Kobojunkie: Why would we need to free all those presently behind bars for committing crimes in order to obtain a system that ensures all criminals are prosecuted, no matter their political or economic affiliations? We already have a system -- We have solid laws, all that is wrong at the moment is that it is being used by those in power to advance their own course and punish those who do not ride along with them. Good! then lets fight the real battle and stop the show of sympathy for the likes of Ibori. Let's address the real problem, make enough noise so that the law will be enforced on all the guilty. My grouse is when we start making the likes of Ibori looks like victims instead of looking at the likes of IBB, Odili, Tinubu & co as benefactors of unfair system. The question should be 'Why cant you arrest IBB, Odili, Obj & co if you can arrest Ibori?' instead of 'why did you arrest Ibori when others are still free?'- Emphasis should be on those who are still free not on those already arrested. |

I doubt you will find one person who truly support selective justice in this country. Everyone wants all the criminals behind bars if possible most of them to be summarily executed.
But unfortunately we do not live in an ideal society, and I agree with you on the need to strive for perfection but while we are at it, we cannot discard the present epileptic Jungle Justice system.
To do that will mean we should free all those presently behind bars, give presidential pardon to all those who have completed their jail terms and wait till we have a perfect judicial system.
I support your fight against selective justice, but let us use it to call for the arrest of other criminals and not to use it as an excuse to free those ones presently facing the law. |

pro01: That's the unfortunate situation. I do not pity the masses at all; after all, every country has the leadership it deserves. All the lazy and gullible masses know how to do is to sheepishly join the orchestrated, hare-brained, and ultimately short-lived jubilation anytime a random Tafa or Alams or Ibori or Lucky Igbinedion gets a 'slap on the wrist' for falling out with the powers that be. Little do they know that the joke is on them (i.e. the masses). When they are ready to end corruption and bring about good government they know EXACTLY what to do. Pitiable lot; maybe Angel Gabriel will come down from Heaven to 'bell the cat' for them. So the leadership is corrupt, the followers are lazy, gullible, may be more corrupt than the leadership. Hence the people revolution you advocated for is unrealistic and you have no room for gradual process; what other option do you have or is Nigeria doomed? |

Wake up. Why do you think GL is pushing for electoral reforms? In one man one vote, the North will realise they are in the minority
Also the One North concept no longer exist, states like Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa now know better |

Sagamite: @ Kgdavid
You must be careful with what you read into singular events in a story.
So what if he took him to his first soccer school? So what if he got him a scholarship?
It is the frequency of activities that matters, not when he feels I want to be good, and expects praise for what he SHOULD be doing for his child.
Something tells me that if M.E had this frequency, his heart will not be this hard towards the man, no matter wetin im mama tell am.
Let me give you a personal example.
I have one useless family member, an uncle. From when he was young, he refused to study or learn a trade even though my papa was pushing him and paying for anything. This Arrow, got a woman pregnant before I was even born and then left the mother with the kid.
My dad took his nephew in from the age of 3 to ensure he gets the best so the mother starts to set up a life of hers (she later remarried and had other kids, but she visited very frequently).
The kid never set eyes on his father till he was in his thirties. The man just disappeared and was enjoying himself as no one knew where he was. I bet he had a lot of kids he must have abandoned in the process as at least one woman has gone to an elderly granny to demand funds from "the family".
When he finally reappeared, and the Arrow was residing in boys quarters, he got another younger woman pregnant and born 3 more kids, he could not afford to take care of. He stayed and acted father for a while and the kids knew him. But he has disappeared again and abandoned them with the mother who is a stark illiterate. My dad, a pensioner has had to take the 3 boys in again, and it is us abroad that are funding their upkeep and schooling. Pretty sharp kids , still all under 12, youngest is about 5.
I am sure the Arrow is someone producing more kids, now when in future he is old, I am sure he will be able to recant some period he provided for this 3 kids and say "he is the father, so they should take care of him when he is no more able" (which is soon as he is getting close to late 60s). Is he worthy based on his singular events that were not frequent? Where was he when the 4 year old broke his leg when he was jumping from walls? Who took him to hospital for surgery?
Me, I have told family that "NO chance in HELL will I have give him any funds when he is old"! He is a wicked and selfish Arrow that I will watch as he suffers. Sagamite, I have been down a similar road too, I made similar resolution, but when the need arose, i couldn't keep my resolution or turn a blind eyes. i was just glad I could do something. But i ensured he learnt his lessons and I made him realised he didn't deserve what he was getting. I just couldn't let him made me heartless as he was (may be still is). |

Outstrip: You are saying for humanity's sake but his father feels that he deserves it simply because he donated spermatozoa. I still say the man is unrepentant. If Michael wants to do it because he wants to then fine. I will not judge him. I was not there when he had to watch his mother hustle and struggle to make ends meet for 5 children. The father is going to the public trying to make a son look bad after spending most of the child's childhood making him feel like a reject. The man should show some humility. I am thinking that they offered him some money to tell the story. The man just does not get it and at this age I don't think he ever will. Good luck to them. we all agreed the father was wrong, failed, neglected his duties for whatever reason he had, but does that justifies Michael living him to rot in that condition? how comfortable will Michael feel if his father dies of a common infection like tetanus that could be treated with less than $200? what more humility are you asking for, that life has not already taking from him? even if your thinking is true, no one would have offered him money if Michael had done the right thing. Poverty is a disease and poverty makes people do stupid things |

harakiri: @Post
I normally don't reply to posts like these due to the sentimental nature but i just couldn't help myself.
YES, his father wasn't there for him, abandoned him at a tender age and YES, his father is an irresponsible bigot.Even with all these, you have to understand that people of the man's time married wives like these and still got remembered in their old age.I do agree that he Mike doesn't owe him anything but for humanity sake, he can do better.Did you see the foot of that man? That foot looks infected with tetanus.Living the man to die from a cheap illness wouldn't make Mike sleep better at night.I know what i'm talking about coz I HAVE BEEN THERE!
My parents had issues early in life and from the age of 5, i didn't know a father till i was in the university.Even when i came to him from school for needs and such, he would send me out of his house and refer me back to my mom.My university days were very rough but i came through. My dad died the same year i finished (2003).Even though i was angry with him at the time, i still wish i could see him again. If he were alive today and he beckoned on me for help, i would not forsake him. . .not because he deserves it but for humanity sake. There are people who were abandoned by their mothers at infancy, grew up in foster homes, hustled on the street, made it in life and STILL LOOK FOR THEIR PARENTS WHO ABANDONED THEM TO DIE! You don't know what you have till it's gone.Money isn't everything and revenge ain't always sweet served cold. After the cold taste comes an unending bitterness.
I don talk finish. Exactly my point. What has Michael got to lose by forgiving and helping his poor dad? |

^^ I am not making excuse for Michael's father neither am I buying the father's story totally. I think he should do much more for his mother who stood by him all through. But my point is, no blood of Michael deserves to live like that, especially his father. I dont know if am too merciful, i just feel his father deserves some mercies (however few) from him. Question: Could it be he was hurt because you neglected him as a child?
James Essien: Ha ha ha ha. I did not neglect Michael. When the mother and I broke up, he was about two years so all the children stayed with her but they always came to me during festivals and some holidays, it was after he got to France that I stopped hearing from him and had never had his number. I looked after him and I was the one who even sent him to Sewedro Secondary school after his JSS. On that day I even had an accident and this is a story many people in Sewedro still remember. From there he had a scholarship to St. Augustine. I must confess I was not sending him money when he was in school but it was not deliberate because I was not having money at the time… I did my best to look after him but as a revenue collector what could I have done. I took him to secondary school, when he had the Liberty opportunity I played a major role. You ask Alhaji Sly Tetteh. |

^^It is difficult to see a child who doesn't want to see you Question: But you know where to contact him when he is in Ghana.
James Essien: No I do not. There was this time I heard he was in Ghana and would be training at the stadium so I dressed in my best cloths and travelled all the way to Accra…After the training I went to the dressing room but when my son saw me, he bent his head as if he was lacing his boots and remained there for over 15 minutes so I went to him and raised his head. Michael asked me who brought me to the stadium and it came to me as a surprise and I told him I was playing football at the stadium before he was born….When he got ready to leave I followed him to his car and reminded him that I came to see him for a discussion but he insisted he was busy. I then asked for transportation back home but he did not give me and asked me to meet him at Novotel the next Monday. I managed to perch with friends in Accra and finally got to Novotel on Monday only to be told Michael Essien left the country Friday night soon after my meeting with him |

Police Service Commission reinstates Nuhu Ribadu The Police Service Commission has reinstated Nuhu Ribadu, the former boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to the Nigeria Police Force, with his rank of Assistant Inspector-General. The reinstatement takes effect from December 2008 when he was kicked out of the police by a panel chaired by the current IGP, Ogbonnaya Onovo. Saharareporters has not been able to speak to Mr. Ribadu, who is traveling in California, United States, but Mr. Femi Falana, his lawyer, confirmed the story and denied that Ribadu ever wrote an apology letter to the PSC.On the basis of these developments, it is expected that Mr. Ribadu, who had filed two lawsuits against the Police Service Commission and the Inspector-General, will withdraw those cases from court. Analysts say they expect Mr. Ribadu to formally resign from the Police Force. http://www.saharareporters.com/real-news/sr-headlines/6135-police-service-commission-reinstates-nuhu-ribadu.html |

When you notice that something is distracting your staff, you try try to shut that thing out if you can. For instance, I've once banned my staff from changing the TV channel to Africa Magic because it was a distraction.
Many companies have done it with facebook. Some staff spend the whole day on fb rather than work. I dont think its anything personal although it means lots of their staff visit Nairaland. I agree with you. This shouldn't be news. A lot of companies all over the world have IT policies that ensures their staff do not use official hours surfing away on the net. |

I agree the man did not do much for Essien while growing up
But I dont think he should neglect him especially when he can afford to make life better for him
Even relatives who never contributed a dime to our growing up do enjoy some mercies when we become successful.
He is still his father and he deserves some mercies. I felt sad seeing the condition/environment Essien's father lives in.
