Christianity Etc › Re: Nigeria’s Oldest Pastor, Samuel Sadela, Dies At 114yrs by macof(m): 9:58am On Aug 27, 2014
bcomputer101: Indications emerged on Tuesday that the Founder and President of the Gospel Apostolic Church, Pa Samuel Sadela, has passed on.

He was aged 114.

Although a senior pastor in the church reportedly claimed that the man described as one of Nigeria’s oldest pastors could still be receiving treatment in a hospital, he was said to have died in the premises of the church in Lagos.

As of the time of this report at 9.15pm press time on Tuesday, an official statement was still being awaited even as the church was said to have opened a condolence register for the man of God who remained sensational even as a very old man.

Sadela was of the Apostolic stock of Christianity.

His pastoral calling started in 1928 when he visited the famous Prophet Moses Orimolade of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church.

When he marked his 113th last year birthday, the aged pastor had expressed hope to live up to 200 years of age.

He had said “I feel happy to be this old. Actually, I feel like a young man. I still enjoy my meal of Iyan (pounded yam), Eba and bush meat. I sleep whenever I want to and wake up stronger I want to live longer to prove to all that God remains the same as He was in times past. If Methuselah could live for 969 years, God can make me live well beyond 113. If Noah could be 950, it is not too much for Him to make me live up to 200.”

Even if that wish was not granted, Sadela left an indelible imprint in the hearts of his members and admirers around the world.

The cleric, who claimed angels taught him to read the Holy Bible when he was only two years of age, raised not a few eye brows when he married a 30-year-old woman in 2007.

“The Lord is my strength. I am very strong and energetic,” he was quoted as saying after the wedding in Lagos.

According to reports, he first got married in 1934, with the marriage lasting for 21 years, but none of the couple’s seven children reportedly lived beyond their infancy. A second marriage, said to have been consummated in 1965, was blessed with four children, but only two survived. His second wife died in 2001.

A native of Ondo State, Sadela attended St. Paul’s Anglican Primary School, Ifon, Osun State, but had to drop out when he travelled to Sapele, Delta State to work as houseboy to one Captain Pullen, a District Officer. Sadela however retraced his steps in 1918 and completed his Standard six education in 1920.

Meanwhile, reactions from clerics have greeted his death. The Osun State Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, in a phone interview with our correspondent, expressed shock at Sadela’s passing.

He prayed that God, ‘will comfort his family.’

Similarly, the founder of Christ Overcomer’s Assembly, Rev. Dipo Filani, described Sadela as a highly respected man of God.

“He was one of the oldest pastors alive in Nigeria. There was a time he said miracles started taking place in his ministry when he was 90 years.

Culture › Re: Alaafin Of OYO With Yoruba Descendants In Brazil (pictures) by macof(m): 11:45pm On Aug 26, 2014
In anticipation of the Sango Festival which will run from August 21 till 30 in Oyo, a one-week bi-lateral conference was held in Brazil recently where the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, presented a paper titled, ‘Preserving Shared Cultural Heritage.’
The royal father, in the address, traced the
historical background to this cultural
phenomenon that has resonated in the
Diaspora especially in Brazil, Cuba, Trinidad
and Tobago and the Caribbean. While
highlighting the origin and attributes of Sango.
according to oral narratives, the Alaafin
remarked that Sango is central to the
sustainability of the cultural values of the
Yorubas.
Aspects of Yoruba customary practices that he traced to the Sango heritage include praise poetry, otherwise known as Oriki, and
drumming. Both traditional elements have since spread to different parts in the Diaspora. Oriki and drumming were said to have arisen from the routine royal court praising for Alaafin Sango Atanda Olubambi. Alaafin, in the Yoruba tradition, should be praised throughout the day as a mark of distinction.
While reflecting on the impact that Sango had on Yoruba and indeed world civilisation, the Alaafin eulogised the great Yoruba warrior.
“Being the king of justice and not understood by his people, he decided to hang himself in a tree called Igba, but was discouraged to proceed by his friend Mogba,” he explained.
According to him, Sango Alaafin disappeared into the earth, leaving his spiritual crown, amongst other things. Mogba, the supreme head of Koso, a suburb district of Oyo that is generally considered as a sacred place where Sango laid his power, is the custodian of the ancestral crown Sango. He is also responsible dor the coronation of the new king. Therefore, no king is installed without performing all the rites of coronation inside the temple of Sango in Koso.
Oba Adeyemi described the Sango festival as the most significant festival in Oyo, since it is deeply linked to the survival of identity, culture and history of the people.

cheesy my bro Fulaman you seem to be everywhere.
I never imagined you fancy Cartoons
Fulaman198: Book 3 just ended and Korra is in a wheelchair, I feel for her.

In any case, in my opinion, I did not like Korra at first for her brash spoiled attitude. But over time she truly did mature and she is an amazing character now. I actually think she is more powerful than Aang because she can metal bend and took on much tougher opponents than Aang.

Aang was a cool character his speed was something else as an airbender watching him run in one episode. However, as a 12 year old it took him too long to gain mastery over all elements (especially earthbending, just like it took Korra a long time to airbend). It would have been cool to see Aang be able to fly though like Zahir (Although wasn't he flying in his fight with Fire Lord Ozai?)
Korra in a wheel chair shocked how did that happen?

I always liked Korra, she could fire bend(or was it earth bend..maybe both undecided) when she was still in diapers

but to me right now, Aang is better than her, Aang had too much pressure right from the first minute of his avatarship, having to deal with the entire fire nation and the loss of his entire race, such pressure on a young child is too much.
Korra isn't fighting armies here, jst some individuals(terrible strong ones tho)

Yh I guess we can call that flying

Ekundayo7: I have never understood why Yoruba who are in traditional position of power and supposed to uphold Ifa tradition will marry Muslim wives. Her "dracula" fang is from going on Haj and getting a gold covering put on her incisor. Anyone with the means to do so, women, do it to proclaim to all that they have made the pilgrimage to Mecca, perhaps to make themselves seem an even better catch to some Muslim suitor. If I had my way ALL OBA, ALL TITLED POSITIONS WOULD BE FILLED BY IFA TRADITIONALIST WHO TRULY FOLLOW THE WORD OF IFA. NOT CHRISTIANS, NOT MUSLIMS - IFA MEN THROUGH AND THROUGH. AND THAT GOES FOR THEIR WIVES TOO.
True.

Culture › Re: Alaafin Of OYO With Yoruba Descendants In Brazil (pictures) by macof(m): 2:32pm On Aug 26, 2014
iwonbaoko: 1.Factually.
I do not agree that Alaafin approved establishment of Awujale of "Ijebuland" . In reality the word "land" is not Yoruba and there is no such thing as a "de facto" Ijebuland any more than there is a Yorubaland. Those eulogies are used for other Obas as well
2. Everything you say about the "authority" of the Alaafin stems from force or capacity for violence in a particular era. So to talk of superiority is like talking about superiority between Abacha and Babangida. Neither of them had any right to rule and there is no historical, canonical or spiritual basis for Oyo supremacy FOR ALL TIME. Empires come and empires go.Once the Romans ruled the world or most of it as did the British and now the Americans. In short the man with the biggest sword or gun in any era is king.
In all likelihood Ibadan which is a baby, historically speaking, was a bigger force at the time of colonization and was poised to be the dominat force in the area.

More important is the word "Yoruba". That word means a very different thing today from what it meant during the Oyo empire. The very fact that Oyo is considered "empire" tells the whole story. Ijebus,Egbas,Ekitis,Ondos etc were NOT Yoruba Yes they considered themselves Omo Odua and spoke mutually intelligible languages but then so did the biblical Israelites(in relation to Abraham) and many of their neighbours with whom they had endless wars. Often it is a mistake to assume that because peoples speak a language and have similar customs they are one. Much of Northern Nigeria today speaks Hausa and are Muslims but that is the purpose and intention of empire and colonization.

In my life I have encountered Ekiti and Ijebu people(now deceased) who would specifically refer to Ara Oke as (Yoruba) They would never refer to themselves as such nor even to their language. Nigeria and its prevailing context has created the need for a "Yoruba" nation and no doubt this has utility but the idea that we all share in the Yoruba glory of Oyo is funny. In fact at the very moment when Oyo were having problems in Ilorin other "Yoruba" nations saw that as an opportunity to attack Oyo.
To my mind The Oyo people are very distinct from the Ondo Ekiti and Ijebus. They were more of a colonizing force than a fraternal one. These peoples have other less illustrious origins/stories that have been airbrushed from the official story
Great piece.
especially the bold

Yorubaland area is old, being inhabited by our ancestors for thousands of years even before oduduwa.
But here you see many Towns have lost that pre-oduduwa history

Ekiti and Okun people are said to be the oldest by some articles I have read, only being mixed with other later movements from Ile-Ife, so is Akoko
Some Towns are extremely old but at the establishment of a new dynasty by some iconic individual, the history of the old dynasty is forgotten

how much of our history is known?? as only few Towns with dynasty less than 1000yrs have been able to keep their old records

We should develop our old knowledge which is the heritage of our ancestors and make good for ourselves but just a few people can't do this.

This country Nigeria is too large and diverse for that
But the real problem is that 70% of our entire population is either Muslim or Christian with High ignorance and hatred for matters concerning our tribal heritage

Most Importantly, I CHOOSE to go un-natural because I look tidy and cute when I get my hair done. I don't need to go everywhere with a comb or brush. Its economical and weather-friendly...attractive, protective and easy to maintain. It's not healthy to have your hair unprotected at all times, especially in seasons of Harmattan.

But look at it this way...if your son at age 10 gets into trouble in school, you would be the first to rush there and bail him out.

But suppose that child becomes nuisance to himself and the society and is about age 30, believe me, you would be the first to disassociate yourself from him, least he drags your name on the mud.

When a christian is saved, God permits others to pray for you, fast for you...etc.

But after a while, God expects you to grow, walk and start doing things for yourself. Unfortunately many won't. Most people still want to remain babies, doing naughty things and expecting God to over look them.

If your matured son refuses to grow up and face life as a man, after hundreds of efforts you've made on his behalf, believe me you would abandon him... same applies with God .
