einstein_e: In this era, books compete with movies, games and social media. Gone are the days that a writer could spend ten pages exploring literary techniques and being obsessed with his own voice. For a novel to appeal to people now, it has to tell a STORY. Most Nigerian writers fail in this respect. They want to write about civil wars and poverty and bad government. They should write essays, instead. A novelist writes a story and entertains. True, I got that from a writer too. Novel is storytelling not an essay. |

Family › Will You Buy A Toy Gun For Your Child? by Ndipe(op): 1:59am On Jan 14, 2012 |
The sight of a toy gun in Church given as a present to a member of my congregation created a stir that it wasnt an appropriate gift. As a kid, I loved playing police and thief thought my mom objected once when I requested for this gift from a relative. As a grown-up, I can now understand her misgivings about toy guns, but apparently, there are some parents who would not bat an eyelash if their son or daughter were given one.

SEFAGO: Maybe there is a reason why? Not so good literature
Anyways, whether literary critics are wrong or not- Nigeria seems to be the home of at least West African literature and possibly African literature maybe we dont appreciate our writers well enough because what they right about if familiar to us.
I was reading Beast of no nation by Uzodinma Iweala. Book read like crap because he was just using his life experience growing up in Nigerian and reflecting it on the main character (Agu I think it is). It would make sense since most authors use their life experience to construct stories. But boring to me because I grew up and went to school in Nigeria and knew the whole drill. But would probably sound exotic and interesting to a westerner.
Infact I think this is one of the main reasons why I dont read most nigerian books, they are not exotic enough adn hit too close to home to be too interesting. Uzodinma Iweala grew up in the USA. |

in me: If it was the other way round, i mean if it was GEJ and his wife that did the same thing, you will be quick to draw comparisons The complainer, (Expensive 007)'s profile lists Nigeria as his base, so how could he be affected by Michelle Obama's spending habits back in Nigeria? Kinda like someone commented that Genevieve Nnaji is more fashionable than Michelle Obama, and I am now thinking, does Michelle even know who Genevieve is, or is she weeping buckets of tears for being overshadowed in the fashion industry by someone whose existence doesnt add any relevance to her existence? There are more important stuff happening in the society to be sidelined by these childish topics. |

LagosShia: read about the early history of christianity and the formation of christian dooctrines and beliefs and the formation of the bible.then you'd get an idea of what insanity and falsehood mean.
can the bible tell us how many years since the world was created? how does the lack of availability of that information make Islam or christianity or any religion false? And in the same vein, you do lift up passages from the Holy Bible that you accuse of being false, as containing verses supporting the existence of Mohammed as a prophet. Nna, make up your mind about your views on the Holy Bible. |

obo_man: Any sane person has to criticize a barbaric act. We ain't saying Islam or Christianity is any better than ours but other religions ( Christianity esp) have evolved with modern practices and thinkings while ours haven't.
E.G, the practices of Christianity is quite straightforward and undemanding. No need for human sacrifice, animal sacrifice, buying 7 men with kings, e.t.c. I'm not implying Christianity is any superior to our traditional religion, but we can learn from it to modernise ours. Our fore-fathers rode on horses @ Rgp92, why ain't you still riding on horses? I'm sure you prefer to ride a Ferrari right?
Same with tradition, our fore-fathers invented it, now it's our turn to either invent ours or modernise it.
Condemning this barbaric act is a form of trying to modernise it. But it is superior to other religions because it offers true believers eternal life in God's Kingdom. |

ekt_bear: The way my father has described the traditional religion to me, it honestly sounded pretty barbaric. Too much focus on human sacrifice and ish.
This is why I'm not convinced that the coming of Western religion to Yorubaland and various other parts of Nigeria more generally was such a bad thing. Applause, read my criticism of certain parts of African culture https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-824543.0.html |
Literature › Re: Why Is Things Fall Apart Regarded As The Best Novel From Africa? by Ndipe(op): 11:24pm On Dec 15, 2011 |
kunlenki: There is no gain saying the fact the 'things fall apart' is one of the best novels in Africa. Be that as it may, it portrays a very rich African culture and traditions. There way of life is vividly depicted in such a way that one will clearly see the richness and uniqueness of the Africans. It should also be pointed out that no culture is without its pros and cons. What is most important is that we should pass the good part of these culture and tradition to our future generation. The question of whether the missionaries have done us well or bad is an issue of colonization and they should be credited for that. At for exposing us! What we should do is to divest ourselves from Western category by picking the good ones among and jettisoning the bad ones. To me, which is subjective though, Achebe is not trying to show the barbaric or inhuman nature of Africans, rather, he intends to show the richness of Africa. By my usage of richness, it does not hang on weather right or wrong but uniqueness of it. also note that right and wrong is subjective. Killing someone is wrong at all levels. Ikemefuna did not have to die for the 'sins' of another person. An oracle stipulated that he had to die, goodness, would you accept such an injustice? So, why would anybody criticize the coming of the missionaries or blame them for creating "instability" in a society that practised certain barbaric undertones? Brisingr: the missionaries meddling destroyed the stability in umofia.Blood sacrifices and warring used to be part of the culture of the people of west Africa at this particular era in which the book is based it might have been abolished with time but we will neva know thanks to missionaries.Trying to portray a utopian society was never the motive of the author but rather a society with it share of bad and good So, which would you prefer, the arrival of the missionary which put an end to these blood sacrifices and the caste system or the perpetuation of these inhumanities. |

Brisingr: I do not
its a book at least to me that shows the struggle between change and tradition how much is good and how much is toxic for a society.every culture has it good and bad u just mentioned the bad ones What were the good ones mentioned in the book? From my understanding, it appears that the author is trying to blame the missionaries for ushering in instability into an otherwise peaceful and stable society. But tell me this, how can the killing of humans be justified, like the death of Ikemefuna, or Okonkwo drinking from a human head? If the author was attempting to portray a peaceful society where order and structure reigned, then his inclusion of these incidents runs countrary to it and actually portrays Africans as a bunch of savages |

The killing of Ikemefuna, Okonkwo drinking palm wine or liquid from a human head, spousal beatings and the caste system all reinforces the notion that Africans are a bunch of savages. Would you agree with me or not? |
