It's only commonsense to allow IDPS vote for presidential election alone.
If they currently reside outside their state due to displacement, their votes will influence who becomes governor in a state they don't normally reside in or have a stake in.

The rail line has been completed and already in use. It was started over 30yrs ago to link Ajaokuta steel plant to Itakpe and Warri sea port for steel export.
This govt has decided to use it both for the original purpose and for passenger services in addition. So they are building the train stations now.
After which another construction will commence from Ajaokuta to link passenger service to Abuja.

The thing is...the whole education sector needs trillions of naira(my estimate)...not just unviersites ....if we want to enjoy free and QUALITY education at low prices/fees.

No need to increase fees. We maintain the status quo in university education just as in every other sector in Nigeria. Or govt can increase funding a bit in subsequent budgets in education and health and reduce that of other social infrastructure. (Hopefully, ASUU members don't die on bad roads)

Do you think if there was no massive looting of monies meant for education both in the military era and since 1999, that ASUU will be making isolated demands for funding?

The goal is we strive for good governance to ensure that all appropriated funds are utilised to develop all sectors of the country, including universities.
This means not voting for any persons that are more disposed to corruption and looting of public funds. And holding public officers accountable for the resources at their disposals.

It was reasonable..the problem was, there was no way Government was going to be able to fund it. (That is what GEJ and the then labour minister eventually told them in 2013).Even now (our budget is N9 trillion for next year, and proposing we spend N3 trillion on just universites ....naa).

The problem is...this means raised fees. (which is something neither ASUU, nor government , nor the Nigerian people want.)

At the end of the day, ASUU would take a beaten down agreement, and the funding problem remains.

The sad thing...it is the poor who would suffer the effects. Rich and the middle class would just port to private universites....or go abroad.(and even some of the poor would do the same).

I'm sure if you read all your paragraphs again, especially the first two, you'll see your contradiction and the answers to my statement that... the whole ASUU strike thing is unreasonable, unrealistic and a needless waste of time for the affected poor students.

If all parties understand and agree that there is no headway regarding the demands, then why go on strike? To show power?

1.The 14 new universites have made funding much more difficult. There are more universites for limited places.(By the way, Bubu too has set up at least 5 new universites. I guess that also makes him a good leader. Fact is, we don't need new universites. ).

2.Go and read the 2009 agreement which stated that universites should get N3 trillion in extra funding over 2 years. GEJ reduced it to 1.5 trillion over 5 years and was only able to pay N200billion in 2014.

3.TETFUND has been around before the GEJ admin.

4.The problem, and the reason why GEJ could not pay the whole money is simple. Fees have to go up. But neother the PDP or the APC or Nigerians are ready to face that reality.

Imagine how unreasonable and unrealistic ASUU's demands are. The 2009 budget was about N3trillion and ASUU alone was demanding a whole of Nigeria's budget in 2yrs for them alone. Crazy fellas
Maybe NMA, NUT, NURTW, NRC, NTA, etc. should have all demanded for their own trillions and subsequently embarked on their own strike actions so that the entire country paralyses. And then ASUU members can go to Sango for health treatments.

ASUU's effrontery and needless annual strike actions is simply an evidence that power intoxicates and absolute power corrupts (a black man especially)

1. Do you know that there is a strong link between the quality of education (especially science and tech; especially tertiary education) and national development?
2. All sectors are important, but the blunt truth is, a sensible society know they are not equally important. If you have to sort all the sectors you listed above in order of importance to national development, how would you do it? Hint: examples abound globally.
3. Do you think the universities, in their current state, can contribute meaningfully to national development?
4. Do you agree that the universities need to be better funded?

Now, the big question;

5. Where should this funding come from.

By the time you work through the above exercise, I think you will realize that the only responsible course for ASUU is to fight for improved funding. Whether it is the government they should be fighting or the parents/students though, that is a totally different discussion.

Your response only reechoed the arrogance typical of ASUU members. You only succeeded in emphasising the importance of university education which is known the world over.

To show you the arrogance of ASUU, educational institutions at the primary and secondary levels don't embark on strike actions, unlike ASUU that has equated itself to a demigod body in Nigeria.

As if funding will 100% guarantee quality in the same Nigeria where some VCs have been charged for looting of public funds meant for improving university education.

You guys simply wanted to cash in on NLC planned strike then and the upcoming elections to arm-twist the govt.

I was a victim of your needless strike actions for 5yrs turned almost 6yrs at the University. I stand with government on this.
Go back to work or go look for another "perfectly funded sector" to work with.

Sometimes I blame ASUU when I read posts like this. One solution to this problem has always been to jerk up school fees. Someone has to fund the system, and if you folks don't want us to make government do it, then go ahead and pick up the slack.

Funny how you guys don't realize that government has already gotten away with murder at the secondary level. Today, public secondary schools are increasingly an option for only the poor. If you want qualitative secondary education for your kids, you know what to do. No strike, no tantrums, no name-calling or demonizing. If you're poor, you take your kids to podunk college, where their odds of ever seeing the 4 walls of a federal university become almost zero.

Someone wants to destroy public universities in a similar way. It's either government, or fools who don't realize what's at stake, or parents who don't want to pay for top education. ASUU won't let that happen (and you lot better hope ASUU doesn't just throw in the towel in disgust).

The irony is this: whatever happens, the lecturers are the ones who will suffer the least.

And, lest I forget, yeah, we're ready for no-work-no-pay. Bring it on.

I went to a Federal government secondary school, FGCL to be precise. And the standard of education was and is still very good with quality teachers and OK infrastructure.
Public secondary education is largely run by the states and that's where the mess is compared to private schools.

If govt jacks up the fees and makes it unaffordable to the public just to improve quality, then what differentiates govt from private schools?

My problem with ASUU is...
Are Universities the only institutions that require funding in Nigeria?
Why are you guys always in a hurry to embark on strike actions? Always comparing yourselves with National Assembly members and their salaries.
We know they earn crazy wages. But if all institutions including health, transport went on strike for similar reasons, how will you survive?

If we fund universities the way ASUU wants it, what happens to health, roads, rails, power, housings, ports, etc.? So Nigerians including the lecturers should die on bad roads?
Nigeria is a developing country so ASUU must be reasonable and less arrogant in making funding demands.
Let's all focus on good governance and electing less corrupt people into office, as this is the only way to gradually build all sectors of the country.

Somehow I blame Fashola but I also pity his situation.
The discos have a ten year licence with additional 5yr renewal clause.
Fashola has to choose between respecting agreements between past govt and the new power companies or cancelling the licence.
He's chosen to work with the discos where they have challenges instead of telling the world that Nigerian govt doesn't respect agreements. But there's only so much that he can do as these companies are now privately owned.

No mystery here. Your discos are not ready to do business yet courtesy of the 2012 paddy-paddy privatisation.
Instead of selling the discos to serious people, they sold them to their political cronies like Abdusalam and Tunde Ayeni (Ibadan and Yola discos) Emeka Offor (Enugu disco). Same Ayeni that donated N2billion to Jonathan's campaign in 2015.
While the gencos and TCN have stepped up their capacities, your discos are not able to distribute the power produced due to lack of capacity. They are supposed to invest money and improve their capacities. Instead they lazily dish out estimated bills to get easy money.
That's what we call Political Privatisation of Nigeria's power sector. Same thing to expect if they "sell" NNPC.

Maintenance is a big problem in Nigeria and this is easily traced to lack of continuity, especially when there is a change in govt. Rivers state is a clear example. All the nice, beautiful schools, health centres that Amaechi built in Rivers state now look like dungeons after power changed hands. In addition, the rivers monorail was abandoned by Wike after billions had gone into its construction.

Nigerians should be wary of changing govts anyhow as most of our politicians are filled with political vendetta, coming in to cancel or abandon what their political rivals started. They first need to learn how not to mix politics with development.

Regarding the rail and its facilities, the Chinese I believe will run and maintain it for a year just like the Abuja rail while training Nigerians to hand over to. Hopefully we get this right.

This was my comment on a previous thread regarding political economy....

High oil price is what gives the naira value as most of our foreign earnings come from oil and gas sales.

So when oil price crashes and there is little or no foreign reserves, investors naturally run away because they risk not being able to repatriate their money out of the country.

Nigeria needs to gradually diversify its economy away from oil and reduce its imports especially on items that consume our foreign reserve the most like petroleum products, rice, wheat and steel.

In summary, produce these items locally and possibly export them (after which we can then float the naira), so that the strength of the naira can rely on other things apart from oil.

Build infrastructure and long-term investors will come in and set up industries in Nigeria. We have a huge market already.

Only one red flag is enough for me.

Regarding the video, I watched it then and always knew Obama wanted a less corrupt president to emerge. And I already was going to vote out GEJ before watching it.
The US has always believed that once Nigeria gets it right, a large population of Africans will benefit and then the rest of Africa will get it right also.
The US isn't happy to be giving aids and donations to a rich country like Nigeria because of massive looting of their treasury by the leaders.
