Agumbaa: Huge indictment on Nigeria that such number of people are jobless, and it has not triggered a national emergency.
However you twist, IPOB has the superior narrative, if Nigeria was a serious country, the ones you terms as "jobless touts" will be gainfully employed.
You see it is a "Catch 22". Of course the unemployment and hopelessness is real, that's the reason why you have these agitations everywhere embraced by people at the ground level who are tired of being hopeless; they now have something they can hold onto in hope that it would better their lot. But would it? |

Obviously a sign that the people carrying this thing on their head are just jobless folks, students and shopless 'umu oso ahias' who believe a change of country name would automatically change their fortunes to riches and comfort. |

ReubenE: It is laughable that the apostles of this present government get fulfilment when the name Jonathan is mentioned.
At one point they say the NERDC is solely responsible for the curriculum as an independent body, even as far as saying the present government nor the educational minister is responsible for the change, which absolves the government of wrongdoing.
At another, they blame Jonathan because the review was done under his government. I thought they said nothing was removed, and that some people are just trying to be mischievous. What did Jonathan do wrong with this now?? The only reason GEJ's name is mentioned is because hardcore Jonathanians led by Reno Omokri started the needless and senseless name calling by mentioning Buhari as the initiator of the CRS removal issue when in actual fact, the policy was moulded during the time of his own boss Jonathan. |

k199192: If your comparison is between coal and Nigerian generators then I will rest my case. Coal power is not near clean. Trump opted to disengage from the paris deal doesn't make Obama, who signed the deal, mad. it's just two differnt people with two different views. Once again I will tell you that coal is an outdated source of energy generation, there is no such thing as modern coal plant. once coal is burnt it must generate hydrocarbons and those hydrocarbons are not ecofriendly. I understand the concept that we have to learn to run before we fly, but was the president not thinking like that before he signed the deal? And as for Trump, I am a Trump guy but I do not understand why he is against the deal, maybe he has stakes in the coal industry who knows. But believe me coal is bad. Even China agreed to the deal and they are the world's most users of caol. The crux of the matter is that Nigeria is in dire need of power and at this point, we shouldn't be selective. Even the more advanced countries we tend to mimic in the clean energy campaign are still all deeply involved in this same coal energy we talk about, as a matter of fact, coal as a source of global energy will still be very relevant even in the next 50 years; dont be deceived by the global rhetorics. Now back home, over 70% of Nigeria's power comes from gas fired plants. Militants blow up one major gas line and half of our power is shut out. It certainly isnt a wise thing for any country to just rely on one fuel source for its power. Diversification is the word, we need diverse power sources if we must be useful with ourselves and whilst renewables are still extremely expensive (we havent reached that level yet to rely on renewables), I definitely prefer coal to nuclear. |

k199192: You sound like you know what you are saying but your continuous repetition of coal is disturbing. You know coal is an outdated source of energy generation yeah? That's why they signed the Paris deal and our president signed that deal too. The most disturbing is that from the write up above I read that dangote is building a coal fired plant. This is really a zoo. Coal isnt really outdated as you think. A properly designed modern coal plant is still 1000 cleaner than the present 20 million generators which currently power Nigeria. We need to learn to walk before we start thinking of running or flying. Most of the powerful already industrialised economies of this world still use this same coal for up to half of their power generation. Just recently, Trump pulled the US out of the Paris agreement amidst much condemnation and that was probably because he knows coal power in the US isnt going anywhere soon (hence no need for the hypocrisy). In Nigeria, we really need to measure and grade ourself properly before talking about flying with the big boys. |
Politics › Re: Manufacturers Abandon Discos For Private Power Suppliers by obailala(m): 5:40pm On Jun 23, 2017 |
enigma2007: That could work... However, power needs to be fully deregulated and decentralized... There is a limit to the MW that an entity that is not the FG can generate..
Personally, i am looking forward to a day that residential houses can sell power to the govt or to the national grid. I think I read recently that the limit has now been scrapped... Hence why we are now seeing these suppliers like Tower Energy Solution and Negris group springing up in some locations. |

Blue3k: Haven't read about other states. UT I so know Akwa Ibom and G.E partnered to increase Ibom Power plant to a capacity of 685mw from 190mw. Yeah but that's a huge one which may take forever to complete. I was looking at smaller power plants; create a couple of small industial estates and drop 10-15mw power sources to take care of power needs. I feel that would be much more easily achievable in a short period. |

This is actually a very good development. Decentralise and deregulate power supply and watch how the owners of the dead DISCOs would sit up.
Some oil producing states like Delta, Rivers and Akwa-Ibom who all have easy access to gas, I wonder why these states aren't creating industrial clusters which can assure investors of steady and cheap power supply. |
Politics › Fashola Laments Lagos-Ibadan/2nd Niger bridge Budget Cuts by NASS by obailala(op): 12:23pm On Jun 23, 2017 |
We owe contractors N15bn, yet NASS reduced Lagos/Ibadan Expressway budget to N10bn – FasholaThe Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has raised alarm over the insertion of projects outside the purview of his ministry in the 2017 Appropriation Act by the National Assembly.
Fashola, a senior advocate, said it was unfair to the Executive arm for the inclusion of such projects after public hearings on the budget and defence of the fiscal estimates by the ministries.
“What I have in my budget now is primary healthcare centres, boreholes,’’ he said at an interactive session with editors on Thursday.
“That was the meeting we had with the Acting President and that was the reason why the budget was not signed on time.
“We were asked to complete those abandoned projects; the budget of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was reduced by the National Assembly from N31bn to N10bn.
“We are owing the contractors about N15bn and they have written to us that they are going to shut down.
“Also, the budget of the 2nd Niger bridge was reduced from N15bn to N10bn and about N3bn or so was removed from the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja road budget.’’
“Everybody is complaining about power supply but they also cut the budget for Manbila power project and the Bodo bridge that connects the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Station was also cut and all these were also discussed.
“If after we have defended the budget and we had gone and the legislature unilaterally changed the budget, what is the purpose of deliberation?’’
According to Fashola, it is unfair to Nigerians after public hearings were conducted with taxpayers’ money and consultations with the lawmakers only for the budget to be altered, cut or padded.
The minister said that apart from the 200 uncompleted roads he inherited from the previous administration, the lawmakers added 100 roads.
“These roads are not federal roads and some of them do not have designs, how do we award roads that were not designed irrespective of the power you have?
“It is unconstitutional for the National Assembly to legislate on state roads.
“A budget is an estimation plan that set in motion what is to be spent, how much will be borrowed and how much will be collected.
“The executive controls all the machinery for collecting taxes and other revenue with relevant data from the Ministries of Finance, Physical Planning and the Budget Office and others.
“I am not saying that the legislature cannot contribute to the budget, but I hold the view that it cannot increase the budget because they do not collect the revenue with which to run or implement the budget,’’ he said.
Fashola, who held sway as Lagos State Governor between 2007 and 2015, canvassed interdependence and collaboration among the three arms of government rather than independence to ensure a harmonious relationship.
The minister said that without it, the country would not make progress and would be bogged down by the politics of total separation of power and what he called “power of example rather than example of power.’’
“The society benefits more from the power of example and interdependence rather than the example (show) of power; it requires that we show good examples.’’
On the concept of interdependence, Fashola said the President and the Vice-President could not swear themselves into office, but are sworn in by the judicial arm, while the president also proclaims the National Assembly without which it could not start business.
In the same vein, he said the National Assembly confirms ministerial nominees and justices of the courts who are in turn sworn-in by the executive.
He urged the intervention of the judicial arm of government to set the necessary parameters and set things right.
Fashola, however, blamed the electorate for putting pressure on the lawmakers and expecting them to do what was outside their constitutional duties of law-making, representation and oversight.
“There is need for mass orientation and enlightenment for Nigerians not to expect their elected representatives to provide roads, water, light and execute capital projects which is the function of the executive arm.’’
(NAN) http://punchng.com/we-owe-contractors-n15bn-yet-nass-reduced-lagosibadan-expressway-budget-to-n10bn-fashola/While Nigerians are still struggling to tolerate the executive rogues, the bigger rogues in the NASS keep hindering every little good the executive rogues even manage to offer.
