Hmm I'm conflicted. We didn't have parties, we mostly got shares and stocks bought in our names. I wanted to do the same and add cake, thanksgiving at church and a photoshoot but people are pressuring me, saying "this is your firstborn o!" I've been to a few birthday parties and truly the babies are overwhelmed and it ends up as a party for adults and shrieky kids running around (baby E gets quiet when she's around unknown faces that she sees regularly, talkless of strangers). And the economy has crashed, so it seems wasteful. But it feels like I'm denying my child of something, so I get it if parents want to throw that party. It's their money, Let them spend it as they seem. And for goodness' sake is there no DJ that can play more appropriate music than Davido and all that grinding bum-shaking cacophony?? Does appropriate Naija music which is not church music exist? |
since1914:Thanks for this. I'm baffled to see cornices in them. And I'm no architect but an Art lover so I've studied a bit on buildings and design. I already have an architect in mind for when I'm ready to build. At least I'll get what I want. I'd to encourage landscape designers as well to step up their game. Lagos is changing and there is a need for them. Some few people are in it quietly making money because their clients are the elite and upcomers wanting to take their place in society. |
Morewealth121:You know what, never mind. I just re-read your comment ans you boldly stated that Nigerians don't know good interior design. Well, there's no point continuing the conversation. Take care, all the best. |
Willow08 Some of us don't really like Modern Contemporary (though I love the use of light). For me, I would pay an interior designer well to give me an African Colonial house, complete wih a blend of African and English furnishings, natural materials mostly and of course glass. I want my home to be out of the ordinary and i would prefer natural grass than artificial. I wish I could post a pic of my sister's lawn as it's so nice (Lekki). Also I rarely see Landscape architects here. And there are some stunning houses in Lagos, but you haven't been inside to appreciate them. ![]() |
Morewealth121:Don't take this the wrong way, but that paint job you posted is horrendous. Clashing colours and the pattern is too busy. It looks like you were replicating a cheap copy of a fashion designer's main pattern and colour. Please try and study Paint and Colour under a visual artist. Please |
Ishilove:Of course they should. The child was hurt more from the fall and the rough play than actual attempt to kill from the gorilla. Plus witnesses are saying that the boy kept saying he wanted to go into the cage with the gorilla. His parents should have held him tighter. I have a relative like this, with a son like this (who doesn't hear word) and she will be there, bleating helplessly, whilst the boy misbehaves. When he went to stay with my sister, the first time he stepped out of line was the last time that period. As soon as he got back to his mum, he pulled a crazy stunt and got lost on a bridge and almost fell overboard. If you've been to the Cincinnati Zoo, you will know whoever was minding the child that day ought to be slapped for this. That is why there is a leash for children, some kids have to be harnessed. |
cococandy:New Mummy Syndrome is when you walk into the store and immediately go to the Children's section or start looking for something to buy for your child to make baby happy or life for baby easier. You tend to forget you were an actual person before that baby and never spend on yourself. |
Farmerforlife:Unfortunately, westerners are having Africa Fatigue: I'm their minds, there is always some mindless war or starvation and famine. And it has been made clear to them (with the help of our "leaders" that it is all our fault because we cause more than half our problems. So they0l are tired of us constantly wailing because there is always gonna be something wrong with Africa. But that chicken, the chicken is an innocent victim ![]() Efemena, my brother believes in Natural Selection. Very ruthless. His own philosphy in life is "Why should you survive if you're stvpid?" so it's hard to trust him with children who act silly because they're kids. And all the kids that know him tend to like him, especially teens. |
cococandy:I guess they wanted tranquilisers instead and there are many American parents who are very indulgent. I have a brother who would have shot the child, not the gorilla his reason would be that "it's going to be ugly watching the child being mauled". We don't let him babysit Baby E infact we are not sure we want him to reproduce ![]() |
I've met someone's Stepmum who it took me over a year to realise she wasn't their biological mum. She was loving and strict. But it wasn't easy because one of the kids still didn't like her and always favoured his mum over her. The rest of the kids and her, very loving. |
cococandy:Harambe was peaceful and such a nice fellow. I'm pissed. Why couldn't the parents hold their pikin ehhhh My mother would have calmly rubbed my head the soil the first time i go out with her so i realise to never leave her side during outings (only one sibling has gotten lost and was seen dancing in the middle of the festival whilst mummy gasped shock that he had run out to join them) ![]() |
obowunmi:Most people didn't and don't realise that their family life was dysfunctional. Especially around these parts. What you have to do is look for the signs that beyond their human frailties, they loved you. But they were human and made all sorts of mistakes. Once you can hold onto that, it gets easier. But you won't let go immediately all at once: in your future relaionships you will still find yourself reacting to something your parents did, with your SO. Explain to her "it's not your fault, I was just exposed to this so whenever I see something like it, I react, justly or unjustly". With time, you will develop a stronger bond with your SO and things will get easier. And that time is marriage. Because you can't be fully prepared and have all the right conversations before "I do", what you can do is make the best choice on the info before you and grow with that person. Or you can be like our local champions here, whom all apparently discussed every single issue before marriage and were 100% prepared before the ring showed up. So there were no issues. They're perfect human beings ![]() |
cococandy:We are beginning to have places like this in Nigeria. But they are pricey as well (Garden boutiques). Check out Aralia by Nature and there's another in Abuja. |
cococandy:Most likely they are hand-made, fired claypot by a sculptor. Which are cheaper in Nigeria. See, something good about Naija ![]() Your comment is making remember I missed buying a Marc Jacobs bag last year because New Mummy Syndrome was stacking me |
Here is a picture showing some good low light plants you can use in a terrarium. Most can be round in Lagos.

Confront him. Calmly. Tell him what you saw. Show him. Yes he may lie and hide it better next time but let him know that you won't sit down and accept such. Because when you give someone an inch, they will take a mile. That's human nature, to always push boundaries. Either confront him or confront the girls (if you have energy and time) by posting their chats and numbers onto facebook and tagging their families. I don't know if it's the best option but a lot of people are doing it now and it is sending girls who like to play with married man into hiding, scared that their ashewo behaviour will become public knowledge. He's already in the wrong, he shouldn't be having conversations about meeting up and dates with anyone. When will we be honest and call a bad thing by its name? Why should a man or woman in the highest level of a committed relationships be planning meetups with anyone, without his/her partner knowing? You can't say "let me wait and see until he does it", because he will do it and you will shed hot bitter years and everyone here who told you to keep quiet will disappear. Think I'm lying? Search for a thread where a woman saw messages on her husband's phone chatting with girls and people here told her to keep quiet, that it was just "chatting, he was innocent, leave his phone, prayerful" etc. She came later on, devastated that he went on to have a 3sum with the girls he was chatting to. And all her advisers were conveniently quiet. |
How did he react when you threw your drama? Did he deny, admit or accept or pass blame? |
That is a picture of us assembling our open terrarium.

PLANTS This it the hard part. You see, a lot of professional gardeners are in the business because, well, man must wack. So they don't take the time to know all about their business. None of them have heard of a terrarium. Most don't properly identify the plants but they do know the right growing condition. Sadly, half of them will prioritise making a sale rather than being honest and giving you want you need. So you have to do your research. Look around and get as much info as you can from the internet, get pictures of your needed plants and then go to the gardeners and carefully select them. A closed terrarium requires plants that will grow naturally with lots of moisture and high humidity. So our local plants are great in this because Nigeria has that environment naturally (if you're in the South). Plants like Cactus and Succulents (example of a succulent is Aloe vera) are desert plants and require plenty of sun and a little quantity of water. So if you wanna use them, it has to be an open terrarium. Below are examples of close and open terrarium.

TERRARIUM SUPPLIES A glass jar. It must be glass, plastic will break under the pressure it can be any type of jar, even an old Mayonnaise jar will do. markets in Lagos will provide one. Rocks and pebbles or beads. I chose white rocks and pebbles but I've seen glass beads used and anything that will give drainage so that your roots don't sit in water and rot. This mimics the earth we plant on daily: underneath the soil is a harder substance. This is actually the most expensive thing to buy. Charcoal. To deodorise everything. Moss or a type of netting material. This helps the spol not to fall to the bottom of the pot. Plants. You need small, slow-growing plants which require low light. Decor. Some small toys will look nice in them.

A terrarium is a good way of teaching about Natural sciences. Kids can build one and monitor it to see the effect of humidity, heat, light and moisture on certain plants. It's a good start to explaining why certain plants cannot grow in certain places and a place to start challenging young minds to develop a way to grow anything anywhere (so that our children won't buy tomatoes for N40,000 whilst we lament #TeachSTEMtoKids). It's a great way to explain how our world is being affected by pollution and how the loss of our rainforests around the world will end up affecting Mankind. This is important to Nigeria because we just recently passed a bill banning the export of charcoal because people were cutting down forests (deforestation) and reducing the population of Kosso wood for example. And the more you deforest, the more you mess up the ecosystem. And that makes the earth unliveable. |
Assemble your supplies and that's it. Use a funnel to get the soil into the hard with small openings.

So, subject to another thread in Agriculture section: https://www.nairaland.com/2894705/hibiscus-flower-society-calling-all/12#46078040 I decided to build a Terrarium. A terrarium is a mini garden, which acts like a tropical greenhouse. It is a great tool to teach kids about the atmosphere, humidity, CO2 emissions, horticulture, Agriculture and Science. It's awesome! Plus it looks nice. In the 1800s, an English botanist, Nathaniel Ward, travelled back from India with some plant specimens. He kept them in glass containers and realised that they thrived all through the months-long journey in the sealed container. And that was where a terraium was discovered. A terrarium can be open or closed. I built 2 open one's but will build a closed one with my babies so we can all learn. A closed terrarium will require watering every 2 weeks because it is a sealed environment that works like a rainforest: indirect sunlight, a lot of moisture in the air (you will actually see beads of water form on the glass), a substrate that has drainage. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrarium

Some tips: moisten the soil before placing it in your bar so it doesn't fall about. Use a small plastic spoon as your shovel. PLANTS This it the hard part. Terrarium So, I've mentioned this before but the more I delved into it, the more fascinating it was. A terrarium is a mini garden, which acts like a tropical greenhouse. It is a great tool to teach kids about the atmosphere, humidity, CO2 emissions, horticulture, Agriculture and Science. It's awesome! Plus it looks nice. In the 1800s, an English botanist travelled back from India with some plant specimens. A closed terrarium will require watering every 2 weeks because it is a sealed environment that works like a rainforest: indirect sunlight, a lot of moisture in the air (you will actually see beads of water form on the glass), a substrate that has drainage. HOW TO BUILD A TERRARIUM First, look at your home or office, decide where you want to place it. It should never be in front of a window or bright sunlight because the glass will magnify the effects of the sun's rays and cook the plants. |
So i built my terrarium. Ko easy! But i made all the mistakes so i could share with you how to go about it in a more efficient manner. It just needs planning and gathering of resources beforehand. Will post pics and details |
But everyone has left the original issue ![]() MMotimo, thank you for what you wrote (I'm kinda worried that they may come for your head for saying so). If you want to work, please do. If you want to stay home, please do. The choice of your spouse matters more than that decision when it comes to spousal abuse. Ronke Shonde had a job and died. Other women had no jobs and died. So clearly being a SaHM doesn't equate to disrespect and abuse. OP, I really feel the wife should bring her family into this issue. Because even her MiL is supporting bringing the girl back and thats worrying. And if she cannot stay where she is, does she have some money to rent a one-bedroom apartment? It doesn't have to be in Lagos, if she has relatives she trusts outside let her to around there and rent one (it's much cheaper). But returning to that house and bringing that maid back is a recipe for disaster. Her husband has an agenda. |
jefferyminator0:Your sweetie-pie is so cute! But please don't make her hair with such tight styles: baby's hair is not as strong as adults and she's losing the hair around her hairline. There are so many cute 'dos for little girls. Plus she can use a conditioner daily on her wet hair it and wash only once a week with shampoo, then seal the moisture with coconut oil or shea butter (when wet). That makes her hair softer. |
But where are the prominent members of Family section? No pictures Should we call names... ![]() |
Don't you need a professional camera for this? |
