Nigeria Land Area- 923,768 km²

We need more refineries to not only cater for our ever growing consumer base which will create a competitive business environment but also create jobs for Nigerians!

Its even worse when that same partner is unwilling to tackle the problem and find lasting solutions to their sexual needs but would selfishly and unapologetically advise that their spouse should m.asturbate as a way of satisfying their sexual urge!

The UK currently has seven refineries. They are all located near port facilities to ease crude tanker access.

Canada is home to 15 refineries, all of which are operated by Canadian Fuels members and represent the country's refining capacity.

The Company's Refining Unit operates 13 major refineries in the Russian Federation:

There are six refineries in the country - four on the coast and two inland. Crude oil is refined at South Africa's four crude oil refineries.

NIGERIA WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH 70 REFINERIES OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, you still missed the point that most Nigerians don't pay tax, and government is poor in collecting taxes.

Has everything to do with the fact that most of the country is in the informal sector.

Sorry, but it is the truth. I hate the truth, but there it is.
I ask again...where do you want the youths who are currently unemployed and constitute 40-50% to pay taxes from?
You keep looking at the citizens as a means of tax collection....has the same government been truthful or transparent about the revenue generated from their agencies?
Nigeria remains the poverty capital of the world where most families cannot sustain one square meal daily and you want to burden them with taxes from a currency whose purchasing power is on a downward slide?
Your truth may not be the absolute even if you place it on repetition!

[s]
backbencher:
So, basically, you want power at a cheap price with no thought about how the power and generating companies would pay for improiving things, or maintaining things.

You want an investor to come in and build things for you without said investor recouping his income.

Right. No wonder we don't have light.
[/s]
You are going ahead of yourself!
Where is the electricity supply to start with?
What are you even saying?
So we must suffer for the ineptitude of an FG who lacks the foresight in terms of service delivery?
I just told you that Nigerians pay for electricity bills yet no service delivery...Nigerians pay for a Transformer, feederpiller and cable wires which should be the sole responsibility of PHED!
What is the responsibility of a service delivery company like PHED?
Should i just throw away monies and i end up not getting the services that i require?

Stop moving the goalpost. I have proven to you we don't pay enough taxes. Accept it and know peace, and that's it.
Don't move the goal posts.
Again, we don't pay enough in tax, even in the VAT you went on about, and as such we don't have enough revenue to fund things. Your questions about African countries are not relevant to that discussion.
We are reliant on oil for 70% of our budget, and 30% of us pay income tax.Oil prices are also very very unstable all the time. Tell me, why won't we take loans.? Even during the GEJ era we took loans because we were not earning enough from oil even above $100 per barrel.
We are a poor resource dependent nation. Always have been. And the minute we face that fact, things will get better.
With profound respect to you,it would seem that you only read to react than comprehend!
The african countries you gave out...what is their unemployment rate?
What is the unemployment rate of Nigeria before the recession and during the pandemic?
How do you want Nigerians to pay more in taxes when over 40-50% of our population(mostly the youths) remain unemployed?
Will the unemployed that are made up of the youths get the tax monies from yahoo yahoo or prostitution?

If you had comprehended properly,i said these african countries you rolled out gleefully have not only reduced unemployment thereby increasing their tax net but have also attracted, through their flexible policies, local and foreign investors/businesses which further increased employment and boosted their tax returns!
This is one of the ways a government can offer service delivery to their citizens!

Aside Oil revenue, agencies of government have been remitting less than what they generate in a month.....I gave an instance of NPA!
If you combine the ACTUAL amount of funds generated from these agencies of government including the extortive and exorbitant taxes Nigerians are paying through their noses,it will meet 90% of the revenue gotten from oil! I stand to be corrected!

backbencher:
All you have said is all very well, but you still missed my point....where I said....that government setting the prices for the discos means they cannot make enough of a profit since the price set is below the price of production.

At the end, we can do all you said , and if the producer and distributor of power cannot make a profit, because they produce power above a cost of N80 perkwh and sell it at N49-71 per kwh, losing money, they would not be able to finance the sector.

And yes, many people don't pay for power. Power theft is a cold cold reality. And people praise power thieves. And even if meters come in, people bypass them. Sad, but it happens.

For more information, read this article

Good morning
In a nutshell,What you have analyzed is simply because the FG CANNOT supply electricity to every community or state in Nigeria!
The TRANCOS are still limited to 5000mW which is not enough to supply to every household or industry in Nigeria hence they will definitely run at a loss even if the private companies are the ones running the show in terms of pricing!
They have tried and its already failing!
Hence, there should be a constitutional alteration to empower all tiers of government to produce their own electricity or get an investor to do such!
I dont blame those who dont pay for power they dont even use....how can one pay as much as 6k estimated bill and yet only receive 2hrs of electricity every month? Nigerians pay for a faulty/new Transformer,a faulty feederpiller, replacement of fuse...Is that not madness?
They praise them because there is no service delivery on the part of the providers!
First, they should fix the power supply and ensure consistency....then they can send their staffs to monitor the connectivity of the electronic meters.....Some People will always bypass but not without the knowledge of the PHED staffs who aid them to do such!
Good afternoon!

Yes, and it happens because we cannot outproduce the big rice countries, until we mechanize. And when that happens, then we can talk.
No sir ....It happens due to the availability and affordability of the products due to consistent power supply, harmonized tax, reduced transport cost and road accessibility in those countries........
Even if we mechanise,as long as we still have persisting issues with unavailable power supply, multiple taxation, hiked transport cost,we will still head no where!
If the FG cannot do anything about those issues i mentioned, the manufacturer will definitely heap the burden of his production cost on the consumers and the consumer will be forced to buy the commodity that is affordable from another country due to the funds at their disposal or will outrightly decide not to purchase locally made but expensive products from Nigeria which will eventually affect the manufacturer whose commodity will be returned and they will run at a loss!

backbencher:
And in response....

The government says that value added tax (VAT) and company income tax have been on the increase since 2015.

But a UN report this year showed that in 2018, Nigeria's estimated VAT gap - the shortfall between potential and actual VAT collections - was one of the largest in Africa

And...

.According to some estimates, Nigeria has one of the world's lowest ratios of tax to GDP.

That is the total amount of tax collected as a proportion of GDP - the value of the country's goods and services.

In 2016, it was at 6%, going by figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), a grouping of the world's leading market economies.

That is the latest year for which data is available.

The tax-to-GDP ratio in South Africa was 29%, Ghana 18%, Egypt 15% and Kenya 18%, says the OECD.

The average for OECD members - which includes all the advanced economies - was 34%
I have a simple question......the african countries you mentioned.....what is the purchasing power of their currency?
What are the developmental strides of those countries you mentioned compared to ours?
I ask....The taxes that are available to the authorities...what have they been able to use it for?
The agencies that have been unable to remit their actual cashflow....what steps have been taken to plug such loopholes and ensure the actual funds are remitted to the coffers of the country?
Lets stop comparing ourselves to african countries that have gone very far in terms of service delivery to their citizens!

backbencher:
And finally
.In 2018, 19 million Nigerians paid into federal or state coffers, according to government data.
A World Bank report in that year put the country's economically active population at 65 million - so even with rising numbers of taxpayers in recent years, that is still less than 30% paying tax

SAUCE.
Nigerian power sector has a liquidity problem
1.Government sets the price for power...which means power companies lose money, since the set price is below the price of producing the power.
In practice, DISCOS reject power by GENCOS, because they don't have the cash to pay for it.
2.40% of customers don't pay for power.

As a result, all the discos have made losses, and have had to be bailed out, and three of them are in the hands of their debtors now.
Have energy experts not advised the FG to decentralize the power sector through the amendment of the constitution?
Does the FG have the wherewithal to supply adequate and consistent power to all the communities in Nigeria including their states?
The answer is an absolute NO!
There are states with the financial muscle to create and establish Power stations in their state but the law is saying that any power station must first be fed to the national grid!
If the states have the mandate or constitutional powers to provide power to their states, the burden will be taken away from the FG!
You are saying only 40% pay for power...How many energy consumers in Nigeria have electronic meters?
How many consumers have stable power supply in Nigeria?
More than 70% of power consumers resident here are on estimated billing.....why should they pay for services that they dont even get?
Does that make any sense to you? Haba huh
PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s Iconic Rice Paddy Pyramids To Be Evacuated Tomorrow by openmine(m): 9:34pm On Jan 26, 2022
backbencher:
1.Power supply is in private hands, and we have bad power because government sets the price of power , instead of the power companies, leaving many of them running at a loss (and three discos have already gotten into trobule, with at least one under AMCON control
So who loses from not buying or patronizing the local products or commodity due to the unavailability of power?
The manufacturer or the consumer?
Are you aware that there is a purchase of huge amount of rice smuggled from countries that share border with us at a far lower price than the amount in Nigeria?

backbencher:
2.We don't pay enough tax as it is...tax to gdp is 6.4% . In a way, that's why we don't have enough cash to link every state by rail...which could bring transport costs low.
@ highlighted...This is totally untrue!
Nigerians have paid more than enough taxes unless you are not in this country or commenting from another country!
We pay about more than four different taxes when when transacting online!
For every purchase made on any commodity, there is a VAT
Lets even admit without conceding that we dont pay enough taxes as you are alleging, what have the authorities done with the ones that they currently have?
How many major roads have the FG(both past and present) done with the taxes that have been given?
What about the health and educational sector that keep going on strike to press home their demand for enough funding which is a necessity?
Furthermore, aside tax payment, one of the reasons why FG is finding it hard to get funds is because most of the revenue generating agencies do not remit their actual cashflow.....Imagine an agency like NPA that was meant to remit 500billion at a particular year only remited 50 billion...is that the fault of Nigerians?
Lets even ask....are we not suppose to run a federated system of government where state own their own resources and remit to the centre?
Most of the rail projects could have been handled by most of the states with or without the involvement of the FG!

backbencher:
3.Rice cannot sell below N6000.....unless we run an industrial economy with a very very strong naira, or we run a communist economy of pretending our currency is strong...till it isn't.
Rice can be sold for even less if the FG fixes the power sector and reduce the multiple taxes that have ensured the manufacturers reflect it on their production cost!
Is it rocket science that countries with adequate power supply like Ghana sell their products a lot cheaper than Nigeria?
PoliticsRe: Nigeria’s Iconic Rice Paddy Pyramids To Be Evacuated Tomorrow by openmine(m): 9:06pm On Jan 26, 2022
backbencher:
So, how would you then pay the farmer, transporter, wholesaler, supplier, miller, etc etc...out of that N6000.

What you are suggesting is tantamount to me suggesting that we should pay you a third of your salary instead of the whole lot.

Why I am making fun is that you people want cheap stuff, because you think that people should suffer loss so that you can have 50kg rice for 6000 naira?

No wonder your country is in debt. It really costs a lot in loans to keep things cheap.

Communist countries tried what you are suggesting now, and most of them went broke eventually.
So whats the essence of parading locally made rice when its more expensive than the foreign rice?
If the issue is production cost, why cant the government tackle the issue of unavailable power supply. Multiple taxations and accessibility of roads to ensure a reduction in the cost of these products?
Mind you if the prices dont come down, more consumers will keep patronizing rice from countries where their production cost!

PoliticsRe: NLC Reacts As FG Suspends Fuel Subsidy Removal by openmine(m): 1:35pm On Jan 25, 2022
No one is saying that the fuel subsidy wont go away eventually but, beyond the upcoming election as reason behind the suspension,do we know the grave consequences of removing subsidy when there are no local refineries in place?
There will be untold hardship that will adversely affect not just the economy but everyone no matter their financial status!
This will cause anarchy and what followed the #EndSars protest will be child's play compared what we may witness post Subsidy removal!

Now that the NNPC has been privatised, they should start giving out licenses to those who intend investing or building refineries in the country!

The federal government should start rehabilitating the remaining 3 moribund refineries and ensure the modular refineries that they managed to build start refining as soon as possible!

Once we are able to have more than enough capacity locally to supply consumers with enough refined products, subsidy will die a natural death!

If the current administration had taken loans very early in their first term to modify and rehab those dying refineries,by now,we would have been talking about building new refineries to compliment the ones already functioning!
