cutievik: My man, seems that plane was never found...It seems.
My own theory is, bht got to it first took all they and possibly destroyed as many other evidence as they could.. It's sad sha, I don't Think it would have been so difficult to figure it out, from the last contact to how many miles it must have been before the crash, the pilot no report Mayday ni? Well, how about our airspace guys, is it possible for a flight to transverse our airspace unhindered? Sad to hear. If true, then NAF still has no idea what caused the crash and in normal times, would have to ground the A-jet fleet till they determine the cause. |

Wait, neither the wreckage of the Alpha jet nor the pilots were ever recovered?
What happened to all the breathless "intels" reaching some, that rescue operations had located the plane and were "hours" from retrieving it? |

Nemesis4you: I consider foreign policy magazine worse than horse shit
And bro you made me visit that crap and actually read that crap lol
As usual the ahole who wrote the piece shiit more than necessary to earn his dollars
Anyways regarding OFB what should have been done decades ago is being done now
Current government is being lenient , i dont know why , IMO they should have been sold off to private sector instead of being corporatised
There is a cadre of bureaucrats who are selected based on general exam to run OFB, most are from non technical background with zero experience so it is not surprising the incompetence of OFB , because of their vote bank power they escaped reforms but not working on current government
Anyways lets see, atleast something has been done finally , better late than never Never mind the medium; it's the message that matters. Perhaps corporatisation is the 1st step towards either full or partial privatisation? Then again, that's what was envisaged with our albatross, Denel, and it still needs bailouts by taxpayers. |

Kanu was not extradited by the UK. That is a very long and public court process. The idiot flew to a neighbouring country (rumour has it Cameroun), where he was arrested and transferred to Nigeria. |

Today, 21 June, the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO), celebrates World Hydrography Day. In 1951, RSA joined the IHO as a member and thereafter established the South African Navy Hydrographic Office (SANHO) in 1955.
In 1972 the South African Navy acquired its first purpose-built survey vessel, the then modern Hecla Class SAS PROTEA, which is still commissioned and in use by the South African Navy. Throughout her career, the SAS PROTEA was upgraded and modernised with the latest hydrographic and positioning technologies in order to stay relevant and produce world-class surveys.
Equipped with 2 organic Survey Motor Boats (SMB) and additional SMB in reserve, she and her SMBs are fitted with multibeam echosounders, single beam echosounders, highly accurate global navigation satellite positioning systems, modern commercial off-the-shelf survey acquisition and processing software.
This enables the SAS PROTEA to conduct coastal as well as deep water surveys down to 5 000m. Her SMBs enable her to conduct inshore surveys, as well as harbour and approaches surveys to depths as shallow as 2m.
Since the establishment of SANHO in 1955, it has played an essential role in supporting safe navigation at sea in the South African region. This led to a hydrographic service that is recognised as the best in Africa and also observed globally by the IHO as one of the leading hydrographic services. It is here in Cape Town where hydrographic data and products produced by the SAS PROTEA are further processed in order to render paper as well as Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs).
Not only does the SANHO produce these vital products that are critical for safe navigation around the RSA coast, it also maintains a network of tide gauges around the RSA coast and Namibia monitoring and reporting the state of tides and producing the annual South African Tide Tables publication. Amongst others; the SANHO produces and maintains the following:
● Charts in the National Nautical Chart Series ● International Nautical Chart Series charts for RSA and Namibia, ● ENCs, ● General Bathymetric Charts of the Oceans (GEBCO) charts, ● Various Training Charts and Small Craft Charts, ● Ocean Navigation Plotting Sheets, ● Monthly Notices to Mariners (for the correction of Charts and Publications) as well as 3 volumes of Sailing Directions.
In the 2019/20 Budget, approval was given for the commencement of procurement of a new hydrographic vessel, and accompanying support vessels and technologies. The contract - an international competition - was granted to Southern African Shipyards (SAS) and partners with an 80% local content threshold.
It is expected that the contract will be fulfilled by the fourth quarter of 2022. PIC 1 is the current SA Navy Hydrographic vessel; PIC 2 is the new vessel, currently under manufacture in Durban, South Africa.

MUTERIKA: but the initial post stated that he was killed in friendly fire, during training or so. Guess that was the reason for such grand burial. I don't know where you read about training. He was killed by friendly fire, during an operation in the DRC. He was a member of 1 Tactical Intelligence Regiment, who surveil the battlefield close to the enemy and away from the other body of troops. it is probable that friendly forces didn't know his position close to the enemy, when he was shot in the heat of battle. That's why a Board of Inquiry has been convened to debrief everyone involved in the action. |

Stormtrooper11: Jeez. Is this how SA buries all of its troops or this one is a high medal recipient? Just asking cos the activities are alot Soldiers killed in combat qualify for a military funeral, if the family agrees. These are the steps: 1) sending off parade at the deployment area; 2) welcoming parade at the repatriation point in SA, usually Air Force Base Waterkloof; 3) military funeral at the soldier's home, if the family agrees. There are some variations. If, for example, a soldier dies in a vehicle accident whilst on deployment say, in the DRC, steps 1 and 2 apply, but not 3. |

lionel4power: All these activities for one soldier!
Notice the woman with her hand on her heart. Even in her pain she's still making the national pledge.
That's true patriotism to country. That's the DefMin. On our behalf she orders servicemen/women to put themselves in harm's way. It's only proper she comes face-to-face with the consequences of those orders and the pain of the families. That way, one hopes those orders will not be given recklessly and without due deliberation. |
