Politics › Re: Are You Willing To Pay N178,000 Monthly For A 24-hour Electricity Supply? by Oghene86: 6:39am On Apr 04, 2024 |
socialmediaman: More context and data (using N1,300 = $1 conversion rate):
Electricity cost per KWH for band A in Nigeria = 17 cents. The minimum wage in Nigeria is N30,000 monthly.
Electricity cost per KWH in North Dakota (US) = 10 cents. Minimum wage in North Dakota is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).
Electricity cost per KWH in Texas (US) = 15 cents. Minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).
Note: Many Nigerians living in major cities (rich or poor) in Nigeria fall within the band A category, including residents and businesses. It's utterly disheartening how policies like these are enforced, especially when drawing parallels with the USA. Instead of tackling the glaring issue of minimum wage, why not raise it to $20 per hour before drawing such comparisons? It seems we always opt for impoverishing policies first, only to seek solutions later. The removal of subsidies without functional refineries and now proposing an increase in electricity tariffs while workers struggle on a meager salary of N35k, compared to power bills of over N170k in the USA, is baffling. Tinubu appears to be solely focused on boosting revenue for personal gain, turning a blind eye to the rampant government corruption, as seen with the Betta Edu case. Until accountability is upheld, such comparisons hold little weight. |

Christianity Etc › Re: Your Easter Message Provocative, CAN Demands Apology From FIRS by Oghene86: 6:43am On Apr 03, 2024 |
Ofunaofu: The Christian Association of Nigeria has demanded a public apology from the Federal Inland Revenue Service over an Easter advert which the Christian body said it deemed offensive.
The FIRS, in an X (formerly Twitter) post, #FIRSNigeria, had shared a picture of a Point of Sale machine with the caption, “Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes.”
The post had elicited reactions from Nigerians, particularly Christians, who condemned the post.
Although the post has been taken down, CAN’s National Director of National Issues and Social Welfare, Abimbola Ayuba, in a statement on Tuesday, called on President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Department of State Services to take cognisance of the incident and guide the FIRS in adhering to only messages that promote unity and peace.
The statement read in part, “In the light of recent events, we call upon the management of the FIRS to retract the message and offer a public apology for the distress caused.
“We also urge the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Department of State Services to take cognisance of this incident and to guide the FIRS in adhering to communication strategies that promote respect, unity, and cohesion.
“As a nation that prides itself on religious harmony and peaceful coexistence, we are deeply concerned by the recurrence of provocative messages around religious holidays. This year, a public institution, which should be the bastion of exemplary conduct, has been implicated in disseminating content that is widely regarded as offensive and derogatory to the Christian faith.
“The Easter period, a time of solemn reflection and sacred observance for Christians, should not be juxtaposed with civic obligations in a manner that trivialises or mocks core religious beliefs. Religious convictions are at the heart of our identity and deserve the utmost respect.
“The analogy drawn by the FIRS between the pivotal Christian doctrine of redemption, and the civic duty of tax payment has been received with distress and indignation by the Christian community.”
The association advised all public and private organisations to exercise caution and consideration for the diverse religious backgrounds of the society.
It said communications, especially from public institutions, should be crafted with a clear understanding of the cultural and religious tapestry that defines the nation.

Omoapena: 1m litres, sounds like something that won't be enough for Lagos state alone...
Heard, this trucks uses 1k litre to move from Lagos to north and imagine 100trucks at a go to the north, that's 100,000 litre being consumed by trucks going to north alone. Now talk about other users, 1m sounds small to me tho. You don't understand, what they're saying is that the minimum they would sell to marketers would be a million liters, not to states, most small markets can only afford 33,000 liters or double |

Politics › Re: Outrage As Akpabio Hosts Iftar On Easter Monday by Oghene86: 6:18am On Apr 02, 2024 |
Naijadaily: President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio incurred the anger of the Christian Association of Nigerian , CAN and some of his colleagues for hosting Muslim Ramadan Iftar on the same day as the Christians are celebrating Easter Monday to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Faulting Akpabio’s event, a member of CAN James Ahmed described the Senate President’s move as irresponsible, hypocritical and ill timed saying that it disrespectful to both religions.
Speaking angrily via telephone chat from Lafia , James said that hosting an Islamic event on the same day in which Christians were celebrating their own showed how irresponsible Akpabio is.
Contrastingly, the clergy also lampooned Akpabio stressing that the event was also inconvenient to the Muslim Lawmakers as most of them had traveled out of the country to observe the 2024 Ramadan Umrah in Saudi Arabia.
The Senate President had sent out invites to the 109 Senators to attend the Iftar fast-breaking evening meal of Muslims at his Maitama official guest House in Abuja.
Faulting Akpabio further James stated that such a function ought to have been held within 3 days of the commencement of the Ramadan fast, adding that it is useless to host such an event when the Muslims have less than 10 days to conclude their fasting.
Journalists who were invited to cover the Iftar ceremony disclosed that Iftar was poorly attended with about 14 Senators in attendance out of the 109 Lawmakers.
James carpeted Akpabio;
“It is very irresponsible for Akpabio to call for Ramadan fast break during Easter Monday, he could have done it 3 days to the beginning of Ramadan fast. It makes no sense to hold such an event on the day that Christian are celebrating Easter Monday".
“Those that advised him to host Iftar today are ignorant , it's an insult to the Christians and Muslims. The Senators that went are not up to 14, that attended, it's the wrong timing. Many Muslim Senators are not around and many have traveled for Umrah while others are engaged.
Though reasons behind the poor attendance could not be ascertained, findings revealed that some Lawmakers asked to be excused from the function.
Similarly, Lawmakers who attended complained that the event wasn't necessary, asking not be named a North Central Senator said that Akpabio had sinister motives as the ceremony was disrespectful to both religions.
The latest criticism of Akpabio comes amid the lingering crisis in the Senate between loyalists of the President of the Red Chamber, Godswill Akpabio and Northern lawmakers shifted to governors and other political leaders from the North.
The crisis which led to the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central Senatorial District, started weeks before the emergence of Akpabio as President of the 10th Senate in 2023
According to reports Almost three weeks after the suspension of Ningi for granting an interview with the BBC Hausa Service where he made some startling revelations.
He had claimed that Tinubu was operating two national budgets, one approved by the National Assembly, and the other unknown to the Parliament.
It was gathered that ranking senators from the North and some governors, have now stepped in to mediate and resolve the lingering crisis in the upper legislative chamber.
A senator from the North West who is one the key facilitators of the peace move, told reporters in confidence that the issues would have been resolved without suspending Ningi if the three lawmakers from South West, Bamidele, Olamilekan and Ibrahim had not mounted pressure on Akpabio to act.
The lawmaker said some governors who were worried about the ethnic dimensions of the crisis, reached out to Akpabio to apply caution and recall Ningi, who they said has the backing of leading politicians from the North.

Politics › Re: Pro-wike Lawmakers Illegitimate, Can’t Impeach Fubara – Rivers Elders by Oghene86: 6:39am On Apr 01, 2024 |
HenryThegreat1: The Rivers State Elders’ Council has rubbished the renewed threat of impeachment against Governor Siminalayi Fubara by members of the state House of Assembly loyal to ex-governor Nyesom Wike.
The council said the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers lacked the legitimacy to take any action because, according to the council, they had lost their seats by defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
The 27 pro-Wike lawmakers had, on Saturday, threatened to revisit the impeachment proceedings against Fubara as a last resort to uphold the nation’s constitution.
Fubara had last October survived an impeachment plot by the lawmakers amid his feud with Wike, his estranged political godfather.
The lawmakers dropped the impeachment threat following an intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
The renewed impeachment threat came in the wake of a press briefing in Port Harcourt last week by a former PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, and members of the PDP Rivers State Presidential Campaign Council, where they declared support for Fubara and heavily knocked Wike, warning Tinubu to be wary of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The Assembly Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, who read the text of a media briefing, accused Fubara of consistently acting outside the law despite being a signatory to the Abuja peace resolution superintended by Tinubu.
Amaewhule fumed that Fubara had shunned the part of the eight-point resolution that he should present the 2024 budget afresh to the 27 lawmakers.
The Speaker warned that the governor was treading on the brink of impeachment.
Related News Pro-Wike lawmakers threaten Fubara with impeachment Rivers assembly threatens Fubara with impeachment Secondus, PDP campaign council back Fubara, warn Tinubu against Wike
However, reacting to the threat in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday, a member of the Rivers Elders’ Council and pioneer spokesman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, High Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, described the impeachment threat as mere ranting.
Sara-Igbe noted that the lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of the pro-Wike lawmakers was pending before the Court of Appeal.
He stated, “Well we are appearing before the Court of Appeal on April 8, 2024. When we appear, then we will know where they are. They are only ranting because they are an illegitimate House of Assembly.
“The governor himself does not have the power to legitimise them. For the sake of peace, he just gave them little recognition and they are now ranting and doing what they like.
“It is quite unfortunate. If you tell the governor the implication of these things he does not believe that these people that you think are making peace don’t mean well. But as I said, we are in court; so, let them continue to rant. We will see where it will end and the proud will be humiliated within a short while.
“Let them do whatever they like but I can assure you everything they are doing is illegal.”
On the call for Fubara to present the 2024 budget afresh, Sara-Igbe, “As far as we are concerned, all the eight-point agenda that was signed are illegal. And that is why we are in court to contest it. So, when a matter is before a court, it means the status quo remains.
“So, if they refuse to do that, then the court will take its own stand. You don’t take the laws into your own hands when you are in court. The governor cannot present any budget when we are in court.
“So, if they feel that they are more than the court, then the court should take a decision on it. But so far as we are concerned, we need the legal implication whether or not they are legitimate members of the House of Assembly.
https://punchng.com/pro-wike-lawmakers-illegitimate-cant-impeach-fubara-rivers-elders/ You guys should push for the case to be heard in Court, your saying it means nothing without a court judgement, take it up with the courts to determine if they hold that seat, keep them busy, get a judgement from the Rivers State high Court declaring their seat vacant, they will all start fight for their lives |
