WorldAmbassador: @EgunMogaji. I agree. I looked at the map of United States of America. Some states Like Texas as big as our country Nigeria..imagine that. We just don't invest our resources in flood control. Besides, we don't have winter storms, volcanoes, and earthquakes like most of these Western countries do. Yes we do sir, all the money that suppose to be used are in the pocket of those political looters. May be you should be asking where are the ecological funds that been giving to your governors over the years. We seems to forget things fast, remember former Plateau state governor that was facing prosecution of looting those funds, that is just one of them. The case is still in court if I'm right since 2007 with know conclusion till date. The same guy today is one of the senators writing laws for Nigerians imagine that. That is just one example of the damage these so called leaders as done to that country. I'm a strong believer that things can get better in no time, if only we citizens get our perority rights as to whom we voted in to represent ours interests as people. |

johnson232: I really don't understand this your comment Seems it has been long u visited this country U think anyone would want to tarnish his own? This your countires not talking about their woes is wrong If we are talking about a problem & the government isn't addressing it, is it when we keep mute about it government will address it? Just tell me what is good about this country to cover up for the bad ones? U dare compare nigerians meaningless killings by boko haram to USA killngs? Yet all of u run to USA? How many US citizens do u see fighting for visa to come to nigeria? A conutry whose president reside in another country & whose children are graduates of foreign institutions...can anything be more shameful than that? There is nothing good to talk about nigeria, from our health system to education to roads is nothing but total failure. The only thing to talk about is the competence of our politicians when it comes to corruption.
Pls if u wanna compare any situation with nigeria, don't use countries like USA, use our neighbours like ghana & senegal...Nigeria can never be like USA in any aspect if we continue with this level of corruption...& i don't see us changing anytime soon... Just busy now, I respect your opinion though. One thing is clear to me, Nigerians citizens are enemy of themselves. CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION, we know that was our problem. When people of integrity take steps to correct wrongs. Wasn't the same people calling it witch hunting and political prosecution. When people were sharing our common wealth then, no one saw anything wrong then. All these issues you raise, do they just happen over night. Are you telling me the hospitals, schools, roads, light, were all good within the last 18 years. More especially in the last 10 years when oil was sold at over $100 per barrel. Everybody thought our economy was booming on the context of deceive in the name of foreign investments. You also raise the issue of students graduating from foreign institutions, that is the result you get if people practicing and voting for rice, money, ethnicity instead of quality people with discipline, morals and integrity. Mind you if all this hate and divide by rule by so called politicians that you guys voting for ethnicity line, nothing will change anytime soon. Not until we put our difference aside and be patriotic citizens that have interest of that country at heart and bring value that will make meaningful changes. Instead of going their with a mindset of looting. I remember when they thought the economy was booming and people come here, even low earners with government jobs. Some of them come here and spend $3,000-4,000 a day. Some of these people today cannot even afford to charge their phones for whatsapp and they make us look stupid, as if we don't know what we are doing out here. |

abbeyboy2o15: We witness it here too what is the cause i dont understand. Is nice to short those people that never have anything good to say about their Country, may be many of them can not see beyond their noises. Because of the way many countries branded theirs. Flooding is not peculiar to lekki or Nigeria alone. Everyday people write shit about their place of birth, do you guys even know how many people been killed in USA every hour? In Chicago alone, I believe the killed more people then in a week then what boko haram kill in a month, when they are not even in war. That was only Chicago alone. How many of those do anyone of their citizens or big media house report. Talk of the entire USA, where guns are sold like candy in most places. Pls enough of this negativity about that country, I'm not saying everything is ok oh, but every county as it own internal crisis many people may not know, and will never know. Many of those countries will continue to brand their countries as the best, I can name few like Brazil and others. |

They are there today and I asked the foreman why they haven't been coming to work (I work form home so I hear their noise all day when they are there). He said they were waiting for the City Inspector to come and do site inspection and they couldn't continue until he signs off.
In Nigeria we don't have that, so people will just use anything to build because no one will check. Yes we do, people just not doing what they are supposed to do. Even when they show up is not oblige to their duty, but to extort money from owners. Failure of institution functioning. |

oyb: hmmm. the real question is what corners were cut while wiring that house 1) if there is overload on the cable, the breaker should trip first 2) in all honesty, a water pump is max 2hp 1500w . a 13amp socket should carry that easily.
of course everything i've posted assumes the house was wired in a competent and honest manner.
unfortunately, i have seen that even artisans who i have seen to be competent will cut corners if they feel they can get away with it.
and the proliferation of fake /substandard materials . . .
there was one instance where for three months straight we kept getting fire alarms in a site server room. we could not figure out the problem. then one day we took the server room raised floor apart and we found that an ac supply cable had been joined. the joint was the source of all the smoke triggering the fire alarms.

Done by same carpenters that do interior decor and kitchen cabinets.
Older designs used to be popular with court houses, legislative chambers and the alters of some pentecostal churches and some hotels back in the day (they called it mansonia panelling) so its not new. Only the designs were modenised Oh I thought you're talking of wooden for courtyard floor instead of stamp concrete, of course interior wooden floor decorative are always better if one can afford it. bixton: There's a saying which goes by "sew your cloth according to your size". Concrete stamping serves the same purpose as interlocking stones stones it certainly will have varying cost since the processes differs. Apart from applying the chemical which gives it a befitting look and the mat cutting it into desired shape/design floor concrete stamping bears no difference from doing your usual concrete floor just the same way you do floors for exterior purposes. The cost is usually between #1600-#2500/sqm and it's working patterns varies from one artisan/engineer to another.

44chux: I used to laugh at EgunMogaji when he didn't import all the stuff he said he would, but given what I know now, his new approach is the best. After this my first and only build, I have decided to go back to buying completed houses provided they were built by reputable companies or their Cooperative societies.
I made a lot of regrettable mistakes like:
Trying to renovate rather than build afresh cause Qs said it was way cheaper.
Demolishing part of the structure cause a reputable NL Builder said structure would fail simply cause 6" blocks were used which limited the size of the columns and that the footings were 2.75x2.75 instead of the minimum standard of 3x3 without factoring that the reason was because the avg span of columns was 2meters and max span about 3m in one or two places.
Using 4mm cable for sockets and 2.5mm for lighting and 35mm amoured for supply resulting in cost of 3.3mil for a 4bed duplex plus now I have to crack walls to add new piping for any amendment as no extra wire can pass through the conduits.
Going by Brabus advice to cast 4feet below ground around entire fence to keep water from a nearby man made pit from getting to the house foundation. It didn't stop the water but filling the pit did.
Using stone dust for block and interlock moulding.
Using Spanish tiles which turned out to be very slippery while the Nigerian look alike was not slippery at all.
Not bonding my lightening arrestor with my house earthing system which costed me millions in damages.
Oversizing of overhead water tanks which meant it took 5days of max water usage to empty tanks and did encourage coliform bacteria growth
Not supervising the work myself and having engineers and supervisors build what suited them. Plus they carelessly broke a large screen tv
Installing my main gate during construction which meant much repairs and modifications during landscaping and interlocking
And the list goes on. Men I feel your pain, all this your regrettable mistakes is what makes all us here became builders over night. Please don't think you are the only one oh, if I opened book on my experience in this house building business from buying lands, documentation, omo oni iles scammers, even government inadequate information that give scammers opportunity on procedures. Materials supplier artisans, with some of those know nothing parading them self's as engineers. My brother it will be a best selling book. Puck nosing in every aspect of low end homes is still the best option, if one put his trust on some of these guys. abdulwastecx: You can't just blame the people but rather the system, the system is skewed in such a way that politics is very lucrative, you will expect people to view it as a way to make megabuck.
The major problem is with the 1999 constitution, which was written by some selective few corrupt military junta from a section of the country without consultations with others, they put in place a constitution that is only beneficiary to the few elites. We need to seriously restructured, let each region, geo political zones or states generate their revenue, no freeoney fr any centralized government. This will reduce the do or due mentality of most of the people vying for political office at the central. My young brother I may only agree with you for some few point, like the 1999 constitution. Restructuring, agitating, or even resources control either is not the solution, but revolution is the best of all the options we have. All the thiefs cut a cross every region of the country, you can see why is not the best solution in my opinion. I strongly believe together we're better. All we need is to ensure all those politicians clean out completely, I can assure you Nigerian will be a better place in a very short time. |

spyder880: I agree in totality, from 1985 till 1999, Nigeria was one hell of a confused country, the military leaders made sure they kept running from pillar to post, mouthing one popular mantra after another, shifting goalposts, stealing the country blind and sending the loot overseas. In fact, the looting in the military era surpasses all you see today. Can you even ask them question like we do to politicians today? There was no accountability, no direction, no good policies and the leaders were so unqualified for leadership that you will be shocked.
The problem of Nigeria today is as a result of the stunted growth we witnessed in those military years where we had to suspend the constitution and made decrees which today is still looking to people like its the way. Our democratic values were thrown away and replaced by brute force, flogging, frog jumps and other forms of punishment subjugated the masses and we are still feeling the trauma till date. Human rights was thrown into the dustbin. Those military leaders are still around as our leaders, in the state government, federal legislature and federal government, those military men are still around, and I think that's where our problems are. People who seized power and later retired into civilian lives did not acquire any form of training for democratic values, they see everything as force, and that's why they have no diplomacy, no negotiation skills and certainly, no regards for the poor masses.
The hangover of the economic blunders committed during the military years may take us another 30 years to clear. Then, it was only the head of state making economic policies with a "selected few" who might be incompetent. I cannot forget the attachment to IMF suggestions, the mindless borrowings to eat, the neglect of the manufacturing sector, or the power sector, the lack of foresight to plan for the millions of young people who have gone into higher education, the deliberate attempt to kill industries, which led to brain drain. Men just stood up and ran away to other countries because Nigeria could not care about us.
Let me tell you about my most visible comparison about the two types of government, I started a media campaign for the past 5 years for the construction of my community road, after several writings and topics, I am sure the information got to the right quarter, and today, my community is getting a brand new road done as we speak. Can I try this in a military regime?
See as I dey write like a civil servant, abeg let me disappear to my site jare Well with all these blames, why did it have to take 5 years to campaign just to fix roads in your community? You know what, YOU PEOPLE ARE THE PROBLEM. Politicians are nobody if people did not vote them into power. AS FAR AS PEOPLE ARE STILL VOTING IN ETHNIC TRIBAL LINES INSTEAD OF VOTING QUALITY PEOPLE WITH DISCIPLINE AND MORALS, nothing will change in that country. Today Nigerian politicians are investors that take loans to get their-self into power and they expect the highest return of their investment. As you can see, that is the drama that keeps playing out everyday in Nigerian politics. Imagine recently, people just voted in another dancing senator to represent them. Instead of people to do their research about that individual's moral character and ask questions on what he will bring to the people rather they use ethnicity division to achieve their goals. With time the result will be seen by everyone. This is the order of the day in our beloved country. In my opinion a revolution is the the only solution to all this rubbish. Good Morning Nigerians, have a blessed day! |

I was at the old Odutola Tire factory in Ibadan in May this year and it was a saddening sight to behold.

spyder880: Thanks for the invite Sir.
I have used a lot of tiles from almost all the countries tiles can be imported into Nigeria.
Spanish tiles
These are tiles which are brought in from Spain and are of a noticeably higher quality than some other ones. There seems to me to be a better attempt at the smoothness of the edges, the conscious efforts to glamorize the products coming from that source. I think a lot of Spanish tiles are good to look at, has a good feel and are well packaged to attract the users. Spanish tiles are usually higher priced than some other tiles, except Italian tiles. There are a lot of tiles which comes in from Spain, which seem to be produced for the super rich alone, how can you explain some tiles I have seen, which sell for as much as N40,000 for a single square meter, (it's not a typo )
Italian tiles
These share most of the characteristics of Spanish tiles, except that I cannot seem to understand the appeal of Italian tiles due to the lack of beautiful colors or designs. Italian tiles are usually a little more expensive than the Spanish tiles. But they are also rugged and will last for a long time before fading due to traffic.
Chinese tiles
Chinese manufacturers started aiming at this country when they found out the crazy demand for tiles here, their tiles are mostly mid range products and are good to use. Many Chinese tiles are cheaper than the Spanish or Italians, there is also the talk that some Chinese imported tiles are of a lower quality than even Nigerian made tiles. I also noticed the copy cat nature of our importers who will pick a design from Spain and move to China to produce same tiles and bring them in, and you can hardly spot the difference.
Nigerian tiles
As a result of the demand, some manufacturers brought in the equipment and knowhow and started making tiles here in Nigeria, before, it was of a lower quality and very light when lifted. The attraction seemed to be the cost, as Nigerian tiles were dirt cheap, compared to its foreign counterparts, but as time moved on, Nigerian tiles makers upped the ante, and now you can hardly differentiate the difference between Nigerian made tiles and the foreign ones. Nigerian tiles are now attracting better attention from users owing to the massive rise in the cost of the foreign tiles, because of the hike in foreign currency exchange rates. We are also copying the foreign designs. The Wood grain designs or the other popular styles are now available with the Nigerian made tiles.
Finally, tiles should be chosen based on the way it appeals to the owner of the house, because we are all different beings. There are people that buy stuff because it's costly, or because it's cheap. There are people who consider the beauty of the designs, while others consider the durability. But one thing is clear, a Nigerian tile can do the same job an expensive foreign tile did. And most people may never notice the difference. God bless you my brother your last sentence cover it all. If we sit here and start tarnishing our own made products. How do we encourage younger populous to even think of being creative and productive in our society. We need to embrace our product, I believe it was the same technology that was used to produce tiles all around the world. A perfect example is the Nigerian cable industries, despite all the tribulations over the years, they never compromise on the quality of their product and it has been like that for at least 30 years. In the first place, if we can patronize our product. Please tell me, how do we create employment for these time bombing youths roaming around. There are many other nice products that are being locally produced everyday in that country. Our sentiment is most of the reason why we are losing our best brains on the daily basis. This narrative has to change. In order to make meaningful development. Many developed countries around the world, keep their best brains home in their country, developing ideas that will move their country forward. In our own case it is the complete opposite. We need to be proud of whom we are, be proud that at least we are making things and need to improve in it. |
