Nigeria needs world class cities. We’re the biggest economy in Africa for crying out loud. We’re also a top 10 producer of oil in the world.

We should be competing with South African cities..

My only other question is is there a Kenyan site where Nigerians are in Kenya's business like this lol? What's the point on going on a nairaland forum and acting shocked when Nigerians defend their country. What's the point on going on a Nigerian forum and berating Nigeria 24/7. You guys keep saying you want to change your subject but you can't. You need to prove to Nigeria that your country is better, but why? Most Nigerians here wouldn't be visiting Kenya. There is no purpose? Why is it so important to prove that your country is better? Are you getting paid to promote tourism in Nigeria ? You claim you are here to defend your country from Nigerians, but to be bluntly honest Kenya hardly gets mentioned in nairaland. Nigerians are too busy cursing Nigeria left and right to really think of other African Nations like that. If you want an honest and objective debate why not try the Nigerians actually living in Kenya? I don't even think Nigerians think of African countries like that aside from SA and the ones nearby. I would imagine this is the same with Kenya, so why so many of you guys here?

It's the biggest forum in Africa. Just like our entertainment industry dominates the continent, nairaland will as well. No worries, it's natural(predestination). Other African countries on Nairaland shouldn't worry you. It's exciting. We get different perspectives. I want nairaland to even grow more, and see countries like Congo, Tanzania, Sudan, Angola... etc

I won't be surprised if nairaland becomes more pan African in the future. It's inevitable...

Nice writeup OP.

Good facts presented. We are simply too broke to undertake both Infrastructure and People development. We need to grow our economy first and then focus on social issues like human capital next. We have no money.

How do you grow your economy? By investing in human capital and infrastructure. The op's thinking is faulty. Investors are not so eager to invest in a country that lacks human capital and infrastructure. And you need investors to grow an economy...

Excuse my misinformation grin. So African countries that assemble cars can't export them under this AFCTFA?

https://af.reuters.com/article/topNews/idAFKBN1GZ0TK-OZATP

Very very real development has happened in Kenya-so real in fact Kenya of 2018 and Kenya 2010 are 2 entirely different countries. Our poverty rate is now in the low 30s. A lot of work ofc must still be done but at this rate Kenyan poverty will be history within my lifetime.

That's good! Makes me happy. A country like Kenya shouldn't have anything to do with poverty. Meanwhile, I hear poverty is increasing in Nigeria cry

What are the chances that your leadership will get things right in 10-20 yrs and make Nigerian industries favorably compete? It doesnt look like it even in 100 yrs. Things involving governance in your country carefully follow the law of entropy. They only get worse.

But you are right, Kenya cant wait to gain unfettered access to that giant market. You need to open up and test the waters, might even turn out to be good. Just a point of note, your argument borrows straight from the Tanzanian school of thought. They have been opposed to total integration of the EAC because they want to join it at a time when their economy is at par with Kenya's. So we have been on this wild goose chase for decades. If you think there is a time when you will be ready, forget it ! It will be much worse if (even if by sheer luck) the AfCFTA works because it has the potential to make economies in the member states catapult themselves due to the market, esp their industries. In 20 yrs the industries in most African countries might've become too strong for you. Imagine what a country like SA, Egypt or Kenya would do with a 1.2 billion market. This is something that any sane person should support. Your leaders are so short sited that some are worried about lost tariffs instead of seeing the bigger picture.

Btw, the speech made by Obasanjo has to be the best. He had no chills for Bubu and Co. Brainy old man !

As democracies become more stable and mature they increase in good governance and less corruption. Just look where America was. European officials came to visit America and called it a barbaric society, a society where there were very two extremes of poverty and wealth. America aslo had some heavy corruption back then, on the level Nigeria faces.

If things don't get better in the next 40 years, Nigeria will break apart, we're already seeing signs. Different countries will form from that entity we call Nigeria if care isn't taken. Nigerians want progress and that seems to be lacking in the Nigeria of today.

Well economists have placed Nigeria as to where China was 30, 40 years back. They predict Nigeria will be awake to its potential as the Giant of Africa(and potential superpower) in the next 30,40 years just like China has done.

You have a 180 million market and you are given the offer of 1.2 billion and still you choose the 180 million? Dont let Trump deceive you. Africans need to come together at least for once and see what they can do.

You understand Nigeria's population is about 1/6 of Africa's population? And one thing you guys are missing out. What if some Asian country, let's say China comes and signs a FTA with let's say South Africa, China would just import goods to SA, then export from SA to the whole of Africa duty free. That would kill Africa and would only benefit SA and China. The AU is moving too quickly with this agreement. They should wait.

Look at this pot calling the kettle black.

Do you know the meaning of GDP?
Were you taught economics in the relevant learning institutions or is it that your tutor misled you by default?
Don't raise some compromises here.

GDP is the total income production of all goods and services produced by citizens in a particular country irrespective of their nationalities.

So how does your services outside your country constitutes part of the Gross Domestic Product?
Those services which you guys remit to other countries forms part of the Gross National Product GNP,not GDP neither.
And as for the case of south Africa, its the only country that's truly and verifiably known to be the real giant of the continent, even the world knows that, you can dispute it with your own bitterness and salivate jealousy and also pluck some egoism to give yourselves many titles as possible,no one will be damn bothered.
Don't be a learned fool with your statement of model thinking of 'i know everything'.

South Africa is on the decline. It’s lost the shine it once had.. It was never referred to as a giant but rather an outlier, an example of an advanced economy on the African continent. Nigeria’s the sleeping giant just like China was decades ago. I can’t wait for it to wake up.

Nigeria (GDP) is was worth $405.10 billion and Nigeria is Owing $287 billion.
Nigeria is owing China $65 billion at the end of December 2016.
Today we are owing China + $72 billion .
42% off money you spent in Nigeria go to pay the Debt back.
So want good is the GDP.

America owes more than its gdp. There’s nothing wrong in borrowing as long as it’s productive

This Agreement will grow all african countries but how quick people grow will depend on how countries package themsalve.. It will push Entrepreneurs and Investors to different heights because they will be dealing with much larger population and different dynamics.

If Nigerians can't trade with other countries in Africa they should also remain in their country and make it prosperous. Currently you are running away from your shithole and yet you claim you want to make it better.

Let Nigeria fix its self first. Nigeria is simply scared that we be at disadvantage with other nations like Egypt, Morocco, SA(if they joined), and Kenya. We got to being the largest economy by oil, a model that had proven not to be sustainable. We have begun the diversification process and it must not be hindered by the free trade..

What you don't know is that America comprises of 52 states.. Africa has 54 states.. what made america America is coming together of all the states to make one market.. Mexico refused and right now they are dying to cross to America.

Despite Nigeria having the largest economy in Africa, Africas GDP is still ajoke compared to world major economies.. We need one Africa to expand our abilities.

Nigerian companies have agreat potential to sell to the whole of africa and especially West Africa. The agreement also protect the infant industry of a country where by only movement of 90% of goods is allowed and 10% infant industries to be protected..

Nigeria has minor issues that your politicians make them look like mountain.
In 2002 Kenya had power rationing, poor healthcare, poor infrastructure, lack of piped water... 10years later we started exporting power to our neighbours, healthcare greatly improved not to mention infrastructure.

WAKE UP GIANTS
.

If i was kenya in 2002, i wouldn't have signed this free trade agreement. I would have made Kenya wait till its infrastructure was in place and could be competitive in exporting.

Kenya of today would benefit from such deal. Your infrastructure has been greatly improved.
Nigeria doesn't feel competitive enough to sign such deal yet. You don't want a population of 200 million to become a dumping ground. That would spell doom.

Would a country like Kenya dare to even compete with China in exporting goods? Of course not, Kenya wouldn't feel competitive enough.

TayserMahiri:

Yes I do.
Why are you people opposed to it?

Nigerian companies don't want it. They don't want cheaper goods coming into the country to compete with them. I lean to the side of supporting them. Other African countries have better electricity and better infrastructure which makes for far far cheaper goods than those made in Nigeria.

Let's not mention the fact that manufacturing only contributes 9% to our gdp. That's pretty low. Nigeria has to protect its infant industries and allow them to grow before opening up and allowing competition. We don't want a situation wherein our infant industries are killed off by cheap imports like what happened to our textile industries wherein cheap imports from China ruined them.

Nigeria has to follow a protectionist policy for now and close itself up for a while. What we're doing isn't abnormal. Developed countries of today did the same when they were developing such as America.

In the next 10 to 20 years Nigeria should be able to open up and sign such agreement as long as our infrastructure is improved and our industrial base becomes larger and stronger.

Many greedy African nations want Nigeria to open up and sign this agreement because of its huge market, the largest in Africa. For now Nigeria's large population is large enough to sustain and grow our industries and doesn't in reality need this agreement.

On a side note Nigeria might succumb to pressure from other African nations to sign the agreement(i hope they don't, at least for now).

if you look at America now, they're doing the same thing. They're gradually promoting a protectionist policy headed by President Trump. They're increasing tariffs on steel and iron because the American steel industry has been ruined by cheap imports from largely Canada.

The thing is Dangote's a smart guy. He has hindsight. He invests in the profitable industries of the future that other investors are too afraid to invest in. Thus he's the first to get into an industry then others follow. Many complain he's a monopolist like Rockefeller but not necessarily; Dangote was just there first.

I really want Dangote to get into the steel industry. It could be a major game changer for Nigeria.

Then they can buy our refined oil. We have an overcapacity.

No need, the richest man in Africa is building the biggest oil refinery in Africa, 650,000 barrels per day, one of the biggest in the world. It'll be over Nigeria's demand and thus the excess will be exported. It'll be ready in 2019.

He's also building one the largest petrochemical complexes in the world.

There's also another refinery being built(250,000 per day) by another guy.

The plan is that in the next few years, Nigeria will become a major petrochemical and fertilizer hub in Africa.

I still want them to automate our banking and Stock Markets so young boys and girls in this country can trade on the real forex and not the scam and MMM. No point disputing the fact about Nigeria's lack of natural beauty. Especially the tropical and sub-equatorial South of the country which is mostly flat, densely-forested lowlands (and swampy wetlands) where every wild space is overgrown with thick weeds, the water is turbid and discolored (even without man-made pollution which is considerable), big-game wildlife is scarce or extinct, population distribution is dense, and climate is unpleasantly hot and humid.
The North of the country has far more beautiful natural landscape with its hills and open savannah grasslands and woodlands and you can better appreciate leisurely outdoor activities.

Apart from the lack of natural beauty, Nigerians aren't particularly artistic people (our religious madness contributes to a culture that doesn't value humanistic pursuits). Architecture is rather perfunctory with no real artistry or attention to detail. Council housing estates in the UK or even in Soweto in South Africa where the poor and unemployed and welfare scroungers live are better better designed than many high-brow areas of Lagos where even the richest live. grin Don't even get me started on the public infrastructure, either decaying or non-existent (no central sewage, no public waterworks, open gutters/drains, pot-holed roads, no rail etc). Nigeria's infrastructural deficit is absolutely massive, estimated at about $3trn. grin I'm not sure why this thread keeps dragging on interminably. The premise is correct that Kenya is more developed than Nigeria. Anyone who has ever been to Kenya knows that.

It always amazes me that a simple thing like piped water in Nigeria is elusive. Instead we must build boreholes and buy sachet water. I wonder do those politicians ever feel shame. I mean a top 10 oil producer in the ranks of Saudi Arabia and UAE yet our infrastructure is far less developed. If you look at Nigeria closely you will just weep.Nigeria should have passed the level of South Africa by now. The world knows of Nigeria’s immense potential, but for now we’re stuck in the dark ages.

MotoringNigeria:
Police in Tempe, Arizona, are investigating a fatal crash involving an autonomous Uber vehicle, according to a report from ABC15.

The report claims Uber’s self-driving car was in autonomous mode when it hit a woman early Monday morning. She was walking in the street outside designated crosswalks, and later died from her injuries at a local hospital.

According to ABC15, an Uber spokesperson told the station the company is aware of the incident and is cooperating with the investigation. Uber also issued the following statement to TechCrunch: “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident.”

The New York Times reports that Uber is suspending autonomous vehicle testing in Tempe, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Toronto.

Though this isn’t the first accident to involve an autonomous vehicle, Uber’s self-driving car may be the first to kill a pedestrian.

More incidents like these might erode the public’s hard-won trust in the vehicles, and may slow their widespread adoption. That may ultimately be bad news, because experts believe that autonomous cars will save lives by eliminating the cause of 94 percent of traffic accidents: human error.

We will update this article as more information is available.
