I can't just stop laughing at the way you guys think. Firstly you accused Tinubu of being used by the North to divide the South and later you also accused Tinubu of nurturing hatred against Igbos to keep himself relevant in Yorubaland! This is very laughable. You guys arrogate so much powers to Tinubu than he can possibly wield. How you assume that a private citizen who is not holding any Public office can achieve all these ceaslessly amuse me. Whether he is anti-igbo or pro-Igbo can best be answered by Tinubu or his Lietenants and their antecedents. What is the roles of Igbos in a politician being relevant in the politics of Yorubaland even when igbos are increasingly becoming less relevant in the politics of Nigieria? nku5: |
This is the mistake you are making, you don't understand the politics of Nigeria deeply as you assume. 1) Dino Melaye was part of the ANC that merged with others to form APC. He actually left the PDP after being rigged out in the primaries for the House of Reps for the 2011 election and crossed to the ANPP,then ACN where he became the DG of Abubakar Audi Campaign Organization for Kogi 2011 election. 2) Smart Adeyemi had joined the APC shortly after the 2015 and was specifically sponsored by certain vested powers in the APC to neutralize Dino Melaye. 3) In Benue State, what happened was beyond Ortom as a candidate, the entire APC structure left APC for the PDP because of the unfortunate Fulani Herdsmen crisis. 4) Unless the receiving party is moribound, it's difficult to decamp to a new party at the 11th hour and be rewarded with their most prized possession. It almost always leads to crisis. 5) If this should happen, it means the party does NOT value loyalty. You will see those who have invested their time, energy and resources (if not well placated) leaving the party or working to undermine the success of the party. The party needs loyal and committed members to win elections. 6) Presidential election anywhere in the world is not a tea party. It requires a lot of preparations, criss crossing the length and breadth of the country, negotiating and horsetrading with different power brokers. If you plan to win a presidential election in 3 years time and you are still thinking of whether you should decamp or not, then you have been defeated already. AK481: |
Some people have invested their time, energy and resources in opposition parties for years, ensured their merger and nurtured the new party to this level but you think that they will fold their arms while a new enterant at the 11th hour will just stroll into the party and be handed the presidential ticket for the party ? Things don't work like this in real life. Even at the local level, can you name one person in your State or Geopolitical zone who just decamped at the 11th hour and was rewarded with the Governorship ticket and everything went well and he won! Such a political blunder will precipitate crisis in the APC that will lead to it's defeat. AK481: |
Hmn,you people are very funny Sha. Are you for real? You said you have problem with Buhari and you expect Buhari to handover to you? Doesn't it occur to you that Buhari will play a vital role in chosing the APC flag bearer? Do you know anybody who likes to give power to his enemies? Ikinternational: |
Don't mind the guy. I have told him the truth several times, Emperor Imes has come about 1500 years ago. He came as OBATALA in Ile-Ife,S/West of modern Nigeria but he prefers to believe the Arab version of his coming CharlotteFlair: |
You are trying to give answers to a question that was never asked. 1) Was the South ever a monolithic and united political entity? Let's assume that the South was a united political entity, must everybody in the South belong to or support the PDP to prove this 'unity'? Even in the North all the States have NEVER voted for only one party. 2)Our democracy can only grow when the citizens have plurality of options. The idea that only one political party should continue to win the presidential election doesn't augur well for the country. Democracy is NOT limited to the 2015 or 2023 elections. It's a continuous process. Those who are not in power today will be in power tommorow, if only we are patient enough. 3) The Yoruba people know what favour them or not. 4) The Almighty reigns in the affairs of men. He gives power to whoever he wants. ONLY God can authoritatively says whether Tinubu will be president or not. nku5: |
You are free to say whatever you like. They are your opinions and NOT necessarily facts. Osagyefo98: |
What arrant display of arrogance and ignorance! What if it's the Igbos that copied them from Ikwerres? No language is inferior to another and no tribe has an exclusive let alone copyright over anyword or language. You speak your language in YOUR OWN ways and you are asking the Ikwerres to speak their language exactly like you? Are you their God? Who gave you such authority? Who told you your own spelling is the original? How did you arrogate to yourselves the power to determine which language comes first and which one is fake and which one is original? Ikwerres have it's own different dialects and you are insisting Ikwerre must be a dialect of Igbo? Similarities in language in most cases simply shows a common descent e.g both Igbos and Ikwerre languages evolved from the same sources NOT necessarily that Ikwerre language emerged from Igbo. If Igbos say Olisa, Ika say Oliseh, Binis say Oosa, Itshekiri say Oritse and Yoruba say Orisha. Who are you to say one is a bastardized form of the other? Halexgos3: |
Nigeria and indeed most African countries have great problems of ethnic tension because of the long lasting legacies of European colonialism which make tribal identities the basis of sharing national wealth, powers and privileges in artificially created heterogeneous countries. It is the basis of civil wars, political instabilities and corruption in many African Countries. If individual merits are largely used in sharing national wealth, political powers and privileges in these countries, nobody will give a hoot about tribes. In Nigeria, the Fulani ethnic group have mastered the art of Statecraft. Even though they themselves are a minority recently settled ethnic group in Nigeria, have succeeded in forging an amalgam of diversed tribes into the largest power block headed by them. They achieved these between 1804-1903 by conquering different tribes, encouraged them to forgo their tribal identities and embrace a new identity; the Islamic identity which unify everybody in Theocratic States called EMIRATES, many of which are joined together in a Confederacy called the SOKOTO Caliphate. The British Colonialists met this structure and strengthened it by creating a larger political entity encompassing two thirds of Nigieria called Northern Region and handed it over to the Fulani rulers. The Igbos on the other hand doesn't have this advantage. Similar tribes like the Anioma, Etche, Ekpeye and Ikwerre suppose to coalesce into the greater Igbo super ethnic group but they refuse to do so and this was magnified by the defeat of the Igbos in the Civil war with reverberating consequences. However, the nature of life is that you can't always win on all sides. Those who are disadvantaged in one side are advantaged in other areas. The Fulani have advantages in politics and powers but great disadvantages in education and modern indices of development. The Igbos have advantages in education, commerce and enjoy higher quality of life than most of their compatriots. Fortunately, everything is subjected to change and things are changing nowadays. midnighter: |
Sweet heart, different strokes for different folks. The histories, political evolutions and worldviews of different tribes are different, so what they take to be important will also be different. It seems Igbos need more populations/lands through irredentism, Hausa-Fulani have gained this large population through a complex mix of cultural assimilation, religion and conquests. The Yorubas have coalesced into a single formidable group through trade and Empire building. Before British colonialism, the Igbos didn't build centralized large States. Their level of political organization didn't go beyond the village level. Each village operated independently of the other. The Hausa-Fulani and the Yorubas on the other had pre-colonial Empires, City States, large kingdoms and Confederations of small States which brought most of their people under centralized political authorities and promoting a sense of nationalism. 1) There are several Nigerian languages that have gone into extinction especially in the North. E.g Tangale and Ajawa languages in Bauchi State, Gamo- Nungi in Bauchi State, Bassa-Gumma in Nigeria Start. These people switched to Hausa Language but it doesn't mean the people disappeared. 2) All over the world new tribes emerged from previously existing tribes. E.g Seminole tribe of Florida= Native American Muscogees+ Black skaves. Aja People of Benin Republic= Yoruba+ Fon/Ewe Ikwerre= Igbo+ Ijaw+ Bini Itshekiri= Yoruba+ Edo+ European traders 3) We need to do away with the use of ethnic groups as a mean of climbing the social ladder in Nigieria. People should be judged by their individual attributes instead of tribal affiliation. midnighter: |
It's the same way you accuse Fulanis of several attrocities even when the perpetrators are Bolewa, Karekare,Nok, Manga or Bachama. BULLIONVAN4: |
Not necessarily sir. There several thousands of such people in Nigeria. You see ethnic identities are largely self-identities. People who identify as members of a particular ethnic group are those who are WILLING to be identified as such. It doesn't matter if it's based on shared ancestries, just by shared cultures ,assimilation or in most cases a mix of all these. External people can NOT define the identities of any group of people. Halexgos3: |
I started taking note of this division from that episode and I have met several people there after whom I assumed to be Igbos but told me they aren't even if they bear Ebuka or Amarachi. However, you need to understand that this phenomenon of people rejecting some tribal/ethnic identities to which other wrongly give them is NOT restricted to the Igbos. It occurs through out Nigeria and indeed all over the world. It never ceases to amaze and amuse me when young Igbos on Nairaland become angry at such rejection (possibly as a form of unpalatable hangover from the unfortunate civil war). In the North, several tribes exist that we assume are Hausa because they speak the Language and practice the cultures of the Hausa people. These peoples are quick to tell those who care to listen that they aren't Hausas. However, the division is not a big deal in the North largely because the shared Islamic identity superceed ethnic identity as a password to entering different strata of their society. midnighter: |
Honestly, I don't understand Naija Youths anymore. They have taken begging online. Some funny guys now beg on Twitter, Facebook, Nairaland and Instagram asking celebrities (or anyone who cares to listen) to send money to them |
Thanks for your matured response. I am personally interested in the Ikwerre/Anioma matter because of my personal experience. Before entering the University, I used to assume that names and language clearly define one's ethnic group until I met some 'igbo' people with certain encounters. During my NYSC days in Yobe State, there was one Igbo lady in my flat called Oluchi who was very close and nice to me. I didn't return her gestures because she was too lousy for my liking. There were several other 'Igbo' corpers in that corpers' lodge. One day, one of the other Igbo corpers called Mercy came to our flat , requesting for a little favour from me which needed the cooperation of Oluchi. This Oluchi embarrassed and disgraced Mercy publicly which I didn't like. I later went to Oluchi, asking her why she publicly disgraced Mercy, after all they are both Igbos and are supposed to be sisters. She immediately protested, Mercy is NOT Igbo! I said but she bears Igbo surname and speak Igbo. To my greatest surprise, Oluchi said 'the fact that she speaks Igbo doesn't make her Igbo, she also speak Yoruba fluently, does that mean she is Yoruba? Oluchi went further to tell me that only she and two other people are Igbos and that the rest that we assume are Igbos are only igbos in names but not truly Igbos! midnighter: |
The same way many Igbo term Burutai, Abacha, IBB and others fulani men when they are not. immhotep: |
Enu (Yoruba)= Onu (Igbo) Igiripa(Yoruba)= Dimkpa( Igbo) Okunrin(Yoruba)= Okoro(Igbo) Asee(Yoruba)= Isee (Bini)= Isee(Igbo) Oba(Bini)= Oba(Yoruba) Bazuaye(Bini)= Bajulaye (Yoruba) Iye(Bini)= Iya/Iye (Yoruba) Omo(Bini)= Omo (Yoruba)= Umu(Igbo) Oliseh (Ika)= Oritse (Itshekiri)= Orisha (Yoruba)= Olisa (Igbo) Okuta (Yoruba)= Okute( Ika)= Okwute(Igbo). # My question: which of these language bastardized the other(s)? Which of them is the original and which one copied from the others? midnighter: |
This matter is NOT peculiar to the Igbos, it happens all over Nigeria. Many Danladi Ayuba, Ibrahim Umar, Abu Hashidu or Tanko Doma that you call Hausas are not Hausa. There are many people from Ogori-Mangogo LGA in Kogi State who claim their aren't Yorubas but bear Ademola, Adeleke or Ogundele as surnames. BULLIONVAN4: |
What makes a word Igbo? If Igbo speak their language, it's Igbo and if Ikwerres speak their language, it's Ikwerre language. Both Bini and Yoruba languages share some words e.g Iye, Oba, Omo, Ogedengbe (Ogedegbe) etc but you will never see either Bini or Yoruba people claiming exclusive right over these words. If an Edo man is bearing Akerele ,Taiwo, Ogun, Tayo,Omonoba, or A(k)pata , these names will be Edo names but if Yorubas bear the same names, they are Yoruba names. obiekunie2: |
Long time bros. We have missed your matured contributions on Nairaland since Okorocha's issue. On the Ikwerres matter, do you honestly think the people don't know their history? From my little research on the topic, the Ikwerres' desired to be seen as a separate ethnic group even before Independence in 1960 and not after the civil war as many Igbos on Nairaland like to paint it. They submitted memoranda to the Willinks Commission on the fears to the minorities and were part of the Calabar-Ogoja-Rivers (COR) movement in the old Eastern Region agitating for a separate region for the Non-Igbo people of the Eastern Region. Abagworo: |
This is an intellectual forum sir and not a tribal/clannish blogsite. People from all over Nigeria and indeed all over the world come to this forum. We have passed that your level of reasoning sir. Osagyefo98: |
This is a publication by Simeon Nwakaudu, the Special Assistant to the Governor of Rivers State. There's nothing concerning Afonja in this matter. Success1020: |
I know Igbos will bring this issue. 1) No ethnic group have a copyright over ANY Language. 2) All over the world, there are examples of different languages that share striking similarities to the extent that they may become partially mutually intelligible e.g Portuguese and Spanish, Yoruba and Itshekiri. 3) No language is inferior to another. Similarities doesn't mean that the languages are bastardized forms of another. 4) Languages evolve over time. E.g Afrikaneer in South Africa evolved from Dutch, English, Zulu and traces of Xhosa. French evolved from mixture (creole) of Latin and ancient languages of Gaul. Before 1700s, French used to be a pidgin of Latin Osagyefo98: |

RTSC good morning sir. RTSC: |
This post is borne out of a complex and dangerous mix of ignorance with Tribalism. 1) Lagos wasn't created by the FG as a commercial capital. Lagos EMERGED over time as the commercial capital due to it's Geographical location, History and Leadership. 2) Lagos has been an important Maritime city for at least 400 years, long before the creation of Nigeria 3) Kettykin probably doesn't know that the FG has moved it's Secretariat and the HQs of nearly all it's agencies to Abuja since 1991. 4) The FG offices in Lagos State are actually branch Offices or at best Zonal Headquarters. These kinds of offices are also in all the 36 States capitals/Zonal Headquarters. E.g every State have CBN and Federal Secretariat branch Offices. Some FG parastatals also have Headquarters in other States. E.g the Apex Military Institution and industry in Nigieria (NDA and DICON) are in Kaduna State. NPA is in Lagos because of it's Maritime status. 5) Most of the Embassies of Foreign Nations are in Abuja. They are however at liberty to set up consular offices anywhere they prefer in Nigeria. It's not the business of Nigerian FG to decree where they should set up their consular offices. 6) Most of the FG Landed properties have been privatized or slated for privatization. 7) Conscious and deliberate efforts by the FG and concerned States' Governments are needed to decongestant Lagos through PPP intiatives. New Seaports should be built along the Coastal States. Super Highways to and from these Seaports should be constructed. 9) Heavy duty industries should be set up in all the 6 Geopolitical zones, utilizing the readily available resources in these regions accompanied by grade-A road networks, standard Housing facilities, sophisticated Healthcare facilities with efficient Transport system, reliable portable water supply, regular electricity supply and stainable waste disposal mechanism. These will stimulate the economic growth of these zones and discourage unhealthy rural-urban migration to Lagos. |
And why not? I thought you people are sponsoring Atiku orTambuwal in 2023? Leave the Yorubas to pursue their political ambition. kikake: |
The attempts by Igbo people like you especially in Lagos to turn Tinubu to a hate figure create a seige scenerio in the minds of many Yorubas. It will only make more Yorubas to close ranks and rally round behind Tinubu. nku5: |
You don't get it. The parties will not gamble with a candidate that will guarantee their losses. joshuanwankwo: |
The PDP hierrachy are not fools. They know that if they give their presidential ticket to the SE in 2023, they have already lost before the election start. No party want to lose so easily and willingly. omenka: |

? Even if the south has always been politically diverse, the rabid anti-igbo drive that Tinubu has nurtured in yorubaland to stay relevant since 1999 is despicable. It's one thing to be diverse but it's another thing to sow hate and division in the name of politics.
Tribal politics has NEVER favoured Yorubas and it never will...
New Seaports should be built along the Coastal States. Super Highways to and from these Seaports should be constructed.
