@sisqology: Mail me at numberone at greenspek dot com. Use "Nairaland" as the subject so I'll know its you. Cheers.
ProgrammingRe: Please Which Programming Language Does Nigerian Institutions Use ? by NumberOne2(m): 1:49pm On Apr 04, 2011
@ sisqology: My web address is www.greenspek.com. Now, that is my company website. If you can make something that highlights what you have done or can do (on a personal scale) that will be nice. You DO NOT need to register a company.

My company site is SIMPLE (though I'm working on an update), you may want to do something more COMPLEX that will appeal to folks that view the site.
It will be a cool way to sell yourself and an interested IT company MAY contact you for an offer. Hope this helps.

Dude, since it isn't an employment offer, I'm not surprised with the "no response" to the thread.

If you need a JAVAME developer, I am available and will partake in your project if its worth the while and challenging enough. Unfortunately, I live in Abuja. But since there are no monetary rewards, we should be able to communicate online. View my apps at www.greenspek.com.

Thanks bro, @number 1, I really luv your words of encouragement. So,as a 'first pratice' project, what do u suggest i work on first
Design a personal site to market yourself. Just like companies have company site, design a site that shows visitors what you can do, and what software or programming languages you are good at. More like a really "pimped up" CV.

Simple 3, 4 or 5 page site, ABOUT, SERVICES, CONTACTS, PROJECTS etc. You know what I mean. The PROJECTS can be sites or apps you have done in the past or stuff you are working on or hope to work on. SERVICE are languages you can work with PHP, HTML, JAVASCRIPT etc.

When you are done and its good, then you can host it. There are domains that host free. If its satisfactory to me, I can host it on a sub domain on my site free.

This is pretty basic stuff so it should be a walk in the park. One last thing, try Have fun while doing it, it will make room for creativity.
Tech JobsRe: Looking For Web Developers (php+mysql, Java) For Hire: by NumberOne2(m): 5:57pm On Mar 27, 2011
We are a web and wireless application development company with lots of new technologies to play with. We are setting up a development team that will work on a series of portals and mobile related projects. We need committed and serious people who are ready to get their hands dirty with technology and exposure to new systems to apply, Just leave a note on this topic for me and we'll take it on from there.
Here is a tip: When making such posts why not put the company name, phone number or web address at least, so your offer doesn't sound fraudulent. If you are an individual, no problem. Just leave a number or email addy.

Just a tip.

Then, another question; which editor is the best, when it comes to web or which is advisable, i saw a frnd using dreamwever(i hate that), i use notepad, and textpad for js, but if i could get something better for all?
Which ever suits you. I'm more of an old school guy so I use notepad. I just type in the codes and refresh the browser. Dreamwaver, is great if your can learn using it. The Bottom line is to get the job done and have fun while doing it.

Most advanced programmers you see only got there by practice. If you want to be a GOOD programmer, you have to do a lot of practice. If you learn a language, try to do some projects on it. Put the skills to use and you will surprise yourself.
ProgrammingRe: Please Which Programming Language Does Nigerian Institutions Use ? by NumberOne2(m): 1:58pm On Mar 25, 2011
Please, people tell me, is pascal outdated, and if it is, if a beginner like me is about to start something, what is it advisable to work on please??
The language you learn depends on what kind of apps you want to design. If you want web based apps, try PHP, ASP and the likes. If you like stand alone apps, try C++, Java and the likes. I'll advice you start with a simple language like HTML which gives you the basics of web design. Then graduate to Java Script for starters.

Just an advice.
Science/TechnologyRe: Meet Nigerian 28-year-old ‘rocket Inventor’ by NumberOne2(m): 1:52pm On Mar 25, 2011
As much as i appreciate his ingenuity but a technology has been perfected for production of Rocket, preferably he should study the current technology and improve on it's weak point. If facebook was copying Google, it wont be where it is now. It's just like trying to invent a car when we have cars like BMW and Benz that are light years ahead, Originality is the key word. Let the government give him schorlarship to study the current technology on Rocket building.
If rocket technology has been perfected, how come astronauts still die in rocket crashes or disintegration. Let me enlighten you, NASA is winding down. The US government is transferring space technology to PRIVATE hands. The likes of Richard Brandson are looking at organizing space trips/excursions for wealthy individuals. Transferring to private hands is less expensive and the US government doesn't have to carry the cost of failed missions.

This is the same approach the US military has. Private companies design their equipment, planes, submarines and all. Of course the military has to monitor them closely so that they don't sell the technology to another country. That is why you hear of the likes of Haliburton or Boeing when the US military is mentioned. They design most of their equipment.

I'm sorry to say, but I can only see countries like China and Brazil which are looking at space travel now picking these boys up. Nigeria and unfortunately MOST Nigerians don't have time for this kind of innovation. Its sad.
Science/TechnologyRe: Meet Nigerian 28-year-old ‘rocket Inventor’ by NumberOne2(m): 11:20am On Mar 25, 2011
This is VERY nice. However, the mistake we make in this country is that we expect the government to sponsor talents like these. WRONG. Outside our shores, its the private sector that carries such individuals in a bid to monetize their talents.
Leave Nigerian Government alone. They CANNOT help. My advice to them is to seek private sponsors like local auto manufacturers or even some Chinese business men.

For those that think it isn't a new technology, well it isn't. However this is the SICK mentality that is killing this country.
Some say Nigerian shouldn't bother making cars because there are too many car companies in the world. Now let me ask, If the likes of KIA and GEELY said, whats the point making cars, the world already has BENZ, VW, TOYOTA, GM, FORD etc lets try something else. Where would KIA have been today?

This defeatist mentality that "until you are the first to do it, it cannot work" is very bad. Even if someone has done it, try to do it better. Do NOT discourage those doing it. China is making phones that have been made by advanced country for years. Which phones are more common in Nigeria?

Let them build the rockets, its a step in the right direction. That how NASA started. I have learn in life to CLAP for those that are doing things that I can't do. These guys are doing something that most of us never dreamed Nigerians in our own soil can do. Even if you cannot sponsor them, at least clap for them.

@ kheme, Thanks for the tip. I've put the redirect, and I must say it does look smarter. I left it that way initially so that Google and other web crawlers could record it.
I think crawlers may not bother saving a redirect page (I haven't verified if its true). This will be bad especially if its the index page of the site.

ProgrammingRe: How Do I Start An It Company In Abuja Nigeria? by NumberOne2(m): 3:04pm On Mar 22, 2011
What aspect of IT. Hardware or Software? Sales and maintenance or Consultancy services. IT is pretty wide. Unfortunately, when you mention IT most folks think its just programmers and web design.

First set down what you want to do and stick with it. That is ofcourse, after registering with CAC and getting an office space to operate from.
I just moved to Abuja from Benin. I'm a programmer. I'm still trying to figure out the city. For now, I share an office space with a marketing company that helps me with clients (we agreed that they will get their cut if they bring any. They haven't yet).
Most times I work at home. Its more convenient.

Most IT guys here look for Government contracts. I think its a long shot. There is a lot of business here, but its a hustle like any place else. I like to stick with the theory of "It is easier to get 1 dollar from a million people than to get a Million dollars from one person"

Hope this helps.
ProgrammingRe: Please Which Programming Language Does Nigerian Institutions Use ? by NumberOne2(m): 2:53pm On Mar 22, 2011
Nigeria just like anyother nation DOESN'T have any particular language it adheres to. The market is wide, Java, C, Basic, PHP, the list is endless. The important thing is learning a language that will allow you design the kind of apps you need/want.

Facebook runs on PHP. I doubt many FB users know or care about that. I don't think folks that use software care the language it was written in, they just want an app that works.

Personally on the web, PHP works wonders; for stand alone applications, I stick to Java. Java sucks on the web.
CareerRe: NIIT: Are They Worth It? by NumberOne2(m): 10:38pm On Mar 14, 2011
I must say that OVER half the people that go IT schools have NO business there. The band wagon effect which is typical of Nigerians is the problem. You hear of someone that went to NIIT and is working with some big company and you feel that's the place to be. Or maybe you want to pass time while waiting for NYSC. Good.

IT is about practicals. Unfortunately, our university system is more of theory. An engineering student that cannot fix an car? Who are we kidding?

If you want to get into IT business, you have to be ready to get down and dirty. Its NOT a place to get a Certificate and wave it around hoping to get a dream job. Its 100% practical. Its either you know it or you don't.

I was in NIIT in '07 (on scholarship @ half price), in my Java class we were 21 when we started. Half way through the course we were 8, at the end only 3 graduated. There was a pregnant woman in my class who had NO business with Java. She just wanted to SPICE UP her CV. Wasted her husbands 150K in the process.

IT may be the "in thing" but it  ISN'T for everyone. If you aren't ready to get down and dirty, keep your money or invest it. There's a global recession, this is NOT the time to waste cash.

Who ever wrote this blog is a liar and is simply looking for cheap internet traffic to boost his/her google ads revenue. I've seen the movie Black Gold and I can say that Vivica Fox and most of those actors listed are NOT in it.
There is nothing new about the movie that Nigerians didn't know. How Chiefs in the Niger Delta take the monies from oil companies only to enrich themselves. Its just corruption, plain and simple.
How can anyone be threatened for making a movie on corruption? Haven't others made such movies? Even some against the police.
Please let us be careful the kind of blogs we get information from. Go to newspaper websites and stop patronizing gossip site.
PhonesRe: Blackberry 8320 App Error by NumberOne2(m): 9:15am On Mar 14, 2011
You don't need the Desktop Manager to install the OS. The OS update software acts like a Desktop manager. Its just like installing a windows software. It takes you on a step by step procedure.
If you need the Desktop Manager, you can download it from the BB website also, but you dont need it for OS update.
PhonesRe: Blackberry 8320 App Error by NumberOne2(m): 8:36am On Mar 14, 2011
I've had this problem once, almost made me regret buying a BB. However, you don't have to be a genius to tackle it.

What is the OS version of your BB? Its most likely you recently installed an app which has compatibility issues with your device. Try deleting recently installed apps and do a battery pull (hard reset).

If this doesn't work, you'll have to reinstall your OS. To do that, visit BB website and search for OS version of your phone and the Network you use. The OS versions are different on different networks. e.g. There is an OS version for Glo, MTN etc. Download the one for your current network, install it on your PC, plug your BB to your PC via USB and follow the intructions on the PC OS update software.

Make sure NOTHING interrupts the OS update until its complete. Also make sure your BB battery is fully charged before you begin. Charge it overnight if your have to.

I took a look at android and glanced a few books and I must say it seems interesting. Reminds me of Java.
The only problem I see is having to create apps that will run on all devices irrespective of screen size or memory capacity. I say this because different companies are embracing it and they all have different device profiles.
Definitely worth looking at.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria To Commence Islamic Banking Soon – Sanusi by NumberOne2(m): 11:25pm On Feb 09, 2011
Islamic Banking, Sharia Banking, Christian Banking, Amadioha Banking, The important thing is to get it right. In this country, we are quick to adopt so called "innovations" but remain unable to sustain it.
A lot of hype was done about micro finance institutions. I know folks who have lost monies to these micro finance banks. I'm NOT saying micro finance is bad, but I understand there are more that 600 of them in Nigeria. How can they be regulated?

I can wake up one day and start my own "micro finance" and run away with peoples money.

We have enough financial institutions already, why not build on them and improve them? Some Commercial banks were in debt and need "bailouts" from tax payers money. Now a  lot of bankers have the sacked and their stock market shares are nothing to write home about.

CBN wants to regulate: Commercial banks (25), Micro Finance banks (over 600) and now want to add Islamic banks? How can they all be regulated? I see it as just another scam on Nigerians.

Micro Finance is copying Bangladesh model, I wonder which model we will copy for Islamic banking.

Malam Sanusi, why not create the Nigerian model? We have a unique society here,  stop bringing more workload for regulators.

I don't know the business model of Google for selling android apps, but I know that of Apple. I'll be glad if more light is shed on the Android market payment.

If Android payment requires a paypal account like blackberry then, you'll have a problem cos Nigerians aren't welcome on paypal. However, there are ways around paypal but its illegal and wouldn't encourage it.

Have you stopped to think what will happen to the staff of these banks your bad mouthing. Please if you are a former employee and was sacked, this is not the way to carry out your revenge.

I don't know who gave you the post of CBN Governor to make such announcement on his behalf. Go to CBN website and get you info straight. Its folks like you that makes IT experts want to censor the internet.
