nigeria is the current place called Hell on planet earth, I don't believe in the adage that says no place like home, home to me is where my wellbeing, peace, security and the ability to become whatever l want legitimately without knowing anybody is guaranteed , it is better to be a first, second, third or fourth class citizen in the West than to be a Nigerian, I know the several embarrassment I faced at various airport while traveling with the useless tissue paper called Nigerian passport before I got my citizenship, I have been to smaller African countries that even with the little resources they have their citizens are still better off than the so called giant of Africa, giant of Africa my foot wink
Congratulation for adopting your new country citizenship. If you look at that your passport carefully it's will still say Nigeria attached to you for ever. I believe you don't have control on that, it may start from you to make it better. Our attitude home and abroad make a living hell of what it ways today. Don't ask my why good luck sir.

We are driving at the same point sir
The country need to first be fixed before we can start talking good about it
U don't expect me to talk good of a conutry that has failed in all aspect...that is my point
Patroitism is driven by stiff enforcement in most developed countries
Mind u i am not supporting any administration
We have been living in a failed state ever since IBB regime, not that it was good prior to IBB regme, but i think it was better
Thank you, for stating the fact. I'm not supporting any party or any administrations either but good governance.
