I am happy to see the army make such progress, but I wonder what changed all of a sudden. I have to wonder how much of the work is being done by the South African mercenaries. |
OREMUSSANCTUS:Where could I get a sample of Jesus' blood? I'd like to have it tested to see where his Y-chromosome came from, since Mary had a 'virgin birth'. I'm betting the y-chromosome belongs to a Roman soldier. |
malvisguy212:Atheists do not believe in Satan either. |
Nigeria has simultaneously launched an offensive to retake a series of towns with the backing of hundreds of mercenaries from South Africa and the former Soviet Union in a bid to secure towns ahead of a rescheduled March 28 election. This tells you almost everything you need to know, though I think it's the other way around. The military is backing the mercenaries and not the other way around. |
malvisguy212:No I am atheist. |
malvisguy212:And if this "god" sides with the atheists for using their brains instead of being mindless sheep what will you do? |
Jesus also said that he came to turn family members against each other. Not a positive point of view. |
I'm atheist but I generally agree with humanist thought. WHO IS MY GOD?? ![]() |
goshap:Lol, this is a meeting place for freethinkers so it's neither a pro-gay nor anti-gay thread. Being anti-homophobic is also a choice and a right. |
s3nn2x:I used to be very homophobic; not anymore. I see no reason to oppose homosexuality, gay marriage, or transvestites. I also do not oppose polygamy as long as the woman also has the right to multiple husbands. Really whatever sexual or family arrangements that consenting adults wish to make is none of my business. |
Jameselias:So the whites were so afraid of the power of African juju that they.....destroyed it? Doesn't sound like the juju had any power in the first place. |
I would just laugh at them and their silliness. |
Sweden has done quite well, given that, not only do they have no juju, but only about 3% of them actually go to church. How did tiny Belgium take over the Congo in the face of all that juju? (by the way, the answer that I have been given by a believer in juju is that African juju only works for certain things, and does not repel invaders) ![]() I would love to see a test carried out: two groups of people are isolated and given the same land and resources, one of whom practices no religion or juju and instead just works and develops their resources; the other does no work but just practices religion or juju. Who will come out ahead? |
ALKARULEZZ:You are certainly on the road to becoming one. This is how it starts; this is what I was doing as I was in the process of dumping my religion and I am now atheist. |
iboladeji:As always, the 'devil' is in the details. Defining what is mundane vs. what religious is even itself subject to debate (hence the salafists). In any case Muslims are fond of saying that Islam is a complete way of life, and for many that means that every behavior is regulated by Islam. Other, not so strict Muslims, like sufis, would have a broader view of what is mundane and not regulated by religion. Even the Shia have quite different beliefs (praying only 3 times a day, for example). Also, salafists and other adjectives are just names used to cause confusion. No, they give clarity so that people can have some idea what type of Islam a person practices. If someone tells me they are just a Muslim, about the only thing I can really assume about them is that they accept Muhammad as a prophet and believe that the Quran is the word of God. If they tell me they are salafist or sufi, I can get a much better idea of their approach. In any case, your own prophet Muhammad said that the Muslims would divide into 73 sects, who are you to say that there are not really any divisions in Islam? |
johnydon22:I love that facebook page. It's like Jesus Daily for the Christians. |
iboladeji:My training and my work are in the field of history so I hope I have some historical perspective of events. I can agree with much of what you wrote. Of course Muslims are not obligated to marry a child just because Muhammad did. Every religion adapts itself to the culture of the time (obviously the Salafists would disagree with that). A Muslim being against child marriage is kind of like a Christian being against slavery: there is no clear religious basis to be against either one and there are specific passages in the holy scriptures permitting them, but few people (such as atheists ) would call a Christian out for being against slavery when the Bible permits it.Christians should also be against almost all divorce and loaning money at interest, but you know how that works--there's always away around such rules. Regarding Islam, there are other things to criticize and I think that focusing on things other than the age of Aisha is more interesting. |
An2elect2:So common sense requires that I believe in virgin births, a talking snake, a talking donkey, someone who walks on water, and a god who acts like a spoiled child? (I have to admit it would be very convenient to know someone who can turn water into wine, however I can't believe that it's possible). |
I misread the title and laughed. I thought it said "see pastor washing away the sins of his member with soap. |
How do I feel about atheists? I like and respect a lot of them, including myself. ![]() |
justlove91:I don't believe in god. |
The danger is not in any God punishing you because you don't believe in Him, He is too emotionally balancedStopped reading right there. |
Atheist here. This whole issue of Muhammad marrying a 6-year-old girl is not a big deal from a historical perspective, as it is rightly pointed out that many cultures have accepted child marriage until quite recent times. I personally do not use the 'Muhammad-as-pedophile' approach, as he was a man of his time. The problem is that Muslims hold up Muhammad as the role model for all of humanity for all time. Whether or not some European ruler married a 6 year old back in the year 1400 doesn't really matter because nobody would consider him to be best man in history, worthy of being imitated until the end of time, unlike Muslims who are expected to try to imitate the life of Muhammad as the proper way of living. As a result, any Muslim who is against child marriage could be rightly criticised from a strict Islamic point of view. The Quran even gives instructions on how to divorce your pre-pubescent wife. Considering that Islam is considered to be final and unchangeable, this means that child marriage can never really be outlawed in an Islamic state. That, in my view, is a problem. I would note that Christianity does not actually forbid child marriage either, and that neither religion forbids slavery. |
Am not a Christian (in fact I'm a hardcore atheist), but this form of prayer goes back long before the Jews. It was also used as a form of respect towards kings and rulers in the Middle East (look up the term proskynesis) for thousands of years. Muslims simply use a tradition of respect that was used for many centuries towards gods (yes, pagan gods) and men. Nothing prophetic about it. |
chigoville:Agnosticism certainly puts you on the side of reason in an argument! Just keep demanding absolute proof from religious people and watch them go crazy! |
5. Does God exist? We know God exists because he pursues us. He is constantly initiating and seeking for us to come to him. What an absurd question and answer. If there is a god and he wants to reveal himself he can do it, and not hide and whisper in the ears of some people who then claim to be prophets. |
malvisguy212:Then you admit that god is not all-powerful. |
Atheist here. I have my popcorn and am enjoying this thread. Please continue. ![]() |
And I have a sign from the Flying Spaghetti Monster (pasta be upon him)! RAmen!
|
timonski:Because agnosticism, atheism, and deism involve varying states of religious belief. |
OREMUSSANCTUS:You don't 'join'. It's not a club or a private group. Your beliefs (or lack thereof) determine whether or not you are one of us. For example if you don't believe in God then you are already an atheist, even if you go to church. |
