pmoye: Sir, you must understand that posting examples of such individuals who failed to 'remedy' their insufficient grade would be in bad taste. If I had no knowledge of actual individuals like this I would not have made the claim. But I do.
I also understand the stipulation that only PhD holder should be promoted to the SL grade, but this is often ignored by universities so as to get the right staff ratio required for accreditation, especially since lecturers in the senior cadre (Senior lecturer, Readers, Professors) are often unwilling to leave government institutions for private universities. Also partly because private universities are often not willing to match the remuneration of these cadres. And so a work around is to effect rapid promotion of their staff, and sometimes without a PhD, to the Senior Lecturer cadre. There are actual examples of individuals who have been so promoted based on their age.
Curiously NUC doesn't seem to be interested in vetting the qualifications of these different academic cadres during resource verification. This is a menace that NUC needs to sit up to curb in our academic institutions. That's ridiculous in a country with many PhDs. Some are looking for jobs for years. |

pmoye: No, I am saying that these individuals have not received the necessary training and degrees required for their grade categories. A poor undergraduate degree will require a PGD before masters. This they did not do. A poor MSc grade will require an MPhil either terminally or as MPhil PhD. This they have not done. Yet they were appointed by some universities as Senior Lecturers, Readers and all. And this is because their appointments are mostly based on lobbying and connections which is exactly what the educational system must neither have nor encourage.
I am sure bros you understand the implication of employing unqualified individuals in the educational sector. It has a negative domino effect on all other sectors in the country. The best way to destroy a country is to entrench mediocrity in its educational and training sector. I personally believe that it is these type of unqualified personnel in the university system that resort to the hideous sex-/money-for-grades practice. One will not expect an intellectually sound and academically disciplined individual who has embraced the teaching profession as a calling, to do these evil things. But someone employed without proper qualification will most likely perpetuate this tendency.
CAVEAT: This in no way supports the ridiculous trend and practice of delaying promotion to professorial cadre in our universities until when their lecturers are positively in their old age. This both evil, and malevolent and against national interest. Sir, I am still finding it difficult to appreciate how you got to know that they never "remedied" their poor grade. In today's Nigeria, there's a caveat by NUC that academics who have not acquired PhD shouldn't be elevated or promoted to SL. The much an academic with proven years of experience with MSc can get is L1. In passing, you have to show evidence of your charges. |

asunmoGGMU: He is right bro. My understanding with NUC accreditation reports that I have partaken is that there are limits to the number of professors you can have in a Department. This is in relation to the number of faculty members in other cadres below them. This is to allow for balance and proper tutelage of those coming up. Do you know Graduate Assistants are not principally allowed to lead a course? The believe is that they are to be attached to a senior faculty that is qualified to lead the course, most times professors. With your submissions, I want to believe you understand the system. All these professors that the GAs are assigned to end up doing nothing in the course and leaving it all to the GAs. Sir, NUC never said a faculty member who has met the requirements to be promoted to the rank of professor shouldn't be promoted because there are a lot of professors in the department. No!!! NUC advises universities, for clarity, let me say departments to employ across levels in order to avoid vacuum as time progresses. NUC doesn't recognized GAs and ALs as lecturers given that they are not authority in the fields. However, it encourages their employment so that they can be trained for future tasks. |

pmoye: I will try to make this brief. The reaction against the Op partly shows the level of gender bias entrenched in our society in Nigeria. If the person of interest in that article had been a man, I am sure the reaction would have been different. Many of those commenting would have used the opportunity to take a swipe at ally university lecturers as being sex-starved depraved and incompetent human specimens. But because she is a woman, let us cut her some slack. Right?
This is not about Sidi Osho. I have taken the time and made the effort to investigate her academic and work history, and from what I have gathered so far she remains the best VC that ever worked at ABUAD. In fact rumour has it that she had to leave ABUAD because of her no-nonsense and sensible stance that some power-that-be in the institution did not feel comfortable with. We can not take this away from her. And yes, there is no law preventing a senior lecturer from being appointed the VC of a university. Few years ago a University in the North had a lecturer with a Dr title as the Acting Vice Chancellor. So those that are trying to insinuate that this post was done for an ulterior motive can now change their mind.
I also recommend that those commenting should take the time to read the Punch article attached instead of simply commenting without knowing the full gist of the matter.
I did this post to stimulate a debate, a healthy debate. And No, I am not going to start mentioning names of other academic staff members across Nigerian private universities (especially) that have been unduly promoted to the professorial cadre. We have individuals that are now readers (a professorial cadre) in different private universities who had graduated with third class, and had scored lower than PhD-grade in their MSc, and have failed to obtain a PhD degree, but yet have been promoted to the professorial cadre. You can not make the Wole Soyinka argument for individuals like this. Wole Soyinka and other appointments like him are in the exemption and not the rule, and it is purely because of their unmistakable achievements in their areas of practice. This is completely against the practice in some Nigerian universities that the initial post was intended to stimulate a discourse on.
PhD is not just a title, it is a testament to dedication, discipline and experience in the field an academic has chosen to teach and profess. And yes, certain (few) individuals that have attained this same and more level of experience in the field can be on their merit be elevated to a professorial level though without a PhD but with more than the PhD programme was designed to instill. Now what happens when we arbitrarily circumvent this training and elevate individuals who are not deserving to the post they occupy? What happens to the graduates they produce? What happens to the productivity and contribution to national building of our universities? Your guess is as good as mine.
Please note: Sidi Osho has a PhD and there is nothing wrong about her becoming a VC or being returned to her former post when she returned to her old school. But upon her dismissal, it is morally wrong for a sitting governor to appoint her as a commissioner. And then for the shameful lobbying for the reversal of the dismissal that ensued the moment the governor appointed her. That singular dismissal should have disqualified her from that appointment in a saner clime.
No one sponsored this post. We Nigerians should stop taking sides with what is wrong. We keep complaining that merit is being trampled by the public office holders and that corruption is rife, while some Nigerians have lost their ability to judge an issue without revealing innate corrupt tendencies in their heart. God bless Nigeria. And read the Punch news piece before commenting. Sir, I want to quickly point out some lapses in your submission. 1.You did mention that some academics had Third Class in their first degree, Second Class Lower and couldn't make PhD grade at MSc level, and are now professors in some private Universities. There's no law that says that one with the above grades can't further or becomes a professor anywhere in the world. Are you saying in a situation where someone who graduated with MPhil/PhD grade, or MPhil at MSc level and get enrolled for MPhil before progressing to PhD, or is enrolled for MPhil/PhD and successful meet the requirements for the award of PhD, such a fellow shouldn't be promoted to the rank of professor? Common! In today's Nigeria, no one without PhD is promoted to the rank of a reader not even a consultant with West African College of Surgeons certiification. You should rather say that the person is using fake PhD. |

isthatso: Unilag and ife, I know this for a fact. Every department/faculty is different. Some departments can have 8 professors and some only 1. U.I economics department obviously has funding for 15 professors, not every department will get funding for that many professors. U.I is a pioneer university, it's economics department will have links and funding From external agencies like the Un and World bank etc, I beleive it is also the centre for NISER and research in economics, so it will get a lot of funding. Show me a federal university that has 4 professors in Botany for example. My brother, let's not argue. For your record, staff of Universities are not paid by the department they belong. It's the responsibility of federal government to pay both teaching and non teaching staff of federal universities through the ministry of education. You can verify for yourself. It's not even universities that pay. On funding, you are right. However, let me correct an impression. Funding sourced by departments in universities more especially Ui, 10% goes to the central university account and the rest are used by the department for some of its needs such as buying staff, laptops, funding staff for retreat, etc. Note, such fund is not used for staff salary. I repeat, it's not used for salary. There was a time in the history of Ui that Sociology department had more professors than the department of economics that I earlier quoted. Private universities might not promote faculty member to the rank of a professor for reasons such as funds. I doubt given that they need accreditation. Not federal universities. In the case of Botany that you cited, I can confidently tell you that where the staff meet up the requirements for the rank of professor, they will be promoted. Let me shock you a little. At Ui, there's no department that doesn't have at least five professors including the Botany that you quoted. Verify please. Lastly, for promotion in universities, same criteria is used for all departments across a particular University. What delays promotion of some academics where they have met the requirements is institutional factors such as poor management in which the Vice Chancellor is not particular of staff welfare. Even at that, it is not particular department or faculty in the said University. Shalom. |

isthatso: let me also add that in some federal Universities in Nigeria they have a quota, so unless the professors above you retire/resign or they increase the number of professor slots available in your department, you will not attain the rank of professor in that University no matter how brilliant you are. I strongly disagree with your submission. Mention the federal universities. Everyone can become professors in a department if they meet up the criteria. That is what is currently the order as we speak I in the department of economics University of Ibadan with over fifteen professors. |

I took time to read all the comments. I smile and at some point, shake my head given the way Nigerian youths can argue authoritatively while they are wrong and ignorant.
It is important to point out that every country has guiding principles and laws. Same goes with education in various countries. Guidelines are set. And what is applicable in the United States of America for instance, might not be the same in Nigeria. For instance, in the United States of America, a faculty member with PhD can be promoted to a full professor with just two quality publications or patent in high impact journal. They are more interested in contribution to knowledge. In Nigeria, ours is "suffer head". Suffer head in the sense that we don't regard ourselves to be competent. Hence, the system allows one to be promoted to the rank of professor not only after acquiring PhD, but must published as many articles and and be promoted through the ranks (lecturer 2, lecturer 1, Senior lecturer, and reader). Each of these ranks required three years of teaching, community service and required publications Do you know that some universities in Nigeria more especially the new federal universities promote academics to higher ranks within two years or less? Let me quickly point out that even in Nigeria, promotion criteria differs across Senate of Universities. It is on this note that one can be a professor in University A for instance, but on applying to University B for a position, he/she will be assessed with University B criteria and might find out that he/she deserves to be in a lower rank like Senior Lecturer not even Reader. For instance, if any academic seeks to be employed in Ibadan as a professor, he/she can best be given SL. That is not really demotion to say. It's based on Ui criteria in which you can only be a professor by growing in the system. In the same vein, a senior lecturer in UNN for instance who feels he has all it takes to be promoted to a professorial chair can approached University XYZ and if he meets its criteria, can be given.
Again let me shed some light. Some academics who are privilege to be faculty members before obtaining PhD, rose to the ranks of L1 in some Universities in Nigeria. Thanks to their publications. As soon as they obtained PhDs, they were promoted to SL. I have a good number of friends who have benefitted from the largess. I wouldn't want to mention the Universities but mostly Private universities. If they decide to seek employment in University of Ibadan for instance, the criteria is irrespective of the number of years the person has taught in University or Universities, and publications in learned journals, he/she should be given a position with reference to the year he acquired PhD. For instance the the person acquired PhD in 2018 and is seeking to be a Senior Lecturer in Ui in 2020 given twelve years of teaching and publications. Ui will offer the person L2, a position for PhD without cognate experience. If PhD was obtained in 2017, Ui will offer the fellow L1 as long as he/she can boast of 8 points in publication based on Ui assessment.
Let me stop here please. |

First JAMB, I didn't have 100 naira as it was then to check the result. In addition, my O Level English Language written same year I Failed it. Second JAMB, I thought 204 will see me through Accountancy at Uniport. It dawn on me that I was kidding even after wasting 5,000 naira for supplementary form. Third JAMB, I was overwhelmed with Joy when I had 250. Uniport again told me it wasn't good enough. The HOD of my chosen course at Uniuyo walked me out of his office despite the fact that I surpassed the cut off point which was 240. What was my offence? I chose Uniuyo second choice. Lol Fourth JAMB, got angry and went for 303. That was when my name was number two on my first choice University list for my chosen course. Interestingly, it was one of the first generation universities.
While the University calendar was delayed for one year, Uniuyo offered me my desired course through supplementary with my third JAMB score. I told Uniuyo, go to hell. I rather wait a year and attend a prestigious university where I graduated with some insignificant score away from First Class. My fault. Not that of any lecturer. |

babson9jata: *MY SUCCESS STORY IN FUTA.* *With 4.68 from 3.80!--*
The 20th day of December, 2019 was a very special day for me as I was awarded a First Class Honors, Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Accounting, Federal University of Technology Akure.
To the glory of God, I entered FUTA on 3rd of December 2015 as an undergraduate. I had a four man squad and we all strived to be successful. In a nutshell, first semester result 100 level result was out and it happened that I had the lowest GPA of 3.80 in the squad. I was so disheartened that I had the lowest GPA and I was a bit happy that I didn't scored too low despite my political office as NUASA pioneer General Secretary (with Aluta-P led executive) and my position as the National President, Jnr/Int RAN. I informed a brother, Bosun Egberinde of the situation at hand and he encouraged and motivated me to keep moving and aim high.
Second semester 100 level result was released, I had 4.44 (was so annoyed because I had a C in CSC102, a three unit course which hindered my chance of making a first class that semester). I will never forget, a friend out of the 4 man squad who made a statement that struck a cord in me, he actually had a 'B' in a 4 unit course and he was like, "if ordinary BBM could have an 'A' BIO 102, then he should definitely have more than that" (with the impression that he is far better than me). This drove me high and mad . 200 level first semester, I started reading for an average of *8 hours in a day and once read for 16 hours on a stretch.* Guess what, I had a 5.00 that semester.
We were two that actually had the 5.00 then and that was the first of its kind in Accounting and the faculty, SMAT (except IT report) according to history. I was so amazed because in 4 of 9 of the courses, I had 70 -72 (A). (Isn't God faithful? ). The news went viral throughout the faculty and we became the talk of the devil for a while.
Not to bore you with this long story, Second semester 200 level, I had 4.67. I actually spent my lecture free week at a National camp ☹. God is good!
First Semester 300 level, I had 4.63; was scared of dropping because I started my professional exam ICAN-ATS in that semester and officially launched my enterprise, BBM WORLD (Graphics Design).
Second semester 300 level, only had 11 days to prepare for school exam due to my second stage of my professional exam, but guess what, I made a 5.00 as well . First Semester 400 level, again, I made a 5.00. It was a back to back, hit to hit . Should I burst your burble? I wasn't in school in the first week of exam, I was in Lagos for my ICAN-ATS induction, also represented the university in an inter-university competition (Annual Conference for Accountant at JABU) yet, God did it. And in the last semester, 400 level second semester, I had 4.88 (a 3 unit course actually hindered me from having a 5.00 for the fourth time. I had a 'B' ☹.
However, I bless God because only 6 out of about 95 students had an 'A' in a 6 unit project and I was honoured to be among them. Also represented FUTA at an inter-university summit or competition at OAU in October which lead to a competition/teasing between OAU and FUTA (#OAUvsFUTA on tweeter). I and my team made them know that FUTA is the best!.
Today, I graduated as the 5th best graduating student in the department of Accounting with a CGPA of 4.68 from 3.80 of 5.00 scale. _I am a true product of Grace._

Christianity Etc › Re: Six Churches That Don't Celebrate Christmas by Mires: 8:06am On Dec 25, 2019 |
Solidkay: Christmas celebration has become rampant among the Christians. Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.
But some Churches refuse to be celebrating Christmas and below are the 6 Churches that don't celebrate Christmas.
1- JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES This religious organization is one of the biggest groups of Christmas-Shunners. Once upon a time, Jehovah's Witness used to observe Christmas. This was until 1928, after further study bynone official. The official found that this is based on "false religious beliefs or activities". Deseret news reports that this is explained in a 1993 book, "Jehovah's Witness-Proclaimers of God's Kingdom".
2- SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH Just like Jehovah's Witness, this is Church is also against Christmas celebration.
A publication from them reads: "We do not celebrate Christmas as the Birth of Christ per say since Christ was not born in December".
He did not want us to celebrate his birth or He (Christ) would have told us when he was born. It has become a money-making celebration with Christ mixed in. It is a paga ritual.
3- DEEPER LIFE A few years ago, Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, the head of the Church announced to the world that his Church does not celebrate the popular Holiday. Explaining at the 2013 retreat. He said: "We don't celebrate Christmas nor sing Christmas carol; because Christmas is of idolatrous background "
4- GOD'S KINGDOM SOCIETY (GKS) GKS believes that there us no single evidence that Jesus was born on the 25th of December. Rather, they believe he was born on October and that Christmas originated from a "noisy pagan festival in honour of the god of the sun".
The church was started by St. Gideon MeriodereUrhobo in 1934 after leaven Jehovah's Witnesses with the headquarters found in Warrior.
5- RELIGIOUS SOCIETY OF FRIENDS AKA QUAKERS. This church believes that " every day is a holy day", so there is no need to single out just one day to celebrate.
6- MOUNTAIN OF FIRE MINISTRIES (MFM) According to the founder of the church, Pastor D.K. Olukoya, " We don't celebrate Christmas because the root is demonic " 7. Church of Christ |
