You are not being reasonable, the name of the people is AKOKO-EDO ! And you are claiming that they are not Edo.
I don't know if you guys are aware but the entire Edo state is part of the Benin Kingdom !
Would you guys please stop trying to make yourselves spokesmen for the cultures of people you know nothing about !
Will yoruba ever stop claiming our Edo people through the backdoor ?
the name of the people is generally Akoko.
"Edo" is simply added to distinguish the area from akoko-ondo politically not cultural; there's enough cultural and linguistic diversity within Akoko as a whole.

So "Akoko-edo" is modern Nigerian administrative protocol. And the area was not part of the Bini kingdom, part of the empire yes, but not Kingdom, and the empire doesn't exist anymore, Akoko-edo people answer to "Akoko" not Bini. P.s even Esan people are not part of Bini kingdom

Akoko area contains actual edoid, yoruboid, egbira and even it's very own Akoko(independent from others) dialects or languages
These core Akoko independent dialects are what I'm talking about not Edoid or Etunu languages

Please leave my mentions cause you have nothing to contribute to this entire culture section

You obviously don't know that Igarra (Etuno) is different from Igala.
Igarra refers to a town in Edo State and has no linguistic affinity with Igala in Kogi State. They are totally different from each other, so don't confuse them at all.
Igalas speak Igala Language which has a lot of Yoruba variants in it. But Igarras speak Etuno Language which has nothing to do with Yoruba as you have already seen above.
You are right, I confused them because i had forgotten the earlier discussion on the thread from long ago

Deadlytruth:
In Igarra usage:
Ozioma means a responsible child develops the trait naturally and not due much to parental efforts.
Iramofu means the future always is greater than the past and present.
Adaviriku means that a responsible father is a like a forest into which members of the family run for protection.
Asusheyi is actually a condensed pronunciation of A si ewu sha eyi and it transliterates to 'You should not hurry' meaning no hurry in life.

So they are not Yoruba names and have nothing to do with Yoruba.
Not being Yoruba doesn't mean they have nothing to do with Yoruba

Yoruba and Igala share a common origin, one more closely connected than the Yoruba-Edo-Igbo origin infact, and the Okun- Ekiti sub groups have had a lot of interaction with the Igala for centuries.

Don't take all lay man's translation seriously, just because aljharem gave his suggestion doesn't mean that's all to it...

I have read Professor Akintoye's works, both in international peer-reviewed journals and in book collections and I am still looking for his book 'History of the Yoruba People'. There is no doubt he is an erudite scholar of international standing.

But I think he is being a little bit economical with the truth here. When the interviewer asked him if the Kingdom of Lagos existed before the arrival of Benin people, I think it was obvious he was asking about Eko on the island and not about Isheri and Ota on the mainland. We know Aworis had organised small kingdoms in Isheri and Ota before Benin incursion, but I see no evidence that they had established a Kingdom and a dynasty at Eko pre-Benin contact.

I am sure the venerable professor knows this too and was just being dodgy.
finally, somebody that actually can talk history.

You are right as I would say he dodged questions, i feel the interviewer was more interested in 16th century events rather than the Yoruba, Edo, Igbo etc split he seemed to hammer on

oral tradition is not history and language is not history neither.
If this is how you guys deal with history in nigeria then you are not at the same level with yeour peers in europe, america, russia, asia and all.
Oral "history" is nothing but tales mostly fabricated.
Just like the legend of hercules was also an oral "history" and the tales of the wonders of Odin was also an oral "history".
Real history relies on historical documents, not tales.
You guys are not serious.
The funny thing is that there actually are enough historical documents to go back at least 600 years, what type of fooool would ignore those documents and focus on tales ?
Yoruba have no history, all you have are some incredible tales of things which you alledge took place thousands of years ago and got to your knowledge by oduduwa magic.
By the way, father christmass is also an oral "history".
Oduduwa is the yoruba "father christmas" to me.
You know nothing about history, go to europe and get into an internship with a history lab, see how they conduct research and try to emulate that instead of merely writing down tales of sun and moon light.
grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin see mr. doctor turned historian

oya tell us how to tell african history since the real historians are wrong according to you

and answer my earlier question - mention 3 historians who are more recognized than Akintoye in African studies particularly Yoruba concentrated History. To just do justice to this post, lemme add that Oral history is the foundation of the discipline of History, before anything is ever written in a book as a historical text, it passes around first - Orally!
The legendary father of History - Herodotus relied greatly on orally passed information, so did ibn Battuta

shut up about this europe nonsense; as i said before, I'm sure you are not in Europe but some village in Edo or Delta state spewing trash cause data is cheap in Nigeria

If you are not a skeptic then you have no place in the world of research, you are worshipping the likes of akintoya without putting their "work" to scrutini. That is why you can't be taken seriously Akintoye is abusing you with the oldest 41 scam in the world.
This reminds me of that doctor who kept prescribing expensive treatments to his patients who never questionned him because he had the best degree. It went on for a while and the doctor got immensely rich until one of his patients accidentally discovered that his "best doctor" was indeed the best doctor but he was running a scam on his patients in order to get rich.
I don't know your akintoye, I have never heard of him in any history lesson in europe, and I don't know any professor who has heard of him.
Your akintoye is nothing but a story teller, he should be writing best sellers in the science fiction section.
pity me? grin grin see bolo grin

ive told you to stop acting like you know historical science. Leave history to prople who study it and actually have a say in the discipline

Your video doesn't buttress your point
The video emphasized what every deligent history student already knows - "source material"
Without source material any tale is just a tale not history... that's what I do, I don't go making up history like some Ekaledehan story you and many bini people peddle without recourse for "source material" or evidence to back up said source

And when we talk about sub Saharan historical research we look into oral traditions as the primary source material, for evidence we examine oral traditions from other places, rituals and objects, language etc

Akintoye is not your father's mate, if you don't know him that's because you are not into history. Those who are historians have endorsed his books, a simple Google search will help your life.
Lemme ask you mention 3 reputable historians who would trump Akintoye on Yoruba history? If you don't know something just shut up, nairaland forming upon what you cannot be rewarded for grin

You can't tell a story which happened more than 1000 years ago without documents made 1000 years ago or archeological dicoveries.
Now this guy is talking about things he alledges happened 3000 years ago and he has nothing to back his claims except his degree ?!
That is not how history works, having a degree doesn't make you above scrutiny, your work is supposed to be seen and published with all the proof backing it just like in any other accademic field. You can't just start making things up because you have a doctorate in history. This is the reason nobody takes yoruba historians seriously.

I am almost sure this whole "studied in France" talk is a lie. You dont see other people on this forum going about making noise about studying in Europe. I am from Edo State but born and bred in Lagos, with no ties to my state of origin. My grandfather however was a native doctor, and as a kid before the age of 7 or 8 I remember my father taking me to some dirty native doctors place where I am sometimes made to take a shower. I have had incisions made on my body with blades after which some dark substance is robed on it.

My dad is a born again Christian now, prays and fasts often. My question is will the FOUR generational curses mentioned in the bibe affect me?even though my father who is now born again must have broken the curse with prayers? My life is a mess. I suffered untold emotional abuse growing up. My adult hood is no different. I am victimized everywhere, people take undue advantage and make mockery of me. What I find really bizzare is people coming together to gossip about me where ever I got I find this very odd, I am always hated, despised, lied against, unjustly accused. It goes on and on. I'm 34 now, will likely never get married because I have OCD and am Schizotipal, but i can live with that. But i am currently facing spiritual affliction by some bastards who accuse me of dabbling Into witchcraft and bewitching them. An entire family have waged a spiritual war on me, for what I did not do.

Heres the puzzling thing. I go on my knees and cry to God for help. God always responds immediately, but then they come back. I was made to understand that they are trying to take my life but God almighty stands in their way. At home I see cockroaches anywhere I am, in places they have no busines being there. When I play gospel songs by Paul Wilbur some thing strange happens, cockroaches starts coming out of their hidden places to die in my living room. There are birds all monitoring me each time I step out. I leave home and run to the hotel they still somehow locate me.

Recently my toilets keeps getting clogged. If I fix it today within 48 hours it will mysteriously get clogged again, I fix it it repeats the circle. I have another toilet downstairs exactly the same phenomenon. It's gotten so bad I cannot even use the toilets anymore, so I left the house. There us this bizzare smell that permeates my house and as a consequences i have been forced to live in isolationist. I have no friends, it seems to me %80 of my friends are into juju or witchcraft.

I was just watching a tape on monitoring spirits when I came across generational curses and its effect on generations as far down as the 4th generations. Could this be why I keep getting hated, lied about, gossiped about and taken advantage of?
Pls shut up and stop blaming tradition for your problems. what you have is Schizophrenia
