Tomide12: Away from the hustle and away from life’s worries. We tend to ease stress by entertaining ourselves. When you are deeply amused by Tonto Dike’s marriage theatrics, you may forget that the person sitting beside you has body odour. Movies and series are one guilty pleasure for those who indulge. They spend late nights or weekends to ensure they catch up with their beloved shows.
So just because we love TV and movies too and we enjoy trolling the people that share this our guilty pleasure, let's kuku run through the top 5 TV series that we Nigerians love to overhype. Starting for the king of them:
1. Game of Thrones
We know anything other than profound praise is taken as sacrilege when it comes to Game of Thrones. So before you come for my head, hear me out first.
Game of thrones recently dominated the screens and social media. Nigerians are downloading pirated copies and sharing with their friends. Everyone is talking about winter. Winter is coming they say. First of all, the rave was about the Lannisters, then Jon snow and now Arya Stark or is it Tyrion the dwarf. Ah, let us not forget about Daenerys mother of dragons. After crying about the loss of one character, we always find a way to latch onto another. It is not surprising therefore that for the past two weeks, almost everyone is talking about the 7th season of GOT. Banners, graphics, and even memes are trolling the internet. It got so bad that even haters took to twitter to boast on how they had not watched a single episode. But abeg who that one epp? What is it about GOT that is making people stay so faithful?
2. How To Get Away With Murder
People who did not know about the wonder of Viola Davis got to know about her in HTGWM. She embraced the character Annalise keating so well that it got her an EMMY award. We do not know why Nigerians love this series. But we suspect it is because we are fascinated with getting away with crime legally. Annalise is smart and the way she works with her ambitious students makes the thrill top notch. The suspense here is over the bar and is definitely not for the faint heart. If you are in trouble with the law, you know who to call.
3. Suits
This is another series revolving around law and its legalities. Harvey Specter is a brilliant lawyer and when in need of an associate he hires Mike Ross. Mike, however, is a college dropout but this doesn’t deter him from being smart and witty. We follow them both as they turn from friends to allies and sometimes dangle on a thin thread of betrayal. The series is not only entertaining but also educative. If you are a fan of suits please let us know. What is fascinating about white dudes wearing suits and plotting how to outwit each other?
4. Scandal
Olivia Pope thrives on scandals. From being the President’s media consultant to having her own crisis management firm. She seems to know how to clean up other peoples lives except hers. Her clients have histories and secrets that must be taken care of and so does she and her staff. Again, we can see that Nigerian want to know how to get away with anything. It is a pity that we may not be able to have our own Olivia Pope unless your baba in the village is strong.
5. Power
This series shows that it is only a ghost that can run the underground business and be good at it. It is, however, a pity that Nigerian ghosts are only good at finding their soul mate or looking sideways to cross the road. James St. Patrick the Ghost has a successful nightclub but what you may not know is that he also runs another operation: a drug empire that serves only the rich and influential. You see Nigerians we too like bad things. We may have had our own ghost in Evans but we are happy that his identity has been revealed.
Nigerians like a good story, we like power and danger. We love the thrills that come with being smart and witty. And yes we overhype what we love. Well, I am in my house watching “Nkoli Nwa Nsukka”, you cannot get to me.
Iphekitan: A man called Lamurudu, at that time, introduced Yoruba to Mecca it was not known as Yoruba, just as Idolatry or Polytheism. One of the offspring of Lamurudu was Oduduwa II, was also alleged to have been King of Gogobiri and Kukawa, which are tribes in Country. The Hausa Were the Yoruba Muslims at that time. They spoke Yoruba language and Aramic type Script. They later develop their own unique language Called Hausa, still been spoken today. In the fifth century Mecca was the world trade centre. The Yorubas and others, who were considered polytheist, were permitted to practice their religion, having migrated a few thousand years before and being the natives of that time. They were called Sabeans and Nabateans. Others worshipped the stone deities, of the Moon God, Allat, his wife and family of daughters. 360 Gods were in The Ka'aba. This was before the time of Muhammad. Oduduwa was alleged to be the heir to the throne of Mecca. He went back to the religion of his forefathers during the reign of his father Lamurudu. They decided to bring their people back to the worship of their Ancestors. So, one night, Asara, a Lamurudu priest was ordered to put idols in The Ka'aba, which at that time was attributed to one Deity, Allat. However because Asara's son was a monotheist he was unable to bear the thought of idols residing in the Ka'aba, so he destroyed it. This unitary action brought about civil war, between the polytheists and monotheists. The monotheists were victorious, King Lamurudu was killed, and his children were expelled from Mecca.
Iphekitan: I thought this topic would have closed by now. I know Oduduwa descendants(The Kabiyesis) tried to replace history with fables. Ekiti people had lived on Okiti(Mountain areas) for more than a million year. Oduduwa and his family were immigrants. There is nothing like somebody dropping from the sky(Heaven). And even if that had been the case, it means Oduduwa was an ALLIEN, which he was anyway; but from another part of this planet. A warrior he was. His children and descendants took over ruler-ship of entire Yoruba land by subjugation. That's the true story. If we were all descendants of Oduduwa, we would all have been modern Royals. They took all our crowns by force. That's the truth. Ijebu-Ode, for instance, was renamed after two slaves, who accompanied Oduduwa's son to take over the town by force. The slaves were called Ajebu and Olode. The town was originally renamed Ajebu-Olode and later became Ijebu Ode. Just the way they met our ancestors on mountainous area and renamed the area Okiti, which later became Ekiti. Ekiti people are indigenous people. Never migrated from no bloody Ife. That's why real Ekiti people speak the same language.
*I COAT*
This ajebu and olode tale doesn't make any sense... in fact its kinda stupid Ode means centre, main area...could be understood as "capital " in the context of "Ijebu ode" which would mean Capital of Ijebu. Just like we have "Ode Itsekiri"
Ajebu and Olode seems like Kings titles not slaves.
Oduduwa" as a name belongs to an ancient deity credited with the creation of the earth. This same deity is most times considered feminine and heavily tied to the Aje (witches) who are said to have the powers of the earth
Oduduwa-the man adopted the name, he was previously known as Adimula. His origin lay in Oke-ora
The man was kneeling and begging her to forgive him.
That's the evidence.
She's a smart girl!
Though I condemn what the taxify driver did, but she shouldn't have involved the police or she should have told taxify management, not to arrest him/charge him to court. Habba.....see him helping her to carry her load and even kneeling and begging her. They blocked him and deactivated him from the platform...... Which means, end of the road for him on taxify....and maybe uber self. Now they still went ahead to arrest him and they will still charge him!
That's too much!
That's not too much. All stinking men who harass women deserve the worst humiliation
Probz: Yoruba identity's always been more rooted in culture than language though. Itsekiri people aren't culturally Yoruba
In what way are Itsekiri not culturally yoruba? Even Edo culture that people like to say Itsekiri share is a culture yoruba can relate with. A foreigners first glance will see no difference between Yoruba and Edo culturally
Talkless of Itsekiri that are a yoruboid people... what about the ilaje? What about Owo? They aren't yoruba too
Having an ijebu and ilaje origin, speaking a dialect of the yoruba language makes them so
All this seclusion is political. If they were part of the SW it wouldn't be the case Not like that's a good excuse because even the Okun are catching up and reclaiming their yoruba identity
20CRATES: Akoko Ondo are Yoruba, although there were a few villages there that were speakers of edoid dialects but who have since converted, or are currently in the process of doing so.
Akoko Edo is where things get reaally interesting. It is made up of: * Etunos (who live in Igarra the LGA HQ). The Etunos are basically Egbiras who just go by a different name to be fancy because they are not in "North" like Egbira Okene people lol. * Okpameris, The biggest group * Yorubas * Unemes (Believed to be migratory blacksmiths) - some of them claim origin to as far away as awka. * Ososo * Sasaru - Enwan Etc.
In short, a tower of Babel , linguistically speaking. In Akoko Edo, you can encounter 5 languages within a 1km radius, or even different sections of the same village speaking different languages. During the times of the Western Nigeria internecine wars, they were one of the badly affected groups. They suffered some heavy Ibadan raiding, this was a period of high mobility, many Yorubas settled there and began to influence them, lifestyles and linguistically. A lot of them picked up the names of Yoruba war generals, notable people etc.
Then the Nupe Jihadists came along raiding and pillaging, and also left their legacy, especially in the aspects of traditional titles and rulership (although now, the nupe influence has almost vanished), you can still see hints of it in some last names lake Dawudu, Bakare, etc.
Starting from early colonial times, there was an additional influx of early Yoruba christian missionaries, Clerks, office/Government workers, etc into the area, they became influenced even more. The ones that retained their differences earlier all converted to Yoruba names. They all began to speak Yoruba language - which was honestly more of a plus to them naturally speaking, because of the regions extremely high linguistic diversity, Yoruba made it easier for them to relate within themselves and with their Yoruba neighbors.
Then, many migrated to major Yoruba urban centres and returned home with even more dynamics, influencing what was on ground in the villages even more.
That was how they became a more or less Yoruba people, although with ancestral very very old edoid roots. Roots that are honestly not even connected with Benin. But the original edoid stock of people.
Exactly, the deep origin of the akoko people go back to a proto-edo people who had just split from the proto-yoruba and proto-igbos. Many akoko languages hold words close to Igbo, when igbos never had a significant contact with them
As igala split from the yoruba so did akoko split from the Edo. It is really recently(starting from the late pre-colonial era) that the "yoruba" tag gradually became adopted especially by those in Ondo state as more and more yoruba culture and language influences them Its funny how a yoruba people like the itsekiri do not adopt the "yoruba" tag
Akiolu never said bini own Lagos... what he is saying in that video in essence is that the oba of bini is honoured during the coronation rite at Enuwa.
Also, the video is incomplete, if you watch the complete video(below), Akiolu said it clean clear that bini doesn't own lagos
KingOvoramwen1: Everybody .....Every tribe here on niaraland knows who the attache by force is...... Hahshaha ..... But we dey reject una like vomit at every turn!!.....
Oduduwa tell una say na sky king Aka Ogiso .... From igodomigodo and civilised you all with Benin Art and even the Culture Aspect you all are not still getting it right up till now..... What a shame
Ur next joke called Ooni is preparing for the next jamboree
Shut up ode.
"Oduduwa" as a name belongs to an ancient deity credited with the creation of the earth. This same deity is most times considered feminine and heavily tied to the Aje (witches) who are said to have the powers of the earth
Oduduwa-the man adopted the name, he was previously known as Adimula. He has no business with Bini or should I say Igodomigodo His origin lay in Oke-ora Even in the Omonoba 's oriki, it is said "son of Adimula, son of odua of Ife" Nothing connecting the oba to the ogiso is present in the traditions surrounding the Oba
AreaFada2: You have comprehension problem o. If you do not have reading phobia please read my submission you just quoted about expansion.
Does expansion mean scattering majority of your core natives to far flung corners of the empire?
Not in the Benin concept. It was enough to use a handful of Benin elite to rule over conquered or acquired territories. Lagos as a case in point. Soldiers, the prince and a handful of Benin elite like Obanikoro were enough to control Lagos.
How can you judge Benin imperial ambitions and tatics using your own warped idea of empire? Correction: Oranmiyan did not found Uselu. This is another Yoruba lie. Or those educated at Ibadan.
Usama was a temporary abode/palace even. Egor, was where Oranmiyan lived. Eweka I grew up there too. His granddad and ancestors had been the duke (Ogiegor) of Egor since Ogiso times already. Eweka I's childhood neighborhood village at Useh, near Egor is near a relatives ducal palace till today. Same place each Oba goes to chooses his royal name since Eweka I.
Luckily I saw history of Lagos on Lagos State webpage during Fashola time in office. It was very categorical how Benin ruled Lagos.
Growing up in Lagos Island makes no difference since Benin Empire denial began under Awo regime already. We all remember how Yoruba people turned on Oba Oyekan of blessed memory when he admiited his Benin origin.
You certainly do not know Lagos history more than a son of a former Oba Lagos who narrated pretty much same as I later found out years later.
We have nothing to learn from Oyo. Each empire has its own goals and priorities. For example while Oyo embraced transatlantic slave trade that spread Yoruba to the Americas, Benin prohibited slave trade. Only allowing only parts of non-Benin people of the empire who insisted on slave trade to sell and buy themselves ONLY. So Oyo should have learned about dignity of man and integrity from Benin people. Not making money by any means.
NOTE: There is nothing like "Bini". It is Benin. Oba Erediauwa and Benin Traditional Council clarified this several times over the years. But people feel the urge to varnacularise the name. The City is Benin (Edo/Oredo), people also Benin (Edo/Ivbiedo), laguage is Benin (Edo) too. I know the recent advent is shifting Edo to include all natives of Edo State but that is not the tradition.
Well if historians worldwide (aside SW BEDC people) believe from historical facts that it was one of Africa's most impressive, and one international organisation voting three Benin emperors among Africa's most formidable/greatest 50 African leaders ever, well that pretty much sums it up.
Lmao look at this funny guy. Expansion involves spreading your population outside the homeland and having them retain the homeland identity. you admitted Bini did not do this. Bini failed to expand...that is why it is not considered an effective empire Just imagine the size of the entire political area.. no wonder people don't even consider it an empire at all, of course because it is on the same level as Nupe, Ashanti, Dahomey...if having a little foreign lands under the King's authority is the big deal, we should call Nupe an Empire too After all Nupe took over Owan areas from under your control, Nupe has a better record at Imperialism
it doesnt matter if Oranmiyan was at Egor or not, fact is that his Institution was at Uselu, prior to his coming there was no instituted authority at Uselu, therefore it is not wrong to say he founded Uselu... i already said he was given the land by some Igodomigodo chiefs
Oba Oyekan can speak on his personal lineage(Oyekan is actually of Ijesa lineage, from the ologun kutere dynasty), but to declare Lagos is out of his reach, same for any Eleko...even when the British was to take over Lagos, Oba Dosunmu had to call the Idejo and 'take permission' to secede Lagos to the British, not Oba of Bini's permission.
The vassal arrangement of the area to Bini was between Bini and Bini lineages in Lagos who were supposed to keep the Camp(Enuwa), it doesnt seem to have involved the older Awori lineages....so don't blame the person who told you his own 1-dimensional version based on the history of his lineage.
it is actually more correct to say/write 'Bini'. oranmiyan named the land 'ule-ibinu' that got corrupted to 'Ubini' how you take to a Portuguese corruption of a corruption is just hilarious
AreaFada2: Lol. You are evolving very slowly..but there is hope.
Eleko was on same footing as local chiefs. Lol.
The difference is very clear. But you do not get it. Benin was not looking for "lebensraum". Benin land was and is fertile, more than enough to support the population for another 1000 years and more. Why take creekland full of snakes & crocodiles or even mainland that we did not need from ancestors of Idejo? Colonising Lagos was majorly for strategic reasons: Empire expansion towards dahomey & coastal trade route. Even Lagos sort of lost much significance after Oba Ehengbuda anyway after around 1578, though it remain a vassal of Benin until 1853.
and you call bini an impressive empire? If Bini had no intention of expanding then what is imperial about Bini? An imperial power seeks to expand, not just its sphere of political domination but its homeland as well
Learn what an empire does from Oyo. Oyo expanded its homeland ie. The kingdom of Oyo itself included towns like Ilorin to the north and Ijaye to the south. Dont get me started on the length of the empire(ie. Political domination)
As ive said, Enuwa is the only place under Bini 's official control...that was the camp Orhogbua founded. And its significance dwindled as the Bini people left under Ado were invited to settle in Aworiland...that was after Oba Orhogbua's death? Probably after that of his successor too.
But I maintain that Eko (the farmland that is now the main town of Lagos) was not vassal to Bini. Any Bini claim on the area was on Enuwa(the bini camp) at the edge of the lagoon. I say this because growing up in Lagos island i never heard any reference to bini lording over the awori people. But Enuwa is known to have been a Bini camp This is very similar to the case of the transition from Igodomigodo to Bini. How oranmiyan was invited by the uzama, how he set up camp at Usama and later founded a small community(Uselu) on lands belonging to the chiefs who invited him because Ogiemen wouldn't let him in. How Eweka became the first true Oba of bini, like I've stated before..and so
To now say Lagos was a vassal of Bini, is shooting yourself in the foot, because same argument could be applied to say Bini was a vassal of Ife
AreaFada2: If a Yoruba writer admitted this much just writing about Lagos, clearly mentioning Benin imperial power, then imagine the scale of it if done honestly all over Yorubaland & Dahomey.
You claim all of Africa was under Bini. After bini na Britain..so I'm not surprised you would claim Dahomey and all of yorubaland .I'm waiting for when you make a specific claim on Mali and Sudan ignorant bunch of losers
Scale of what? Go to Lagos, the Lagos i grew up in... Enuwa is the only place that Bini founded...that is the edo camp I wonder why its not called Eko if Bini truly gave the area the name
All evidence points to the fact that Awori word "eko" which means farm is the real origin of the name of the city
The Idejo invited Ado from Enuwa to Ido after the death of Olofin of Ido to come bring peace, the same way Oranmiyan was invited to bring peace at igodomigodo. It was then Ado's son gabaro who was the true first eleko..similarly Eweka I was the true first Omonoba...Gabaro led from his palace Igadungaran at the Awori farmland. Years later Ologun kutere dynasty began and he secured more power for the eleko...prior to this time Eleko was on the same footing as The Idejo, they were the employers and hosts.. same way Ewedo secured more power for the omonoba by intimidating the Uzama
Enlightened? I thought you said you dont listen to yorubas? You are very confused
The history of Lagos is well known. Try try try all you want, only fools who don't matter anyway will fall for all this bini schemes to claim everywhere till Europe
people refer to Egypt as a kingdom in the sense that, the kingdom was mostly baesd within the Egyptian state, unlike the persian and roman empire, that streched far beyond there main territories
but in reality Egypt was even more than a Empire, It was a civilisation.
Exactly. It would take away the glory of "Empire" to keep up the hype that Benin was a powerful empire. If Benin claims empire, so can Nupe, so can Dahomey so can Ashanti..afterall these 3 West African powers i just mentioned controlled lands outside their homeland But it takes much more to be considered an effective empire
adegeye38: Its an empire, not a kingdom, cos its influence streched beyond the land, just like the kanem borno empire in the north
It is an empire quite alright but a very ineffective empire..one doesnt expect all this noise about empire of that almost non existence outside homeland influence and small size. Look at Oyo, it expanded its homeland as well as Lands that it controlled.
Even when talking about Egypt, we dont scream "empire" but refer to it more as a Kingdom
enomakos: did the romans empire spread its own ethnic identity?
Yes they did. They spread their identity all over, they spread their culture and language
Look at Empires around the world, even in west africa..we can look at Oyo empire, how it spread its ethnic identity, culture and language through trade, political dominance and migration Everywhere Oyo went they remained Oyo and incoprated others..eg Modakeke, Ibolo, Ibarapa Even Owu that was scattered remained Owu everywhere they went and incoprated others
NkayTiana: see you talking. . Am not a benin girl am from Anioma.... delta, dont be dull please
You are the one acting dull here. Making noise about Bini being a powerful empire. No real historian or cultural anthropologist considers Bini a praiseworthy Empire. As a kingdom it did remarkably well but lets not exaggerate and insult true Empires
NkayTiana: Benin was an empire.... right from the ogiso era to the oba era.... please don't argue it, people that don't know anything about history be talking sh*t
see who's taking.
You obviously dont know what an empire is. A typical ignorant bini fellow.
Before Ewuare I, there was nothing like empire. And even after Ewuare, Bini's method, size and influence is not praiseworthy as an empire As a kingdom it did well but as an empire, it is just a hype and undeserved name calling
Ado-ekiti was founded as one of the original 16 crowned kingdoms in the late 13th century/early 14th century. It's origins go straight to Ifem Bini never controlled Efon -Alaaye. [/s]
You always are pathetic every time you type.... I pity you bcus denial would do you no good
Lmao. I don't lie when it comes to history of all things Im an ekiti man, you think i wouldn't kno how major ekiti cities were founded? Well being the dunce that you are, you would think bini founded all cities in West Africa
frankia: Look at them. Eko in Lagos is a bini terms if u must know. It means "resting camp" for d worriors dt faught nd conquered. Courtesy Oba Eware de great I.the Bini Kingdom conquered alot of cities even akure. Benin nd British kingdom are de only popularly known kingdom.
Eko also means Farm in the native Awori dialect. the bini camp was set up in modern day Enuwa, which is behind Idumota. the whole area used to be Farmlands for the Awori Idejo chiefs
so many times did Akure defeat bini in battle and force Bini troops back home
see illiterate. Abbysinia is not a popular kingdom? Netherland is not a popular kingdom(still existing), Denmark, Spain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, etc are all popular kingdoms
a typical bini ignoramus only knows Bini and Britain
fatiaforreal: That is the satellite picture of the wall, and the location is very obvious, very far from Benin. It's in Ijebuland, SW Nigeria. Benin was a great empire, but this post is just one of the many lies from our Bini brother.
A great kingdom, yes. but in the league of empires, Bini is nothing of glory.
An empire that could not spread its ethnic identity, its language, its culture? its land? oh please. Don't insult true empires
Dsov2016: Thunder fire u. Benin was an empire with the capital being the current benin city. It had controlled vast stretches of land up to benin republic and up to cameroon . in the 15th century, it fought to protect its northern borders against the fulanis (bringing this up so u can determine how far into the north its borders were) . around the 12th to 15th century the benin people moved its capital to its fortress city(benin). Unlike the other kings who bear oba, the benin had a system similar to the imperial roman empire with its system of several city states who pay allegiance and loyalty to one king the oba. If not for the useless British colonist, u would have known that during the mid 19th century to the of the punitive expedition the oba had sent his powerful warlords to ekiti to put down insurrection against the benin empire by (ogedengbe of illesha)people of ekiti extraction. It was these warlords Omumu who sacked Efon alaye and married the daughter to his son balogun asa(bor) . it was them who founded ado ekiti, igbara one, ilara, ogburugbura e.t.c . I know this because my great grandfather was the captain of the army and later became the main warlord. Pls stop saying nonsense u do not know before ur utterances awaken what u do not want. Have u ever being to benin, then u will know how large the walls we're. The signs of how big the Walls were can be seen from the moat which was excavated to build it. He Benin's fought but it was a short battle because of how surprising the attack came. Even with the surprise ask any body vast in history about asoro and they will tell u that though he fell, how many British soldiers he took with him with just bow and arrow and how it made people name a hill after him. Most of the benin u see today is modern construction because a cannon was fired into benin and benin of then was razed down by fire. O HOW I WOSH HISTORY WAS BEING TAUGHT SO OUR PEOPLE WILL NOT WALLOW IN THIS STUPID IGNORANCE. It is on record that the benin most and some existing fragments of the wall is a UNESCO heritage site
All lies. Bini and shameless lies
Ado-ekiti was founded as one of the original 16 crowned kingdoms in the late 13th century/early 14th century. It's origins go straight to Ife Bini never controlled Efon -Alaaye.
tdayof: Great Wall of China is 8,000km+ and Benin is 16,000km. So it's not 4 times the length of great wall of China.
Moreover, your pictures don't correlate and is there anything like "Benin empire"?
the bini people of this generation are liars.
the bini wall is not 16,000km.
a wall to cover the entire bini city cannot be longer than 1,500km
even If USA was to build a wall bewteen them and mexico, it wouldnt be up to 5,000km. and some mofos are saying a wall of 16,000km covers a small city like Bini
