These days, Lee Beaumont is perfectly happy to get a call from a telemarketer. In fact, he’s the one making a profit from the unsolicited sales calls.

The BBC reports that Beaumont became so sick of getting calls from marketing companies that he changed his phone number settings so that incoming callers have to pay him a small fee to connect.

Since changing his number in November 2011, Beaumont says he’s made about 300 pounds ($464) from the calls. Using a service called PhonepayPlus, Beaumont charges incoming callers 10 pence to connect and additional charges for the longer he stays on the line.

"Because I'm getting annoyed with PPI phone calls when I'm trying to watch Coronation Street so I'd rather make 10p a minute," he told the BBC. “I want cold calls.”

Beaumont receives 70 percent of the take from such calls, adding that he now goes out of his way to keep telemarketers on the line for longer periods of time.

Beaumont says he fully discloses the charges when companies ask for his number. The “0871” line does raise some eyebrows with company representatives, but many still elect to pay for the chance to make a sale.

PhonepayPlus, the company Beaumont enlisted for his pay-to-call numbers, said it discourages individuals from setting up similar lines. "Premium rate numbers are not designed to be used in this way and we would strongly discourage any listeners from adopting this idea, as they will be liable under our code for any breaches and subsequent fines that result," the company told the BBC.

For his part, Beaumont said he keeps a separate, private number for personal calls.

"I don't use my normal Leeds number for anyone but my friends and family,” he told the BBC.

There are various options for setting up similar pay lines in the U.S., although most are targeted to individuals setting up a small business for ventures such as psychic lines or adult chats. Skype used to offer a service called Skype Prime, which allowed it to charge for incoming calls but that service has since been discontinued.

saxywale: for heavy browsing that involves watching HD channels on broadband and opening several YouTube videos at the same time. I give it to opera. for just simple bland browsing and searching the web, I give it to chrome. I stopped using Mozilla immediately chrome was released.

let's put it this way. opera is like Mercedes Benz(luxury ,rugged n comes with many extras as standard, while chrome is like Toyota( bland and ideal for everyday use) and Mozilla is like Mazda(just there, bland n not so reliable, crashes a lot).




For banking services and online transactions. I will pick IE any day anytime. It's security features is the best. My bank's online services pages won't even open or load if it's not IE.It's like a Volvo.lol

thanks o.. Most peeps don't know what opera can do seriously. For example when am browsing on naira land and there's a game or football match. Instead of reloading or refreshing every second to view new updates. All i do is set the tab to reload every 1 minute or even 2 minute or custom minute. Please tell me another browser that can do this.

Abeg go collect one bottle of eva water in my name from iya basira . Lol. You just said the way it is . Most peeps don't know about opera. Chrome is known because of the ad power of google. Remove that advantage i guess no one would even instal it on their systems. I got chrome but its very drab and slow on my system.

what would you call the download speed of a browser or loading of news widgets on my opera? Ain't it what makes up how fast a browser is? We all do use our browsers for different things so fast is a relative term.

maybe you need to understand am still on point. Fastness does not entail how pages load alone it entails how flexible a browser is when using its other features.. Like whats the crash rate, the load time eetc

Firefox used to be the ish, but it crashes like no man's biz. And I've never been a fan of Opera, the interface isn't appealing to IT heads.

most things you guys don't know is opera pioneered most of the features in both fire fox and chrome. Just name it.. Is it private browsing, speed dials, multi tabs or even widgets? I guess most people just use their browser for just surfing . Opera is much more than that, There's no better tool for hacking than opera. Go figure. Let me take a screen shot of my opera browser for you to see. You would marvel.

Most peeps don't know the lovely features on opera.. Let me give you another tip.. On opera you can turn off images of websites though all browsers can do this but do you know that on opera you could show cached images or even allow images on some tabs while disabling images for other tabs. This goes a long way in reducing data consumption by sites with heavy image content.

Nothing beats my opera. Its much more than just a browser. From mouse gestures, to built in note pad, wand for password management. As in opera is for advanced and unique users who knows what browsing the internet means. Also the opera cache is awesome. I open over 40 tabs let then load disconnect my connection, shut down my system and when i restart it my opera displays all the pages the way i left them. Tell me what beats this. I just dey start m. Don't let me mention other things like speed dials, customizable proxy settings, ability to disguise your browser as i.e , fire fox or even netscape.

Tell me whats the difference between someone who died of guns and bombs and another who died of chemicals. Ain't it all death? Thousands have died since the begining of this so called war but the west didn't deem it fit to act but now because chemical weapons was used someone has to take a beat for it. Who would fight for those who died of normal gun shots. Tell me those who have died of gun shell if they were to be alive and were to be asked how they would have loved to die . Would any have chosen either of the two? So it is now okay that a government or rebels can continue to kill its people as long as they used guns and knife.
