Funnily enough, this thread was inspired by seeing Rita Dominic slide into a car wearing one pair of steel toe boots in a movie I'm currently watching lol I was thinking girl where do you think you're going?

Lol, there was a day I was rushing off work and forgot to change into my everyday shoes....my workplace then was kinda in the outskirts of the town so I had to drive on the highway for a while. I just noticed I was driving past the few cars I met on the road and was getting crazy stares. It was until a driver threw cuss words at me that I eventually figured out I was driving with my safety boots (steel toed boots)....omo, I no even feel am as I dey squeeze the gas pedal grin

I don't think there is any other thing that makes a man promise himself to never have sex again as much as taking an HIV test! Within that short time, you think of all possibilities and scenarios and just tell yourself firmly that your days of sex (or atleast unprotected sex) is over. You eventually pick the girl you love most and see yourself married to her in your mind...and go as far as telling yourself, you would start practicing your religion without fail!!!

Of course, all those last till two weeks after your test!!!! So bro, give yourself three weeks max....your life of debauchery will start again grin

Primary school here in Canada...

Secondary school back in Nigeria...

University back in Canada...

And they'll be staying with my mom... Lol... Not traveling back with anybody...

I want them to understand that there's lights out and data cap and nights where you drink garri to bed.

The few Africans I've met born here in Canada don't really have a clue... I turned out okay and I really pray my kids turn out okay as well... That is what I can't teach but I can influence...

Sometimes, I also think of sending my children to school in Nigeria at some point but then the questions I ask myself are: would I teach my children how to use typewriters? Would I be teaching them how to play VCRs? If I look on those things as archaic and unimportant to their development, then why do I want to teach them about my former life of bad roads, no stable power supply etc? What use would it add to them if they would be growing in an environment where knowledge of those things add no value to them?

PS: it's not like the youths they would be rolling with in Naija sef are morally better than those they would go to class with here.

I would just drop some points.

1. Never travel to any developed country without the right papers. If you do, be ready to struggle and hustle. You might get lucky and break through but the chances are slim.

2. Dont travel with the hope of making big money. The system was not designed like ours. Materialism is low and you can afford the basic necessities of life with your meager income (if you no do pass yourself). If your plan in life is to make big money and oppress others with it, Naija is the best bet for you.

3. Most of those who travel that I know, did because of their children and future generation. Be aware that the first line of immigrants dont break into the society. Some do but most live averagely....their children who are raised in the system tend to fare better though.

4. There is little or no power difference. If you are the type that wants to be called Oga, you are on your own o. You can be a manager and the carpenter under you would earn far more than you. So, before you abuse that your uncle who does menial work abroad...check how much he earns first grin

5. Be sure of what you are coming for. I tell my friends sometimes that I really cant see any material or financial change in my life after relocation but the fact is the immaterial things are more important....assurance of quality medical facility incase of emergency, security, access to clean air and water, electricity, zero noise pollution, predictability of traffic, emergency services, human dignity etc.

All in all, if anyone tells you not to leave Naija (the life-is-hard-abroad crew), na scam them dey scam you!!!!

Trash. In a bid to prove you learnt about strength of material in Engineering/technical class, you shot yourself in the foot.

Let's leave it as it is. Car safety crumple structure are made up of usually a minimum of 2 metallic alloys fused together either thru weldings, glue or other process tho under very carefully controlled environment

The most common metals used in crumple zones are aluminium, magnesium, light steel, boron steel, etc.

And o yes they can be welded using appropriate weld techniques.

Of course, I learnt MATERIAL SCIENCE in technical class. By the way, thanks for validating the same point I made; specially chosen welding processes and environment must be ensured.

AmuDimpka:

Is it a welding engineer that hasn't fabricated anything or panel beater that the work is visible

Lol, you must mistake me for one of the engineers you know in Nigeria.

I am not going to even try to explain myself to you. Continue welding everything as you seem fit...infact believe what your panelbeater tells you in contrast to what a welding engineer tells you cool

Bro, I usually dont come here to comment but I generally know you are an expert on cars. However, this your comment isnt entirely right. Any material scientist knows most cars are made of TRIP steel. These are steels that convert from Austenites to Martensites on impact. This also makes them generally not weldable as the materials change microstructure at the heat affected zones (except the welding is done under a carefully controlled process, which I wouldnt expect from almost any welder in Nigeria). The chances of this vehicle killing someone just increased due to the welding work done on the car. I know Nigerians generally weld cars...but believe me, that contributes highly to the death rate during collisions.

In short, the welding and subsequent mechanical work done on this car just rendered it unsafe for use.

Based on PMs I got from my last post, I’d like to clarify and explain how the Education/Loan system works according to my little experience. Please note, everything below is from personal exposure in Alberta and may not be 100% true for other provinces!

So obviously, the first thing to do is apply to a school. There are lots of schools around and preference can be based on field of study. E.g

-SAIT/NAIT for technical, business related and medical science courses
-Bow Valley College for Office management, Arts, Business related
-University of Calgary and University of Alberta for Bsc and Post-graduate
-Etc. Please avoid private colleges, it's not worth the tuition.

It is better to choose a course after adequate research (employment rate, entrance salary, job conditions etc). I know people who have gone to to school, finished and realized they wasted their time...and then start all over again, wasting money and precious years and sometimes accumulating over a hundred thousand dollars in student loan.

Minimum requirements for admission differ, could be a function of school / course. For instance, It’s SSCE for SAIT or in other cases you need Course by course evaluation.

Student Aid: There are two parts to this; student grant and student loan. Student grants are grants you dont have to pay back but you only qualify for them if you apply for student loan..student loan, you have to pay back in monthly installments six months after your studies. The tuition is paid directly to the school and balance paid to you. This balance is about 80% of living expense based on family size and its paid in lump sum.

E.g If your tuition and living expenses for a semester sums up to $10,000. Then tuition of eg $3000 is paid to the school and $7,000 sent to your account at the start of the semester. The percentage of this $10,000 that comes as grant depends on your family make-up, previous investment and family income (Those with children have upper hands here as they get more percentages of Grants)

So basically when you apply online, you would be asked to mail some documents and the school would be contacted to confirm your studentship before funds are dispersed.

Note: The requirement is, you must have been resident in the Alberta for 12months prior to applying. But if you are new to Canada and can prove that you have been resident in Alberta since your arrival in the country, you are eligible for the loan (you would need an ID card from Alberta to prove apply).

Another question is on how much you can combine with work. As a PR you dont have limitations on how many hours you are legally allowed to work. You can work to cover your basic living and keep the loan part of the money and refund once you are done with school and no longer require it. With weekend work and some sort of driving for small deliveries, you can make enough money to live within your means.

Hehehe... see where they all came to hide. grin

Hello everyone, my name is etrange and I'm a permanent resident of Canada.

I'm having a hard time choosing a city to reside in. I've got Montreal, Toronto and Calgary as my top choices. They say Montreal is good but too cold, Toronto is good but too expensive and Calgary is good but the economy is ailing thus the reduction in job opportunities. Me, I have PPR but confused.

First, you are not a permanent resident yet o grin

Deciding where to stay is really your choice but can you speak enough French to survive Montreal? Toronto is expensive and overcrowded in my opinion (GTA people, dont come for me oh) and Calgary is a really lowkey place with everything you need for life (Sorry, I'm biased)...economy is down but we survive.

Hi seniors, I will be landing in Alberta next year and I would love to choose a new career path. I have been a class room teacher for the past 3 years. I studied English for my first degree then Peace and Strategic studies for my masters. My experience and degrees in the best of my knowledge can't land me any good paying job in Canada. So I'm wondering if you all could suggest an high paying diploma course, certifications or trade work that is in high demand that I can quickly study for.
Thanks

Being a teacher won't be a good paying job in Canada? Please do your research and see how to get certified to teach here, you would be surprised what you find. You would just have to take a few courses and you would be very fine. If the planned province for you is Alberta, try to go through their website on Teacher Certification (don't know if posting links is accepted here). The issue I have seen people face is getting their qualification transferred from the Education Board in Nigeria and since you are still there, I suggest you take advantage of that and get all the required sorting-out done.

Please do your research and decide before leaving Nigeria, it can be hard to get papers sorted from here...and please dont ask me further questions oh, I am not a teacher and cant give detailed explanations.

I'm paying $6000 as tuition this session in school while my class mates who are international students pay $20,000+...the difference in fees for a year alone would cover the EE process (just saying....walks out)

PS: Canada govt grant pays off almost 90% of this amount and it's like I'm not paying for anything, by the way!

as for me I just have a question, pls if u travel to canada using a visiting/tourist visa, I understand u need to have a resident permit to get a job there, but my question is after like 2 years of living there can't u apply for this permanent resident of a thing while already there...?, 2. wouldn't it be much more easier that way rather than doing the Express entry from Nigeria.....

I need help with those questions thanks.......

I normally don't answer questions on threads like this but something tells me you genuinely want to know so I would reply you.

1. Don't come to Canada if you arent coming with genuine papers and legal documents. It would be hell.

2. If you come in with tourist visa, you can practically do nothing in this country. You can't get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) with that visa so you cant open a bank account, get a SIM card etc only to talk of getting a job.

3. You always mostly can never convert to work permit. It has been known to happen but it's rare and hard. You could do some underG work and get paid cash but believe me, you would be better off living in Naija.

4. If you could get a work permit, excellent! It's always hard to get sha. Canada is a hard country to get into except you are coming as a permanent resident.

5. If you do get a work permit and you are here, you could
a. Go to school and use that to gain points for express entry
b. Get your employer to give you what is called LMIA and that raises your point for express entry too.

However, Canada is sweet basically for PRs and Citizens. If you come in as anything else, na your money we go dey take drink tea and plant flowers. Life is sweet here for those who are here legally, no let anybody lie you say things are hard abroad...its a million times better than back home!!!

PS: Don't ever let any agent decieve you. The best way to travel abroad is by doing it yourself. Read, read and read...the information is always online. Reddit, Quora, Canadavisa forum and our own very Nairaland...other countries' infos can be found online too. DIY...AGENTS ARE SCAMS!!!!!!

BaaleOko:
Contrary to the overused stereotype bandied by ignorant people back home that all Nigerians based abroad do is menial jobs, IT'S NOT ALL NIGERIANS THAT ENGAGE IN MENIAL JOBS ABROAD. At least I can speak for the Nigerian demography here in the USA where I stay... we have LOTS of Nigerian doctors, pharmacists, Lawyers, Engineers, IT guru's etc doing very well in their respective professions here(we are abundantly represented at and in all levels of American labor) . While it is true that some Nigerians especially when they first come abroad engage in menial jobs to survive(and trust me the concept of dignity in labor is respected in developed countries like the USA, Canada, and some parts of Europe)where there's absolutely no shame in doing menial jobs, these Nigerians who start up with under the table low paying jobs due to paper issues, they still go on in few years to go to school and acquire degrees in good paying career fields(you can't take away ambition and goal from a Nigerian)... there's a reason why Nigerians are the most educated demography in America today. I've met Nigerian doctors, lawyers, business managers/owners etc today who were once security guards, cleaners, Cab drivers etc once. And for context, Most doctors in Nigeria don't even gross half the yearly income of a Cab driver in the USA!
