jedisco: This is something I keep pondering on. Many times, many second generational folks I seen especially in less diverse cities have some identity crises. They're neither here nor there, worse still, they don't have enough numbers or a distinct culture.
Even on this thread, folks using denigrating words for new Nigerian legal immigrants are almost always second generation. Yet they strive to have some 9ja connection cos they want to be seen 'connecting with their roots'
Seems their thinking was their parents belonged to some 'prime stock' of Nigerians that the the white man gave the 'privilege' of immigration. Hence they want to set their own bar for immigrants. Fact is, their parents were just everyday Nigerians e.t.c with some opportunity. They keep asking you when are you going back? I dont have time for 2 much talk. I simply tell them im going back after graduation. I just dey laugh if na so e easy why una Papa no go back naija |

Progressivegee: I don't think it will affect those who are already on the system. Like the student dependents ban, it might take effect from future applications. In my opinion, I don't think it's worth it. One primary reason many choose to migrate to the UK over other western countries is because of its easier to do so. Tightening their immigration policy may see people shifting their focus. Currently, Europe and the UK has an increasing aging population which necessitates the demand for more skilled professionals. While other countries are looking to attract the best brains, the UK is looking for ways to eat their cake and have it. Australia has added additional 2 years to post study visa making it 4 years depending on qualifications and students are allowed to bring dependents. Newzeland has introduced the healthcare assistants route. The USA is granting over stayers a new type of visa route so they can work legally in the USA. But children of immigrant parents are doing everything to stop legal and skilled migration.
It's their country, their rules. But like Brexit, they will come up again and look for who to blame for the insufficient workforce admits a declining working population. There are talks of them rejoining EU |

BorisJohnson: Oga Lexus… This your thought process is like asking people to migrate to Dutse (Jigawa State) or Nguru (Yobe state) or Zungeru (Kebbi State) or Monguno (Borno state) or Oye-Ekiti (Ekiti State) or Abatete (Anambra State) or Nembe (Bayelsa State) etc….
In ALL the places I mentioned above, they can get a 5 bed bungalow for less than the price of a 1/2 bed face-me-I-face-you in Abuja or Lagos.
Question is: Are there jobs? What (really) is the point of moving away from London to Hull or Sunderland or Middlesbrough or Newcastle or Durham or etc… and there are no jobs there? You buy/rent cheaply, but there are no jobs. What’s the point? Yes there is farming job in Oye Ekiti |

SamReinvented: The first job that I got out of university in Nigeria (definitely not manager level), I was earning around a million Naira per month as at the time (USD 2,600 to be exact). It was for a US company and I was working remotely. I was not living in Lagos either, which means my expense was very low and I was saving a TONNE of money.
If not for second passport wey I dey find, I no go dey UK ooo. The math is not mathing in this country make I no lie 😂.
Anyway… I think you guys should let this argument to rest. People would have different perspectives and experience to things like this. At the end of the day, it is individual choices. Let everyone do what they feel is right for them. What’s more important to you. Earning more money in a country were you can’t drive at 1am or living in a country that’s fair and value human life? dupyshoo: If a white British has other nationalities, his/her british citizenship can be revoked too. That's British law. Don't make it about white and coloured. Also, her dad is living in Bangladesh, why can't she move there?
Regarding being 2 types of British, that has always been the case. You can't get some jobs in the UK and US if you have dual nationaliities. Dual citizenship has advantages and disadvantages. This is one of the disadvantages. We just have to live with it. I doubt if this is true |

Ladasit: See my friend keep quiet if you don't know what you are saying, if you have it easy in life most people don't.
The Chinese, Koreans and Co. get loans from their government to come and study. In this UK financial crisis how do you want to cope if you are handling your accommodation, transport and other fees if you are doing just 20 hours, especially if you are staying in London or Manchester.
We as Nigerians, we are hardworking and if the job is there we will do it and make our money to survive.
The funny thing is that most employers are not even happy with this 20 hours rule, because they are looking for workers but they are limited because of this 20 hours rule.
I met a British man one time that was complaining about how most of their citizens don't want to come out to work anymore, they'd rather work from home instead. He said in his city, shops and the mall closes by 4pm because they don't have people to employ for evening shifts and what he appreciate about Nigerians is that they are always willing to work. I heard if you scale through during PSW application they will come for you when applying for ILR. Is this true ? |

Last but not least!
If you withdraw cash from your lifetime ISA for any reason other than your first home purchase or retirement, you’ll have to pay the 25% government withdrawal charge. That means you could get back less than you paid in. 🙄 |

Meanwhile more and more students just came in this January. The crux is UK is broke and needs our money. koonbey: Switching before completing the course is abusing the system. Of course people are free to do it as it's legal but it's clearly a huge problem as those people take up spaces and then abscond thereby leaving the unis out of pocket but also depriving other people who genuinely want to study of the space since the unis cannot recruit ad-hoc after admission cycles.
I had a chat with an entry officer on my way back in from a trip recently and it's clear people are aware that the route is being abused. I just hope when the remedy comes it won't be too strong a shift to restrictions and loss of the current opportunities, because I know people will start screaming racism or 'right-wing' even though what has been happening is not something that they would entertain in their own countries. |

TheGuyFromHR: Try not to do the bolded. It may fetch you an unwanted escalation, which you'd rather avoid. And before you start waving the emotional distress banner, assess your own position and your actions carefully, as well as those of your employer. Documented and/or demonstrable ones preferably.
In my experience, probationary notice periods generally range between 1 and 2 weeks, so I assume you probably have the right of it in this case.
Regarding other matters which you may or may not have presented here, have you any documented evidence of the allegations of mistreatment and bullying you adduced? You mentioned the company refusing to stand guarantor for you as part of your securing accommodation, was this contractually promised in writing? You mentioned something about not being able to drive a manual car, remind us again - was your ability to drive a car part of the skills reasonably expected of you for this job? Does the company provide vehicles, and are those vehicles all manual (fleet vehicles in this country quite commonly are). What other grounds are there for your employer becoming dissatisfied with you and subsequently resorting to maltreat you as you say? Might the employer have grounds for a wasted recruitment claim against you?
In all probability, this will likely end with more threats and huffing and puffing, but don't apply silence to this matter. See it through. He shouldn't fret just reply them calmly stating the obvious. If they insist on 2 weeks notice just play along with them before you know it 2 weeks is here then you can leave their company. |
