Coolcube: Abegi no mind them. My roomie in uni left Naija in 2014. I continued in acada line, suffered a few months of unemployment, status changed to underemployment (40K with a Masters) and later gainfully employed and doing well in the corporate world. My roomie who japa then now has 4 kids (citizens), doing well financially, took his parents on countless trips abroad, has BUILT houses and has a fine career after going through the pains of studying a good course overseas.
Me: doing well too by the grace of God. But the difference is still clear like 7up. Inflation and rising cost of things no gree me tangible savings, even with an averagely good salary . I cannot afford to give 1million naira gift now or buy my parents a car. Even to buy a car for myself na to save up more than a year or loan, building one bungalow with serious calculation ... the reality of many working class Nigerians who cannot steal or does not have access to stealing from the national pot.
Is there suffering abroad....? sure! But after suffering and taking the pains to advance yourself educationally, one will definitely be better off. Education can be scam here, but out there in Europe and North America, once you can get educated and keep pushing, things will be better off. Some PhDs here in Nigeria teach JAMB students while others are grossly underpaid in private unis....
OP, travel, but have a plan and target. If I ever travel in this my mid life, it is either to lecture (education - do a PhD), re-skill into tech (education) or get my wife re-skilled into health care (education). It is all EDUCATION FIRST, jollification later. Even the three steps can be followed through. Nice one baba |

gforce5: OP, as an immigration lawyer, I will give you free advice that I otherwise would have charged as consultation fees. That N7million is not as big as you think it is. If you decide to migrate to the English speaking common law countries (U.S., UK, Canada, Australia and Ireland), just know that money will finish between 6 months to a year. If you must japa, migrate to countries where citizenship is guaranteed within a space of 5 years. With a second passport, you can move back to Nigeria anytime you want. Your descendants will forever be grateful for what you have done.
The only European countries worth looking with your budget are France and Finland. Education in those countries are relatively cheap compared to most western countries and you can naturalize within a space of 5-6 years (look at their nationality laws online). Don't bother with Germany as they don't accept dual nationality and you must have a fixed amount $8,000 before you can pursue your education there. You can think outside the box and look at Latin American countries. Brazil is an ideal destination. The cost of living in that country is low compared to the West. Their nationality laws are straightforward and Brazilian passport grants you visa-free access to most western countries. You can kill two birds with one stone and set up a business in Brazil with your remaining balance. Mexico is another option. Cost of living there is cheap and it is next door to the States. You can get married to a native there and obtain your citizenship within a short period.
Overall OP, think carefully about what you plan to do. Do your research. Don't rush to do anything rash. Ignore most of the posters here telling you to make multiple "investments" in Nigeria. They don't know anything hence why they keep voting for mediocres. The country is not getting better. Nigeria has been in decline in the past 40 years. Our problems didn't start in 1999. Just think about it, N1 in 1981 was $0.750. $1 in 2001 was N90 and $1 in 2021 was N450. You don't have to be a soothsayer to know what will happen in the next 20 years. The wise one has spoken!! |

Infact, the white nurses ( girls) have mad love for the blacks that the black guys even run away for fear of being put into problem cos of excessive drinking and smoking. Some kids might be racist at first but if they see you are intelligent, they start dropping it. They like to stand in the buses, not just because they don't want to seat close to black I read your last post on your Diary and I really hope you're okay... Sending love to you dear |

celtel: Hi if it is true you have the 4000 pounds offer, this is my honest opinion as I presently stay in the UK( outside London) and left a 7digit salary to come here too. Firstly pray and get GOD's leading and if that is done, 4000pounds is more than enough for you. my own expenses are below: House rent - 742 Council tax - 130 Gas - 30 Standard meaning you can put on anything when and how you want. Electricity - 45 TV Licensing - 159 Feeding for 4 - 300 max transport - 120 0r less, because I work from home.
Total = 1,526
As long as you are cool headed and also I just got a car so transport will become easier for my and my family but I have also paid insurance and tax for it ( insurance is expensive because we are still going to be using international passport to drive for now is 200 including tax.
Your 4000pounds is worth much more than your N1,500.000. Smart Analysis |

tems777: I will comment for the benefit of those who might want to learn from let's say this hypothetical situation BTW, Ive been in the UK for 24 years, 16 of those in the tech industry and I run a tech company 1. it is not likely but also not impossible that you will get a £4000 after tax offer from Nigeria. I employ people and I am a voice in that industry in the UK 2. If you were to get even £2500 net(that is a salary of £40,000 gross) you would be better off than what you earn in Nigeria why? a. You discount the fact that your partner(future or present) would also come into play. Make that £2500 times 2 so family income increases to nearly two times your earlier estimation whilst the rent/mortgage is constant or marginally increases. Housing is the only monster responsible for 45% of expenses in the UK. That may not apply in Nigeria due to scarce opportunities. My mrs actually picks up 30% to 40% of our expenses and "im a big boy " lol b. UK favours people with Children so that would come into play c. If you are good, eventually you could be earning £600 to £700 times two per day- yeah £1400 per day - as a contractor. Yes a lot of people are holding two contracts at that rate. The question is how much more can your current income grow in Nigeria d. A UK passport likely awaits you. Being a nanny state, you will be looked after - cradle to grave e. UK is not that expensive. It is a lie. A 3 bedroom house in say Dagenham(£1400 per month) which is only 45 minutes from Central London on the tube, is nearly comparable to one in Lekki. Food is very cheap in the UK and yeah, your healthcare is insured f. You are not barred from ever going back to Nigeria just because you went to UK but the opportunity for UK is likely to dry up after the people who left because of Brexit have been replaced. UK is deliberately letting people in g. Your UK headroom is much higher so to say h. I will also argue that to get similar standard of living in Nigeria(good school for kids, security. healthcare, travels etc) you will spend much more for what is a commonwealth in the UK. Trust me. I have friends who used to do big boy to me then, biting their lips now, desperate to get out in their 40s i. If you lose your job in the UK, two weeks later you get another. In Nigeria I know many people that never recovered till death j. In nearly all cases, it is good to experience the west. It gives you that balanced understanding of life k. This highly under-estimated point -> your children start earning and investing from 16 to 18 in the UK. Make that 30 to 35 in Nigeria on average. This bit is what kills people in Nigeria. Most people's earnings start to go down in their 50s as they slow down So here you have it Amazing!!!! |

coolhumble: To those who commented otherwise can you please take the point and learn one or two from this? OP I salute you for this piece you shared today. You don't know what you have done for so many men who will from this day change their perception about their fathers.
I was already about 30 years of age before I understood what it means to be a man. I had to call my dad to come over to my place in lagos for the first time and we did shopping for him, made him drink his favourite and even joked about giving him a girl to keep his company. I had serious hatred for him due to what I learnt from my mom and some that he did that I know of but then when I grew up I realised what it takes to be a man and I made up with my wonderful father. He died 2013 which I still cry about almost everyday because I never fulfilled all my promises to him. Take heart sir...at least good a thing you made a move to amend things with him...and you even flexed him too!!! You did a great job sir please do not feel bad. I would say for certain , the smile on his face while you took him out should be one of your most cherished moments you should keep close to your heart ... Keep wining sir!! |

Feelings79: While this is true,it comes to a point where it's not just about love but mostly about home politics.From my observation of your situation,yours is still a much younger family and marriage.In my case,my first son is a university graduate,my second halfway through high school.It's a twenty four years marriage anyway.Meanwhile,my wife is now,on her own, economically successful.Women at this stage becomes very difficult to "love" since a woman's understanding of love is your ability to provide her what she can't provide for herself.Now that she's able to stand on her own, it's not no longer about love but the real home politics and I'm now seeing my wife in her true colors and how much a woman can be manipulative of the her kids Fear Griped me while reading towards the end. So how do you handle the present situation |

jimtemi1: Firstly,not that we didn't perform our duty as children, but we are not close to our dad because of many reasons.. One ,if we do anything wrong our mum will not beat us, but prefer to report is to our dad, of which he will beat us as if we were criminals, she will even be the one to beg us to stop crying when the dad that beat us is still angry even after beating us.. That lesson one if my wife report my kids to me I will tell her too to discipline them her self because we born them together, I can't be the only child beater, if I beat them, u too should beat them.. Dad doesn't have time because he had a lot of friends, so even if he gave our mum money to cater for us, mum does it as if the money was from her pocket. When he was now getting old he love us to sit down n talk like father n son, but there was no connections there from the on set, if we are even doing something great she will tell us to hide it from the man, that he will be telling all his friends and that may cos evil... Later I Now find out all she wanted is to have total control of the children for her own benefits I'm so sorry about this bro |
