Sometime ago, a high profile candidate rejected an offer we extended to him. As a recruiter, I was disappointed due to the time and effort invested in the entire process. The business had undergone a strategy refresh, and this particular role was critical to success at the next level. I took some time to engage with the candidate and inspite of my initial feeling of disappointment, I was impressed at his response. "I had a conversation with my line manager on my proposed exit and he asked me to consider carefully. Truth is the company has been really supportive outside of work. Infact, when I had a health scare, they went all out for me. I'd say I feel really safe here". This response brings to mind a research report I read which indicated 80% of #employeeexperience is based on the quality of interaction between team members and their managers. Only a meagre 20% is determined by HR! My 3 major takeaways from this experience are: - The talent market has changed forever! Employees are no longer impressed by paychecks and benefits alone. The 3Bs model of creating a sense of Believing, Belonging and Becoming by Dave Ulrich gives a brilliant emphasis. - #Empathy has become a key leadership competency. This is made even more obvious in the post COVID workplace. It is important to highlight the connection between the candidate and his manager. The fact that he felt confident discussing details of a new offer without fear of discrimination speaks volumes - Businesses should strive to create #psychological safety across teams by making leadership development a priority. I like to say the fact a staff has spent 10years in a unit doesn't qualify him/her to become manager or team lead! Leaders play a vital role in shaping organisational #culture as such attention should be given to the quality of individuals trusted with the responsibility of leading teams. A shout-out to leaders who truly inspire. May we find them, may we be them. Your thoughts? #emotionalintelligence |
I once worked for one back in 2012. Both the woman and the man were pastors. The pay was was very low and sometimes it will be half of your total salary. One thing I noticed was that whenever they want to introduce a bad policy, they start with biblical verses and then give a flimsy reason for the decision. You cant fight it because what can you do when your coworkers has been brainwashed grin Well when I look back now I understand why they couldn't pay or slashed salaries. The school was being constructed with different loans. They had to pay back so there is no way they won't cheat the workers if at all they intend to meet up with the loan requirements. Also, they lick thy arses of parents, discipline is done by the principal ALONE, infact I pity this generation. During External exams you MUST assit the students otherwise you will not get paid. I started sex education during extra classes, I cannot come and kill my self |

They say we have the power to choose our bosses, but the reality is that that power comes once we know what we want in career. When we are truly authentic with ourselves. When it comes to bosses, I am lucky to have the best. He inspires growth. Constantly encouraging one to reach out for their greatest potential. Part of who I am today, is because of his constant pushing. We all need people like him in our lives. God bless you Sylvester Oluoch! I remember telling a friend at the beginning of 2022 that before April, I will have boarded a flight and not fly within Kenya but beyond. You see that thing they say about speaking things into existence? It is real. I was confident about it because I already had a passport. If you desire to own a car, start by getting a driving license. Actualizing faith right? March 2nd my boss asked me to check out return tickets for Kampala. There is this great man in Kampala he wanted me to go and interview. I have never been so excited. My producer and I worked on the travel logistics and we were set! Keep it here for a tale about the entire trip |
What makes a good boss? It's easy to talk about what makes a bad boss, but how do you know when you've got a good one? |

I got an invite for the above named company for the position of a receptionist Any lead on their working conditions Salary I have Google already no information about working conditions and salary. Please I will be coming from Abuja for this job interview |
After reading through your article, I recalled every good and bad boss I've ever had! I had experiences of the micromanaging boss and the aloof boss and it's amazing that what you pointed out on how to handle each of them is exactly what I did! I gave every bit of information to the micromanager, even information that they weren't asking for but I thought was relevant to project. I set the structure for an aloof boss and in the end it created a harmony in both working relationships. It's was something very hard to navigate in the moment, but I'm happy to say that those skills I learned from both of those kinds of bosses help me with my work today. Great tips! And I hope everyone who is in similar situations can put these strategies into practice. |

I accepted contract jobs before and it feels like lay off when the contract expires. Chances of contract jobs to be converted to permanent jobs are rare, I tried before but most companies have no capacity to do such change. Sighh.. |
