CareerRe: How Lucrative Is OPTOMETRY by monex(m): 12:30am On Jan 10, 2016

I hope this is helpful

Your sight depends on seeing the right eye doctor at the right time.When it's time to "get your eyes checked," make sure you are seeing the right eye care professional for your needs. Ophthalmologists, optometrists and opticianseach play an important role in providing eye care to consumers. But the levels of training and expertise are quite different for each type of provider. Here's a quick look at the three types of eye care providers:
Ophthalmologist
An ophthalmologist — Eye M.D. — is a medical or osteopathic doctor who specializes in eye and vision care. Ophthalmologists differ from optometrists and opticians in their levels of training and in what they can diagnose and treat. As a medical doctor who has completed college and at least eight years of additional medical training, an ophthalmologist is licensed to practice medicine and surgery. An ophthalmologist diagnoses and treats all eye diseases, performs eye surgery and prescribes and fits eyeglasses and contact lenses to correct vision problems. Many ophthalmologists are also involved in scientific research on the causes and cures for eye diseases and vision disorders.Subspecialists: additional knowledge and training for specific eye needsWhile ophthalmologists are trained to care for all eye problems and conditions, some Eye M.D.s specialize in a specific area of medical or surgical eye care. This person is called asubspecialist. He or she usually completes one or two years of additional, more in-depth training called a fellowship inone of the mainsubspecialty areassuch as glaucoma, retina, cornea, pediatrics, neurology and plastic surgery, as well as others. This added training and knowledge prepares an ophthalmologist take care of more complex or specific conditions in certain areas of the eye or in certain groups of patients.
Optometrist
Optometrists are healthcare professionals who provide primary vision care ranging from sight testing and correction to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of vision changes. An optometrist is not a medical doctor. An optometrist receives a doctor of optometry (OD) degree after completing four years of optometry school, preceded by three years or more years of college. They are licensed to practice optometry, which primarily involves performing eye exams and vision tests, prescribing and dispensing corrective lenses,detecting certain eye abnormalities, and prescribing medications for certain eye diseases.
Optician
Opticians are technicians trained to design, verify and fit eyeglass lenses and frames, contact lenses, and other devices to correct eyesight. They use prescriptions supplied by ophthalmologists, who are medical doctors and surgeons or optometrists, but do not test vision or write prescriptions for visual correction. Opticians are not permitted to diagnose or treat eye diseases.Safeguard your vision. See the right eye careprofessional at the right time.We all depend on our vision in more ways that we may realize. Without healthy vision, our ability to work, play, drive or even recognize a face can be drastically affected. Many factors can affect our eyesight, including other health problems such as high blood pressure ordiabetes. Having a family member with eye disease can make you more prone to having that condition as well. Sight-stealing eye disease can appear at any time. Very often they are unnoticeableat first and are difficult to detect.That's why it is so important to see an ophthalmologist for a complete medical eye exam by age 40, and then as often as prescribed by yourEye M.D.Following are just some of thesignsor risk factors for eye disease. If you have any of these, be sure to visit an ophthalmologist. A complete, medical eye exam by an Eye M.D. could be the first step toward saving your sight.
*.Bulging of one or both eyes;
*.Dark curtain or veil that blocks your vision;
*.Decreased vision, even if temporary;
*.Diabetes mellitus;
*.Distorted vision;
*.Double vision;
*.Excess tearing;
*.Eyelid abnormalities;
*.Family history of eye disease;
*.Halos (colored circles around lights);
*.High blood pressure;
*.HIV or AIDS;
*.Injury to the eye;
*.Loss of peripheral (side) vision;
*.Misaligned eyes;
*.New floaters (black "strings" or specks in the vision) and/or flashes of light;
*.Pain in the eye;
*.Thyroid disease-related eye problems (Graves' disease);
*.Unusual red eye.

Why not read medicine. Don't waste your years there after reading it and you become fustrated when you are shown your portfolio at work. Please do well to follow the news on the goings on in the Nigeria health sector. An optpmetrist according to standard international practice is one who studies on how to refract lenses (glasses) while an opthalmologist who is a specialist doctor in the eye (gotton after first becoming a medical doctor and spending futher years training on the eye) is far more superior in the sense that they operate on the eye, prescibe eye drugs and refract lenses. They boss the optometrist in eye hospitals. So think wisely. Actually optometry is diploma course in the UK but na naija arrangement made it a degree course. So I would advise you choose medicine and specialise in the eye if you like eye matters. THANKS
that is an optician. you got it confused.

Cmanforall:
I know about optometrists...
Yes, they get lucky sometimes and retained after NYSC. Some places(especially Northern Nigeria) take them as medical Doctors because of the 'Dr' attached to their person, and most of them make maximum use of this to treat other ailments outside their eye region.

One came to a hospital(to meet a Med. Dr.) to seek some training in clinical skills(like a Med. Doctor) and diagnosis to aid him during NYSC and afterwards. This is because of the ongoing trend of Optometrists practicing as Med. Drs when posted to some regions of the country.

The advantage you can have as an Optometrist is to travel to Saudi Arabia. Yes, their government come to Nigeria annually to recruit Optometrists. I have many friends there in Saudi Arabia. It is in such case you can say Optometry is lucrative.

Another way they can make it is working in already established firms.
just say they are ODs not MDs.

Are you saying saying that prostitute can't be raped?
dont mind him. as in ehn. the way people reason. I went for a stage play @ terrakulture. the theme was about rape. During the question and answer session, i proferred that educating men on what constitutes a rape might be a quickwin in reducing rape. with some of the comments I see here, i was right.

A lot of guys dont seek to rape/hurt a girl. the problem is they dont even know when it becomes a rape:

na she come my house/hotel room. what was she expecting?
she is my girlfriend
she is a prostitute
na she give me signals
she collects money and gifts from me
she said stop na but na so girls dey talk.

the above are some unjustified excuses usually given for rape. As I said earlier, education is key.

I don't like amphibious politicians that jump ships like pirates. But on a more serious note, won't APC become the new PDP when all this disloyal and hungry politicians defect to it? What happens to the party's integrity and their goal of fighting corruption?

I think the legislature should pass a bill to limit or stop this trend of comedic political hubbub currently taking place.
well the current APC membership has a lot of pdp defectees already. Saraki and Dino melaye were pdp guys who defected and later "became" saints and change agents and are now back as corrupt people due to their fight with Tinubu.

At the end it is mostly propaganda and media sensationalism
BusinessRe: The Burning Of The Demolished Oshodi Market In Lagos State Nigeria - Photos by monex(m): 5:47pm On Jan 07, 2016
NaijainTexas:
You know, I came into this thread trying to see what happened at this market. Living in another country, I try to keep up with what is happening back at home.

I'll say this, I do believe people were warned before demolition, but regardless, it is unfortunate that some may have lost their means of a living through the demolition.

What I was disheartened to read are most of your comments on this thread. The tribalism, the non-empathy, the anger, the insults--the hate. I don't want to paintbrush my people by a mere thread, but I see this over and over again and it hurts my heart. Why do you have to get to the point you start insulting Igbos (and someone started mocking their names even). How disgusting.

As smart and creative as we are, we revel in tearing each other down because what?
-That Nigerians aren't all in the same boat?
-That citizens of other countries distinguish and rank tribes?

When there was a Kenyans vs Naija war on Twitter, did they break you into tribes or just insult our whole country? Let's stop fooling ourselves.

Asides from the tribalism, I am shocked at how mean spirited a lot are on this board in general. Why? What is the issue, jor? I feel like a lot of you, my people are sad, and unload that as anger to your fellow citizen.

As much as some of you proclaim 'eko o ni baje', you should realize Lagos is what it is because it is a melting pot. Think about it; do you wonder why most other states aren't as successful? Think about why the US and UK are doing well. It is because of the mixture of work and ideas by people from varied walks of life.

When I was recently in Naija even, I saw my own people treating oyibos better than their own, even though those whites were there to take resources from Nigeria to enrich their home country's economy at the detriment of ours.

Can we just soften our hearts towards each other? You'd be surprised there's much to gain, but what is there to lose?

CareerRe: Computer Enginnering Or Computer Science by monex(m): 11:00pm On Jan 04, 2016
omohayek:
What's the point of sticking with a course of study in which you aren't really interested? Most of the people here telling you to stick to computer engineering have no idea what they're talking about - computer science is not about learning particular databases, networking technologies or programming languages, but about fundamental concepts such as analysis of algorithms, complexity theory, operating systems, artificial intelligence, distributed computing, etc. In other words, instead of picking up trendy technologies that will be obsolete within a few years of your graduation, you learn concepts which are timeless and will be helpful to you throughout your career.

Even if you allow career concerns to outweigh your personal preferences, you have to ask yourself: just how many real opportunities are there in Nigeria for a computer engineer? Where will you get to design ASICs, work on VLSI or do any of the other cool jobs which require a computer engineering degree? Where are the likes of Intel, AMD and Nvidia to offer you a job which will use your skills? You don't need a degree in anything to tinker about with PC hardware, to build made-to-order PCs, or even to play with devices like the Raspberry PI, so that can't be the reason to say you'll stick with computer engineering. At least with a CS degree you have the possibility of working remotely, or benefiting from outsourcing work.
@Op I quoted this post so you could read it. while he doesn't suggest a direct course to you, he provides facts about the two options. facts which i couldn't find in other posts.

in my own opinion, he never mentioned don's name. Nothng warrants degrading a fellow celebrity on stage in front of the whole world. He pricked his ego na. He is supposed to act like the don he is and let it slide.. I strongly blif badoo was referrng to d management. Even if at all he meant to diss d mavins crew, he sha ddnt mention any of there name so d damage was minimal. Don reply only added petrol to a burning fire. He obviously misunderstood olamide.
I agree that Don Jazzy's response was wrong especially as his response was an indirect insult to Olamide.

"Egbon Olamide, if you want the award come and collect it" is better than "Egbon Olamide, if you want the car come and collect it".
the latter is a bit below belt and insinuates that na Car be Olamide problem.

but like i said before, Olamide's initial rant was way overboard and it will be hyprocrisy to criticize a reaction without crticizing even more the wrong that fuelled the reaction.

if there was a misunderstanding, it was from Olamide not realizing it was by voting.

Ugbodu is a very interesting town. a border town to my town/village in Esan (not Eshan please). Being a border with so much diversity has surprisingly helped them to retain the Olukunmi language. Nice one @bigfrancis21

there is an Esan village (Ekpon) that speaks both Esan and Ika/Anioma. Would be interesting to read a history of them too.

I think people support who they like, admire or envy less regardless of the wrong act such a person might have committed.
Look at Basketmouth and Freeze; the former went below the belt while on stage, and when the latter responded on social media, more people slammed him.

The same applies in this case. Olamide comes out, throws a tantrum and most see nothing wrong, but Don Jazzy replies and suddenly, earth's oxygen is threatened. Why? Because according to people, being humble means being stupid.
It doesn't end there, Olamide then goes on a crazy twitter rant, cursing, threatening and mentioning the names of others, and hitting below the belt. Again, most don't see that, instead it's Don Jazzy's one liner on stage that is more terrible.

No true friend or fan would support olamide's acts both on and offline on this issue. It was a crass display and highly irresponsible.
Don Jazzy was wrong and should have crafted his statement more carefully not because of his humility but because CEOs and owners don't have the luxury of careless rants like their employees or workers. It ends up affecting the company and those work in it. Same goes for Olamide.

After all Olamide dey curse (ko ni da fun everybody) dey vex say Lil Kesh nor win am. so I think they both overeacted. We cant single out Don Jazzy's sttement which for me was less bad than that of Olamide.

to put it in proper perspective, just flip the coin and imagine Don Jazzy doing what Olamide did and Olamide doing the Don Jazzy response.

i totally agree. like i said earlier. the culture and values of the place and time would determine if it is right or wrong. some 40 yrs ago, even a peck would have been wrong. right now (and in Africa at least), a lip-lip is wrong and an aberration.

My answer: its not ok to kiss my daugter either, because in another dimension , my daughter will then feel its ok to kiss anyone she fancies and she's comfortable with... One of my friend's two year old son , I was playing with, suddenly held my face, leaned his head towards me and kissed me. I was shocked, ad I glared at his mum and said, wow yur son kissed me... How come he knows how to kiss?
She smiled shyly and said don't mind him...
I then carried him up and placed him on his mum's laps..
For me, its wrong... Then how much a child more than a year old.. Cmon?
I totally agree with you.

I wanted to be sure, the issue you see is about the values being inculcated in the child and not that the father might be perverted.

it is lip to lip not mouth to mouth - they are not exchanging saliva

for me and my cultural/religous belief, what the actor did (lip-lip) would be wrong. Unfortunately, I cant tag it right or wrong for him. The world is more heterogenous than we think. A lot of people find pecking to be wrong too and they would puke at a peck from father to daughter too.

So it is tough to explain right or wrong without a moral context.

This is an excerpt from a 27yr old woman on a forum :
"No when my Dad gets a kiss usually NYE once a year it's on the lips.. we are not touch feely people but kissing him on the cheek feels wrong and impersonal. "

My points. You will be taking a risk on your wife too. Well normally you are bounded by oath and you are already taking even worse risks with her than sleeping without a condom unlike the scenario with a girlfriend.

I am interested in the moral card peeps play about sticking to one partner. I say if we want to play the moral/religous card then we shouldnt even be sleeping with anyone till we get married.
