Olu317:There is only one question i have for you for now; If Yoruba are descendants of Hebrews why did we need christianity to expose us to Hebrews? Certain families should have traditions of Hebrews and spread the knowledge of their existence I mean even Islam came years before christianity yet Yoruba seemed oblivious to the existence of the Hebrew or Jewish people |
hayoholla:Although this wasn't directed to me I have to say if you want to learn you should do well to question your teacher. "teacher don't teach me nonsense" comes to mind. The person who has the facts is the person who is right no matter what you believe or what opinions you want to religiously and sentimentally hold on to The complexity of Yoruba history is only due to 3 factors - 1. Secrecy and Mysticism which you can only overhaul(if you think it is a problem) when you are deeply in the tradition. The importance of initiation and active practice cannot be overestimated when it comes to Yoruba 2. Yoruba history is not Yorubaland-based or Town-based but first of all Family-based. Each family has their own history and traditions that revolve around certain events in the history of that family. Even what you might think are town festivals are mostly just certain families reenacting an historical event that is specific to that those families not the entire town. 3. The duality of most Yoruba figures. Most characters in yoruba stories have historical and spiritual aspects, the spiritual aspects are myths that guide the Yoruba religion. This can be a total mess to a person who doesnt know better, that is why you hear of Oduduwa creating the earth as he came down from Orun, yet that name is also given to the first Olufe (Ooni), take it as one side inspiring the other, sometimes we don't even know which inspired which...although in the case of Oduduwa the two sides seem to have inspired eachother, which the name Oduduwa coming from an older spiritual myth but the myth itself changing to incorporate elements of the historical events eg. Oduduwa the man, came down a chain from Ora hill, Obatala lost the war mostly due to his drinking problems So its complexity has is not due to migration or intermingling in the sense that you think. The seemingly different views of the Olugbo and Ooni's palace are actually both right, same way it might seem as if the families of Obatala and Obameri are telling different stories, they are saying the same thing just from different perspectives |
lavert:First, so a people can only be part of a larger group by descent? secondly, you said it yourself, Okun are yorubas, whether through acculturation or descent, it doesnt matter I'm sure you are not Okun, because even Okun and Ekiti have such strong ties that go way back. Also it would be nice if you directed me to a link or book that reveals the archaeological artifacts you mentioned And stop using the word "tribe" to describe these people. These are ethnic groups not tribes |
ArmedRobber:I haven't come across any Note: I'm not saying it's not true, just I don't take the claim seriously |
ArmedRobber:Eweka was known to speak Yoruba but asides this there's hardly any evidence that yoruba was prominent in the palace |
Femi Makinde The Oba of Benin, Omo N’oba N’edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, made an historic visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at his palace in Ile Ife on Saturday. The Benin monarch during his maiden visit to the Ooni’s Palace since his coronation urged President Muhammadu Buhati to stop the persistent herdsmen/farmers clashes in the country which claimed many lives. The Oba arrived at the palace in Ile Ife at 1.15pm with his chiefs and some dignitaries from the ancient city of Benin. He was received at the residence of Oba Ogunwusi inside the palace before both of them went into the hall where various cultural troupes entertained the monarchs. Oba Ewuare said, “This visit is to appreciate your imperial Majesty for the honour done me, my family and the entire people of the Benin Kingdom with your personal presence at my coronation. “This visit should provide us the opportunity to reawaken the cordial relationship between our two kingdoms which seemed unfortunately to have hitherto pulled off since my father’s visit to Ile Ife in the reign of Oba Sijuwade for reasons I am not too sure of. It is my prayer that this visit will restart the cordial relationship, which because of historical affinity, should exist between our two kingdoms. “We should explore and tap on what unites us rather than what divides us for the advancement of our cultural heritage and social/economic development. “It is gratifying to note that you and I have already been in regular communication even before this visit. We must increase visits to each other because such will augur well for the desirable close relationship between our two kingdoms. “Your Imperial Majesty, Your Royal Highnesses and distinguished ladies and gentlemen, may I crave your indulgence to highlight three major issues of national concern. They are the persistent cattle herdsmen and farmer clashes and their attendant criminal activities in the country; human trafficking and illegal migration and social economic pursuit to be indeed eloping underdevelopment activities. “The aforementioned problems are plaguing the country in unacceptable proportion. These problems are further complicated by our porous borders particularly in the northeastern part of Nigeria and lack of adequate infrastructure and dire need to improve on security architecture of the country. “While commending the efforts of President Buhari in tackling the insurgency in the North-East , I want to, on behalf of all traditional rulers in Edo State, join traditional rulers in Nigeria, appeal to the President, as a matter of urgency, to intervene in these and other threats to the unity of our country. “ The Ooni said the solution to the security challenges in the country was community policing, saying the people would know their policemen and the policemen would also know the people and understand their terrains very well. Oba Ogunwusi said, “You all know that we are all from the same parents. We are so interrelated; we have an ancestor and our kingdom have a very common ancestral history. We are very grateful and honoured to receive you. “We wanted to take you to our common ancestral place where Oranmiyan is still resting till today because we believe he is still with us. But we won’t be able to take you round because of time. We are having security challenges in Nigeria and the way forward is community policing. We should join the government and security agent to find a lasting solution to these problems. “This is Olokun Week in Ife and Olokun is one of the deities that the Benin people do not joke with. We should see ourselves as one big family. We should uphold our cultures, heritage and tradition. I am very happy that Benin culture and tradition are still intact.” The two prominent monarchs visited Orun Oba Ado, which the Director of Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Mr. Moses Olafare, described as the place where some of the predecessors of the current Oba of Benin were buried before the tradition stopped. He said that no Oba of Benin would visit Ile Ife without visiting the place where his forefathers were buried The duo prayed at the place for peace, unity and progress of the two kingdoms and Nigeria at large. http://www.punchng.com/benin-oba-visits-ooni-asks-buhari-to-stop-herdsmen-killings/ www.nairaland.com/attachments/7040802_fbimg15249434762116409_jpegf12a69305a495e2f104f9dd01318fabf www.nairaland.com/attachments/7041518_fbimg1524963024404_jpeg15ad72b0a397d05c71b251480041ae9e |
NetworkNewsNG:this knowledge is faulty sir. 1. have you heard the popular Bini saying 'Uhe n'o bie Oba' Ife birthed the Oba 2. Why is the priest of the Oba's ancestral shrine one of the people who accompanied Oranmiyan to Bini. 3. Why is the Oba called 'Ovbie Oodua n'uhe' son of oduduwa of Ife 4. why were the corpse of the early Bini kings taken to Ife for final funeral rights 5. why does the Ogiamien of Utantan (formerly Ogiso) claim Oba of Bini is a foreigner. Ogiso dynasty was still existing until Oba Ewedo finally defeated Ogiamien. 6. what is the hidden meaning of the Ekiopagha Treaty? 7. Why is any refers to Ekalederhan absent in the coronation rites of the Oba of Bini or any tradition that has to do with the Oba? 8. Have you heard of Ughotun, the town founded by Ekalederhan? If he went on to be king of Ile-ife, don't you think Ife people would know of Ughotun and even know of Ekalederhan being oduduwa? 9. What do you know about Oke-ora? Oke-ora happens to be according to Ife traditions the origin of Oduduwa. [If you want to know more about Oke-ora, you can open a different thread where i will answer your questions, or better get in touch with Ife chiefs - the Obadio and Olojudo] |
Moorish:exactly How many reading this now know that native Africans made up the large portion of the Moorish invasion of Europe? Yet some sit back in their small villages claiming a non existent achievement just to spite a neighbour rather than consider the achievement of one African nation as a cause of pride for all |
shizzle1:mr. Man it is from all sides.. igbos bash Yorubas for no reason. Stop playing victim And when you think of it, a united south is what both groups need.. when a united south is achieved we can start moving towards a united Nigeria And I don't necessarily mean political unity but a unity in goals and agenda and working together to achieve it |
Moorish:you see?! Foreigners look at Africa as a land without history, our youths cannot mention 5 kingdoms of pre-colonial Africa. And even blacks in the diaspora are taught that Africa was savage and uncivilized.. till now, even on this thread people are calling Yoruba, Edo, Igbo tribes.. can you call French, German, Dutch tribes? Ego tripping and refusal to learn, our people feel they know it all already without any struggle to obtain the knowledge. Why won't there be enmity? Everyone wants to show himself |
Born2Breed:stop acting like a fool. You know all I said is true. Quit denial. This is not taking anybody anywhere If you claim Yorubas did anything against you to warrant the enmity then state it with evidence. I put it to you that you are just hate filled and posing a greater problem to yourself than you think Yorubas are to you. And if you think you know so much why did you not answer my question? If you know you had nothing to say you shouldn't have bothered mentioning me. And in what way does calling a person you don't know kid make sense Do you know my age? Smh. There's something fundamentally wrong with most Nigerian youths truly |
Moorish:Good you know my activities here for years. Im sure I don't come off as a bigot or unexposed ignoramus. I have good intentions and hope for Africa, I think beyond Nigeria. That is why we need to set things straight, including our history. We cannot continue to treat ourselves as a people without history and tradition - it is from these we know our identity and obtain pride in it. |
IgbosAreOsus:oh shut the hell up you fool and get off my mentions. Go deal with your messed up life and don't bring your frustration here. It's not my fault your father never taught you anything. Insane slowpoke I've marked your moniker as another madman on nairaland It is infact very obvious that you are truly mad, what kind of stupid moniker is that? Useless troll, your only aim on this forum is to attack. Wasted life. Get off my mentions omo osi |
IgbosAreOsus:Says the idiotic fool that doesn't know what Obaship is in Yoruba traditions but wants to talk about the same Obaship Lmao .. Akintoye a professor of history is a nonentity? your father is not even fit to clean his shoes. Your father doesn't even have primary school cert. talkless of ssce. Oponu osi |
IgbosAreOsus:it is obvious you are an Insane slowpoke. Your father is not half as educated as I am |
Saladin25:I will recommend Yoruba Art and Language by Rowland Abiodun, Art and Risk in Ancient Yoruba by Suzanne Preston Blier, A history of the Yoruba people by Prof. Akintoye Ps. Suzanne Blier references the great historian and archaeologist Prof. Eluyemi in great length, you can try some of his books |
IgbosAreOsus:Smh. Obaship in Yorubaland is king-priesthood All Obas are supposed to be the head of the major cults and heavily involved in the traditions of their domain Ooni being a priest is the proper thing. Alaafin is also a priest, head of the sango cult worldwide That due to colonisation and foreign religions and many Obas don't fulfil their priestly roles doesn't take away the initial duties attached to the title of Oba |
Saladin25:Good, genuine questions are a good thing, we should be discussing not insulting 1. Ife used to be a confederacy of 13 communities...Each leader went by the title Oba eg. Oba Ijugbe, Oba Idio, Oba Ijio, Oba Iwinrin etc 2. Oba etymologically has the root word 'ba' which means to 'dominate' 3. Oduduwa coming from the sky is cosmology, a part of the creation story not history, do not confuse the two 4. Egypt is a recent nonsensical claim by people who normally attach everything to egypt. No reference to yoruba traditions. There are people who claim Edos came from Egypt too 5. Mecca, blame Oyo muslims of the 18th century who in a bid to seek legitimate reasons for their conversion to islam concocted a ridiculous Islamic connection to Oduduwa. No reference to Yoruba traditions I completely agree, it is attitude like this from yorubas that make people take Oduduwa as a subject of mockery. Yorubas have turned away from tradition, how many people take part in festivals, how many speak to elders, how many are initiated into one orisa cult or the other? the coming of foreign religion and colonialism has damged the mindset of our people and it is causing real lack in our knowledge and appreciation for History |
Saladin25:1. Yes, Oduduwa is said to 'come' (not fall) from the sky. But this is in reference to the recreation of the world after a great flood. It is those who are involved in Isese that know this. This oduduwa is gender-fluid, can be male, can be female. It is simply a tale based on Yoruba cosmology not to be confused for the historical oduduwa that is said to have started a civil war. People tend to talk about Oduduwa but fail to go to those who are traditionally assigned to Oduduwa matters. The likes of the Obadio of Ife who is the head of the Oduduwa cult cannot be bypassed when talking about Oduduwa# 2. Ijebus did not come from Sudan. Even in that same Ijebu-ode in the tradition is that the first Awujale Obanta Ogboroganlada was a son of Oduduwa and his mother was Gborowo. Oba Adetona is mixing things up, rightly so as he was not brought up in a traditional environment neither is he a committed african historian. In Ijebu they say ' Ijebu omo Owodaiye' he is confusing this for Waddai(which is impossible because Waddai was an Islamic caliphate founded in the 16th century in modern day Sudan). Owodaiye here refers to the first Ife, 'Ife Oodaye' in standard yoruba dialect. Olugbo never said his people did not come from Ife, he said his people own Ife and he is the rightful number Oba in Yorubaland, which is not totally wrong, you can ask why for a more detailed reply |
Saladin25:you have not done any findings 1. have you heard the popular Bini saying 'Uhe n'o bie Oba' Ife birthed the Oba 2. Born2Breed:o pls either you are intentionally lying or you are just ignorant. it is ego and vain pride that made bini go out of the old western region. provide the official reports to support this your claim that the major resources were coming from Bendel area? mid-west region was created in 1963, 3 years after independence, in what way did Yorubas or the Western region government extort from your region? Ok now after over 50 years of being away from the 'bad evil' western region, what development has Edo state obtained? is Benin city now a paradise? Use your head please Yorubas have done nothing against you folk P.S when did Japan ever dominate China and italy over europe stop talking through your ass |
ariesbull:I share your thoughts as well. They do not realize that it is dangerous to be at loggerheads with both large nations at both sides |
Moorish:i respect bini too. It was a kingdom all Africans should be proud of but these people of today are hateful and disrespectful for a people of such insignificant landmass and population They have no place in a greater Africa of tomorrow with attitude like this. Their hatred towards Yorubas especially and all other Africans in general is disgusting They are ignorant, boastful, rude, dishonest I stand by it, when provoked these people should gain no mercy. Yorubas have treated them as brothers for too long |
Moneywomen17:forget that guy he uses different monikers It is his lack of relevance in life that drags him to madness |
prolog2:why not provoke? Carry your madness on the street and see Only Ilaje will handle you, no need for other yòrubas to be involved. Insignificant Nigerian population won't maintain their level |
Moneywomen17:The Oloton (custodian of the Oba's ancestral shrine, Azama n'uhe: Uhe is the bini accents way of calling Ife) came with Oranmiyan and remained with Eweka Yet these bastards deny the fact that the Omo n'Oba's ancestors came from Ife |
ariesbull:honestly this Edo people need to be taught a lesson. They are getting too wild and disrespectful to people who can wipe them out if provoked |
Rexnegro:you are welcome. It's what I try to do here - promote Yoruba history |
prolog2: then shut up. You do not know bini history Your father failed to teach you anything no wonder you come here spewing thrash daily |
Born2Breed:Im sorry but that is very much false. There is no such stool in Ife. You can take a tour of the Ile-oduduwa if you care for history and culture. There is no such special stool |
prolog2:always mentioning me this foolish son of a foolish father who couldnt him anything |
