It depends on the ppa!
If your ppa don't see you for a month,they inform old corpers who are in charge of the corp members in that domain to find you or know the reason for your absence!
If you are found and it was discovered you went AWOL or travelled without informing your ppa or your leader,you can get severely punished by them or by the LG inspector if they receive information about a corper's misbehavior by the ppa!
Just plead with the ppa and ensure such doesn't happen again or gets to the LG inspector!
Some punishments can range from depriving you the allowee for that month to even making you spend an extra year!

You know , one of my favorite countries is the former East Germany, which , apart from the fact that it was a repressive state, did try to make everything free.(One of my dreams is to have a country with freedom of speech and the lifestyle of East germany at its peak)

The problem was, they ran into debt fast, and the debt helped bring down their country (it was part of the great fall of communism in 1989/90)....and eventually they had to merge with West Germany

Now Germany has free education, but citizens pay higher taxes as a result...and it is not like they like it.(That's why their government performs .....they know they are getting a lot of money from the very high tax rate, and if they don't show something, they will end up like Marie Antionette and her dearly beloved husband)

Nigeria is dependent on revenue from raw materials, whose prices we don't control, and we only tax 30% of the taxable population because most of us are too poor to be taxes. And the oil revenue is too low for us to survive on...and even at $90-100 per barrel ten years ago, some universites still increased fees. Germany is an indiustrial nation, and even then they still pay higher taxes.

The truth is, nothing comes for free. Things cost. Free education is a misnomer...someone is paying for it in higher taxes, or higher prices for something.

And let me tell you a secret...I don't like it. I hate it. I know too many poor Nigerians (I just advanced someone some money to pay for his school fees a few weeks ago..and I don't expect him to pay it back by the way, and if he tries to I will chase him with cutlass)...and I know we are suffering

But even then, we need world class universities to compete with the world...and the money is not going to come from the sky

You still don't get it despite the fact that you say you hate saying such!
Not everyone had that opportunity of sitting for a scholarship whether government or private based and not everyone will still be considered for the scholarship!
Not everyone has the funds that your parents used to send you or your siblings to school!
Taxing and over taxing the citizens that have already been burden by a series of taxes is unwise and insensitive!
If the school or university decides to go ahead with such increments, then watch how corruption that is already increasing in civil service will go higher....watch armed robbery and kidnapping become a norm!
There will always be spiral effects when a government decides to be insensitive to the sufferings of its citizens!

Plus resource control is not the answer....the thing is even with derivation, Bayelsa Medical University charges as high as 600000 PER session. (and it is supposedly government run)...plus most states don't even have enough resources to sell to begin with (Zamfara is an exception...but thos e guys are not serious).

The harsh truth is that universites are expensive.

You complained that the state revenue is low right?
So how do they get funds or increase their IGR when the instruments are solely in the hands of the federal government?
If for instance a state like zamfara utilizes their resources in gold,that can boost their IGR and fund important infrastructures and sector of their economy!
If power generation and policing is decentralized,it will enable investors to move into the states and create employment for the youths!
This will boost the IGR of the state in terms of taxes that will be collected from these companies!
Others states have natural resources to harness and enhance their IGR!
The present system impedes growth from the states!

LOL....I was never that fortunate....even the government scholarship I got was because I wrote an exam...and it was enough to fund my textbooks only. Not my fees.

My parents did pay for my fees...by working (for some time) two jobs, and doing side hustles, and even at one point taking a loan.

My parents were fortunate when they were students...but back then the average student number was 5000 or less, plus there were only 6 universites, and then it was the oil boom years.....

The fact is, as much as I hate to say this, unviersity educaiton is not cheap. Unless you want us to take a loan....university educaiton is not cheap. And God knows I HATE THAT FACT.

Still,you had an opportunity to write for a scholarship which many don't have such privilege hence it would be unfair to put them in the same category as you!

But like I said,not all parents have the wherewithal to access two jobs that can even give them the required funds to not only provide shelter,food and other basic amenities but also sustain a school fee for their wards!
Hence,any suggestion you are making to make education affordable should not indirectly affect the citizens who have been trying their best to manage in a system that is unfair to them and their pocket!

No, because the falling value of the naira has wiped off the value of the increase...and even then, the increase is not enough.

It costs 600000 NAIRA as at 2012 to train one university student in Nigeria. Most fees in government run schools are very low.




And most states have low revenue because

1.Low tax to gdp ratios...most states have tax to gdp ratios of less than 2%

2.Low oil prices means low revenues available for sharing...and we are not earning enough from oil to pay for everything (and most northern states have abandoned agric as a fund maker...and even if they were earning money from agric., they cannot spend all of it on education in university alone)

Like I said before,your insistence on taxing already taxed and inflation ravaged citizen is totally insensitive on your part!
What is the standard is the standard of living for an average danish citizen?
What is the inflation rate in Denmark compared to that of Nigeria?
When you remove subsidy,the inflation rate will quadruple!
Transportation will shoot up,food prices will go even higher and who bears the brunt for the subsidy removal?
Universities funding must not be from fleecing the beneficiary if the aim of this government or other government to make education affordable to an average citizen!
How can a parent afford a humongous school fees when the little money they make has been devalued by the current inflation?

Your last two points made has to do with the change of policies from the legislation!
The current policy where the government rely solely on the sharing of monthly allocation cannot be sustainable!
The states must be meant to control their own resources and power should be taken from the exclusive list!

Bros, there is a way we can keep fees low...either tax every Nigerian at rates of 50% of their earnings...or pray and fast that oil goes up to $200 per barrel...so that we can earn the revenue we need to keep costs low.

We can also do what is done in many developed countries...and offer loans to university students, which they start paying back over a period of 25 years once they get a job on graduation...or start their business.

University is expensive. Yes, people like my father went to university cheap...but student numbers were much lower then, so funds spent on university made a lot of sense...plus my popsy still had to go and look for scholarship even then. Not now where the number of people in my popsy's alma mater are twenty if not more times what it was back then.

You speak as if you are not from the country or as if every citizen has money to throw around!

Do you know the taxes that an ordinary Nigerian has been subjected to pay for?
What has the FG used the ones being paid by Nigerians to help alleviate the sufferings for an average Nigerian?

You were fortunate enough to have a parent who can get a scholarship for you!
You cannot say the same for others students whose parents can't afford an outrageous school fees or a scholarship that gets to few people who are opportuned!

The funding issue has been there for a while...and poor funding is one of the harsh reasons why our universites are bad.

So are you saying the best and only way the university will be adequately funded is by inflating the school fees of students?
The universities today that have increase school fees for the last 6 years,are they better off than where they were?
Funding for a state university can come from the state government....its not as if the funds go directly to the coffers of the state university like a private university!

Me that is saying it, I don't like saying it...but the truth is, Nigerian universities are far behind the world..and one of the reasons for that is money....and if steps are not taken now, the children of the rich who can go to better privatre schools at home and abroad will be getting jobs ahead of the poor children who go to substandard universites.

At 60 dollars a year, no university would be able to pay staff decent salaries, build new facilites (and Kaduna State is trying to build new facilites at its campuses), and attract more staff.

And even at 10000k, the midgeto El Rufai is being very nice. He could have gone as high as over one million naira....which is the price in some big universites.

Universites cost money. And yes, university is free in many European countries...in return for higher taxes than exist in Nigeria.

That's still not enough reason to outrageously inflate the school fees of a university funded by the state government!
Where do you or the state government expect the parents to get such humongous funds when they are managing to pay 26k?
No doubt,the university must be properly ande adequately equipped but should that be done at the expense of the students?
If the goal of the state government is to encourage education, then I don't see why the school fees cannot be subsidied to accommodate students!
If such increments persists,then don't be surprised if there is an increase in banditry and kidnapping in that state!

The problem with those complaining about fees in Uni of Kaduna is that the fees are not sufficent enough to sustain the university

100K naira is just 250 dollars. 26000 naira is just about 80-90 dollars.

And it is from that 260 dollars that we somehow expect the university to look like a place that charges 3000 dollars or more per session.

University education is not cheap. That's the honest truth...and if we want fees to remain at 20000 or lower, or even free...we must be prepared to pay for it...either in higher taxes or in things like removal of subsides on petrol, and power.

If that's the case,then only those involved in unsruplous activities will be in the university!

Where are the parents going find that kind of money when its even hard to pay 26k in this inflation ravaged economy?

If your parents/guardian can afford to pay as much as 250k,then you are fortunate but not all parents can even pay up to 30k when there are other important expenses to make!

If indeed macban was not the one that made the threat to the delta state government, why didn't the association swiftly deny that such threats were false?
Why did they wait or keep mum until 'mend' recently gave them a reply before denying the rumour?
