I sent a text to my main windows guy and am awaiting his reply by tomorrow, I will give you his prices when I get them. But I can remember we talked about the second size (4ftx4ft without arc) or (1200mm X 1200mm) last year and he gave me a unit price of N20,000.
Thanks. Will be watching out for your response then. I want to see if i can conclude by before this weekend so that work can start so that i will not use the money for something else.

@Vito. Got this quote from an Aluminium guy but yet to negotiate it. What do you think?. Can your Aluminium guy give a better one?. My project is somewhere in Edo North.

Quotation for casement windows with net fabricated with cream powdered coated aluminium profile, glazed with 4mm thick reflective glass in vinyle gasket standard, 4 windows with Arc at the top and each panel partitioned into six units.

(1) 1200mm * 1200mm (Windows with ARC) - 4numbers @ N26,000 each = N104,000.00

(2) 1200mm * 1200mm (Windows without ARC) - 14numbers @ N22,000 each = N308,000.00

(3) 600mm * 700mm - 6numbers @ N10,0000 each = N60,000.00

Total amount = N472,000.00

@Vito. Thanks. Iam a little bit confused about what you mean by 'powder coated'. Can you shed more light on it. Iam about to take a decision this week on the various qoutes i have gotten in respect of aluminium windows. Iam yet to do the burglary though. If you do not mind, is it possible you send me some pics of your burglary from inside so that i can send it to my brother that is overseeing my project for him to know the way aluminium windows, burglary and mosquito netting are presently being combined so that he will not be deceived by anybody. My email is 'migiets@yahoo.com'.

@Vito, great job you are doing here. Does this amount of 421k inclusive of sliding mosquito netting and burgary or is it just the windows alone or is it windows and window frames?.

You have been using the words 'soak away' and 'septic tank'. Please can you explain to a building novice like me the meaning of each and the difference between them.

It has at least 3 shades of green on it, green tinted window glass plus white trims and some careful works, enjoy grin grin grin
Iam one of those that used bush green roofing sheets and i have already decided to use light green or leaf green for the painting. I saw such a colour and i took a picture of it and took it home last december to show the painter that will eventually paint the house. He was surprised that iam going for it and said i should choose another colour but i refused. I told him that it has to be the light green or leaf green iam showing him and not another green. As for the windows, it will be creame coloured casement aluminum windows with reflective (tinted) green and also creamed colour for the POP or window hood.

Your house is coming out well. For the down part of a duplex, is it advisable for somebody to do POP or PVC or just paint the decking?. The down part of my duplex project has the main sitting room, dinning, kitchen, store and an ensuite room on it and iam wondering whether to do a POP or PVC on or just to paint the decking or do a POP or PVC on the main sitting room and dinning areas and then paint the others. I have already decided that it will be PVC ceilings for the upper part. Comments and suggestions are welcomed from other gurus.

@spyder. Please what is the entire cost estimate for the window hood (called POP by some) you did for for all the windows in your six-bedroom duplex project?. I initially did not want to do any window hood but when i showed yours to Madam, she has started telling me to do it. Iam beginning to think that i will no longer show pics of your building to her. That was how i showed her bush green step tiles from your roofing of a 4-bedroom bungalow project and it became bush green step tiles all the way. Now, it is window hood all the way. So, please give me estimate quick quick before i chop watery soup with excess pepper. grin grin.

tpia@:
let's drop suggestions about the new interface please.
Using Hours/minutes/seconds on a post is making it difficult to track and trace where somebody stopped in previous post. The old way of using date/time should be brought back. For instance, you now have 'Bleep hours yyy minutes zzz seconds' ago on a post. This is making it difficult. In the previous one with date/time, i can easily track and trace to the last post i read on a topic. Now, i have to start doing addition and subtraction of hours/minutes/seconds to know where i stopped previously.

Seun: Dear Nairalanders,

I have to apologize about the intermittent errors we've been experiencing since we switched to the New Nairaland script. When making the switch, my estimate was that we would lose about 20% of our traffic on the short term, and hopefully gain all it back in a month or so, and I was prepared to take that risk.

However, I never expected that we'd have issues with site uptime as a result of the switch. Most of the issues have been as a result of bugs pushed by me in the middle of the night when my faculties were not working optimally. I think we'd be lucky not to lose 40% or more of our traffic if this keeps happening.

I hereby apologize to Nairalanders for these errors of mine. I want to assure you that my programming partner and I are doing our best to deliver a world class "New Nairaland" experience to you. Our ultimate goal is to make New Nairaland better than Old Nairaland, in every way, within a month.

Thanks a million for your understanding.
Thank you also for now driving me crazy with this your new 'Bleep hours yyy minutes ago' replacement of the date usage. This is madness. How do i know where i stopped and where to come back to?. In the previous, it was easier using the date to know this. If i read a post yesterday and i come back in two (2) days time, i simply use the date to track where i stopped and where to continue from. Now, all thanks to your changes, i now have to start converting the days to hours and minutes to know where i stopped initially. You can continue your changes as much as you want but bring back the date usage instead of this hours and minutes usage.
Nairaland GeneralRe: Let's Give Seun Time To Rebuild Nairaland by NL1960: 12:25pm On Mar 12, 2012
We know change is the only constant thing in life but this is a bad change. Seun has behave like Microsoft. Microsoft always brings out a bad version to replace a good version. My beef with this new version is the use of time instead of the date that was used in the previous one. You now see things like Bleep hours yyy minutes ago. In the previous one, i used the date to know where i stopped the last time i viewed a topic. Now, Seun is expecting me to be adding and subracting hours and minutes to know where last i stopped and to know where to continue. This is madness. It is already driving me crazy. If Seun refused to burge, he should at least changed back to date instead of the time he is now using.

Ehmmm, Just a side note sha. For those calling Bill Gates one of the greatest coders eva, I think you guys must have lost it. Why? Take a look at each iteration of the Windows OS, even with it being proprietory and all (closed source), it is the most easily penetratable, so bad that the company sets out a day every week, called "patch tuesdays" just too patch up system flaws that ends up being penetrated again before the week runs out.
Now, take a look at Linus Torvalds that designed the Linux OS when he was just a student and compare the two works. I know you guys will start shouting about it being Open Source and many people working on it, but the same goes for Windows. Or were you thinking that it's Bill Gates that codes the entire thing? If that's not ok with you, then compare the first windows and the first linux and tell me which is better and a more solid os. My point? There are lots of things about computing that a graduate can always do better than someone that learnt just a few aspects of it. Give them the credit, they spent 4years learning everything there is to know about the danm machine. In fact if you ask me, BASIC, COBOL, FORTRAN etc shouldn't be scrapped cos any body that has a good understanding of the above can easily learn java, asp, .net etc far easily than someone that started with java. Those are the basics and if you know them, you can even bring in some concepts to from them into the new one you are learning. Check out any good university curriculum abroad, they still teach those languages, heck, they even expose them to UNIX and other ancient OS so as to have a solid understanding of the basics.
Do not mind those half-baked people whom becuase they could not pass JAMB and then went on to do an 8-month course in Aptech/NIIT where they were only taught java and php now think they are computing gurus. They think java is the heart of computing. The heart of computing is the C language. Java uses C constructs. The compiler of these languages were written in C. Unix is C. It is so unfortunate that these Aptech/NIIT guys are trying to deceive people to fall into the same deep pit they have found themselves. As far as iam concern, Aptech/NIIT are finishing schools and not foundation schools. In India, those that go to Aptech/NIIT are graduate in other fields. You will see graduates in English, finance, commmerce doing Aptech/NIIT because they want to be programmers and from there they can go on to do a master in information science. All these Aptech/NIIT guys making noise here are school certificate holders. Where will school certificate and 8-months Aptech/NIIT get you in the IT career world?. Have they ever seen an advertisement in a top rate company for School certificate plus Aptech/NIIT?. The base for such companies is a degree plus other certificates if any. Can a school certificate plus Aptech/NIIT holder go ahead to do a Masters (M.sc, MBA etc). Anybody that can code basic, fortran and cobol can code any language. Iam sure when Java fades and there is another language called 'Sumatra', these same people will come here and say they are computing gurus because they can code in 'Sumatra'.

I think you're going off tangent. Everyone knows a 4 year guy is better than an 8 months programmer but definitely not in Nigeria. The Nigerian computer science department is a disgrace to both the sciences and IT in general. How many computer science graduates can  write "hello world" with java or ASP? I'll go for the 8 months guys over the comp science graduate ten times over.
Hahahahaa. So ability to write 'hello world' in java is now a measure of a good programmer?. I do not know how to write 'hello world'. For your information, Java is a language. 'Hello World' can be written in any language. When you see it being displayed, you will not know if it is written in Java or not. People just think that ability to write a program in java that was taught in an Aptech/NIIT school has made the person a guru in computing.

For your information, 8 months in an Aptech/NIIT school is too short to know computing. There was a time in this country that a Presidential Apsirant said that if voted as President, he will produce 10 times the present number of Engineers in two (2) years. Iam sure you are thinking like such a person. A doctor/lawyer/pilot etc can also be produced in 8 months. I know quite well that the computer science departments in our universities are in shambles but is it not only the computer science departments?. The entire educational sector is in shambles. my firm just recuited an Aptech/NIIT graduate. What was he doing before we recuited him?. He was lecturing and teaching from the same place he finished and he was using the same notes that he was taught with to teach. So you see, it is the same problem. Programing is not computing.

Nothing is wrong with 4 years just that in the Nigerian system it is blow expectations. You should be surprised to see a graduate without understanding of algorithm and of structural approach to solving problems. Indeed, you are taking this issue too personal. There are no equipped / qualified hands in Nigerian universities to do the training. You would be so surprised to see only few graduates can actually attempt problem solving in computer science.
Iam not taking it too personal. I was just responding to a comment. I have come across a graduate of computer science that does not know what he/she did in school. I have interviewed somebody who after 3 months of graduation does not know what he did in his/her project. I have equally come across a computer science graduate that knows very much. I have equally seen Aptech/NIIT graduates that falls into the two categories. What iam trying to bring out is that computing is not about programming. I always tell people programming is an art while computing is a science. I once told somebody that iam not good in the use of excel sheet and he started laughing that how can a computer science graduate not be a guru in the use of excel but i told him that i know the logic behind its design and that they must have used pointers in the design. An Aptech/NIIT will not know what is pointers and its usages. Anybody that knows compiler construction which i consider the heart of computing can come up with his/her programming language. You think the writers of PHP, Java and other languages brought it from their mother's womb. I can decide to come with a language that uses '[' to group statements as opposed to Java that uses '{' or those that use '.'. If you use something that is not in my compiler code, i give you a syntax error straight away. That is why it is a language. You have to learn the language and anybody can learn a language and use it. I can learn yoruba and start speaking it. I can equally learn Igbo and speak. If i tell an old man 'good morning' using the wrong word, the old man will tell me 'syntax error' and tell me to go and learn the correct usage. The old is acting as a compiler.

Neither did steve jobs yet he best the best. You said it all beaf!

Seems you are trying very hard to tell yourself you did not waste a whole 4 years studying a course that some one else did under 8 months!

Let me remind you that some bricklayers end up better designers and builders than theso called architect and engineers and they are even cheaper!

Based on the current computer science curricula in Nigerian universities, you hav every reason to panic and i will advice you to think twice before you go waste your time studying computer science under a prof that doesn't know what modern computing is all about! the choice is yours.
I have no regret. I have come in contact with several of those that did 8 months and those that did 4 years. I have interviewed both and both are working for me. When i want a cheap programmer to just code what has been designed, i call on the cheap 8 months guy and when some analysis and designing are to be done, i call on the 4 years expert guy who knows data structures, databases, compiler construction, SDLC (software development life cycle) etc and how to combine all these to get a good and stable system. Every language in computing has an underlying compiler. You think it is incantation that coverts the raw code to an interpreted code. All these tools (php, etc ) have already been designed and structured by the 4 years guy. Very soon, you will also tell me that a clarical staff who dispenses drugs in the clinic is now a Doctor.

When you want to build your house in a place like lekki, go and get a cheap bricklayer to do it for you from foundation to finishing. No wonder houses are collapsing all over the place. It is people like you that will tell the bricklayer to just 'use leg to draw teh foundation and start digging' saying 'house na house'.

The problem with computer science as a course in Nigeria is a manifestation of the Problem with Nigeria. Appointing incompetent Lecturers based on political and tribal patronage. The answer is to kill corruption so that our best can emerge.

So long as we as a people do not encourage meritocracy in all we do, nothing will work.

I bet you, you deeply regret it. In so far as the way the course is being handled in Nigeria is bad, I find it difficult to see how you can be a good programmer that can think out good algorithm without taking some formal courses like Algorithm, compiler construction, Numerical analysis, etc as a course. These are the foundation upon which a good program is built on.

True the lecturers offered nothing, but mere mentioning of the courses spurred some to read up as much as they can which are not entirely useless. Let me see some of you work, and I bet you they are cut and patch progams. Thank God that is the best we can offer in our nation Nigeris; people like you can claim champions where they are not supposed to.

I want to know why you did not read Computer Science as a course? probably you failed JAMBhuh?

I am a proud, BSC Computer Science (UNN), MSC Advanced Computing (Glasgow) guy. Computer Science is the best that happened to me as a person. Even in solving day to day issues, the course opened my mind.

Think about the flow of logic and reasoning, Think about Scheduling, think about memory and time trade off, think about modules and sub programs and they are tied together, think about classes and object of OOP; you are thinking about daily life.

Few other courses would have offered those knowledge guy.
Good points. All these Aptech and NIIT programmers think programming is the same thing as computing. Most of them do not know the foundation of computing because they are not taught in these Aptech and NIIT mushroom schools. Just tell them to solve a problem of analysing and designing and you will see them lost but do all the work and tell them to code, they will code. That is why they find it difficult rising above their programming level and if they are fortunate to leave programming to desiging, they design bad systems. Programming is not the same as Software development. I once told an Appech/NIIT staff to do a job but he was lost but when i gave it to a Computer science graduate to do, the guy just applied the principles of Queueing theory (Stacks and Queues) that he was taught in school to solve the problem. The fact that a bricklayer can lay blocks does not mean that he is now an Engineer. Did such a bricklayer know what is 'Strength of materials and its applications'?. Check tables created by these so-called Aptech/NIIT programmers who think they are gurus, you will be suprised that they do not know simple database principles or data structures principles not to talk of 'normalization'.

The aluminum guy for the casement windows brought in his quotation for the job and i gave my approval for him to commence work immediately. This is so because compared to other guys, his quotation was more considerate and with genuine intent of been honest in his dealings with me.

See below his quotation;

1. 3 x 2 1/2 (1) @ N15,000 = N15,000

2. 5 X 5 (2) @ N23, 000 = N46,000

3. 5 X 4 (7) @ N23,000 = N161, 000

4. 2 X 2 (5) @ N10,000 = N 50,000

5. 4 X 3 (1 ) @ N23,000 = N23,000

6. 4 X 4 (3) @ N23,000 = N69,000

7. 2 1/2 X 4 (1) @ N15,000 = N15,000

Total = N379,000

The other quote i got which got me crazy looks like this;

1. 5 x 5 (2) @ N26,000 = N52,000

2. 5 X 4 (7) @ N25,000 = N175,000

3. 4 X 4 (3) @ N24,000 = N72,000

4. 4 X 3 (1) @ 22,500 = N22,500

5. 2 1/2 X 4 (1) @ 20,000 = N20,000

6. 2 X 2 (5) @ 12,000 =N60,000

7. 3 X 21/2 (1) @ 16,000 = N16,000

Total = N 417, 000

Both quotes were for the same powder coated Aluminum casement windows using fat tube glazed with 5mm blue reflective glass.

But the curious thing here now is that while the latter added labour charges of 70k, the former was silent on labour and promised to deliver free with his vehicle. Still waiting to see if there will be a shifting of the goal post in the middle of the match.
@Vito, well done for your project. You have done well. My belle just dey sweet for this your selfless act of giving us a preview of the quote you got because i have been cracking my head on how i will go about getting a good costing for my windows when i saw this your post. The guy that did my aluminum roof is based in Benin but he does not do windows but promised to get me his friend that does and because he did a very good job with my roofing at a good price, i said i will give him the windows so that he can sub-contract to his friend so that if the job is poor, i go take army arrest am instead of his friend (lol). Please, i hope you do not mind if i copy and save this your quote for my future reference. Since the time i saw Am Alone's window, i don fall in love with casement window.

Btw, is there a difference in price if somebody decides on having the hinges inside (like in Am Alone) as opposed to having it outside?.

Oga there was no better way to do justice to that question judging from what I have suffered at the end paying attention to such question in the past. The worst thing about your own case is that you've already made up your mind to give your PVC installation to your carpenter, so, ? I'm sorry we dont run that free consultation anymore. People have taught me lessons. The least I can do for you is to advise you to tell yous carpenter to get samples of pieces of PVC as a professional installer so that he can show it to you to choose the colour/design pattern. I have mine-over 20 different colours/designs. If you are not physically present, he should snap them with digital camera and upload to your mail. That is how I serve my clientsand it cost me a fortune to achieve that. Unfortunately, some people enjoy such services from me on this forum for free under the guise of patronising me only for them to get people they see physically or know to get the sample they've chosen from the market and install for them. They 4get that I pay for my internet services, not to talk of the precious time I spend to attend to them. I think I've learnt enough lesson.
You are still missing the point. Somebody ask you to display sample pictures of your work and you reffered the person to a link. I went to the link and i saw only pictures of your POP sample work and i pointed that out to you because you claimed to be expert in POP and PVC. If you claim to be an expert in POP and PVC, then why are you displaying sample pictures of only your POP work?. When i further point this out, you pull down PVC and now you are saying a PVC work should be given to a carpenter. My conculsion is that you do not know how to do a PVC. That is why you are only dislaying POP. I assume further that if PVC is given to you to do, you will give it to a carpenter to do.

Please, do not refer people to that link because it is misleading. It is only POP that is there. I have learnt enough lesson from this that somebody that is not bold enough to display the sample of his PVC work does not know how to do it.

"blessed are those who have not seen but yet believe" that PVC is elementary compared to POP. That's all I can say. That's not to say I dont have PVC picture to display here. Infact my experience on this forum so far has taught me that clients who do business with me dont lay emphasis on pictures, honestly.
You have not done justice to the question. I believe in seeing samples (pysically or otherwise). I was never a fan of POP even when PVC was not around. I went to visit a Rev. Father in his parish and i saw the PVC that was used in his apartment. It was lovely and well done. The colour and layout blended well with the sitting room that it was used for. I will prefer that PVC layout and setting to POP any day.

Thanks. Please, if you not mind, is it possible you send me the guys email or phone contact?. My email is 'migiets@yahoo.com'.

Bros, no vex. I want to buy at Orile because i believe i can get a good bargain there. Since you bought your vitrofied tiles from there, it means you know a vitrified tile. I just want to know how to know a vitrified tile at Orile. Can i just go there and say i want to buy a vitrified tile and they will give me a vitrified tile?.

What is vitrified tile

Vitrified tile is a tile which has been processed in such a way that it has very very low porosity (and water absorption) which make it stain resistant and very strong.

Is vitrified tile better than marble or granite?

Vitrified Tiles have far superior properties compared to marble or natural granite because being a manufactured product their quality is controlled whereas in naturally occurring marble and granite good quality is just a coincidence. Vitrified tiles posses much better mechanical strength, scratch resistance, resistance to acids, alkalies and chemicals, resistance to staining etc compared to marble or natural granite.

Marble has a relatively lower abrasion resistance compared to vitrified tiles. It is calcium carbonate which is strongly attached by Hydrochloric acid which is commonly used in toilet & floor cleaning. It yellows over extended time duration whereas vitrified tiles retain their colour for decades.

Polished natural granite shows several surface defects and a good quality is just a matter of chance whereas vitrified tiles are guaranteed for consistent good quality. Marble laying is very cumberrsom and time consuming whereas vitrified tiles may be laid in a matter of hours and put to use after 48 hours.

Excerpts for this article were taken from www.asiangranito.com

What needs to be studied here is the cost factor. Apparently the Vitrified tiles seem to have an advantage and also durability to command a higher price.

But are we willing to shell that extra money for aesthetics and maintenance sake is the million dollar question.

Another point to consider is where people who would like to buy an apartment can actually tell the builder to use these tiles over conventional flooring techniques.
Considering the environment we lived in where so many fake products are being sold as the original or where 'what is not' is being sold as 'what it is', ow can i identify a vitrified tile at Orile?. I know that when somebody goes to the market and says 'i want vitrified tiles, do you have it', the likely response from the seller is that he/she has it. That is my fear. Would not mind paying a little extra for originality and durability.

For tiles I spent above 500k and I bought 13 bundles of PVC for around 200k . My tiles was a mixture of Italian, Spanish and China. Vitrified is the way to go.
Thanks. Never knew there are vitrified tiles at Orile. I bought some tiles there about 3 years ago. Are vitrified tiles made only from a particular country or are there Italian, Spanish or China vitrified tiles?. On a recent trip to India, i saw some fines and good tiles in the hotel that i stayed and when i asked, i was told that they are vitrified tiles. So i have had this impression that vitrified tiles are from India because what i hear in Nigeria is Italian and Spanish granite and marbel tiles and china tiles but never a strong mention of vitrified tiles.

Bought tiles, toilet fittings and PVC on saturday from a Nairalander at Orile.
@Cinzo. Nice house. Congrats. Please if you do not mind. How much did you get your tiles and PVC?. Iam about to move to the stage of tiling and PVC for my project. I want to use PVC in all the rooms. I have never liked POP. The guy that installed my roof said he is also into PVC installation. So i have not yet decided whether to buy or tell him to buy and install.

My brother-in-law, who is a tiler has told me to buy Vetrified files when iam buying tiles. What do you think.
