Check this list first before you waste money and time and get a degree but your qualification is only good for picking thrash and litters. This is from a compilation put together to alert residents of Texas in US. If it's good information for them, it's a crucial alert for Nigerians.

grin @AlderFadington & Imperial Yoruba. You guys are funny. grin

Imperial, is there something you know that connects Hausa elsewhere beside Hausaland? Beside, are you Imperial Hausa or Imperial Yoruba? grin grin grin Leave people alone to their own beliefs.

Hati, I agree, culture is dynamic and the present owes its glory to the past. In the trinity of past, present and future we can reflect upon the divinity of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. In Yoruba, in symbolism only, it should be the spirit of Egungun, Ogboni and Oro.

To the OP, and in direct input to the topic...
I believe Yoruba can be sub-divided into two. The native and the settler. There were indigenous people on everyland in Nigeria, and there are settlers on everyland in Nigeria.

In the South there is a people called Ugbo in Yoruba (Igbo in East), they covered the whole Forest area from West to East. When settlers arrived in their midst they grew apart.

Those who settled West into the Ugboland are foreigners called Yorubas. Those who settled East into Igboland are also from a foreign land. It is not my position to talk about their origin. The mid-region between West and East were also settled by the Edos, Urhobos, Idomas, Ijaws and so on. I cannot talk for these people origin either. I can only share knowledge about mine - Yoruba.

To the North of the Ugbo aborigines you have the Noks. Noks cover the River Basins and the Plateau.

This is what they put up for the photoshoot, this is hunting gun. You don't need AK47 or high caliber assault rifle to hunt animal. In the field of defense, which is what the Governor called them to do, they have other grade weapons that they have mischieviously kept out of view. You don't show your enemy your power.

Thanks OP for the openess and admission. For me the above line from your points is the bottom line.

Nigerians need to place foreign countries into Tiers. They call themselves developed countries, but there are tiers of development and some of these developed countries are worse in their socio-poilitial relations and exchanges with migrants. Foreign countries should be categorized into 1st Tier, 2nd Tier and 3rd Tier in attribute to their social programmes and treatment of migrant class.
Culture › Re: Top 10 Yoruba Names You Never Guessed Were Arabic Names by MetaPhysical: 9:20pm On Jan 10, 2018
In case women reading this feel left out by the concentration on Male gender, the evolution and domestication of Islam in Yorubaland were made possible by both genders. Yoruba Muslim women however played a cultural role, while the men led the Politico-Social integration.

In addition to female names that were also cryppted, there is a genre of music in Yorubaland called "Seli". Seli derived from Arabic word "Salli", taken from the praise word ......Allahuma Salli Ala Sayyidina Muhammaddin, which when translated means "Oh Allah, Exalt our Prophet Muhammad". In cultural rituals like naming ceremony, wedding and festivals Yoruba Muslim Women will sing "Seli" in Yoruba language to exalt and hype the mood. Seli is to Yoruba Muslim women what Were is to their men counterpart.....it served a religious function but in a Yoruba context interwoven with Yoruba tradition and culture.

In the area of naming, unlike the male version, the female names are not that far away from their original in spelling or pronounciation.

Maryam becomes Mero or Moria
Aisha becomes Ayi
Fauzia becomes Fausa
Zahra becomes Sariu or Sariyu
Culture › Re: Top 10 Yoruba Names You Never Guessed Were Arabic Names by MetaPhysical:
This is a very good subject to discuss and the underlying cause that Yorubanized Arab and Semitic sounding names has many parts to it but I will focus my input acutely on why Arab names were Yorubanized and exclude the other aspect out of this discussion, at least for now.

The proper term to use is "Domestication of Islam" because it extends beyond just names. There are many practices that is unique to Yoruba Muslims and cannot be found practised in any other Muslim society outside Yorubaland. If I go into these I will derail this nice thread, so not today.

For those familiar you have heard Yoruba Muslims say Ile-Kewu, Mosalasi, Woli, Malim. Mosalasi is foreign, every other one is authentic Yoruba.

Ile Kewu - A class for learning how to read Quran. What is Kewu? Not to be discussed today....

Mosalasi - A temple for ritual prayer, borrowed from Hausa's "Masallaci". Arabs call it Masjid. Not for today......

Woli - Arabs call it Wali. Not here....

Malim - Called Mallam in North. It means Enlightenement, which Yoruba call Imole. Skip this.....

Again, if an unbiased study and research is done on Yoruba traditional religion and worship itself many discoveries will be unveiled that closes the gap between Yoruba and Semitic. One culture is the root for the other, the direction of the uproot and migration is very contentious and I do not intend to go into it here on this thread.

I have many disclaimers I can list but believe the above is enough.

Is Talabi Yoruba, or a modifier for Muttalab?

Western education in Yorubaland came with Christian evangelism and you will not be enrolled in school until you have first accepted Jesus and baptism. The coincidence of tutoring in English language, Public exchange in English language and adoption of English names helped to preserve and save Christian names from a similar domestication that we see of Arabic names amongst Yoruba Muslims. Otherwise names such as Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Deborah, Michael and so on would be far away from their original in spelling and pronounciation.

Actually, the arrival of Christian evangelism in Yorubaland helped greatly in the need by Yoruba parents to encrypt names and save their children from conversion in schools. The white missionaries and colonialists had no clue, and while they will not enroll Abdul Fattah, they will not object to Fatai starting school right away.

Abdul Hadi became Liadi
Mohammed became Momoh
Abdul Jabbar became Abbari
Abdul Galil became Ligali.

This is how Yoruba Muslims outwitted English Evangelists to get their children educated without conversion of faith. Since the names on enrollment was recorded in official registers, it was printed on certificates and other documents......the crypted, domesticated names thus entered into our writing and stuck as spellings and pronounciations for Yoruba Muslim names.

it is time for us to tell ourselves the truth and stop whipping sentiment or politicking for gain favour to cover the truth. Herdsmen as people who not just graze cattle but provide security for them.most of the cattles does not belong to them but they're employed to tend for these animals. all herdsmen are well trained security wise for secure these animals, herds men are more of security oriented than farmer. herdsmen have tough survival instinct, they move distance,in hot and cold weather, sleep amongs their animals, move day till in the jungle, have different psychology from normal. They may not necessary have intention to look for trouble as the primary is to feed, tend and do their security job for their animals, however because of communication barriers and sufficient education&information, they tend to encroach into area they not supposed to enter, and when members of such community yell at them to take their cattle away, most times they feel offended. it is a long standing issue, and sometimes it snowball to conflict.so don't tell us some are killer herdsmen, making it look like others are non-killer herdsmen, all herdsmen have killer instinct because the basic criteria that qualfies a fulani to move around with cattle is the ability to secure them, at worst with extreme measure. so when you have issue with cattle herders they will always unleash terror as they are trained to be.

mandarin:
Nigeria is a design of the British such that it will continue to give them the leverage of control. For as long as the southern ethnic groups won't come together even if in pretence but for economic and political emancipation the story may be far from over in another 50years except something drastic happens.
If the South comes together and the togetherness collapses, which more than likley will happen, the residual outcome will be a political stalemate worse than anything in the current structure of individuality. True, two heads are better than one but there are exceptions in which one head acting alone far surpasses any promises of gain hoped for in a merge with a second or multiple heads. Particularly lets study the options for a merge in South. Who is merging with who, or who and who are coming together?

Remember West was the whole area to Asaba. There was a referendum and the people chosed to be separated from West and to remain independent. Just few months ago everywhere Kanu turned and labeled as part of Biafra rejected the inclusion, even when prospects were high and looked like his bid might succeed. The rejection is a vote of no confidence on Igbo. Why is everyone dissociating from Igbo? It's because they are known to be a political risk.

So you have midWesterners that say they dont want Yoruba and you have midWesterners that say they dont want Igbo. Beside this you also have Igbo penchant for competing with Yoruba for control over Lagos. So any unity in South will be short lived and ultimately blow up into a worse drama than what we have here currently. This is why I believe the so called Handshake across the Niger between Afenifere Renewal Group (not the authentic Afenifere led by Fasoranti) and Ohanaeze is a partisan political alliance to prop PDP for defeat of APC. ARG are acting in self interest, not in interest of Yoruba. Ohanaeze on the other hand has no credibility left and is looking for anything, from anyone to help recover and not become a joke like MASSOB.

Lets drop any dream of unity across South, it will be a disaster if it were forced.

In the West the grant of Regional self-government has on balance been justified. The Action Group Government, led by the Premier, Chief Awolowo, have proved reasonable and competent administrators and, although with the steady run-down of the cadre of overseas officers (Colonial Officers in West) there is bound to be some decline in standards of administration, the advanced educational programme of the Region should in time provide sufficient replacements. The Premier aspires to national leadership and has to this end formed a close alliance with the principal Opposition elements in the North and East.

In the East government has seriously run down. Dr. Azikiwe (“ Zik “), leader of the N.C.N.C. remains in power as the personification of Ibo tribalism, but his chronic unwillingness to tolerate around him men of independence of mind has brought into being a Regional Executive Council, almost all of whom are nonentities. Some of the Federal Ministers drawn from his Party, notably Dr. Mbadiwe, have recently lost their posts through constant but so far ineffective warfare against his personal dictatorship of party affairs. His star may be on the wane. At present he has no serious rival as leader of the Ibos, who are much the largest race in the Region, and although it would be much healthier for Nigeria if his hand were removed from the helm, the time has passed when Her Majesty’s Government could take any effective action to hasten this process. He must be left to the disillusionment of his own people.

The vast Northern Region is still well behind the others in “ progress.” Two-thirds of its 18 million people are strict Muslims, accepting the authority of their Emirs. Educational progress is still slow and there is no prospect for a generation of the Region being able to replace from its own resources the overseas officers who have served them so well. The North fears and dislikes the more educated Southerners and if they were not economically bound to the Federation would be glad to be quit of it.

Colonial Office, S.W. 1. 29th My, 1958.

How many times have we seen threads, with pictures here in Nairaland of some man pressing himself into the butt of a female close by in a bus or crowdy gathering? Public opinion should support call by Ganduje, or anyone, to partition the contact between unrelated male, female persons in close presence in public. yanshDoctor:
during yaradua time soludo proposed removing two zero digit from our naira as a result from massive inflation.

yaradua setup a northern committee over the issue to look into it. they stated that due to illiteracy level in the north it will be difficult for them to understand the new currency. they said a cattle seller will find it difficult to adjust from been a millionaire to become and hundrednaire or thousandnaire.

the kicked against the proposal for this reasons.

now tell me should we continue to be held back by this malams? policies that can help growth in the south are been drop down by the north once there interest is not in it.

the reason for this topic is to point out one of the things that make us to not compatible living together.
The reality of currency circulation in Nigeria is too painful to be released into public domain. If people gain awareness of what is truly happening with currency it could cause another war.

Let me hint you. 80% or more of Bureau De Change operators are Northerners...Muslim Northerners to be precise. Their operation in the market set policies in Central Bank foreign exchange rates. They are direct fronts for money laundering. They are in posession of so much hard currency in their vaults that don't even need the Central Bank for anything. They can wreck the national economy if they so choose. If Bureau de Change were listed on stock exchange I would liquidate all my shares in breweries and other beverage manufacturer's and put my money in their bonds. The excuse they give of illiteracy and conservatism is bullshyte, their real reason is to remain sitting on national monetray policy and currency distribution. It also factors in, amongst other things, to keep the country from entering restructure. If we must enter restructure they want it done at state level, opposed to regional level.
