heykims: It is because of the negative mindsets of Nigerians that always breeds conspiracy theories. Now polio that was initially declared eradicated in Nigeria has been resurfaced in the north thanks to people like the op and ignorant parents. If I were in authority, I wouldnt hesitate to order closing down ur school. Nigeria is probably the only country in the world now that has cases of wild polio if truly it was confirmed in the North. What's all these nonsense going on in this tbread with people supporting the barbaric behaviour of the so called health worker? What did the OP or school owner do or say wrong by insisting that parental consent be sought first? So because Nigeria has cases of wild polio, then that means any stranger that walks into a school compound claiming to be a health worker should be permitted to forcefully inject people's kids with 'God knows what' without the consent of parents? Try and inject my child without my consent first! I'll make sure you the health worker, the school owner and even the teachers in that school would languish in prison; and yeah of course, I'll make sure I burn down or close down the school myself. Nonsense! |

IGBOSON1: You have to be Igbo...and one with a sense of history, to be able to appreciate the level of Igbophobia, Igbo-hate and anti-Igbo policies that have been commonplace (especially amongst the Fulani, some Yoruba and some Ijaw) in Nigeria from the 50s to date! These negative sentiments towards Igbos’ have manifested in many ways: from Aguiyi Ironsi being the last Head of State of Igbo extraction since the late 60s to date; to areas of Igboland blessed with the highest concentration of hydrocarbons being removed with surgical precision and placed in Rivers State for Ijaws and Igbo-deniers to guard for the ruling hegemony and their southern 2nd in command; to little or no nation building institutions being located in Igboland, while just two towns in the core north (Kaduna and Zaria) have more than the entire south-east states combined; to the south-east playing 2nd class to the south-west and north-west in the provision of federally-enabled infrastructure like railways, dams, refineries, int’l airports and int’l airport terminals; to Nigeria handing over its premier and major commercial and industrial centre (Lagos) to just one ethnicity to administer; to no Igbo having been FCT minister since its creation (presently, the minister and minister of state of the FCT are both from the core north...probably both Fulani); to no Igbo being Chief of Army Staff since the late 60s, until the coming of GEJ; to no seaport in the south-east since this country got ‘independence’ even though it’s easier to accomplish than building the Suez and Panama canals; to less attention and investment given to the seaports in the eastern part of the country while Lagos got more than its fair share; to Buhari treating Igbos (a supposed 3rd leg of the tripod on which Nigeria stands) like shit; jeez....i could go on and on, but i trust you’ve got the picture!
Only a insensitive, Igbo-hating bigot would say Igbos have no justification for thinking UNN was denied a Chemical Department because of the civil war....esp’ after seeing the level of hate, envy and wickedness we’re up against in Nigeria! I am an igbo person myself and I grew up soaked in all these theories too. But I grew up and chose to free myself from that mental slavery a long time ago. Yes there's a level of Igbophobia across the nation for different reasons; but likewise there's also a more than proportionate victimhood mentality paranoia which breeds bizarre theories like this very one about UNN and chemical engineering. There're several federal and even state universities and polytechnics across the SE which offer chemical engineering as a course. But somehow, you and your friend Vita want me to believe UNN doesnt offer chemical engineering because Fulanis and some Yorubas conspired against Igbos cos they dont want Igbos to learn how to make bombs, so therefore they ensured UNN doesnt have Chem Eng till date? Like seriously, these sort of theories are nauseating and its just embarrassing. |

The problems stifling businesses are not restricted to any tribe or ethnicity - Poor power supply, dilapidated transportation infrastructure, insecurity, frustrating government bureaucracies/inefficiencies fuelled primarily by corruption etc. These things militate against the smooth running of businesses across Nigeria as a whole and they affect just about everyone. Why do you (and several others) always keep isolating it as an 'Igbo issue' as though there are only Igbos in the Nigerian business sphere? This is a pure example of the self-centred attitude that makes other Nigerians resent Igbos. |

wirinet: We are not talking of aesthetics, we are talking about standards and quality. Nigerian bridges and roads are of a lower standard than other developed countries. I had a relation who worked for a UN agency that carried out a survey of Nigerian roads. He told me that all Nigerian fell short of international standards, including the ones build by Julius Berger. He said the concrete strength and thickness of the roads always comes short of the actual design and traffic specifications. My main concern is actually the refereence to the Chinese built structures. Several people just have this opinion that the Chinese projects in Nigeria are substandard compared to the JB handled projects. I'm just curious to know the basis for this conclusion. Are there any tangible examples to prove this? Or is this just a result of a long standing but redundant stereotype (i.e. Chinese = poor quality)? |
Travel › Re: Look At The Bridge Chinese Constructed In China And The Type They Built For Us. by obailala(m): 12:10pm On Jan 26, 2022 |
wirinet: The problem is not the Chinese, it's the Nigerians who contract the Chinese. The Chinese has a policy of giving you the standard you are willing to pay. When you order ordinary consumer items from China, they will give you various prices of various quality of the same product. Physically you would not be able to tell the difference between different standards. Even with drugs you will be asked to specify how much active ingredients you want in the drugs depending on the price you are ready to pay. That's the Chinese model of business. First of all, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the bridge posted by the OP, both quality wise and even aesthetically. Of course it isnt as big as the other one he tried to compare it with; both bridges are different and serve different purposes, so the comparison in itself is pointless. Then this recurring talk in this thread about Chinese building substandard projects, please can anyone in here kindly point out examples of the substandard construction projects the Chinese have executed in Nigeria? |

Who do we blame here? Maybe our leaders because it's the amount of money they award some of these projects and they will still embezzle part of it. What is wrong with that Nigerian bridge?... I'm totally lost here... In terms or quality, there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with that Nigerian bridge. Even in terms of aesthetics, there's absolutely nothing wrong with the bridge itself; maybe you might make a case for the dilapidated dwellings surrounding the flyover but what exactly is wrong with the bridge itself? How exactly do ypu compare apples and bananas?... The 2 bridges are very different, and meant to serve different purposes. And lastly, was that Nigerian bridge actually even built by the Chinese? What bridge is that? |

dasparrow: I remember way back when Julius Berger, a german construction company used to build all our roads and bridges. They did an excellent job. But now, our leaders bring in these chinese to come and do our construction and you see the result. If I were president of Nigeria, I will not give one single contract to the chinese. They can't be trusted. Where exactly is this even coming from?... Which bad or substandard projects have the chinese built for us so far?... Several people on this thread have been saying this same thing, probably just based on a redundant stereotype assumption of 'Chinese = poor quality'. Firstly, from the pictures, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that Nigerian bridge both quality wise and in aesthetics. Shanty-like dwellings around a bridge doesnt mean a bridge is poor quality. Meanwhile the flyover the OP posted, was it really even built by the chinese? What's the name of the bridge? |

Bluntdude: Hello guys, good day. Kindly help me make the right decision.
I am an artisan in Abuja who works under a reputable company as a freelancer. My job entails me moving around much everytime. I've done this for years now and to be honest it's really affecting me. The stress of trekking, getting into vehicles and alighting incessantly is really wearing me out. I'm thinking of saving 3k per day for about 2 years to get a car to help ease my movement because in the past and even now, I've lost some customers due to my inability to meet up with some appointments. Most times I get home really exhausted not necessarily because of much work but because of the stress involved in getting to customers' houses and returning again daily.
Now here's the challenge... I planned on getting a land and start building soon before the idea of getting a car came up due to much stress of moving about. I'd really love to own my own house. So please I'd be needing advice from you guys... House or car? Which should I start with first? Really important. Thanks. At 3k savings per day, it would probably take you 10-15 years to build a miniature house. So if you chose to build the house first, you would probably die from the weariness of excessive trekking before you even get to the roofing stage. Consider your health bro... Besides, after getting a decent car, it could boost your business immensely and in addition to preserving your health, you'd earn more and save more to be able to build your house. |

lexy2014: How did u arrive at your 50-60% figure with regards Nigeria's forex? Even if it is so, how will that result in "massive never been seen kr heard effect on Nigeria's economy that it will have on the economy"? My bad, I may have overestimated; 40% was the actual figure quoted (see link below). https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2021/10/15/emefiele-nigeria-spends-40-of-fx-on-importation-of-petrol-others/Next point to note is that the refinery will produce more than our current national consumption so that means additional forex inflow into Nigeria from the excess petroleum products export (remember you make far far far much more money exporting refined products than exporting crude). Verdict = More Fx inflow! Also note that in addition to the primary petroleum liquids, for raw materials such as plastics (polyethylene and polypropylene) of which we currently import, there would be a turnaround as we would go from net importers to net exporters overnight. Verdict = More forex inflow! If you take a look at what's been going on with the economy, you'd agree that the biggest problem we've had in the last few years has been the forex scarcity and its effect on the exchange rate (i.e. Naira devaluation), which in turn has driven inflation through the roof. Fix the forex scarcity issue, you'd fix the Naira devaluation problem and when you fix that, you put a halt in inflation. Yes it wouldn't be back to N150/$ but there would be notable improvement from the current N570/$. So yeah, I termed it a "massive never been seen or heard effect on Nigeria's economy" because this will be the first time a single project endeavour can change the countries fortunes almost overnight. Just watch out, I wouldn't be surprised if saboteurs in high places start trying to sabotage the project cos for everything you see which is wrong with NIgeria, there are principalities in high places who benefit. |

Johnrake69: What's the cost of labour and other factors in those countries you're making the comparison with?
Fuel is priced 40 cent per litre in Saudi Arabia. And can you compare the minimum wage?
The problem with Nigeria is that even the enlightened folks are quick to jump into comparison of international standards without deep understanding of the peculiarities of the Nigerian situation because they are well off.
Forgetting that it's in the interest of every one for us to have a stable economy where an average Nigerian can survive doing any job they find.
Let's keep supporting international standards until the poor will have nothing else to eat than to eat us all. It's already happening with Kidnapping and organ harvesting. No one, not a single person on this thread, has claimed that it is not good for prices of petroleum products to be down. No one has "forgotten that it's in the interest of every one for us to have a stable economy where an average Nigerian can survive doing any job they find". But the point being passed across to you is that , for those prices to be down, subsidies have to be paid (regardless of whether we refine locally or not)... and yeah, the Saudi Arabia you talked about pays subsidies to keep their prices down. So just to make it clear, instead of arguing that petrol price should ideally be <N165 if we refine locally (no economic logic to this), your argument should rather be that "Govt should ensure they keep the price down even if it means by paying subsidies". |

dominique: Other than the employment opportunities it brings, there's nothing to be thrilled about this refinery. When cement was still being imported, the price was still manageable. In comes Dangote cement with locally sourced materials, prices of cement has since quadrupled if not more. I'm sure that's how it's going to be when this Dangote refinery becomes operational. That N300/L we don't want to spend on fuel at the moment, we might end up spending more than that as I'm sure government won't spend one Kobo to subsidize his fuel. Dangote enters a market and the prices of the commodity automatically inflates. His fuel won't be an exception I beg to differ on your opening sentence. If the refinery starts production and Nigeria stops importing petroleum products, it would have a massive never been seen or heard effect on Nigeria's economy. |
