Damn, safety is not considered something to engage in in Nigeria. Most electrical technicians don't believe in using insulating tape on exposed naked wire. This freaking tape costs N100 each, yet exposed cables are left that way! Even some kazeen auto electricians uses polythene bags to tie around exposed naked wire! If the car suddenly goes up in flames the village people are said to be the cause! Safety is often played with because no one pays the cost in the event of an accident.


In 1992, 79-year-old Stella Liebeck spilled a cup of McDonald’s coffee on her lap and suffered third-degree burns on her legs and her groin area. The burns required extensive skin grafts and eight hospital stays and resulted in $18,000 worth of lost income and medical bills.

She sued McDonald’s for the $20,000 but the company came back with an insulting offer of just $800. Liebeck hired an attorney and ended up winning $160,000 in compensatory damages and $480,000 in punitive damages.

Firstly, the fact that the BMS LVD feature always sets in implies that the battery is experiencing some abuse from the user. For your pal, by the time the BMS LVD triggers, battery voltage is likely at 21.6v (2.7v per cell). It is better not to run in below 24v or at worst 23.8v (2.7v per cell). That way, he may be able to get a high cycle of use at that DoD. Note that even at that his 21.6v DoD, he may still be able to get some 6 years of use, but with 24v he nears some 10 years. Ditto increased years for DoD greater than 24v. Frequently deep discharging the LFP will make the cells to quickly get out of balance even though a BMS is present and the long term effect of that if not corrected is that some cells in the pack get stressed more than the others, them rapid degeneration.

BMS trips at 25v. Battery may be a little undersized for the project.

Secondly, there are LFP assemblers that give the option of installing a switch on the enclosure that you can press to do the reset. But if you choose that option, you risk losing the warranty on the pack because to that assembler, that means potential abuse which voids warranty.

A switch involves someone being physically present at location. A situation which is unfortunate as that can't happen.

Thirdly, your friend has another option of waking up the BMS - charging with generator. Solar input may not push in enough initial current to kick-start the BMS, but an external AC charger will surely do.

Strictly off-grid project. No gen in location nor any plans to put one in yet.

Finally, that battery should not be habitually discharged below 24v to get your max cycle of use outta it. He can get an external LVD device to control the battery output to the inverter or if he can afford, get an extra LFP type to share the work with the existing one (connected in parallel).

Who can help my friend solve this problem? He has an LFP with 24v 60A Daly BMS common port. The problem is that whenever the LVD is triggered, it does not automatically reset when charge flows from PV (say the next morning when the sun comes up) unless manually bypassed. By manual bypass I mean using a short cable to connect to the battery's negative and to the point where the BMS solar charge controller negative and inverter terminal battery negative meets, in simple terms replacing the BMS with a short wire. Is there a way to make this automatic? For instance in a remote site, it is expected that the inverter comes up by itself (if it the batteries drain at night) the next morning when the sun comes up. But this behaviour will make such a scenario not play out.

The experience wasn't funny. I was jejely enjoying the current overflow, the next thing I started perceiving the smell of burning rubber! I quickly rushed to the setup and noticed the BMS has started to melt..had to quickly turn off one source of charge. Funny enough BMS is still good

Depends on the spec of the battery. Some battery can take 1C charge. So if the 200AH is such battery then you don't have a problem. As for the 100AH, that 160A definitely doesn't look good. So in that case, you'll have to make do with either one of the source charging it...either PV or inverter. So that means during the day, you can always switch off the power input into the inverter and run on only solar. At night you can put it back on. Just remember to turn it off in the morning

I think in such instance, what the BMS does is to shut down (activate overcurrent protection) rather than burn out.

The leads of a BMS are often rated according to the charging current capability. Eg if you have a 50A BMS and you push 120A through it, the lead wires will most likely melt or even the BMS enclosure itself! This is because the cooling factors may obviously not be in place for that high current capacity. I've experienced this.

Yes but that should only the applied with small banks else one may use one kidney to buy BMS , if you have a over 400AH bank then you don't have to look for a 400AH BMS because the reality is that you won't generate or consume up to that amount of current instantaneously. So for 150AH and above a 100A BMS is fine. If you get higher at a good deal, all well and good

Well, I think I should have worded it this way choose a BMS based on both your battery and your inverter/PV's charging current capability

Please house, just to be sure, is a BMS current rating supposed to be the same as that of CC or lesser or there is a particular recommended value.

Chose BMS based on the battery in use. Eg if you buy an 100AH LFP that can do a 1C charge ie 100A, you are better off getting a 100A BMS. This BMS can work with a 60A SCC. So if your PV supplies 60A and your inverter charger supplies 30A, the BMS can handle that. But if you buy a 50A BMS and your PV supplies 60A and charger 30A, the BMS will burn out leaving your battery charging/discharging and management unregulated.

Another instance if your battery can only take 50A, buying a 60A BMS is advised, so if the charging exceeds 60A, the BMS should be able to cut it off saving your battery from being overcharged.

I have 6 units of 275W panels, Rated voltage 30.9V, Rated current 8.91A, VOC 38.8V, SCC 9.47A and Max system voltage 1000V with two different CC 12/24/60A VMax is 70V, while the other is 24/48/40A Vmax 100V. Which of the controller is the best to handle 6 panels and at what configuration of the array, 2S3p or 3S2P?

Just like the person above stated, I'll do the same. The thing is whichever CC you chose out of the two you are theoretically going to lose some power out of the six 275 solar panels.

@ house, my 4yr old luminous FLA, have started need frequent watering, before it could go 4 to 8wks b4 needing water, now its about 2 to 4wks. And some cells need more water than others....sg readings are fairly same, apart from a few rougue cells. Ie out of the 6 cells in a battery, 1 or 2 may need 70cl of water.. another 2 cells 30cl, and the rest needing only 10cl.

My inverter charge setpoints are 14.5 for absorb and 13.8v for float, same for the CC that i introduced 4 wks ago.

Lil research on the web , say as fla batts age, they need more watering, but mine appears to be on the extreme.
Am thinking of reducing the absorb & float voltage to 14.1v and 13.6v respectively.

I know am 1 of the few sturbborn peeps still using FLA in this time of Lipo4 batts and all, but if you got any tips from your fla days, kindly help me.

Introduction:
The SARS brutality is getting out of hand and it seems the government is getting clueless by the day in finding a lasting solution to the constant killings by these blood sucking demons called SARS.

Nigeria is a nation where conventional solutions always seems ineffective because of the corrupt nature of almost all agencies of government. No matter what the leadership does, these agencies will always find a way to maneuver their way and commit atrocities. Hence we need to solve this problem using a more rugged approach.

Scenario:
- Police DPOs are always informed anytime their officers are going for a raid. (Probably 75% of the time).
- Infact internal sources claimed that the DPOs sometimes set daily/weekly target for officers to meet.
- The officers get back to the station and remit a certain percentage of their loot to the DPOs daily/weekly.
- The DPOs in-turn remit a certain percentage to the commissioners & other leads on top of the hierarchy.
- Possibly, the leadership in Abuja might be part of this looting network too (assumption).

Judging from the above scenario, it will be absurd for the government to think the police head will be able to solve this police brutality on their own coz they are all guilty from top to bottom.

Proposed Solution:
- A Rep should sponsor a bill to establish a separate disciplinarian (trial) court with sole responsibility of trying cases of extortion & police brutality in the police force. (The body constitution may include the police, judiciary, etc).
- The president should assent to the bill and make it a law.
- Make a law that ALL the officers that partakes in a raid of extortion be sacked within 4 weeks (Investigation period)
- Most local police raiding guys are familiar faces. Their offices are known by people in the locality.
- The FSARS guys too can be identified with at least something. (An assumption)
- Since the DPOs most times know about their officers going out for raids, make a law that any DPO whose officer engages in a raid of extortion be either relocated to another state or he should be demoted to a regular officer. (Give them grace of three occurrences and issue warning at every instance).

Conclusion:
In my own theory, it is better to go after the top guys when trying to solve a menace coz when you shake the top, the lower cadre will fall in line. If the DPOs are held responsible for the actions of their officers, they will make sure their officers are kept in check.

This is just me thinking out loud!

I am planning my house and intend to use solar panels on the roof. Now I have some grey areas to resolve.
1. Do i need a special roofing reinforcement to accommodate the solar panels?
2. Should I have two distribution circuits- one for the solar, another for phcn? This means i will have designated sockets/lighting points for solar and phcn all over the house.

1: Just make sure the roof no too slope. The best angle is an almost flat surface (for Naija) for overall better performance throughout the year. But if it's a high pitched roofs of up to and over 48 degrees, you should consider a professional roof mount with a tilt leg to put the panel at this almost horizontal angle for optimum yield.


2. Incorporating a renewable energy only DB is an awesome adventure to embark on. This truly makes the addition of an inverter almost seamless. Also you'll never run into a condition that your inverter is forced to power an equipment you don't want to run on it. This is why banks and other firms have a dedicated "UPS DB" to cater for loads such as PC, printers, etc that needs to be always on in the event of a power changeover or failure. So I'll recommend you go for it.

Presently we have fully tested the 38120 cells and Nissan Leaf batteries, both without BMS for now. The 38120 were disappointing to say the least. Suspecting there might be some weak cells among them but no proper equipment to carry out the required tests yet.

The Nissan Leaf did okay for a short test but had to put it off as no way to charge it yet. The Victron charger is not yet configured for Lithium ion batteries. Seeing solar depot have the Mk3-usb connect for the configuration but the pepper is not here oo. Abeg if anybody get one wey I fit borrow just configure the charger I will return back immediately.

MPP GK back online with a few redress, 3 things I noticed straight up.

1. MPPT efficiency is way better than the felicity I was using temporarily. Now it's just less than 2A difference between charge current reading from MPP and BMV as against 5A on felicity.

2. MPP also seem to support more battery option on 3kva GK such as the pylontech.

3. Fan noise is way more silent, it feels like there is an improvement with the new board

It depends on the battery type and make. Is the output voltage of your SCC adjustable?

Please I'm a Newbie in this inverter thing...i need help with one or two issues I'm facing.

I had an inverter and 200ah battery installed in my apartment about 5months ago. Initially performance was 7hrs now it barely lasts upto 2hrs. I want to continue with this alternative power thing as I've had my fill of using generators but this is discouraging.

1. Please I need a battery/inverter "Load Chart Guide"

2. Any solutions,/ recommendations on a better quality battery are very welcome

I have some questions to make troubleshooting easier.

1) Did you buy the battery new?

2) What is the total load (total device power) connected to the inverter?

3) Do you have any idea the maximum charging current and voltage of the inverter? Do you know the cut off voltage of this inverter? That is the lowest voltage that it cuts off the battery?

4) Do you usually run the inverter with NEPA or generator? If generator, do you have any idea the frequency produced by this generator? If NEPA, do you experience low voltage a lot in your 'hood?

You should at least be able to get 10A out of it, if the 15A is an over-declaration.

The first one has the features that I want. The latter is too complex for the application I want when compared to the former. I can only hope it can survive an air-conditioner constantly plugged in. Chinese and their fake specification are like 5&6. I see the 15A rating, but can it really survive that current is another story. This one you are using the alternate, have the bot bandit struck again?
