Programming › What Is A Ddos Attack? by mmsen(op): 9:06pm On Jun 04, 2015
A denial-of-service (DoS) or distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is an attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users. A DoS attack generally consists of efforts to temporarily or indefinitely interrupt or suspend services of a host connected to the internet.

Distributed denial-of-service attacks are sent by two or more people, or bots, and denial-of-service attacks are sent by one person or system. As of 2014, the frequency of recognized DDoS attacks had reached an average rate of 28 per hour. A week long DDoS attack campaign may be purchased online for $150

Attackers frequently build networks of infected computers, known as 'botnets', by spreading malicious software through emails, websites and social media. Once infected, these machines can be controlled remotely, without their owners' knowledge, and used like an army to launch an attack against any target. Some botnets are millions of machines strong.

Botnets can generate huge floods of traffic to overwhelm a target. These floods can be generated in multiple ways, such as sending more connection requests than a server can handle, or having computers send the victim huge amounts of random data to use up the target’s bandwidth. Some attacks are so big they can max out a country's international cable capacity.

DDos attacks are usually characterized by the following:

Unusually slow network performance
Unavailability of a particular web site
Inability to access any web site
Dramatic increase in the number of spam emails received
Disconnection of a wireless or wired internet connection
Long term denial of access to the web or any internet services

Denial of service attacks can be problematic, especially when they cause large websites to be unavailable during high-traffic times. Fortunately, security software has been developed to detect DoS attacks and limit their effectiveness.

Science/Technology › 419 - An Economic Growth Sector? by mmsen(op): 12:50am On Jun 04, 2015
http://afritechnet..ae/2015/06/phishing-growing-business.html

People often ask why so many young men are lured into the world of Yahoo boys. The reality is that the money is good and the work is straightforward. Nor is 419 (better known elsewhere as 'phishing') in any way particular to Nigeria, it's a global phenomenon as a result of the riches on offer.

Phishing remains a bustling industry on the Web, according to a new report from the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG). According to the report, there were at least 123,972 unique phishing attacks worldwide during the final half of last year, and those attacks occurred on 95,321 unique domain names.

Major findings from the report include:

1. New companies are constantly being targeted by phishers. Some phishers are
attacking targets where consumers may least expect it.

2. The ten companies that are targeted most often by phishers are attacked
constantly, sometimes more than 1,000 times per month. Together the top ten
targets suffered more than three-quarters of all the phishing attacks observed
worldwide.

3. The number of domain names used for phishing reached an all-time high.

4. Phishing in the new top-level domains started slowly. We expect to see phishing
levels in them rise as time goes on.

5. Chinese phishers were responsible for 85% of the domain names that were
registered for phishing. These phishers started using .CN domains more frequently.

6. More than 16 percent of the world's malicious registrations were made in the .TK, .CF, .GA and .ML registries, according to the report.

7. Phishing attacks were not mitigated as quickly. The median uptime of phishing
attacks increased to 10 hours 6 minutes — up from 8 hours and 42 minutes in
1H2014. This means that phishing attacks were not being shut down as efficiently in the critical first hours, when most victims fall prey.

APWG have called for service providers to be more responsible and clamp down the problem as it currently stands before it morphs into something greater.
Science/Technology › Anyone Excited By Project Vault? by mmsen(op): 12:28am On Jun 04, 2015
http://afritechnet..ae/2015/05/project-vault-secure-computing.html

Project Vault is a secure computing environment on a micro SD card, designed to be used on any platform. Even though it is found on such a small memory card it has an ARM-based processor, wireless communications (NFC) and an antenna.

It's main function, according to the Google I/O demo, is to encrypt communications and keep data safe from hackers. For the system to work both devices must be using Project Vault. Google also claims that the device can be used to encrypt video and as a viable alternative to passwords.

A software development kit has already been released for Project Vault, with developers invited to get creative and build suitable apps for the device.

Google's initial market is the business community, particularly healthcare providers and companies in the financial services industry, spheres that have been especially targeted by hackers.

Even though Project Vault is the size and shape of a tiny memory card, it has an ARM-based processor, wireless communications (in this case, NFC) and an antenna.
Programming › SSH Keys Generated On Debian Vulnerable by mmsen(op): 11:57pm On Jun 03, 2015
Back in 2008 Github account holders were strongly advised to discontinue use of any SSH keys generated on Debian based systems (including Ubuntu) as they were deemed too weak to be considered safe - the pool of numbers used to create the keys was said to make cracking said keys 'trivial'. Users were told to patch their Debian based systems and update their keys.

The issue appears to have resurfaced seven years later, with Github staff finding that many users did not take heed of the advice given back then. It has been established that there were, at least 94 keys, on GitHub that contained the Debian-derived weakness. The staff have since revoked many of the keys, as a way of protecting themselves from blame and bad press.

Keys found on Github allow users acces to public repository accounts belonging to the likes of Spotify, Yandex, and UK government developers.

Computers › Why You Should Use A VPN by mmsen(op): 11:30pm On Jun 03, 2015
A VPN is a network of computers that are all connected securely even though they're in different locations and all using different connection methods. The biggest benefit to a VPN is that all of the computers on one are securely connected to one another and their traffic encrypted and kept away from prying eyes. Another benefit is that all of the computers on any particular VPN are effectively on the same network, meaning they can communicate as if they were right next to one another, plugged in to the same router.

Businesses use VPNs to connect remote datacenters, and individuals can use VPNs to get access to network resources when they're not physically on the same LAN (local area network), or as a method for securing and encrypting their communications when they're using an untrusted public network.

Most VPNs rely on tunneling to create a private network that reaches across the Internet.

VPNs cannot make online connections completely anonymous, but they can usually increase privacy and security

To prevent disclosure of private information, VPNs typically allow only authenticated remote access and make use of encryption tools.

The VPN security model provides:

Confidentiality, such that even if the network traffic is sniffed at the packet level an attacker would be confronted with encrypted data

Sender authentication to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the VPN

Message integrity to detect any instances of tampering with transmitted messages

There are an ever increasing number of VPN service providers with a broad range of service quality but Private Internet Access is one of the more reputable options available. When selecting a service users should be aware that speed of connection varies between providers; some keep more detailed logs of users' internet use than others (some claim not keep any logs at all); some offer SOCKS5 proxy connection options. Those looking for a VPN service should also pay attention to the host nation in which the provider is located.

Computers › Rombertik Malware Traced To Lagos Man by mmsen(op): 6:00pm On Jun 03, 2015
Rombertik a dangerous form of malware that deletes the computer's MBR (master boot record) has been traced back to one Kayode Ogundokun, in Lagos.

Researchers delved through the data to uncover that the malware is a version of Carbon Grabber, which the company detects as Infostealer.Retgate. Investigators at ThreatConnect believe that Mr Ogundokun triggered the malware by way of a common 419 scam email.

Those investigating suggest that Ogundokun likely purchased a new version of Carbon Grabber from a much more capable and sophisticated tool author, where the author subsequently sold or licensed it to the less capable operator. This particular sample was keyed to the centozos.org[.]in infrastructure that Ogundokun maintained, where it was later operationalized and was identified by Cisco. It appears as if this particular sample of Carbon Grabber was simply caught up in a headline grabbing story.

What is most interesting is that for someone looking to exploit security holes Ogundokun appears to have made no attempt to safeguard his own details - researchers were able to find his various social media accounts, including youtube instructional videos, in addition to his personal
bank details.

AreaFada2:
@Shymex, the intricacy is really mind-blowing. I have got the kids to see them too.

@Yoruba religions in Benin, it's very simple.

With Oranmiyan/Oba Eweka 1 dynasty came many Ife gods to Benin and maybe thereafter too. And mostly like several skilled people too.

Even the priest in charge of royal ancestral shrine (Chief Oloton of Benin) came with Oranmiyan from Ife. The same family is still in charge till now.
Freeborn born citizens of Ife & few visitors were the only people allowed to enter the palace without body tattoo (iwu) which every Benin adult used to have as a mark of Benin identity. Until about the 19th century.

In any case, in my part of Edo State, unique deities my ancestors returned with from OWO are still there, of course most are now Christians. Even Owo dialect spoken there is just gradually dying out now. And there are at least 25 villages with Eastern Yoruba heritage like that I know of.

Like the Romans, Benin people adopted gods even from vassal states. Like my family were imperial ambassadors in Owo. Princely ambassadors adopted such deities across areas that fell under Benin control at some point. It was a good diplomatic move too. A sign of respect from supposed overlords. Like Romans adopted Greek and Egyptian gods.

I consider Benin not as a tribe, but as a culture. Being a Benin person is belonging a central cultural heritage and the Oba as the custodian of tradition, traditional religion and culture. But actually it's a kaleidoscope of many traditions and cultures, some indigenous, some adopted. Many non-Benin cultures have survived within Benin Kingdom, in a way they might not have done elsewhere. Diversity seemed to have been quite normal, especially as mercenaries and skilled people from elsewhere were welcome.

For example, the large number of Benin people in Akure, Owo, Ondo, Ikare, Ekiti areas and so on called Ado-Akure (Edo n'Ekue) colloquially, till about 1914, now all go by Yoruba name and identity. Whereas, in the last 200 hundred years, two Benin Traditional Prime Ministers (the Iyase), doubling as head of the army and second-in-command to the Oba, were chosen from among Ado-Akure people, Okoro-Otun being the best known.
Another Iyase came from Brass (a son of Amayayagbo/King of Brass) in recent memory. Being of Benin royal ancestral ties. I know their descendants, who are all proud Benin people today. Even the current Iyase is of Urhobo heritage.

The clamour for tribal supremacy and independence in Nigeria makes it difficult to talk about our historical interdependence.

Sorry for the epistle.
Ideas are more important than anything else, including blood - the Benin people understood this, hence why they were once so great.

I hope Nigerians can come to understand this fact too so that it might also become great, on a global sphere.

Donations account for a lot.

Also special exhibits bring in money.

As well as the events that are held there on the back of their ability to say that they have so many artifacts.

There's nothing 'British' about the 'British Museum', besides it's location. Most of the artifacts there were stolen from elsewhere - at least the most interesting ones are. It might be the largest collection of stolen goods in the world.

The blouse worn by the woman in the pics are of recent times.

The 50s was the era of treated hair.

Afros came in the 70s.

Women in Lagos went to nightclubs back then, stop being so naive.
