Back to classroom to ask @Spyder et al a question on plumbing.

When doing plumbing, how is the toilet waste (from toilet) and used water (from bathroom, kitchen etc) distributed?. What i mean is that do they go into the same soakaway or to diffferent soakaway or is it that the toilet waste goes into the soakaway while the used water from bathroom, kitchen etc is allowed to follow into an adjoining gutter.

What do you think of the idea whereby hollow blocks are used and then solid blocks are used for the final layer?. With this, you do not need to do a concrete layer on top of the final hollow block layer.
I ask the this question earlier but nobody has thrown any perspective on it.

@NL1960: do you have a particular reason why you plastered the downstairs first?
There is no particular reason. The work is still on-going. I took these pictures when i went home for xmas. I was told that the most difficult is the plastering of the decking so they decided to plaster that first. That was what led to the plastering of the entire downstairs.

Downstairs:
Large sitting room
dinning area
kitchen
store
visitor's toilet
visitor's room (ensuite)

Upstairs
large master bedroom (ensuite)
moderate family living room
large room (ensuite)

Good job! Abeg make you post cost breakdown of the roof.
The 0.45mm Bush Green oven baked step tiles aluminum cost me in total about 780k. I got four quotations. Two gave almost N1m while the other two gave about 780k. I became confused and then i went back to revise the lesson notes i made from Oga Spyder class. So i contacted the aluminum company i suspected they are going to buy from. The aluminum company sent their own guys there to measure and sent me a quote of about 800k. That was the tie breaker because i just called one of the guys and gave him the job. The 20k differential was because of labour. While the guy quoted 50k for labour, the aluminum company quoted about 80k for labour.

As for wood, i just sent about 300k to my brother that is handling the project for everything. He is a logger. So i did not actually buy the wood from the market. He went into the bush to fell and cut the best wood. It is a red wood and it is considered the hardest, strongest and best wood around. You can see the redness on the wood frame.

It means that the wooden supports for the ceiling will be done. They will not hang the ceiling boards because I have not yet decided the type of ceiling I will use. Some rooms will def carry POP.
Thanks. Somehow, i have never liked POP. It has never appealed to me. I want to use PVC for the main sitting room, family living room and all other rooms of my duplex. I hope iam not commiting an interior finishing crime by opting to use PVC for the main sitting room.

Roofing woodwork workmanship settled at N130,000. This amount will include the wooden skeleton, the ceiling noggings, the outer scaffold labour, the ceiling installation. Roofing starts tomorrow morning.
What does this really mean?. Does it mean that the ceiling boards will be installed as well?. If so, what type of ceiling boards are you using?.

The thing is that, the mosquito net is the sliding type.
So all you need do is slide and open the casement and slide back. . . .

Thanks. Is this approach the only way of doing it?. If there are other ways, please state it.

Yes Bros. You are right. My non sliding window AKA casement window have it own hook/hinges but it is hidden so that you can't see it from the outside and from the inside as well. . . .

You know that window cost quite a some of money - lol!!!!!!!
Thanks. Are the non-sliding windows with hook/hinges outside also called casement windows?. In addition, do they cost less than this your hidden hook/hinges?. Need to take a decidion on what i want to use for mine as that is the next stage after the on-going interior and exterior pastering.

I know windows cost quite a lot but i beleive that if i could do a step tiles aluminum roof, then i should be able to afford a medium range window design. wink wink wink.

@Am Alone. I have noticed that some non-sliding aluminum windows that i have been seeing outside have a hook outside but your do not have it and yet yours is non-sliding. I had always thought that the outside hook is needed to hang the window. Please can you throw more light on this.

Roofing of this house beckons, is Spyder ready? Money scarce o! Lolz
No worry. Money go come. When i started my project this year, i never thought i will get to the stage of roofing but with God's grace i have been able to roof it and iam now considering plastering it before xmas. Moreover, when i was seeing the price being quoted for roofing, fear catch me but with what i leanrt from your 'roofing a 4-bedroom bungalow', i was able to roof it. I went as far as getting five (5) different quotes for .45mm and .55mm step tiles aluminum. Btw, na your bush green colour i finally choose.

Am happy with some info from this thread, but we should make proper inquiry about product before buying them.

Am Alone, the truth is that you will not and never get a 1st grade spain tile from the market not possible u can only get them from company here in Nigeria
and again about the china door, most sold in the market are Nigeria market quality for the Nigeria masses that why I never patronise them cause it a must low quality product. Wooden door are better imorted or local and are good u can either use mahogany or mazonia not too expensive but has quality.

Am going crazy about my projet now the finishing is consuming more than I expected and my problem is that am doing it to my taste but it for let
I will in my next reply upload some pics and start will expense brakedown and will make available my source for material and product used.

The roof will be install from thursday but plastering start on thursday plumbering work begin today
How many bedroom is your project and what is the plastering costing you or how many bags of cement are you using?. Iam about to start the plastering of my house first before doing the plumbing in order to take advantage of the present static price of cement and with the removal of fuel subsidy, price of cement might increase next year.

Below are the pictures of the Sitting room, bathroom and window (decided to include this because of the bulgary).

^^^kikeige, that's lot of space to cover. I will suggest porcelain tiles for the high traffic areas and ceramics for less traffic area. Porcelain tiles are more rugged making them ideal for harsher applications such as flooring. Also, because of their higher density, porcelain tiles are less likely to absorb moisture (0.5%) which makes them more durable and more resistant to staining. See attached pictures.

Check your email for more details.

To all the Tile gurus in the house:

I have noticed that the tiling in the bathroom and kitchen here were done to the roof. Where iam presently staying, the bathroom and kitchen tiling was not done to the roof. After completing the roofing of my house, i intend to move to tiling. So what is the norm?. Is the bathroom and kitchen supposed to be tiled halfway or tiled to the roof. Please give reasons.

Btw, @Am Alone, i have fallen in love with that your black tile. Might consider it for my sitting room and master bedroom.

There's more to doing your German floor now other than pounding yam, walking or crawling on it. The first is to contain moisture from coming through the concrete slab and the second is to support the foundation.

Usually, there may be pressure to move on with the project immediately after the filling stage so as to avoid delays and possible additional costs. But this can have adverse effect on your building as soil can become very heavy and exert extreme force on the foundation walls when it is wet and left for too long.

How?
Block or brick foundation walls are pushed outward due to pressure from the filling sand as it expands due to plasticity nature of the soil. The soil will swell when it gets wet, and it will shrink when it dries. This swelling and shrinking will WORK the weight of the structure down into the ground. Over time, the foundation will remain more settled than it has risen, leaving you with an unlevelled house.

If you can maintain the moisture of the soil under the foundation at a constant level, there will be no swelling and shrinking, but this is only possible if you can take pain to do the german floor now. Although, it is not compulsory.

Think of how easy it is to knock off stack of blocks without weight on top,

_______________________

For me, I'll complete one stage before moving to the others.
Gbam. Well said. A building project is a stage by stage process.

@Ogbefi_007. If you want to do decking before doing german floor, i hope you will not also say you want to do the german floor after wood work or roofing. Abeg, do german floor first before decking or any other stage.

^^^ Okay NL1960, you have heard from Am Alone, the .55 is thicker than the .45, of course the price is more. You can use the .55 to keep your mind at rest, in my own house it is settled that its going to be the .45 that will be used. Not only for economic reasons but I know that unless my kids start playing hockey on top of the roof, there is not supposed to be any leakages. For my clients that will ask for .55, I will use it for them as well as other specifications and special orders they will make.
Am Alone:
I think spyder said it all.

Just to had a little to it.
If you are using step tiles, I learnt the best gauge of aluminium to use is 0.55mm

but for normal aluminium roof, you can use any gauge(evn 0.3 can work it the building is kind o high)

So i learnt o
I think i have settled for 0.45mm bush green step tiles. Apart from economic reasons, i do not expect my kids or anybody to be playing table tennis on top of the roof. Na only birds go dey petch on top and any day a bird petches and leaves a gaping hole, then that bird is an 'Airforce Bird' that is carrying a caterpillar on its feet and i will use Holy Ghost fire to bind and cast it. grin grin grin.

^^ @NL1960, why are you saying either .45 or .55, have you not made up your mind yet on the type to use? Nice house sha.
Pocket is making the decision difficult. Am Alone's .55mm is nice. So also the .45mm that you used in the 4-bedroom bungalow that you roofed. So just wondering if i can use .45mm and use the savings between it and .55mm to do other things. What do you think?. Is there really an advantage of .55mm over .45mm?. This retirement home is in the village. So i do not expect much wear and tear from usage.
