PoliticsBukola Saraki: Pdp Govs Support Yaradua For 2nd Term by Lagosboy(op): 12:42pm On Apr 09, 2009
big boost has come for President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s second term as it has emerged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors have thrown their weight behind the alleged bid.
Chairman of the Governors Forum and Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki confirmed the PDP governors’ support for the President’s second term in an interview with THISDAY on Tuesday night in Abuja.
Saraki also denied that he was nursing a plan to contest the 2011 presidential election.
The revelation on the PDP governors’ support emerged just as the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Muhammed Abba Aji, said categorically yesterday that Yar’Adua would run for a second term.
It has also emerged that President Yar’Adua has informed the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) of his plan to seek a second term in office.
THISDAY learnt that Yar’Adua told the board that his plan was to use two years to properly study the situation on ground in the country and use six years to implement his programmes.
The Kwara State governor told THISDAY that Yar’Adua has the constitutional powers to go for a second term and PDP governors are supporting him in the move.
He said the governors support derive from the fact that the President had demonstrated that he has the vision, sincerity and determination to put the country in the right direction.
“He is honest we believe in him, he is focused and reliable,” he said.
The governor denied the allegation that he was positioning himself for Presidency since his term as governor ends in two years time.
He said those not comfortable with his relationship with the President must have felt they could distort it by carrying out such a ‘wicked rumour’ about his alleged presidential ambition.
Saraki said he was not surprised at the rumour since, according to him, there is a lot of mischief in politics, pointing out that some would even go as far as printing posters of him running for the presidency.
“Am preoccupied with the Kwara challenge,” he said.
On whether the support of the PDP governors for Yar’Adua reflects the views and feelings of their people across the country, the governor responded in the affirmative, saying Yar’Adua has done well in trying to put the country on the right path to greatness.
He said whatever feeling the citizen may have of the President must be due to the fact that his style was different from that of the previous administration, adding that “what is important is that he is focused”.
Very soon the country would begin to feel the impact of the Yar’Adua government, he said.
Saraki also said that contrary to reports that the North is opposed to Yar’ Adua’s second term, the support for him in the geo-political zone is total.
“I can assure you that the political leadership in the north is solidly behind Yar’Adua. We believe he is focused, he is sincere, he is honest, he is committed in moving Nigeria forward,” he said.
He dismissed the talk of the President’s alleged ill-health as a possible barrier to Yar’Adua’s ambition, pointing out that the report on the President’s health was in the realm of speculation derived largely from his style of not allowing himself to be involved in the noise of politics.
“The President feels that he has a job and would not want to exert the energy that should be channeled to the work to attend to the noise of second term,” he said.
The governor defended Yar’Adua’s approach to fighting corruption, saying the President was battling corruption not through making noise on the pages of newspapers.
He said if Nigerians must appreciate Yar’Adua’s crusade against corruption they must separate the question of style from the issue.
The governor also explained why the Governors backed the government’s deregulation policy, saying it was not a show of insensitivity but a determined move to save the sector from the hands of very few Nigerians who have been exploiting the people.
According to him, over $638billion spent on subsidising fuel yearly goes into the hands of very few people.
“This is twice the capital of the country, we can’t just be enriching 10 to 20 Nigerians in the name of subsidy,” he said.
The Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters has told THISDAY in Abuja that a second term in office for the President is a foregone conclusion.
He said: “I can give you a categorical position on this and you can quote me anywhere: Mr. President is going for second term. There is no doubt about this.
“The constitution allows it and our founding fathers have provided two terms for the president in the constitution because the problems of this country are enormous and you cannot achieve all the things set out within four years.
“Four years is usually enough for you to determine the problems, to lay the plans, the structure and the strategy for the achievement, which includes financial planning, that is budgeting, but for implementation to be concluded and for effects to begin to be realized, of course, you need a second term, which is why the founding fathers provided two terms.
“So, yes, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua is going for a second term. There is no doubt about this. Anybody who thinks that the president is not going for a second term is not thinking the truth simply.”
Meanwhile, former House of Representatives Speaker Ghali Umar Na’Abba has denied that he is part of any clandestine meeting aimed at stopping Yar’Adua from getting re-elected in 2011.
Na’Abba said he would in due course make public his position on the alleged second term bid of the President.
In THISDAY’s report of last Monday, Na’Abba was named among those meeting to plot against Yar’Adua’ second term.
But he said last night that if there was anything he would do or planned to do against Yar’Adua’s re-election bid, it would not be in collaboration with the politicians listed along with him in the story.
According to him, such caliber of politicians “are not principled in any way and I have never been part of them”.
Na’Abba stated further: “These people have never invited me to any of their meetings and I never discussed Yar’Adua with any of them in my life. And if I want to participate in any organisation that will accomplish what these people want to achieve, I will be bold enough to stand by it. My stand on Yar’Adua was stated a few months ago in the interview I granted THISDAY.”
In that interview, Na’Abba had criticised Yar’Adua for being too sluggish for a country like Nigeria that should be in hurry to catch up with other nations that have made progress.
The issue of second term for Yar’Adua had left the rumour mill to the front burner last month when the former BoT Chairman, Chief Anthony Anenih, prayed at a public function attended by both Yar’Adua and Atiku that God should grant the President good health to enable him complete his remaining two years and his second term.
Later Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Adamu Aliero said categorically that President Yar’Adua would run for a second term.
Reports of plan by some northern group to frustrate this move have also been debunked by some Yar’Adua loyalists including Aliero and Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido who said any such move would fail.
The PDP leadership has also endorsed Yar’Adua for second term saying his seven-point agenda was designed for eight years

Kobojunkie:
In much the same way, these citizens, organizations are doing the right thing by contesting the right of the government to take demolish property that they believe is legal and they have proof of. Regardless of lagos’s need for 22nd century infrastructure, Lagos needs to respect the rights of the people even as it pushes forward. We cannot throw the rights of the people under the bus simply because we want development. Development should respect the rights of the people.

The organizations and individuals are in the right here. They have chosen to take their case to court which is the way things ought to be done in a civilized society. The outcome of the case will be determined by the courts, but I do hope that justice is served in this; if the buildings are found to be legal, the government should allow them stand or look to compensate the owners before it moves forward to demolish. If the buildings are found to be illegal, then the owners need to look for alternative legal sites for their structures.

Can we all please stop acting like kids and stop making Lagos/Fashola issues into some good guy-vs.-bad guy/ You-are-evil-if-you-are against-my-side fight on here? It is ridiculous, annoying and seriously childish that adults will continue to, after all their years on this planet; argue anything in such a myopic and uncouth way.
The issue here is simple ,, of course every individual has a right to contest in the court of law but like i said if destruction of these buildings would pave way for the expansion of roads that will benefit millions and generations to come then the LASG should take thos buildings down and compensation paid even before the destruction. If these buildings are illegal anyway then they should be removed and from all indications these people dont even have C of O and there is a rift of ownership between families. Once it is been established it is illegal there should be no sentiments attached t o it. If it is legal then compensation should be paid.

Although i support neither team i was happy Liverpool got hammered yesterday. The hype about Benitez been a europe CL specialist is all over. Liverpool were humilated , disgraced and shattered. They couldnt have an answer to Hiddinks methodology of attack , attack and attack!!! It was these same reds that cheated us out of the CL last year.

Lets now talk about Chelsea vs Barcelona as the 2nd leg of their 2 Q/F is as good as useless.

C'mmon Gunners its your year!!!!

@ireport/deepzone/st funmi/earthmama

Honestly ur comments are dissapointing , i thought u were more intelligent than this but u really shouldnt have stooped this low to make these sentimental comments that lack any legitimate sentiment.

Fashola is doing the right thing and any illegal strucutre that contribute a nuisance to the environment should be taken down. Lagos need infrastructure for the 22nd century and if it is buildings that would stop that from happening it should be taken down and compensation paid. If it is illegal then i am sorry illegality has no place in law.

The prophet visited the site of the masjid of Solomon (PBUH). The buildings are mere strucutres, what is important is the location and that was where the prophet visited (SAW)

The mousque was built by Umar in 8 -  10 yrs after the death of the Prophet (PBUH). The 50 yrs is false and stop peddling falsehood.

By the way Moyin there is no point derailing this thread again if you want to discuss this again you know the islam section better than any othr section and you could go there and lets not de rail this thread like others

the only issue here is it is a Saudi king and not the Queen on England , otherwise there would not be so much hype here. Topic is irellevant as far as i am concerned. Obama is just a smart politician using every tool in his hands to win the confidence of world leaders and then he has them in his firm grips.

@Davidylan
That useless saudi king is in no way the leader of 1.2 billion muslims he his the leader of saudi arabia with 17 million people and doesnt even have any influence on his neighbour tiny Qatar with less than 1 million people.

I didn't realize stating something, whatever. Woow. This place is worst than a CIA run organization. Its a forum that has rules more strict than a website for preteens. Your probably going to ban me for this but I'll say it. You claim your an atheist, however, after watching a documentary about the miss world riots in Nigeria I have come to two conclusions about you, Seun. Either you are lying about being a Muslim or you are afraid of Muslims. I think the Nigerian muslims have people scared out of their nickers.
Must you criticise the owner of a site for banning people he deems are not following the rules?

Do you pay him for using the forum?

He says "muslim only " section which is explicit and you still sprew basesless sentiments of him been a muslim or afraid of muslims which is illogical as far as i am concerned.

Horus:
Muslims worship a white meteorite as a holy black stone, in a cube shaped building called the Kaaba, that fell from the sky white and when kissed it turned black from sins.So pay attention black people;Sins according to Islam is black that's why it was so easy for Muslim Arabs to sell us Africans as slaves. In fact in the Koran it tells you evil people on judgment day will be cursed and their faces will turn black, Koran 3:106 that is racism. that religion is obviously not for african people.
Now,Questions for Muslims Imaams, Amiyrs, etc. They should give reasonable, sensible answers:
If the black stone turned black because of sins (racist statement) of those who touched it, then why is the Ka'ba covered with a black cloth called a kiswa, if black is symbolic of sin?
Lazy research is a crime in the field of intellectualism. The issue of black and sin is complete nonsense and saying islam favours racism shows the greatest ignorance of the faith. If there is any faith that has the strongest oppostion to racism it is islam. Note i havent said muslims or arabs I have said it is Islam. The muadhin (One who made the call to prayer) For the prophet was a black slave Bilal. He was freed from been a slave by I think Abu bakr. The prophet talked great about Bilal that other companions felt nothing but righteous envy for him and wanted to be like him. This was a foreigner in an arab land and held a high status in islam. Please lets debate with intellect and facts . If black was associated with sins why muslims kiss the black stone or why does the kabah have black cloth. Why do 70% of arab women wear black clothings?
PoliticsRe: How On Earth Can Pdp Be Defeated In Nigeria? by Lagosboy: 5:26pm On Apr 02, 2009
They can be defeated by getting rid all the imbeciles in the cabal who have been ruling us since independence. They should all be kicked out and sent to the abyss of political extinction. OBJ 76 - 79 ,IBB 85-93 , OBJ 99 - 2007, Yaradua senior no 2 76 - 79, yaradua junior 2007 - God knows. All these men are members of PDP. Anenih is abt 80 and has been around since the 70s as well. Adamu chiroma been in govt since the 60's he ws the PDP convention chairman that selected yaradua.

all these old men are nothing but waste of space and their presence would forver spell doom for our dear nation.

KunleOshob:
This thread shows a lot of lack of understanding of what the G20 is all about. The G20 is simply a group of the top twenty economies in the world and south africa happens to be one of them. Though they are the only African country there they are not there to represent africa they are there on their own merit. as for the AU issue, AU is not a country so it cannot be invited as G20 is made up of countries and NOT unions.
But the EU is present and it is not a country. What is the yardstick for this top 20 economy thing if i may ask pls co si know u have a better understanding of economics
PoliticsRe: Why South Africa Instead Of African Union? by Lagosboy: 2:59pm On Apr 02, 2009
Evryone talks about the tackling of poverty, helping Africa bla bla bla and when it comes to an economic summit to discuss the global economy Africa is left in the cold and one country is representing itself and not even Africa.

Epiphany:
Another reason may be the fact that the EU is a collection of countries that have 'open borders' - meaning that since they share the same currency, operate free trade and population movement btw them and have a 'single voice', they can be thought of as ONE COUNTRY and one big economy.
Not all of the EU have open borders and it is just the countries that are landlocked together (Shen gen) although the EU passport moves you freely around the EU zone. Not all EU member states use the euro as well. Why does the G20 have France, Germany, UK and then EU when the 3 countries are part of the EU already.

The same thing happened last year south africa only was invited which is absolute nonsense.

I beg to diasgree on this. AU should have been invited and not just one country from the whole of the 52 countries in Africa. I personally think it is a disrespect for the whole continent and it implies we mean nothing to the world economy. If the EU is the 20th country then AU should have been officialy invited.

South Africa is in no way the best run country in Africa.

AU is not there because of Gaddafi. undecided
