I pity the future, imagine young boys and girls growing up realizing it is ok to date same sex?
few rejections or heartbreak and the whole world will be gays, do the maths

we need stiffer punishments for men who dare defile or initiate young kids, their privates should be truncated

Could it be the 6" block foundation in PH. Tell me you haven't seen other builds like that on this same platform by the most respected builders or maybe you choose to turn blind eye to them because it's not Brabus.

Once again God punish hypocrisy! angry

I'm sure you'll be familiar with this build and the pictures below because you made comment on the thread. How come you and the whole Nairaland didn't wade in to help? shocked Because it's not Brabus?

There's a big difference between fact and fiction. Everything I've said here are backed up with verifiable pictures/datas and not some postulated theories. Until you show me the same bro, I'll only take it that you're on a long-thing.

Why is it hard for the designer to send the pictures of the structural calculations? #givingtreatmentwithoutprescription #ideaisneed
Sir Brabus:
If God were to punish "HYPOCRISY', you and many others would be dead by now but God is a merciful God. grin undecided

I am not going to dig into your "Building past and the various shenanigans that followed" as you suggested ....because YOU know them, I know them and we all know them! They are on "digital record" here on Nairaland.

I am not someone to "gang-up" with other people l have never met (and no one here has ever met me in real life as well) because l am able-enough to take on anyone in a discussion (l say this with due respect and modesty) and l dont bite more than l can chew.
I am not a Builder and will never claim to be a "Qualified Builder" despite the fact that l have built houses and have completely built a Storey building from "scratch to finish" without the input of anyone except the Architect and his team of Engineers who designed and certified the Drawings. To them l give the credit.
I am also not in your "League" because you build for a living while l dont!

Having said that, you will agree with me that any intelligent person, will pick-up a lot of knowledge from this property section... especially if you are naturally smart, educated, read widely and DONT BITE MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW! undecided

Apart from one or two people here on Nairaland, most of you who parade yourself as BUILDERS are not better than any "experienced lay-man" because most of what you know today, were garnered from "Question and Answer / opinion sessions" of Nairalanders .... but that is exactly what we are doing here; EDUCATING EACH OTHER!

Most of Builders here started out doing "Trial-Error- Correction" process, learning from past mistakes and you are no different.
So, dont start "forming James Bond" of building industry.

To be candid, you have pulled-off a few good jobs due to your tenacity and doggedness (as against being actually trained and qualified as a certified builder) and l give you a lot of credit for that but if you check, you happen to be the "most reviled" builder here on Nairaland.
That is just the facts of the matter. Take it or leave it.
Truth hurts!

While we all make mistakes, what we should be/do is act and speak humbly, especially to those people whose job you used as "Guinea Pig" in your quest for improvement as a builder.
You are the least qualified person to be making snide remarks like "God punish hypocrisy"!
You are very good at deviating and deflecting responsibility, when you mess-up.
As in many instances, just look at how you "stealthily and stylishly injected Abeokuta" into the post, to create a diversion and digression!
Smart though, l must admit
undecided wink

I can tell you the truth because l dont give a hoot (l am not expecting any favours from you now or in the future, beyond the usual "Question and Answer" that we share on Nairaland)
.....and l actually like you as a person (someone who is striving very hard and tenacious in his work despite having a different background. I also think you are somebody who does not shy-away from a "Building Challenge! these are attributes l respect in a person) but dont stylishly even try to be smart with me! undecided

Dont forget, the issue we started out with was nothing personal and was not about you, as a person. It was about "How to implement a helical/Spiral staircase without "obvious support".
It was when you started "lecturing us in a disparaging manner", like you are some Holy Grail of Building, that is when l reminded you to "take it easy".

Even Oga Spyder gets criticised. He and many other have been criticised several times and it was never a problem but unlike you, he does not go on this "pontifical defensiveness" that at times comes across as an "Effrontery" to the Client.

I suspect you seem to think "Everybody is out for your head" somehow? huh
That is not true Bro, Relax and free your mind.

*Be less haughty and arrogant, especially with your clients, when issues arise.
*Listen more and brag less. You are still learning and l pray God will increase your wisdom
*Take responsibility when you make mistakes or fail to live up to your responsibility to your clients, dont jump into "defensive mode".
*Sorry is a powerful word that solves a lot of problems, if and when used properly.
*You are educated to Graduate level (hence your superior packaging grin ) but dont ride rough-shod over others, using "grammar" to stealthily insult them. I have seen a lot of this in your 'rejoinders'. Chose your words carefully

Nobody has told you this before probably because there are too many Hypocrites around here who want to "please you" because they want you to give them a contract or want/expect a favour from you, in he near future or one or two just want to maintain excellent relationship with you at all cost (A good thing though) but l am not just cut out for mincing words. My Bad!

Remember, we dont actually see ourselves ........and sycophants will tell us 'what we want to hear' .... But a true friend is "your mirror" and should tell you the "brutal truth" without any fear or favour.

Now, you are free to dislike me for saying this or you can take the "good part" of it and make it a learning experience.
Its your choice. It does not make me to like you less....... and has no effect on me whatsoever

brabus:
@Donswampo, @all

Structural engineers work their whole careers designing a non-breathtaking and normal structure but yet the everyday structures on which we all travel and in which we all live and work.

Unfortunately, when a new house is built or considered by a homeowner, designer, builder or developer; little thought is given to the loading or load resistance of the structural elements supporting the house.

The primary focus of majority homeowners, is always on the floor plan (at least I can say that with authority on this platform), landscaping, and finesse. So, the structural elements that supports the house always receives little or no structural engineering input.

I'm lucky to have worked with big engineering guys and I can say it with authority that structural engineering is fun if you can be attentive.

Take a look at this simple scenario of how we build here on Nairaland:

Mr A wanted a residential building. First, he start to look at the area he'll like to live. Next, he start thinking about the house itself. How big, how many rooms, and the shapes. He gave very little or no thought to the structural elements which supports the house. He called his designer and they came up with a fantastic house with interesting features like the helical spiral staircase, unsupported beams spanning over 6m, wraparound terrace on 1.5m cantilever and many more. The next thing, he came online to ask for quotation to build the modern edifice exactly as the 3D presentation. Got a builder and construction began.

At what point did he require structural engineers input? Point of construction (just as you came and ask how a staircase which is an integral part of the building will be constructed)? Or while the idea is still on paper? That's how we roll and what leads to 99.9% of structural failure we see today.

Now, let's look at the following variables:

A floor plan is a floor plan. But two parcel of land are never the same. One land may be sloped, or adjacent to a river, while the soils of the other may have low bearing capacities or have a high water table. What about bad weather during construction? The construction practices to be adopted on Site A and B always differs, so also the skills and technical requirements.

So my questions are, why aren't Structural Engineers more involved in our designs at the conception? Why are we more particular about the cost, the materials and the esthetics?
Why aren't topics like the strength, stability and durability of structures, interpretation of building codes, calculation of stress, discussed until there's a major need?

Why aren't SE's more involved in our projects? Anybody can design, we have thousands of DIY homeowners but how many can design a structure considering the different variable and conditions of a given land?

NextHome
I hope you practice what you preach as some of your builds have to be amended over and over.
In some cases, Nairalanders have to wade-in an offer suggestions on how to rectify the problems some of your builds created.

We are not claiming to be structural Engineers but what the Poster requested for was a solution to a simple "short" staircase design, not some 3rd mainland Bridge ........... and the challenge is simple enough (Avoid Visible Support).

l think we should be modest ............so that "the Pot does not say the kettle is black"!

Abeg,, let us leave the matter. it is resolved.

BTW: The structural Engineers get involved at the Design Stage (They are supposed to work with the Architect during the Archi-Design state) after which the drawings are certified "constructable", by appending their (Structural/mechanical/Electrical) STAMP to the drawing.

They also coming-in during the "Building Proper", as they supervise the builder...... except where Builders like "Brabus" take-over their job and become Builder/Structural/mechanical Engineer all rolled into one! grin grin grin

Well, if the design is "simple enough", l guess with enough knowledge and experience, you can get-by.

where I have seen the stairs done it had internal steel plates constructed in the same shape before they poured concrete.
\

Thank you gabby, for this simple line!

It is exactly what l proposed earlier (as posted below) but because l have not done Computer-Aided Design with a lot of dy/dx to boot, ....they think l dont know what l am talking about! grin grin grin

lastpage:
*Can you first design a platform the shape of the base of the Stairs with wood
*Use "removable" wooden supports under it (Vertically and horizontally). This will be removed when cast solidifies.
*Reinforce this with a "thick, flat but ribbed" sheet of iron the size of the stairs ..or like 75% size (will serve as support for eventual stairs, but will be embedded inside)
The ribs can be in form of welded rods to it, basically to give it strength)

*Now, finally cast the base with concrete (using the ribbed-iron-sheet as reinforcement).... and remove the wooden supports after it cures.

The idea is that like a Decking, which you use wood to form and support, but the woods are removed when cured and it can support itself, using its internal re-reinforcement.

You can fine-tune it but if l were to implement it, l know l can pull-off this concept.

This is not like a decking especially the design the poster is trying to achieve. He actually designed a self supporting helical sphere staircase.

What he needs is a computer analysis of the staircase done by a very good detailer (Structural CAD Engineer) and not a what-I-think-should-work answer.

But for me, I don't see how he's gonna pull this off without support and adjustments to the design. This is not car shock absorber helical spring. That it will be finished with concrete means it will definitely need support but it may be hidden like mine and many others that I've seen anchored to circular walls.
It is like a decking, in terms of being self-supporting (after the initial bamboo/Plank support have been removed) at the end of the day.

Even the "Computer Design Software" that generates these designs and calculations, is written by people "Who can first CONCEPTUALIZE WHAT THEY WANT TO ACHIEVE..... put it on paper and then convert it to a software program!

We need to start thinking "out of the box" and not just doggedly rely on what is already available. That is how we innovate.
There is a "process and workflow" to such procedure.

I did same not too long ago ....No Sand at all.

It was excellent but ensure that it is well-mixed since the absence of Sand would mean that only the cement will act as the "binder" to the stones.
You will then have to strike a balance between "Cement" and "Fluidity".

My Builder was saying the Cement is enough but l also reminded him that the "binding effect" is equally important otherwise, cracks will develop during curing.

But even deckings use pillars though.

............

Regarding the staircase, I am not a commensurate builder or a structural engineer but I can not see who that stair as designed will stand without a steel backbone or a spine pilar.
Egun, you are on-point!

First, l used "Decking" to explain-away the use of wood underneath, as TEMPORARY SUPPORT.
That is, you use it to support the weight and when it is cured/dry, you remove it as the "cured concrete" can now be self-supporting.

Secondly, "Nothing floats in the air" ! grin grin grin
Except it is an aeroplane and that is only for a definite period!

The staircase in question will have a 'beginning'... and an 'end'! These two correspond to the basement of the stairs ....and the landing at the top.
This is where the supports will be (Start stairs, and end of stairs).

I am sure what the @Op has in mind is a stairs that does not have any support "in-between", apart from those at the base and "landing".

So, theoretically, like the span of a bridge, in-between one support and another, a RIGIDITY that is "strong enough to not deform", between those two points. Correct me if l am wrong.

That is why l suggested embedded, reinforced Metal plates that span the length of the Stairs but are invisible to the naked eye, when finished.

When it is still wet, you need the wooden support to hold its weight (This why l used a Deck as an example), but when it is fully cured, a combination of the strength of the Concrete and the embedded reinforcements is enough to carry the weight and make it self-supporting.

Igbo land especially Enugu where i have stayed very well, their are a lot of Yorubas doing their various businesses and nobody disturbs them. Do you know why? It is because nobody has time for them not because they are saints, but because nobody actually has time for trivialities! The problem with the Yorubas is that they are paranoia and have deep-seated hatred for anything Igbo, hence they always read meaning to non issues. What started this problem is the alleged election of an Igbo man as the head of the market association. I think in any human organisation, the majority always carry the vote. If the election was conducted free and fair i don't know why there should be so much noise. Maybe the Yorubas are saying since it is in Yoruba land that the leader of the market union should always be a Yoruba. But such arrangement may not be feasible if a particular tribe has the majority number. The leadership of the market should be rotational among all the ethnic groups there to foster peaceful co-existent. It is not ideal that it should even be contemplated that only a Yoruba person should head the market union.

I cant believe this sh!t is happening!! The Igbos in that place must never do any of those nonsense that !d!ot requested of them. They should either forcefully open their business or leave that place!!

You talk rubb**sh. Pls keep quiet if u have nothing to say.
Possibly u left igboland in 1975 and haven't been back since then.
The Sarkin Hausawa is the king or head of all hausa in southern states....The one at Onitsha lives at Bida Street, and have their meetings at Sokoto road where you have many tailor shops .
There are other sarkin hausawa in aba, nnewi, owerri and in the garki area of enugu.

I'm not quite sure where the heads of the yorubas live here ....but they have a HeAd....or Baale or whatever. so i won't guess.
Don't make general statements about what u aren't sure about.

If u tell me that the yorubas and hausas in igboland aren't allowed to have any posts.....i agree. Its something we should look at.
Buh don't tell me they don't have leaders here....they do, and they wear their regalia. But we don't bother about what they wear because it doesnt resemble ours.....we just look and pass.
dont get too emotional with him

The Question you should al ask yourself, is staring you in the face:

Can that Yoruba/Hausa King/Sarakin/Oba/Eze go and remove someone your Igbo Eze selected to represent him, and impose their own choice in his place?

That is the issue at stake.

Address that issue and matter is settled.

PHIPEX:
The title of "Eze Indigbo" in diaspora is a mere ceremonial nomenclature. They have no power asides the mere authority the leader or chairman of any association has. Even at that they can't give an order. If they withdraw the "Eze" title and call him "Igwe" what difference has it made? It's completely uncalled for, for the Deji of Akure to feel threatened or insulted whatever word you choose to use. It's like a certain Herod feeling threatened because King Jesus was born.
if it is "ceremonial", how come he has the audacity to remove the representative of the KING (Babaloja of Oja Oba), in the King's Market?

Has he not gone beyond his bounds, for doing that? Or is he on the same level with the Deji of Akure?

Be honest for once please.

Sorry if I may ask between oba and the governor, who have superior power?' I need to be educated.
Dont compare Apples and Oranges.

Both are powerful..... in different spheres.

One is the ultimate TRADITIONAL POWER...

While the other is the Ultimate POLITICAL POWER in the same state.

That is Free Education for you, courtesy of Chief Awolowo.

Now, run away before l charge you "ego"

if you're prosperous in igboland, irrespective of your tribe or state the igbo's around you would start calling you the number one representative of that tribe in which ever state. igbo's don't feel insecure about anything. have you seen any igbo traditional ruler running to the media to give conditions for any tribe to live with them. I hardly comment on any tribal page bt insecurity and inferiority complex is the worst tormentor of man. why picking up a fight at the first place? did the so called ezendigbo in akure challenge ur authority? it's ezendigbo in akure nt Ezeakure 1in Nigeria.
Yes, he did....

And stop acting "dumb" like you dont know.

How do you explain someone who crowned himself a "King", and then goes to depose the annointed (Babaloja of Oja Oba!) deputy of the authentic King, .....installing hi sown choice?

Is that not a "CHALLENGE" to the Deji of Akure?

Do you know the meaning of "Oja Oba"? (The Kings Market)

Why cant you people tell yourself the truth? What is wrong, is wrong!

You dont provoke someone with authority, especially if he is your host, and expect no repercussions.

These Ibos are taking their imbecility too far
