@Naijaking don't kid urself, the bank is not a small subsector in d fight against corruption in nigeria. If we tackle 60% of d corruption in our bankin system d overall effect on d national economy wld be close to 90% because d major corrupt acts in dis country be it customs, ministries politicians u name it, goes thru d banks nd because of their lack of due process nd corporate governance they aid and abet all this corrupt acts.

B4 Sanusi came onboard, I was workin with IBplc there was already apprehension abt d future of our bank, top management were visibly scared, we had stopped givin out loans as we used to do, at a point Akingbola the CIBN president at dat time scrapped internal control in d branches nd moved most of them 2 marketing, so what exactly are u guys talkin abt.

Sanusi has 5yrs to serve he is yet 2 finish one and he has saved at least IBplc, that I know 4 a fact so ynot allow him finish his term and then judge him.

You are very correct also take note that in our fight against corruption Lawyers have become the ultimate beneficiaries, we should work out a policy that should sanction lawyers if their clients are finally found guilty with the possibility of the lawyer losing his assets or the lawyer personally bearing the cost of the prosecution especially if he had to make the govt go thru a lot of interlocutory applications.

This article has indeed put corruption in the proper perspective, like in the case of corruptorich corp if the project was easy he cld have gone ahead to complete and make beautiful profits and still share to the council officials as a gift or appreciation which may not be taken for bribes.

The biggest problem here in Nigeria is the outright stealing, thats why people like Ibori can and should be dealt with without following any rules because in their corrupt acts they followed no rules, but at the end of the day you realise that u cant solve corruption with corruption just like two wrongs dont make anything right.

This brings me to Yaraduas modus operandi in fighting crime, his idea is that if u must fight corruption you must fight it in a transparent manner, he was trying to lay a foundation for an institutionalised way to fighting corruption, that means he doesnt directly or indirectly interfer in the prosecution as could be seen in the Iboris case when he was alive, even Alams told us that Yaradua told him give them what you want I will give you Pardon, that is where his power is!!! not shielding anyone from trial Ibori went to court and insisted that his trial be moved to delta where the crimes were supposed to have been commited he won that and went ahead and got a favor from his chief judge friend and how do u blame him for that now EFCc has d right and power to appeal and the truth be said Ibori may not have the powers to promise any Judge anything anymore.

If we must solve corruption we need to bring it into the right perspective, Obj was corrupt because the system allowed him to, the cabal under Yaradua was corrupt because d system allows them to and Jonathan could end up corrupt because of the system. We should actually define corruption, If an officer takes his time and does his job searching all necessary papers of my vehicle and does not find me wanting and asks me Sir what do u have for your boys and I give him 500 naira can that be said to be a corrupt act, what if my licence expired 2 days ago and I plead with him to let me go that i would renew it by next week because of my busy schedule and give him 1000 naira for his understanding would that be hurting the system and should it be classified the same as failing to search a suspected vehicle by just collecting 1000 naira or finding guns in a vehicle and deciding to settle?

Its very true a lot of people have comprehension problem or what has Aganga said that Sanusi had not said already. I hate it when people just become ethnically bias, Aganga said we can grow the economy in double digits and even be ahead of India and Brazil and they hail him but when Sanusi said our economy can be larger than South Africas they all ran to the market insulting the man.

On the banking sector now, there have been complaints that the actions that have been taken, so far, by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, are slowing down the economy. What is your view on this?

It depends on who you speak to and what you understand reforms to be. If we ask, were the reforms necessary? I will say yes. Every country has gone through the same process. Every major international financial sector has gone through it. The most important thing is to have a stronger, better and stable financial sector that will emerge from the process. However, unfortunately, there are some unintended consequences. There will be job losses; there will be loss of confidence in the financial sector; there may be a strong level of uncertainty. That is where the CBN Governor, the Minister of Finance and the Executive have a responsibility to make sure that we get the right balance.

One point I will like to make, however, is that people talk so much about the bad banks all the time, but they forget that there are about 14 strong, safe and stable banks in the country. We don't talk enough about those banks. We must help the banks to meet both their social and economic responsibilities to the society. We have a duty to build that confidence because the banking sector is crucial to the economic growth of any country.


He said the reforms were necessary, other countries have gone thru the same thing and that the financial sector would come out stronger, the consequences are unintentional and he went ahead to specify that the CBN governor, The Minister of finance and the entire Executive Council have a responsibility, so what has he said that shows Sanusi to have been wrong.

Northern Elders Assembly moves to stop Jonathan

A pan- Northern pressure group, Northern Elders Assembly, has expressed disgust over attempts to circumvent the principle of zoning and power rotation entered into by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the ploy is unjustifiable and a contravention of the spirit of the arrangement for power to reside in Northern Nigeria for eight years.

The Assembly in a meeting in Abuja, last week, urged all Northerners, irrespective of party or political affiliations, to come together and present a united front in defending the right of the region to produce the next president of Nigeria in line with the arrangement already in place as the Southern part of the country had already had its turn.

In a communiqué, signed by a former minister during the regime of General Sani Abacha, Alhaji Bashir Mohammed Dalhatu and released in Kano on Sunday, the Assembly said it was ironic that the North was being shortchanged by the people it was trying to assist given that, “Zoning and rotation formula was an innovation that originated from the North in order to make it possible for the minority elements, particularly, from  the South to be able to access power at the highest level in the political equation in Nigeria.”

The meeting chaired by a First Republic Acting Prime Minister, Alhaji Inuwa Wada had in attendance Northern elders such as Alhaji Bello Kirfi, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, Hajiya Laila Dogon Yaro, Alhaji Umaru Baba, Senator Abubakar Mahdi,  Alhaji Zangon Daura, among others.
The Assembly appealed to their respective state governors in the North “to demonstrate exemplary leadership in this crusade and replicate the selfless and heroic sacrifices made by some of their predecessors against Obasanjo’s attempt to elongate his tenure.”  

The Assembly also objected to the way and manner the immediate past chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor was forced to resign his position simply because he insisted on the adherence to the party’s zoning arrangement.
The Assembly equally frowned at the appointments made by President Goodluck Jonathan in the Ministry of Petroleum and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, saying they clearly amount to a violation of the Constitution he swore only recently to uphold. 

In particular, they complained bitterly about the changes made in those outfits since the coming of the new administration, noting that, “out of the 20 officials of the ministry, 10 are from the South-South geo political zone, the area where the President comes from, with the whole of the North having only four, while the South-East and the South-West have two each.”
The group said it would, therefore, send a high-level protest delegation to the President of the Senate and would also meet with the Northern caucuses in the both chambers of National Assembly to make a case against the emergence of those negative tendencies which, the leaders said, were capable of affecting the political stability of the country.

The assembly also planned to set up three different delegations, one per geopolitical zone within the North, to visit state governors, traditional rulers, religious and cultural bodies to brief them on the recent developments.
Also disturbing to the Northern Elders Assembly is the “overwhelming and overbearing influence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo over President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration,” as the group argued that the presence of the former president would make it difficult for the administration to successfully fight corruption.

“It is clearly obvious that most Nigerians believe that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is himself, a strong suspect of corruption charges, which still remains to be investigated,” they concluded.

2. there is a difference between the economy and the financial system, the cbn as a regulator and the finance ministry. the cbn is a regulator of the financial system and not the economy. to evaluate an economy, the macroeconomic objectives to look at are
a. economic growth
b. redistribution of income
c. full employment
d. price stability
e. favourable balance of payment

of all these, the only part where the cbn plays a role is price stability. cbn responsibility is to ensure price stability. so really, if the cbn would take any blame whatsoever on the economy, it should be on price stability and going by the statistics, the cbn has done well in this regard. inflation rate is now 11.8 down from 12.3. other issues should be directed at the relevant government structures. for example, for the economy to work, we need the real sector which depends on power. is it cbn that will provide the power and other infrastructures? is it cbn that will control how much importation that we do compared to exportation? common guys, lets talk to the right guys on our economy and that is the finance minister and the government as a whole.

3. people also talk about lack of confidence in the economy, the truth is that before the reforms we had no confidence in ourselves, the international financial institution had no confidence in us, even the banks were doing backstabbing on themselves to market saying this or that bank in distressed. but now what do we have? we all know that our money is safe. we know the nature of the problems of the banks. some of the banks are even back to profitability. the capital market has grown by about 30%. the international credit line is back for the banks. and i still wonder, they say sanusi has destroyed the confidence. nay! sanusi has restored the confidence.

4. please dont be fooled by what you read in some of our dailies. it would be better if the names of those papers are changed to reflect what they really are now. they are no more better that city people, encomium, spectacle etc you know, they have all become soft sell. you would read about the banks not lending to people anymore because of sanusi's reform. if they want to make sense, let them publish the figures of bank lending and to who the loans go to before the reforms and figures and to who now. i bet you, if you see the figures, you will throw eggs at any of these bankers when you see one. the truth is, they have not been lending to the real sector. not to any body that wants to do real economic business. what they have been doing is gambling with their shareholders fund. i work in a stock broking firm so i can tell you it was soooooo bad. the banks were doing handbill to advertise that people should come and borrow to buy shares. they used these funds to buy their own public offers. one stock broker alone has a debt of about 90 billion naira. imagine the number of industries that could have financed.
somebody talked about importation of cars coming down. why will it not come down, when it was the banks that were financing the purchase of these cars. if you earn about 90,000 a month you can buy a car of about 2 million. all you have to do is pay 25,000 naira every month. i am sure a lot you guys outside nigeria dont know what has been going on. they were financing buying of generators, television etc adverts were aired on tv and radio. i am sure that you would not be surprised if i tell you that they equally financed political campaigns.
the other areas they were pumping money is aviation and importation of petrol so when the meltdown happened in 2008 and oil price came down, they lost a huge chunk of there fund. a lot of bad things happened then. 

5. its really a painful one for those who lost their job. but lets put the cards on the table. do you know why the banks employed so much people in the first place? we most be frank on this one. the banks were engaging in a competition for the number of branches they have. imagine a situation where on ogudu road for instance, you will find all banks represented. now you wonder, is there so much fund in a residential area that all these banks have to be here to get a share. and check out the size of these buildings. you will wonder if these new branches can survive on their own. the crux of the matter is unhealthy competition. so when the bubble burst, each branch was mandated to work on sustaining itself. that is the ‘koko’ of the job loss in the banking sector. mind you it was not sanusi that said sack your staff. it was the decision of the banks and let me inform us that these sacks had been going on since 2008. only the large scale execution took place sometimes ago. you know what the banks do now, they employ ond holders and pay them 30- 40k even lower to get there clerical jobs done. well, they will say they are being prudent, it is unfortunate though.

its important that we all support what is good and give good advice on better ways to do it. what we should not do is castigate someone who wants to do a good job because of our sentiments particularly when we do not have the facts.

the situation in nigeria require that we always seek the facts and figures before we let some foolish thieves and criminals bamboozle us

Yes the political parties are too much and rily nid to be curtailed, but u don't have to force them to come together, the first port of call would have bin 2 scrap all SIECs nd have INEC conduct all elections, secondly all political parties are allowed to contest @ d local govt levels 4 councillor nd Chairmanship position, but wen it comes to d govnor nd state house of assembly only parties that were able to win say 20% of d available positions would be qualified to contest in d govnorship nd state assemblies elections, then 4 d federal elections 4 a party 2 contest it must hav produced at least a governor in each geopolitical zone in d country to field a presidential candidate nd for any party to field senatorial candidates must at least have won seats in d state assembly, with this kind of arrangement u won't tell any party b4 they start consolidatin and then the real politics will begin. But what do the (dis)honourable members kno oda than to increase their salaries nd harass MDAs for oversight fundin, clueless thieves.

I cant believe that all anti Sanusi members have avoided commenting on this thread, Jonathan sure knows how to move, Nigeria needs more Sanusis in other sector of the economy, can we imagine what impact a reform like his would achieve in the petroleum industry, or power sector of this country.


I dont know why people can not see others in the light of what they are, Sanusi is nobodys apologist and does not involve in bribe taking eventhough he is a muslim but a lot of "christian CEOs" were taking bribes or cuts in loan deals they were giving in their banks going ahead with such dirty money and donating it to churches.

This is a brilliant way to start your campaign even though majority of us here may not be from Bayelsa or ur constituency but if we all bring worthwhile suggestions, and encouragement it would go a long way in building a new order. Most people dont realise that this office you have chosen to run for is very critical infact more critical than the office of the President or Governors.

I will be watching out for you on this forum and when the time is right even if its only N1,000.00 I am able to contribute I would gladly contribute to your campaign and would be prepared to mobilise from wherever I am to campaign with you without any compensation.

If truly the youths want a bright future, they must be a part of creating that future and they cant be a part of it if they cant play the politics, so no matter what it takes "BE PREPARED".

Akunyili is well known for her ability to seperate her personal interests from national assignments has she has shown in NAFDAC and as Minister of Information.

Giving her the job is not entirely a bad idea, even though there are other people who can also do the job, the issue would be that she would have to quit the PDP and after that she can handle her job properly.
