PoliticsRe: Social Programs In The Usa, Does It Aid Or Hinder People's Progress In Life? by my2cents(m): 3:46pm On May 03, 2006
As they say, pride cometh before a fall. As they say again, Give a man a fish and he comes back for more, but teach a man how to fish and he won't come back.

I choose to adhere to the latter. I personally feel that for those of us who came from naija, we came for a purpose and as such, aren't the lazy type, looking to obtain government favors. Of course, there are those who really, really need it to which I say, go for it. Then there are those whom I have heard, for example, go to the WIC office, obtain the voucher, buy food, package it in smaller waterproof (that word brings back memories, but I digress grin) bags and send them to Nigeria. To me, that's just plain wrong.

Now, before some of you get your thongs bunched up where the sun doesn't shine grin, let me reiterate - If you really, really need it, go for it. Just don't get it just because you can. Sure, others are bilking the system. 2 wrongs don't make a right though. I just feel that based on where we came from, barring exceptions of course, we have no reason to get government assistance. We have seen the good and bad of life, supposedly. There are too many biz opportunities out there for us to seek government assistance as a first resort. Something as small as driving a cab termporarily (just an example) could help. In the end, drop your degrees folks, and humble yourself, where applicable.

Having said that (just in case I choose to run for prez 20 yrs from now - u know how US politics can be grin), I have been on unemployment. At the time, I just bought my house and hadn't even moved in when I got laid off. Terrible times I gotta say. But I got over it and was back on my feet in no time. I had a choice of taking my last $600 and starting a biz, going for endless interviews where I was told I wasn't a match, or sitting at home and doing nothing. Fortunately, I chose option 2 and I haven't regretted ever since.

I hope this serves as a motivation to someone out there.

WS_FTP, It's easy to use. If you want, you can go get a copy from www.download.com . There might be a trial period after which you buy, but you can always delete and re-download (that is, if purchasing a copy for yourself isn't an option) wink

LOL,

Something tells me this thread was purposely put up here to plug McD's cheesy

Anyway, to all those who profess to love KFC, I personally stopped ever since I heard that KFC stopped meaning "Kentucky Fried Chicken" when what they say is chicken stopped being chicken shocked

In fact, I heard what they serve is some semblance of a headless bird.

Any takers?

I will go ahead and give the answer. It's kind of corny, but here it goes. Feel free to flame me afterwards grin

Folks,

They call it fast for a reason. You walk in and a few minutes later, u get ur food. It is also cheaper. Of course, u pay a price for the convenience, which is cholesterol-laden food. But hey, if you eat it and are physically active afterwards, there shouldn't be a problem.

By the way bolex, I haven't eaten fast food in at least 3 months. In fact, the closest I get to fast food is the publix sandwich - Just like subway but waaaaaay fresher grin Even at that, I eat it maybe once a month.
FoodRe: McDonalds: They're Tired Of Eating There But Can't Stop! by my2cents(m): 10:16pm On May 02, 2006
Folks,

It's all about branding. It's all about handing down to generations. When I was younger, my family would always go to McD's every sunday after church. Naturally, as an adult, though I choose not to (my first job after my "second coming" was at burger king grin), I should go there because my parents took me there. My daughter would then go there as well.

As for it being nasty. That's just personal preference. What is good for the goose is not always good for the gander. One man's meat is another's poison. Just because it is nasty for some folks, doesn't mean it is for others. The bad thing is when you eat it out of habit, or as a substitute for real food. I don't think eating it once a week or so is necessarily a bad thing. Remember, pple have different metabolic rates too.

as always, my 2 cents

I don't think so either,

I think he will be given another 2 or 3 more seasons. In my opinion, he will not voluntarily quit until he proves that his treble season of 1999 wasn't a fluke.

Just a little confused, but: the person posted on this forum does in no way, at least to me, look like the lady on http://www.justbouqui.com/ grin

Regardless, the lady on the website looks more like the music on the site. The woman posted here looks more like a gangsta rapper lol

In the end it's all about the money race, the paper chase, yeah, capitalistic state of mind baby wink

Rumor has it that our ever-loving site administrator makes a good living from it every month, which has influenced his reason not to sell.

Anyone care to comment (hopefully, this thread doesnt get deleted by him wink)?

Just a note: I read somewhere, that there is a dating website in the US that is free but makes $10,000 a month from adsense. So, lesson of the day: build a site what adds some kind of value and pple will come, pple will click grin

Cactus,

Those DUMMIEs books have always rubbed me the wrong way. I mean, I am not a dummy LOL (I hope you caught the humor in that. I am not attacking you personally grin)

To others: It's cool to google any tutorial of your liking, but if you don't have the means with which to practice (PC, servers, etc - of course assuming he doesn't have any), what good is it? Reading a tutorial about how to program, in say, PHP, isn't the same as reading a tutorial on how a tractor works.

Just a thought grin
PoliticsRe: CBN Bill Bans Spraying Of Naira Notes by my2cents(m): 2:05pm On May 02, 2006
You know,

In my opinion, spraying folks with naira is not even .001% as bad as the following, but not limited to, scenarios:

1) Women keeping it in their sweat-filled, greasy bras

2) Suya men using it to wipe excess suya oil

3) Okada wrinkling it so bad in their pockets that by the time they hand it to you, it looks more like a handkerchief

When the money is sprayed (again my opinion, I could be totally wrong about this), it falls to the ground and pple pick it up. I have never seen the quality of those naira bills detoriorate even half as quickly as the above. Spraying money is a tradition that goes many ages.

As one poster has said, it will take years before pple take it seriously. Let's think about it - if approved, how would the law be enforced with weddings and other occassions being held in Nigeria every hour of every weekend day?

Again, just my opinion, but I think it is a diversion to keep our minds off something else, and we all know what that may be wink

As always, my 2 cents

BusinessRe: Business Ideas For Friend Based Abroad With A Million Naira? by my2cents(m): 9:22pm On May 01, 2006
Nwoke I agree,

I totally forgot the amount of money involved. Pocket change, especially if you consider potential loss of friendship, if you ask me. Together with the point-of-sales stuff I mentioned above, stocks and bonds aren't a bad idea either. Basically, any business where he is in total control of his money, so that, should it fail, he has no one to blame but himself.

BusinessRe: Business Ideas For Friend Based Abroad With A Million Naira? by my2cents(m): 9:02pm On May 01, 2006
I would advice him to visit nigeria for at least a month and feed his eyes for himself. If he is like me, opportunities will jump out right in front of him. As I tell pple, the key to succeeding in business anywhere in the world is to focus on what pple need, not want. Where the market already exists, then u 2 will need to figure out how to add value so that a customer will come to you as opposed to the competition.

As for fraud, sorry to say, but I don't think that can be avoided. From my experience in naija, it seems pple forget that there is tomorrow. So either you factor in fraud into the cost price or you tell him to be there in person and focus on point-2-point sales, where he flies in, sells his stuff, collects teh cash and flies out.

as always, my 2 cents.

oyeleke,

Sorry if I didn't explain myself well. I was actually referring to nollywood stars. however, since there have been posts of musician's sites, what the heck, post athlete's sites as well grin

The response has been overwhelming so far. The only bad site I have seen is that of ramsey noah - man, I waited at least 5 minutes, staring at the screen, waiting for some kind of menu to pop up. In the end, it was there all along, but the font soooo tiny, it was hard to spot.

Thanks guys. Let's keep it rolling,

Nairaland GeneralRe: Should We Support Nairaland Financially? by my2cents(m): 8:04pm On May 01, 2006
In my opinion, the minute money is charged (as opposed to donated):

- Pple would leave in droves - We are just too addicted to it as is and there are pple who don't like change.

- Nwoke/Seun/any other name grin would have to provide some kind of service to justify the charge

I would b in favor of a voluntary donor system. Sure, if he wants to recognize donors, especially as a way to encourage others, that's fine with me.

As for hiring someone, if we are going with donations, then the person should volunteer to help. It shouldn't be paid. If the person insists, then it shouldn't be much as I don't think Nairaland will get enough donations to justify a decent salary, whatever that may be.

Nwoke, I troway salute o! It's like you don't sleep. I have "tempted" you by being on at different times of the day and somehow, it seems your (or a bot impersonation grin) is on.

If it ever becomes a burden, I would definitely suggest selling the site. You are very talented and I bet with the money you make from the sale, you can direct your energy elsewhere. Worst-case, you could still be in an advisory role for the buyers.

as always, that's my 2 cents

- Is there a decent photo of OBJ anywhere? If yes, can someone please post it to this forum?

- Will 419 ever end?

- Will there ever b 24 hour uninterrupted light and water in at least *every* major city?

- Will we ever have a cell phone service where we aren't slaves in the sense that if we don't by units after a certain period, our number is ceased?

- Will there ever be a time when armed robbery is limited, if at all, to banks and the like, as opposed to pple's homes?

Comments? Contributions? You know what do do cool
BusinessRe: Shopping Center Revolution Possible In Nigeria? (Like India?) by my2cents(m): 7:30pm On May 01, 2006
Fact is, even in the US where there is practically a shopping complex per mile driven, there is still extreme poverty - pple sleeping on the streets (even in the winter), pple who have had to choose between buying fuel to drive to work and food to eat, etc. Heck, yesterday in church, we had a couple who were homeless and slept at a local eatery. When the cops came to arrest them, church members who had arrived at the time offered to house them for one night.

In my day, the shopping complexes du jour centered around leventis and the like. If you didn't have the money, you went to the open air market across the street. Truth is, these shopping malls aren't a right and face it, are not meant for everyone. As for debt, that is a personal choice. Not to boast of it, but I still wear clothes that I bought 6 years or so ago. I could choose to be a mall rat and go shopping once a week like some, but I refuse. I also refuse to spend $100+ on a pair of nikes for a baby that can't even sit up straight, not to mention crawl.

Such revolutions are necessary in Naija, in my opinion. It brings jobs, taxes and foreign investment. I mean, other than the actual workers, the complex in question has a website that employed someone to create it grin

Of course, there are limiting factors like basic infrasctrucure and security. The key though is to figure out how to overcome these. Once you have this down pat, the millions will flow.

as always, that's my 2 cents smiley

What is wrong with a little competition? grin

Tis the essence of capitalism. Let the free market/invisible hand rule the day. In the end, users will go to the best site. Worst-case, you focus on what you could do to stand out from the competition.

In my opinion, Nairaland will not be beaten in years to come sha. wink
